Passage 1
श्रीराम उवाच— ऊचुश्च ते तामनवद्यदेहां सुलक्षणां हृच्छयबाणतप्ताः। निरूपयन्तो निभृतं स्वरूपमाधुर्यसिन्धूत्थतरङ्गसिक्ताम्॥१॥
Śrī Rāma said: Scorched by the arrows of desire, they quietly contemplated that faultlessly formed and auspicious woman, who seemed bathed in waves rising from an ocean of beauty and sweetness, and addressed her.
Passage 2
अहो ते रूपमतुलमहो धाम मनोरमम्। अहो वयश्च ते नूत्नं न त्वं सृष्टिविधेरसि॥२॥
“Oh, your beauty is unequalled! Oh, your radiance enchants the mind! Oh, your youth is ever fresh! You cannot be a product of the ordinary act of creation.
Passage 3
अन्यदेवाङ्गलालित्यमन्यदेव च वर्तनम्। अन्यैव ते तनोश्छाया कर्तुं शक्यं न वेधसा॥३॥
“The grace of your limbs is of another order, as is your way of moving. The luster of your body is altogether other; Brahmā could not have made it.
Passage 4
इयमधरपुटी तवातिशोणा मधुरिमयूरपरम्पराप्रभूतिः। इह जगति सुधावधीन् पदार्थान् सपदि विजित्य विभाति वर्तमाना॥४॥
“Your exceedingly red pair of lips is the abundant source of successive floods of sweetness. It shines here after instantly conquering every substance in the world whose limit is nectar.
Passage 5
तनुरियमतुला तवातिधन्या वद सखि केन तुलां प्रयातु लोके। अपि खलु विजितानयैव विद्युत् चरति मनस्त्रपया वनेषु गूढा॥५॥
“Your incomparable body is supremely blessed. Tell us, lovely one—what in the world can equal it? Lightning itself, defeated by you, seems to wander hidden in the forests out of shame.
Passage 6
का त्वं कल्याणिनि बाले कुतो वा वरवर्णिनि। कस्यासि तन्वि कुलभूरपि किं कर्तुमिच्छसि॥६॥
“Who are you, auspicious maiden? Where have you come from, beautiful one? Of whose lineage are you, slender lady, and what do you wish to do?
Passage 7
अये कमलपत्राक्षि न त्वं स्पृष्टासि केनचित्। देवासुरमनुष्येन्द्रसिद्धगन्धर्वयोनिषु॥७॥
“Lotus-petal-eyed woman, no one among the gods, Asuras, human kings, Siddhas, or Gandharva races has ever touched you.
Passage 8
अपि केनेह हेमाङ्गि प्रेषितासि त्वमीदृशी। सुधामपि पराजेतुं प्रायः प्राप्ता स्वधामतः॥८॥
“Golden-limbed lady, has someone sent you here in this form? You seem to have come from your own realm to defeat even nectar.
Passage 9
अपीदृशीं ननु भवतीमलौकिकीं प्रपञ्चतामसुरवराधिनाकिनाम्। परां रतिः सुदति मनस्युदेति मां विलिल्यिरे सपदि न इन्द्रियाणि यत्॥९॥
“Surely, beautiful-toothed woman, when such an unworldly being as you appears before the foremost Asuras and gods, supreme delight rises within the mind; our senses all but dissolve at once.
Passage 10
नैतादृशी प्रीतिरभूत्कदाचित्स्वेन्द्रियाणां मनसस्तथा नः॥१०॥
“Never before have our minds and senses experienced delight like this.
Passage 11
यत्र यत्रारविन्दाक्षि प्रायस्त्वमनुयास्यसि। तत्र तत्रैव सानन्दं वर्षिष्यन्ति सुधाघनाः॥११॥
“Lotus-eyed woman, wherever you may go, clouds of nectar will surely rain down there in joy.
