Passage 1
श्रीजानक्युवाच— कीदृशं तत्परं कान्त रूपमत्यद्भुतं हरेः। मोहिता येन दैतेया दानवाश्चामृतं जहुः॥१॥
Śrī Jānakī said: Beloved, what was that supremely wondrous form of Hari that bewildered the Daityas and Dānavas and made them lose the nectar?
Passage 2
लक्ष्मीरपि प्रादुरभूदम्बुधेर्लोकमञ्जुला। तयाप्यनाक्षिप्तचित्ता मोहिन्या मुमुहुस्तराम्॥२॥
Even world-enchanting Lakṣmī arose from the ocean, yet those whose minds she did not seize were utterly deluded by Mohinī.
Passage 3
एतदत्यद्भुतं भाति ननु ये प्राणवल्लभ। लक्ष्म्या अप्यधिकं मन्ये रूपं भगवतो हरेः॥३॥
This appears astonishing, beloved of my life; I consider that form of Lord Hari even more beautiful than Lakṣmī.
Passage 4
इदं खलु ममाचक्ष्व सौन्दर्यं तन्मधुद्विषः। यदालोकनमात्रेण दैतेया वश्यवृत्तयः॥४॥
Tell me of Madhusūdana's beauty by the mere sight of which the Daityas became submissive.
Passage 5
श्रीराम उवाच— नूनं भगवतो रूपं रमाकान्तस्य तत्प्रिये। लक्ष्मीरूपात्समधिकं भवत्या सम्यगामतम्॥५॥
Śrī Rāma said: Dear one, you have rightly judged that form of Lakṣmī's Lord to surpass Lakṣmī's own beauty.
Passage 6
सैवाप्यंशकला रूपा यस्य देवस्य सुन्दरि। कोऽन्यस्तस्य तुलां धर्तुं क्षमते भुवनत्रये॥६॥
Beautiful one, Lakṣmī herself is only a partial manifestation of that Lord; who in the three worlds could equal him?
Passage 7
लक्ष्म्या अपि परं रूपं विष्णोरेवांशसम्भवम्। अतस्तत्तुलना नैव दृश्यते श्रूयतेऽपि च॥७॥
Even Lakṣmī's supreme form arises from a portion of Viṣṇu, so no equal to his form is seen or heard of.
Passage 8
यस्य रूपं समालोक्य मुमोह भगवान् भवः। किं वाच्यं तस्य सौन्दर्यं स्वयं भगवतो हरेः॥८॥
Lord Śiva himself was deluded on seeing that form; what more can be said of Lord Hari's beauty?
Passage 9
मोहिन्याद्याखिलमहाशक्तिसंघमहेक्षितुः। अलौकिकं चाद्भुतं च सर्वमेव हरेः प्रिये॥९॥
Dear one, everything about Hari, sovereign over Mohinī and the assembly of all great powers, is transcendent and wondrous.
Passage 10
रूपातिशयमेतस्य साक्षाद्भगवतो हरेः। अहं तवाभिधास्यामि शृणुष्वैकमनाः प्रिये॥१०॥
I shall tell you of Lord Hari's extraordinary beauty; listen with undivided attention. Śiva Visits Viṣṇu
Passage 11
श्रुत्वा भगवतो रूपं दैत्यदानवमोहनम्। श्रियोऽप्यधिकमाकर्ण्य शिवो द्रष्टुमना अभूत्॥११॥
Hearing that the Lord's form bewildered the Daityas and Dānavas and surpassed Lakṣmī, Śiva desired to see it.
Passage 12
ततो वृषभमारुह्य धर्मरूपं सनातनम्। पार्वतीसहितो रुद्रो विष्णोर्धामान्वपद्यत॥१२॥
Mounting his eternal bull, embodiment of dharma, Rudra went with Pārvatī to Viṣṇu's abode.
Passage 13
सभाजितः स हरिणा स्वागताद्यैरुमापतिः। स्वासनस्थ उवाचेदं स्मयन् मधुरया गिरा॥१३॥
Welcomed and honored by Hari, Umā's husband sat upon his seat and spoke smilingly in a sweet voice.
