बृहस्पतिरुवाच— कच्चित्त्वमसुराचार्य भूतिभिः सुखमेधसे। यस्य शिष्या विजयिनो दैतेया दानवा अपि॥१॥
Bṛhaspati said: “I trust that you prosper happily in your powers, O teacher of the demons, whose disciples, the sons of Diti and Danu, are victorious.
Passage 2
भूर्भुवःस्वरिति ब्रह्मंस्त्रैलोक्यमसुरैर्जितम्। अहो अमीषामतुलं बलं वीर्यं च दुर्धरम्॥२॥
“Venerable one, the demons have conquered the three worlds—earth, the middle realm, and heaven. How incomparable is their strength, and how irresistible their valor!
Passage 3
यानि रत्नानि लोकेषु तेषां श्रीरसुरैः कृता। तव मन्त्रप्रभावेण ततोऽसि भगवान् स्वयम्॥३॥
“The demons have made the splendor of every jewel in the worlds their own through the power of your counsel. Therefore you are yourself a venerable lord.
Passage 4
अपि त्वेकं विजानीहि ज्ञात्वा चाप्यसुरान् वद। मथ्नन्ते यर्हि भगवन् कुर्युस्तर्ह्यजिता अमी॥४॥
“Yet learn this one thing and, having learned it, tell the demons as well. If churning is to be undertaken, venerable sir, let these unconquered ones do it.
Passage 5
सर्वेषां खलु रत्नानां स्थानमेकं महोदधिः। स च स्यान्मथितो भूयस्तदा लभ्यानि तान्यपि॥५॥
“The great ocean is the single abode of all jewels. If it were thoroughly churned, those treasures too could then be obtained.
Passage 6
ब्रूहि दैत्यगुरो दैत्यान् विशेषाद्बलशालिनः। मथ्नेयुरुदधिं यत्नाद् रत्नानां खलु लब्धये॥६॥
“Teacher of the Daityas, tell the demons—especially the strongest among them—to churn the ocean diligently in order to obtain its jewels.
Passage 7
देवैरपि च कार्यं स्यात् साहाय्यं स्वात्मशक्तितः। यद्यमीभिः प्रदेयोऽंश एवं जाते शुभं महत्॥७॥
“The gods too should lend the aid of their own strength, provided that a share is given by them. Such an arrangement would produce a great benefit.
Passage 8
देवाश्चैवासुराः सर्वे मथ्नन्तु पयसां निधिम्। तत उत्पाद्य रत्नानि विभक्तव्यानि सर्वशः॥८॥
“Let all the gods and demons churn the ocean. The treasures brought forth from it should then be divided in every respect.
Passage 9
संहत्य भवद्विहितं भवेत्कार्यं फलोन्मुखम्। असंहत्य विनाशाय संघातो हि महद्बलम्॥९॥
“United, the task arranged by you will advance toward its fruit; without such unity it will end in ruin, for combination is a mighty strength.
Passage 10
न धर्माय न भोगाय सिन्धो रत्नानि भूरिशः। विनियोज्यानि तान्येभिर्देवैरैक्यं विधाय हि॥१०॥
“The ocean's abundant jewels are now serving neither dharma nor enjoyment. After establishing unity with these gods, they should be put to use.” Śukra Presents the Plan to the Demons
Passage 11
मन्दरो मन्थदण्डोऽस्तु नेत्रं वासुकिर्नागराट्। उभयोर्भागयोः सन्तु मथितारः सुरासुराः॥११॥
“Let Mandara be the churning staff and Vāsuki, king of serpents, the rope. Let the gods and demons be the churners on the two sides.”
Passage 12
इत्युक्त उशना तेन सर्वानामन्त्र्य सोऽसुरान्। मन्त्रं तं कथयामास यदाह दिविषद्गुरुः॥१२॥
Thus addressed by him, Uśanas summoned all the demons and related the counsel that the gods' teacher had given.
Passage 13
शृण्वन्तु मामकाः सर्वे यूयं हि बलवत्तराः। रत्नानामाकरं वित्त समुद्रं पयसां निधिम्॥१३॥
“All my followers, listen! You are exceedingly strong. Know the ocean, the reservoir of waters, to be the mine of jewels.
Passage 14
कियती श्रीस्तु भुवने श्रीमन्तः स्युर्ययासुराः। अतो मन्थत पाथोधिं महत्याः श्रिय आप्तये॥१४॥
“How immense is the worldly prosperity through which you could become wealthy, O demons! Therefore churn the ocean to obtain immense prosperity.
Passage 15
किं तु नैकाकिना साध्यं महत्कार्यमिदं खलु। अतः संहत्य त्रिदशैर्मन्थनं कुरुतोदधेः॥१५॥
“But this great task cannot be accomplished by one party alone. Therefore, join with the gods and churn the ocean.
Passage 16
रत्नानामाकरो ह्येष दिव्यानां श्रिय एव च। ततो भवन्तः श्रीमन्तो भविष्यन्ति सुखाय मे॥१६॥
“It is indeed the mine of celestial jewels and prosperity. Through it you will become splendid, to my delight.
Passage 17
अमृतोत्पत्तये देवाः सन्धिं यास्यन्ति दानवाः। सिद्धे कार्ये विभक्तव्यं यथोचितमरिन्दमाः॥१७॥
“Dānavas, the gods will enter an alliance to produce nectar. When the task has been completed, what arises must be divided appropriately, subduers of foes.
Passage 18
उपानयत शैलेन्द्रं मन्दरं दृढविग्रहम्। सुवर्णमयमुत्तुङ्गं द्राघीयांसं सुरैः सह॥१८॥
“Together with the gods, bring the mountain king Mandara, robust in form, golden, lofty, and exceedingly extensive.
Passage 19
उपामन्त्रयत प्राज्ञा नागराजं च वासुकिम्। भागं दत्त्वामृतं तस्मै धत्त मन्थगुणं गिरौ॥१९॥
“Wise ones, invite the serpent king Vāsuki. Promise him a share of the nectar and place the churning rope upon the mountain.” The Demons Agree
Passage 20
श्रुत्वा शुक्रोदितं वाक्यमेतद्वैरोचनिप्रमुखा दैत्यवर्याः। सद्रत्नानां लब्धये जातकामाः सिन्धून्माथं रोचयामासुरन्तः॥२०॥
Hearing these words spoken by Śukra, the foremost Daityas led by Bali, son of Virocana, became eager to obtain the excellent jewels and inwardly approved the churning of the ocean. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे दक्षिणखण्डे सिन्धुप्रमथने द्वयशीतितमोऽध्यायः ॥ ८२ ॥ Thus ends Chapter 82, “The Churning of the Ocean,” in the Dakṣiṇa-khaṇḍa of the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa, in the dialogue between Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa.