Passage 12
अपूर्वां सुषमामेतां पश्यन्तस्तव वप्मसु। अतीव कौतुकायन्तो वक्तुं नो पारयामहे॥१२॥
“Beholding this unprecedented loveliness in your body, we are so overwhelmed with wonder that we cannot speak adequately.
Passage 13
त्वं चेल्लब्धासि लावण्यमाधुर्यैकतरङ्गिणि। नीरसेन त्वदधरात् किं लब्धेनामृतेन नः॥१३॥
“O sole river of beauty and sweetness, if we have obtained you, what use have we for insipid nectar beside the nectar of your lips?
Passage 14
मङ्गलोऽसौ सुसम्पन्नः कालो मथनकर्मणि। यत्र त्वं मिलितास्यद्धा सुधातोऽपि गरीयसी॥१४॥
“The time spent in the labor of churning has indeed become completely auspicious, for through it we have met you, who are assuredly greater than the nectar. They Ask Her to Divide the Nectar
Passage 15
स्पर्धयत्वत्र मा दितिसुता इयं वोऽमृतभोजने। विभागदा विशेषेण संविधातुमुपस्थिता॥१५॥
“Sons of Diti, let there be no rivalry here over drinking the nectar. This woman has arrived to arrange matters by assigning the shares distinctly.
Passage 16
न्यस्यताममृतामत्रमस्याः पाणिसरोरुहे। पाययिष्यत्यसौ बाला यथेष्टं वो दितेः सुताः॥१६॥
“Place the vessel of nectar in her lotus hand. Sons of Diti, this maiden will give each of you drink as she sees fit.
Passage 17
क्रोधं द्रोहं च संघर्षं परस्परमुदस्य वै। इयमाश्रयणीया वो दग्धकन्दर्पजीवनी॥१७॥
“Cast aside anger, hostility, and mutual conflict. You should take refuge in her, for she can restore scorched Kandarpa to life.
Passage 18
अयि त्वं कोमलापाङ्गि पाशाविव भुजाविमौ। क्षेप्स्यसि कस्य कण्ठान्तर्वशीकरणयन्त्रवत्॥१८॥
“Tender-glancing woman, around whose neck will you cast these two arms, like nooses and instruments of subjugation?
Passage 19
अये मध्यस्थलमिदं केन ते पाणिनामितम्। त्रिवलीकेतवाल्लग्नं यदङ्गुलिचतुष्टयम्॥१९॥
“Who has measured this middle region of yours with a hand, leaving four fingers attached there beneath the banner of your three folds?
Passage 20
इति सा काश्यपैर्भूयः प्ररोचनवचोभरैः। आभाषिता जहासोच्चैर्मोहिनी मृगलोचना॥२०॥
Thus addressed repeatedly by the descendants of Kaśyapa with heaps of flattering words, the doe-eyed Mohinī laughed aloud. Mohinī Warns Them
Passage 21
अये धर्मभृतः पुत्राः कश्यपस्य प्रजापतेः। दितेः पतिव्रतायाश्च प्रभूता मां किमिच्छथ॥२१॥
“You are sons of the righteous Prajāpati Kaśyapa and have sprung from the faithful wife Diti. Why do you desire me?
Passage 22
अहं हि सर्वधर्मान्तकारिणी पांसुला परा। कुर्वन्ति मयि विश्वासं न कोऽपि खलु कोविदः॥२२॥
“I am utterly unchaste, a destroyer of every boundary of dharma. No wise person places trust in me.
Passage 23
विद्युत्प्रकाशं जलदस्य छायां यत्पुंश्चलीनां च सुखं प्रसङ्गात्। जातान्यपि त्रीणि भवे भवेयुरनित्यरूपाणि न विश्वसन्ति॥२३॥
“The flash of lightning, a cloud's shade, and pleasure gained through association with an unchaste woman—though all three may arise, the wise do not trust them, for their nature is impermanent.