Passage 14
देवस्त्वमसि देवानां वेवेष्टि निखिलं भवान्। यदुद्देश्यजातं भगवंस्तन्मध्ये त्वं प्रतिष्ठितः॥१४॥
“You are the God of gods and pervade everything; whatever exists as an object, Lord, you abide at its heart.
Passage 15
सर्वेश्वरस्त्वं भगवन् सर्वस्यात्माधिदैविकः। सर्वहेतुः सर्वसाक्षी त्वमेवैकः प्रगीयसे॥१५॥
“You are Lord of all, the divine Self of everything, the cause and witness of all; you alone are proclaimed supreme.
Passage 16
आदिरन्तश्च मध्यं च त्वमेव जगतो हरे। त्वमन्तरं बहिश्चासि त्वमिदं त्वमहं प्रभो॥१६॥
“Hari, you are the world's beginning, middle, and end; you are within and without, this universe and this self.
Passage 17
यत्सत्यं परमानन्दं चिन्मात्रमद्वितीयकम्। तद्ब्रह्म परमं साक्षात्त्वमेवासि रमापते॥१७॥
“Lord of Ramā, you are directly that supreme Brahman—truth, highest bliss, pure consciousness, and nondual.
Passage 18
ये नित्यं श्रेय इच्छन्ति मुनयः शुद्धबुद्धयः। इहामुत्र सृतीस्त्यक्त्वा त्वदङ्घ्रिं त उपासते॥१८॥
“Pure-minded sages who desire eternal good abandon worldly courses here and hereafter and worship your feet.
Passage 19
विश्वसर्गादिहेतुस्त्वं जीवैस्तत्तत्फलेच्छया। आराध्यसे प्रभो नित्यं तत्तद्रूपो व्यवस्थितः॥१९॥
“As cause of creation and the rest, you assume corresponding forms and are worshiped by beings seeking their varied fruits.
Passage 20
त्वमुदासीन एवासि निरपेक्षतया प्रभो। तथापि ते लोकवत्तु लीला कैवल्यमीरितम्॥२०॥
“Yet you remain detached and independent; your activity, like worldly play, is declared wholly free.
Passage 21
त्वमस्य कारणं विष्णो कार्यं च त्वं रमापते। द्वैताद्वैतस्वरूपेण त्वमेवैकः प्रतिष्ठितः॥२१॥
“Viṣṇu, you are both cause and effect, established as the one reality appearing as duality and nonduality.
Passage 22
कुण्डलाद्यात्मना यद्वत्सुवर्णं सम्प्रतीयते। स्थानं सर्वविकल्पानां तथा त्वमखिलात्मना॥२२॥
“As gold is perceived in earrings and other forms, you as the universal Self are the basis of every distinction.
Passage 23
प्रधानपुरुषावन्ये तयोरपि परं परे॥२३॥
“Some call you primordial matter and the conscious person; others say you are the supreme beyond both.
Passage 24
विमलोत्कर्षिणी ज्ञानक्रियायोगा च प्रह्विका। सत्येशानानुग्रहा च यदेता नव शक्तयः॥२४॥
“Vimalā, Utkarṣiṇī, Jñāna, Kriyā, Yoga, Prahvī, Satya, Īśānā, and Anugrahā are your nine powers.
Passage 25
ताभिर्युक्तं परं केचित्त्वां बुधाः सम्प्रचक्षते। वदन्ति केचित्त्वां स्वतन्त्रं महापुरुषमव्ययम्॥२५॥
“Some wise ones describe you as the supreme Lord joined with these powers; others as the independent, imperishable Great Person.
Passage 26
अहं ब्रह्मा मरीच्याद्या ऋषयश्च महाधियः। न ते लीलामपि ज्ञातुमीशते त्वां पुनः कुतः॥२६॥
“Neither I, nor Brahmā, nor the great sages beginning with Marīci can comprehend even your play—much less you yourself.
Passage 27
भगवन् किं पुनर्वाच्यं राजसैस्तामसैश्च यत्। भवानगम्यरूपोऽसि ये न सत्यं प्रकाशयेत्॥२७॥
“What then of those governed by passion and darkness, which do not reveal truth? Your nature is inaccessible to them.
