Passage 1
श्रीभगवानुवाच— ज्ञाता वोऽसुरवर्गेभ्यः सम्भूतोच्चैरियं रुजा। तत्प्रतीकारमधुना कर्तुमस्मि समुद्यतः॥१॥
The Blessed Lord said: I know this severe affliction that has arisen for you from the hosts of demons. I have now set myself to remedy it.
Passage 2
लोकेऽहं सर्वजीवेषु वृत्तिं साधारणीं श्रितः। तथापि मम भक्तेषु करुणाभ्यधिकामराः॥२॥
In this world I maintain an impartial disposition toward all living beings; even so, O immortals, my compassion is greater toward my devotees.
Passage 3
समत्वं वापि वैषम्यमुदाहरतु मे जनः। तथापि मम युष्मासु पक्षपातो विशेषतः॥३॥
People may describe me as equal or even as partial; nevertheless, I have a special partiality toward you.
Passage 4
युद्धे प्रसक्तेऽसुरपुङ्गवैर्वः पराजयो जायत एव देवाः। तन्मूलमेकं मृतसंजीविनी सा विद्या कवेरसुराचार्यकस्य॥४॥
Gods, whenever battle is joined with the foremost demons, your defeat inevitably follows. Its single root is the knowledge that restores the dead, possessed by Kavi Śukra, the demons' teacher.
Passage 5
भवन्तोऽपि सुधापानादमरत्वं यदा सुराः। गच्छेयुस्तर्हि गच्छेयुररयो वः पराभवम्॥५॥
Gods, when you too attain immortality by drinking nectar, your enemies will then meet defeat.
Passage 6
मायाविनः पापवृत्ता असुराः कूटवृत्तयः। गमिष्यन्त्यसुराः सर्वे स्वयमेव पराभवम्॥६॥
The demons are masters of illusion, sinful in conduct, and deceitful in their ways; all those demons will themselves go down to defeat.
Passage 7
भवन्तो धर्मपरमा नित्यं मां समुपाश्रिताः। नहि न्यक्कारमर्हन्ति असुरेभ्यो दिवौकसः॥७॥
You are supremely devoted to dharma and always take refuge in me. The inhabitants of heaven do not deserve humiliation from the demons.
Passage 8
न्यूनं त्वमृतमेवैकं युष्मासु त्रिदिवालयाः। यल्लब्ध्वा वीतमरणा विजेष्यथ परान् मृधे॥८॥
Dwellers in heaven, only one thing is lacking among you: nectar. Obtaining it, you will be free from death and conquer your enemies in battle. The Scale and Danger of the Churning
Passage 9
सिन्धोर्गर्भे तदमृतमस्ति देवाः सुदुर्लभम्। अतस्तमेव सोपायाः सिन्धुं मथितुमिच्छत॥९॥
Gods, that exceedingly difficult-to-obtain nectar lies within the ocean's depths. Therefore, equipped with the proper means, resolve to churn that very ocean.
Passage 10
अगाधः पयसां राशिः सर्वरत्ननिकेतनः। कल्पद्रुमजनिः साक्षाद्वरुणस्यालयो महान्॥१०॥
That unfathomable mass of waters is the dwelling of every jewel, the very birthplace of wish-granting trees, and the great abode of Varuṇa.
Passage 11
ममापि शय्याभवनं विषस्याप्यमृतस्य च। स्थानभूतो जलनिधिर्मथितुं शक्यते कथम्॥११॥
It is also my chamber and bed and the dwelling place of both poison and nectar. How can such an ocean be churned?
Passage 12
अहो तादृश एवास्य मन्थदण्डोऽप्यपेक्षितः। गम्भीरस्य तलस्पर्शोऽप्यस्य सम्भाव्यते न च॥१२॥
A churning staff equal to it in scale is required; yet this ocean is so deep that even touching its bottom seems impossible.
Passage 13
अपेक्ष्यं तादृगेवास्य नेत्रं मन्थनहेतवे। तादृशा एव चापेक्ष्या मथितारो महाबलाः॥१३॥
A churning rope of the same magnitude is needed, as are churners of corresponding and immense strength.
Passage 14
यादसां भूरिजीवानां कदनं च भवेदिह। मकरौघालयो ह्येष सुगम्भीरः पयोनिधिः॥१४॥
The churning will destroy multitudes of aquatic creatures, for this extremely deep ocean is home to hosts of sea monsters.
Passage 15
सुदुर्घटमतो मन्ये मन्थनं क्षीरवारिधेः। पुरस्ताद्विषमे तस्य त्रैलोक्यजनमारणम्॥१५॥
I therefore consider the churning of the Ocean of Milk exceedingly difficult. Before its nectar will come the terrible poison capable of killing the beings of all three worlds.
Passage 16
मूर्च्छान्धकारनिविडं प्रादुर्भूतं भवेदितः। येन नाशस्त्रिजगतां सम्भाव्यो दुर्धरात्मना॥१६॥
Dense with the darkness of unconsciousness, that unconquerable poison will manifest from it and could bring destruction to the three worlds.
Passage 17
अशक्यञ्चामृतोत्पाद उपायैर्योजितैर्विना। इत्यहं मनसा दूये भवदर्थे दिवौकसः॥१७॥
Producing the nectar is impossible without carefully coordinated means. Thus, inhabitants of heaven, my mind is troubled on your behalf.
Passage 18
उपायेन तु यच्छक्यं न तच्छक्यं विचारणैः। अतः प्रयतितव्यं व उपायानां समृद्धये॥१८॥
What can be accomplished by an effective means cannot be accomplished by deliberation alone. Therefore you must strive to assemble all the necessary means.
Passage 19
साहाय्यमत्र भवतामहमाचरिष्याम्यात्मप्रभावसमुपेत उपात्तनीतिः। उच्चैर्मया निभृतमाहित एव यत्नः साफल्यमेष्याति यथार्थमनोरथेन॥१९॥
I shall assist you here, applying my own power and adopting the required strategy. The great endeavor quietly set in motion by me will attain success and fulfill its intended purpose. *Thus ends Chapter 80 of the Dakṣiṇa-khaṇḍa of the Bhūṣuṇḍi Rāmāyaṇa, containing Viṣṇu's counsel during the churning of the ocean.*