Passage 24
किं च वो मत्प्रसङ्गेन सुखं स्यादस्थिरात्मनाम्। इति निश्चित्य विबुधा न विश्वसत मां क्वचित्॥२४॥
“And what happiness could unstable minds gain through association with me? Knowing this with certainty, wise ones, never place trust in me.” The Jar Is Placed in Her Hands
Passage 25
श्रीराम उवाच— हेलया लीलया चापि विभ्रमैः सम्भ्रमैरपि। विनिर्जितास्तया दैत्या दम्भवद्वञ्चनावृताः॥२५॥
Śrī Rāma said: Through her teasing, play, alluring gestures, and apparent confusion, she completely conquered the Daityas, who were covered by proud deceit.
Passage 26
उत्पन्नदृढविश्वासास्तस्यां ते दैत्यदानवाः। सम्मोहिता हृच्छयेनान्तर्ददह्यन्ते स्म भूरिशः॥२६॥
The Daityas and Dānavas developed firm trust in her. Bewildered by desire, they burned intensely within.
Passage 27
न्यधुश्च तस्याः करयोः सुधाघटं निवृत्तसंघर्षजवादवृत्तयः। भृशं समाश्वस्तहृदो मुदावृता मुहुः सभावं जहसुः स्मरोत्कटाः॥२७॥
Abandoning conflict and hasty argument, they placed the nectar jar in her hands. Thoroughly reassured and filled with joy, they laughed repeatedly with feeling, inflamed by desire.
Passage 28
ततो गृहीत्वा स्वयमेव तैः करे वितीर्णमुच्चैरमृतस्य भाजनम्। उवाच कल्याणतमोरुभाषिता प्रकाशयन्ती दशनत्विषा दिशः॥२८॥
She then personally accepted the vessel of nectar offered into her hand and spoke exceedingly auspicious words, illuminating the directions with the radiance of her teeth.
Passage 29
अङ्गीकुरुत हे प्राज्ञा यत्कृतं मे यदृच्छया। अपि सम्यगसम्यग्वा विभजिष्ये तदामृतम्॥२९॥
“Wise ones, agree to whatever I may do according to my inclination. Whether rightly or wrongly, I shall divide that nectar.”
Passage 30
लीलाविलासवत्यास्तत्तस्या व्याहृतमुत्तमम्। तथैवेत्यसुरश्रेष्ठा हृदि श्रद्दधिरेतमाम्॥३०॥
The foremost Asuras accepted in their hearts the excellent statement of that playful, charming woman, saying, “Let it be exactly so.” The Two Rows Are Prepared
Passage 31
हरिणेरिताः सकलशक्तिमता विबुधाः प्रथममुपोषितास्तदनुमज्जनशौचयुजः। सुविधिहुताग्नयो विहितगोद्विजदानवराः कृतपरमाशिषो विविधमन्त्रधरैर्मुनिभिः॥३१॥
Directed by all-powerful Hari, the gods first fasted and then bathed and purified themselves. They properly offered into the sacred fires, bestowed excellent gifts of cows upon brāhmaṇas, and received supreme blessings from sages versed in many mantras.
Passage 32
मुहुः स्वस्तिपुण्याहमावाच्य विप्रैर्यथाप्रीति वासांसि नव्याहतानि। परिधाय सोद्रेकमाभूषिताङ्गाः स्थिताः पूतपूर्वाग्रदर्भासनेषु॥३२॥
The brāhmaṇas repeatedly proclaimed blessings and an auspicious day. The gods put on fresh, unused garments as they pleased, adorned their bodies splendidly, and took their places upon purified seats of darbha grass pointing east.
Passage 33
सुखं प्राङ्मुखाः सूपविष्टास्तदानीं सुराश्चासुरा बद्धपङ्क्तिद्वयास्ते। भृशं धूपदीपस्रगामोदजुष्टां महारत्नशालामधिष्ठाय रेजुः॥३३॥
Then the gods and Asuras sat comfortably facing east in two ordered rows. Occupying the great jeweled hall, richly filled with incense, lamps, garlands, and fragrance, they shone resplendently.