Passage 28
त्वं जन्मस्थितिनाशमस्य जगतो जानासि नानासृती भूतानां च समीहितं कलयसे बन्धं च मोक्षं तथा। त्वं व्याप्नोषि समस्तमेतदखिलं ज्ञानात्मकः श्रीपते बाह्याकाशवदन्तरा बहिरपि त्वं सम्प्रविष्टोऽखिलम्॥२८॥
“You know the world's creation, continuance, and destruction; you govern beings' varied paths, aims, bondage, and release. As consciousness you pervade everything, within and without like boundless space.
Passage 29
न त्वय्यघटितं किञ्चित्सर्वमायानियन्तरि। तथापि कौतुकेनेश द्रष्टुं त्वां वयमागताः॥२९॥
“Nothing is impossible for you, ruler of every māyā; nevertheless, moved by wonder, we have come to see you.
Passage 30
दृष्टानि तव रूपाणि क्रीडमानस्य स्वे गुणैः। भवार्यमतरिभ्राज्यानि लोकानां त्रिजगत्पते॥३०॥
“Lord of the three worlds, we have seen your forms as you play through your powers—forms worthy of being contemplated by the worlds.
Passage 31
तव या मोहिनी शक्तिः साक्षान्मूर्तिमती श्रुता। तामहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि दैत्यदानवमोहिनीम्॥३१॥
“I wish to see your power Mohinī embodied—the one said to bewilder the Daityas and Dānavas.
Passage 32
यद्रूपं प्रकटीकृत्य दानवांस्त्वममोहयः। अपाययश्च पीयूषं सुराणां सत्त्ववर्तिनाम्॥३२॥
“Manifesting that form, you deluded the Dānavas and gave nectar to the virtuous gods.
Passage 33
तद्रूपमहिमिच्छामि द्रष्टुं त्रिभुवनेश्वर। श्रियोऽपि सौन्दर्यमदं हर्तुं यच्छक्नुते विभो॥३३॥
“Lord of the three worlds, I wish to see that form which can humble even Lakṣmī's pride in beauty.”
Passage 34
इति विज्ञापितो देवः स्वयं स भगवान् हरिः। रुद्रेण पार्वतीशेन प्रहस्य तमुवाच ह॥३४॥
Thus petitioned by Rudra, Pārvatī's Lord, Hari laughed and addressed him.
Passage 35
दैत्यदानवयूथानां मोहनाय महेश्वर। मया प्रकटितं रूपं हिताय च सुपर्वणाम्॥३५॥
“Maheśvara, I manifested that form to delude the Daitya and Dānava hosts and benefit the gods.
Passage 36
तद्दिदृक्षसि चेच्छम्भो दर्शयिष्यामि तत्तव। कामिनः सुन्दरीः श्रेष्ठा यदुपासनयाऽऽप्नुयुः॥३६॥
“If you wish to see it, Śambhu, I shall show you the form by worshiping which lovers attain the finest beauties.” Mohinī Appears in the Garden
Passage 37
इत्थं वदन्नेव तदा भगवान् कञ्जलोचनः। पश्यतः पार्वतीशस्य तत्क्षणेऽन्तरधीयत॥३७॥
While speaking, the lotus-eyed Lord vanished before Pārvatī's husband.
Passage 38
भवो दश दिशः पश्यन्नास्ते गिरिजया सह। दिदृक्षुस्तस्य वैचित्र्यं सर्वतो विकिरन् दृशम्॥३८॥
Śiva remained with Girijā, looking through all ten directions, eager to behold the wonder.
Passage 39
अथ स्वधामोपवने रमापतिर्दिव्याङ्गनावेषधरो विमोहनः। आविर्बभूवाप्रतिमे समुल्लसद्वसन्तलक्ष्मीसुविचित्रितद्रुमे॥३९॥
Then in his garden abode, amid incomparable trees adorned by spring's splendor, Lakṣmī's Lord appeared as an enchanting divine woman.
Passage 40
तां सुन्दरीकोटिशिरःशिखामणिं स्वपाणिना मञ्जुलकेलिकन्दुकम्। उच्छालयन्तीमधऊर्ध्वकं शनैः समीरलोलाञ्चललक्षितस्तनीम्॥४०॥
She was the crown jewel of millions of beauties, gently tossing a play ball up and down while the breeze moved her garment and revealed her breasts.
Passage 41
केलिश्लथच्छोणदुकूलमध्यतः सलीलमीषत्परिवृत्तमेखलाम्। पुनोत्पतत्कन्दुककर्मसंचलद्वेणीनितम्बस्तनहारभारतः॥४१॥
Her red silk loosened in play and her girdle turned slightly; as she chased the rising ball, braid, hips, breasts, and necklace moved heavily.
Passage 42
अभीक्ष्णभज्यत्सुकृशोदरीं मिथः क्रीडाचलच्चारुपदाम्बुजद्वयाम्। सौरभ्यसम्भारपतन्मधुव्रतैः सत्राससोद्वेगविलोललोचनाम्॥४२॥
Her slender waist bent repeatedly and her lotus feet moved in play; startled by bees descending upon her fragrance, her eyes darted anxiously.
Passage 43
कर्णस्थताटङ्कमणिच्छविच्छटामिलत्कपोलस्थलमञ्जुलालकाम्। कुचाञ्चलं केलिकलापरिश्लथं संवृण्वतीमक्षुपरेण पाणिना॥४३॥
The jewel-light of her earrings met lovely locks upon her cheeks; with one hand she covered the garment loosened from her breast by play.
Passage 44
मुहुस्तदन्येन च कन्दुकं क्षितौ प्रकीडयन्तीं भुवनैकमोहिनीम्। उच्चैस्तरामङ्गविकृष्टितः स्फुटं विभक्तचारुत्रिवलीतरङ्गिणीम्॥४४॥
With the other hand she repeatedly bounced the ball, enchantress of the world; as her body stretched upward, the lovely waves of three folds at her waist appeared distinctly.
Passage 45
सभावसंलद्भगभीरविस्फुरन्नाभीह्रदां प्रस्फुटरोमराजिकाम्। तां सत्रपस्मितविसृष्टकटाक्षबाणसद्यःप्रमृष्टहृदयां बहुहावभावाम्॥४५॥
Her deep navel-lake and fine line of hair shone with expressive beauty; her bashful smile and sidelong arrow-glances instantly swept away the heart, and she displayed countless gestures.
Passage 46
देवो निरीक्ष्य गिरिशो भृशविह्वलाङ्गः स्वात्मानमेव गिरिजामपि विस्मृतोऽभूत्। विक्रीडन्त्या भूरिभावाञ्चितायास्तस्या हस्तात्कन्दुकोऽगाद्विदूरे॥४६॥
Seeing her, Lord Śiva became utterly overwhelmed and forgot both himself and Girijā; as the expressive woman played, the ball flew far from her hand.
Passage 47
आधावन्त्यास्तमतूत्तालपादं स्रस्तकाञ्चीश्लथमासोत्तरीयम्। अथो सभावं गिरिशस्य पश्यतस्तदुत्तरीयं मृदुकुञ्जमारुतः॥४७॥
She ran after it with high steps, girdle slipping and upper garment loosened; while Śiva watched, the gentle bower breeze caught that garment.
Passage 48
जहार संलक्ष्यसुपीवरस्तनी विवस्त्रदेहा बहुसंचुकोच सा। तां तप्तचामीकरचारुविग्रहां विवस्त्रसंलक्ष्यतमस्तनोदरीम्॥४८॥
The breeze carried it off, revealing her full breasts; left unclothed, she shrank in embarrassment, her beautiful body glowing like molten gold.
Passage 49
दृष्ट्वा गिरीशश्चकमेतमां हृदा सभावमायोजितलोललोचनः। विस्पष्टमङ्गं तडिदुज्ज्वलप्रभं निगूहयन्तीं लतिकान्तरेषु सा॥४९॥
Seeing her clearly revealed lightning-bright body as she hid among vines, Śiva desired her intensely, his restless eyes filled with passion.
Passage 50
रराज राजीववनातिसौरभा मधुव्रतौघाव्रियमाणविग्रहा। विमोहितात्मा मदनस्य मार्गणैः सतत्कटाक्षापहताकुलान्तरः॥५०॥
More fragrant than a lotus grove and surrounded by swarms of bees, she shone; Śiva, struck by Kāma's arrows and her glances, became inwardly bewildered.
Passage 51
निगूढदेहां लतिकासु वीक्ष्य तां रहः समालिङ्गितुमन्वगाद्भवः। निकुञ्जवातस्खलदुत्तरीयका सा रुद्रमायान्तमवेक्ष्य सत्रपा॥५१॥
Seeing her hidden among vines, Śiva followed to embrace her in secret; her garment slipping in the bower breeze, she bashfully saw Rudra approach.
Passage 52
निलीयमाना विटपेषु भूरुहां स्मितानना न स्थिरतां दधौ क्वचित्। हरः प्रमुष्टाखिलविह्वलेन्द्रियः प्रसह्य तामेत्य वधूशिरोमणिम्॥५२॥
Smiling, she hid among the trees and stayed nowhere; Śiva, all his senses stolen and agitated, forcibly reached the crown jewel of women.
Passage 53
जवेन वेणीं परिगृह्य पाणिना स्मरेण मत्तः परिषस्वजे तमाम्। भृशं परिष्वक्ततनुः शिवेन सा सभावमावर्तितचारुविग्रहा॥५३॥
Maddened by desire, he swiftly seized her braid and embraced her tightly; held by Śiva, she artfully twisted her beautiful body.
Passage 54
निरीक्षमाणा त्रपया दिशो दश प्रकीर्णकेशी रुरुचे तडिद्यथा। सा मोचयित्वास्य भुजद्वयान्तराद्वपुः समालिङ्गनगाढमर्दनात्॥५४॥
Looking bashfully in every direction, hair disheveled, she flashed like lightning, then freed her body from his two arms and crushing embrace.
Passage 55
सशङ्कचित्तेव नितान्तमद्रवच्छितम्बभारोद्वहनश्रमालसा। तां धावमानां श्लथकेशबन्धनस्खलत्सुमन्दारसुमीघवर्षिणीम्॥५५॥
As if frightened, she fled, languid beneath the weight of her hips; her loosened hair binding scattered a dense shower of heavenly blossoms.
Passage 56
तनुत्विषा रोचितसर्वकाननां शिवोऽन्वधावत् स्मरबाणवेपितः। प्रवृष्टधम्मिल्लसमुत्कराञ्चितां जवेन तस्याः पदवीमनुद्रुतः॥५६॥
Illuminating the forest with bodily radiance and shedding flowers from her hair, she ran while Śiva, shaken by Kāma's arrows, pursued her path.
Passage 57
भवो भवानीमपि पार्श्ववर्तिनीं न जज्ञिवान् ह्रीपरिलोपचञ्चलः। तडित्प्रभां तामनुधावतो जवात् हरस्य चस्कन्द बलेन वीर्यकम्। प्रक्षुब्धचित्तस्य करेणुदर्शनाद्यथा करीन्द्रस्य मदाविलस्य तत्॥५७॥
Deprived of modesty, Śiva did not recognize even Bhavānī beside him; pursuing the lightning-bright woman, his seed fell forcefully, as rut flows from an elephant agitated by seeing a cow elephant.
Passage 58
अमोघरेतसस्तस्य यत्र यत्र पपात तत्। रेतो दृशादिगुद्भासि कान्तिमत्ता प्रविस्फुरत्॥५८॥
Wherever the unfailing seed fell, it flashed with brilliance and illuminated the quarters.
Passage 59
तत्र तत्राभवंस्तानि क्षेत्राणि धरणीतले। हेमपारदपूर्णानि श्रीकराणि नृणां भवे॥५९॥
At those places on earth arose auspicious fields filled with gold and mercury, sources of prosperity for people.
Passage 60
सरांसि सरितः शैलान् वनान्युपवनानि च। खेटकाः खर्वटा वाप्यो मुनीनामाश्रमाणि च॥६०॥
Lakes, rivers, mountains, forests, gardens, villages, market towns, wells, and sages' hermitages were affected.
Passage 61
पूर्णानि रुद्रवीर्येण हेम्ना वै पारदेन च। निकाममरुचन् दीप्त्या दीप्तानि परया श्रिया॥६१॥
Filled through Rudra's potency with gold and mercury, they gleamed abundantly with supreme splendor. Śiva Recognizes Viṣṇu's Māyā
Passage 62
स्रस्ते चावितथे वीर्ये गिरीशः प्रत्यपद्यत। आत्मानं भगवन्मायाविप्रनष्टधियं तदा॥६२॥
When his unfailing seed had fallen, Śiva recovered awareness of himself and realized that the Lord's māyā had carried away his judgment.
Passage 63
न्यवर्तताथो शिव आत्ममोहात्सद्यः परिप्राप्तधृतिस्मृतिज्ञः। विज्ञाय मायां परमस्य विष्णोर्मेने न तच्चित्रमगाधबोधः॥६३॥
Śiva withdrew from self-delusion, immediately regaining steadiness, memory, and knowledge; understanding supreme Viṣṇu's māyā, the deeply wise Lord found it unsurprising.
Passage 64
ततः स्वस्थतमं शान्तमात्मप्रकृतिमागतम्। त्यक्तस्मररयं शम्भुं समुपेत्याब्रवीद्धरिः॥६४॥
Hari approached Śambhu, now peaceful, restored to his nature, and free of passion's agitation, and spoke.
Passage 65
योषिद्रूपं मया शम्भो स्वमायाज्ञापनाय ते। प्रकटीकृतमुन्मुग्धा यदालक्ष्य सुरासुराः॥६५॥
“Śambhu, I manifested this captivating female form to make my māyā known to you—the māyā that bewilders gods and Asuras.
Passage 66
पश्य मे पौरुषं रूपमिदानीमिदमद्भुतम्। शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मदिव्यायुधनिषेवितम्॥६६॥
“Now behold this wondrous masculine form of mine, attended by the conch, discus, mace, lotus, and divine weapons.
Passage 67
वनमालालसद्वक्षःस्फुरच्छ्रीवत्सकौस्तुभम्। इदं मे परमं रूपं ध्येयं योगीन्द्रसत्तमैः॥६७॥
“Its chest shines with the forest garland, Śrīvatsa, and Kaustubha; this supreme form is to be meditated upon by the greatest yogis.
Passage 68
अनेनापि स्वरूपेण विकृतिं यान्ति योषितः। स्मरार्दिता मां सहसा सेवितुं सुसमुत्सुकाः॥६८॥
“Even before this form women are transformed, afflicted by desire and eager to serve me.
Passage 69
श्रियोऽपि मोहनं शम्भो रूपमेतन्मनोहरम्। यथेच्छं पश्य भगवन् स्वस्थचित्तोऽधुनासि यत्॥६९॥
“Śambhu, this enchanting form can bewilder even Śrī. Now that your mind is steady, behold it as you wish.
Passage 70
त्वदन्येन च मे माया न शक्या तर्तुमीश्वर। मदिच्छयैव देवेश मोहितोऽस्यद्य निश्चितम्॥७०॥
“No one but you can cross my māyā, Lord; today you were deluded only by my will.
Passage 71
भवादृशोऽपि योगीन्द्र यत्र मोहमुपागतः। तत्र कोऽन्यः समर्थः स्यादिति ज्ञापयितुं जनान्॥७१॥
“This occurred to show people: if even a master yogi like you is deluded, who else could withstand it?
Passage 72
एतन्मे चरितं शम्भो स्त्रीस्वरूपविभावनम्। मा तेऽस्तु विक्लवः शम्भो मा च व्रीडा महात्मनः॥७२॥
“Śambhu, this manifestation of a woman's form is my own play; do not be distressed or ashamed.
Passage 73
नूनं मे दुस्तरा माया तांस्तान् भावान् प्रकुर्वती। त्वामृते कस्तरेदेनां योगीन्द्रः स्वात्मनिष्ठितम्॥७३॥
“My māyā is certainly hard to cross and produces every state; apart from you, what self-established yogi could cross it?
Passage 74
एतां गुणमयीं शम्भो स्वात्मप्रकृतिमद्भुताम्। आश्रित्य वितनोम्यस्य सृष्टिस्थितिलयानहम्॥७४॥
“Taking support of this wondrous, guṇa-made power of my own nature, I unfold the universe's creation, preservation, and dissolution.”
Passage 75
एवं समाहितमतिर्भगवान् विष्णुनाभवः। भवानीसहितः स्वस्थः स्वालयं प्रत्यपद्यत॥७५॥
Thus reassured by Viṣṇu, Śiva returned peacefully with Bhavānī to his abode.
Passage 76
तत्र गत्वा रहः स्थित्वा तां देवीं शक्तिमात्मनः। उवाच विहसन् रुद्रो भवानीं प्रीतिसंयुतः॥७६॥
There in private, smiling affectionately, Rudra spoke to Bhavānī, his own divine power.
Passage 77
अपि त्वया गौरि विलोकिता हरेः परस्य मायाखिलभावभाविनी। यया विद्वानात्ममहित्वमज्ञवद्विमोहितोऽहं सकलामरर्षभः॥७७॥
“Gaurī, did you see supreme Hari's māyā that produces every state? Though wise and foremost of the gods, I forgot my greatness and was deluded like an ignorant man.
Passage 78
अहं विरिञ्चिर्मरुतामधीश्वरो मुनीश्वरा ये भृगुगौतमादयः। तेऽप्यस्य मायां परिणाहिनीं गुणैस्तरीतुमीशा न भवन्ति पार्वति॥७८॥
“Pārvatī, neither I, Brahmā, Indra, nor sages such as Bhṛgu and Gautama can cross his māyā, expansive through the guṇas.
Passage 79
सृष्टिस्थितिक्षयकरीं गुणसम्प्रवाहमुग्धाखिलत्रिभुवनां भवबन्धहेतुम्। आद्यां विचित्ररचनाश्रयदिव्यरूपां विष्णोः परस्य पुरुषस्य नतोऽस्मि मायाम्॥७९॥
“I bow to supreme Viṣṇu's primordial māyā, which creates, sustains, and destroys; enchants the three worlds through the guṇas; causes worldly bondage; and bears the divine form of manifold creation.
Passage 80
रहः स्थिता मां भवती कदाचित् कं ध्यायसीत्याप्तमना अपृच्छत्। स एष साक्षात्पुरुषः पुराणः स्वयं प्रपञ्चस्य निदानभूतः॥८०॥
“Once in private you trustingly asked whom I meditate upon. This is that ancient Person himself, the source of the cosmos.” Rāma Concludes the Ocean-Churning Account
Passage 81
श्रीराम उवाच— इति ते कथितं कान्ते समुद्रो मथितो यथा। स्वयं लक्ष्मीस्ततो जाता साक्षात्त्रिभुवनेश्वरी॥८१॥
Śrī Rāma said: Beloved, I have told you how the ocean was churned and Lakṣmī, sovereign of the three worlds, arose.
Passage 82
तत्साहं निःसृता एता भक्ता मे ब्रजगोपिकाः। यूथेश्वर्यश्च सकला ब्रजकेलिविनोदिकाः॥८२॥
From her and from me came these devoted Vraja gopīs, all leaders of groups who delight in Vraja's play.

विलासिन्यस्तडित्कान्त्या द्योतयन्त्यो ब्रजावनीम्। नित्यं रासविलासादिरसिका मम वल्लभाः॥८२॥
My beloved playful gopīs illuminate Vraja's earth like lightning and eternally relish rāsa and other divine sports. The edition repeats printed marker 82 for editorial passage 83.
Passage 84
कथिता चापि तेऽन्येषां रत्नानां सूतिरम्बुधेः। अमृतस्य तथोत्पत्तिः सुरेभ्यः पायितं यथा॥८४॥
I have also described the ocean's production of the other treasures, the nectar's appearance, and how it was given to the gods.
Passage 85
राहोर्ग्रहत्वसम्प्राप्तिनियमो वचसा हरेः। देवानां दानवानां च कलहश्च तवेरितः॥८५॥
I told you how Hari's word established Rāhu as a planet and of the conflict between gods and Dānavas.
Passage 86
विक्रमस्तत्र सुमहान् साक्षान्मम रघूपतेः। पक्षपातश्च देवानां जयदानं तथामुना॥८६॥
There the great prowess of myself, Lord of the Raghus, was directly displayed, along with favor toward the gods and the granting of victory.
Passage 87
यः कीर्तयेन्नित्यमिदं शृणोति स्मरत्यभीक्ष्णं रामस्य चरितं महोत्तमश्लोकनिधेः स जातु पराभवं क्वापि लभेत नैव॥८७॥
Whoever constantly recites, hears, and repeatedly remembers this deed of Rāma, treasury of the highest praise, will never suffer defeat anywhere.
