Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— रामः सुखितगोपेन्द्रमाबभाष इदं वचः। इयं ते कल्पिता तात मयातिथ्याय संविधा॥१॥
Brahmā said: Rāma addressed Sukhita, lord of the cowherds: “Dear father, I have created this entire arrangement to honor you as my guest.
Passage 2
सानुगः सपरीवारः सबन्धुः ससुहृज्जनः। त्वमेतां संविधां तात विनियोक्तुमिहार्हसि॥२॥
“Together with your followers, family, relatives, and friends, dear father, please make full use of everything provided here.
Passage 3
अवगाह्य सरःस्वच्छसलिलेषु समन्ततः। धृताङ्गरागवसनभूषणो भुङ्क्ष्व भोजनम्॥३॥
“Bathe in the clear waters of the lakes all around. Then apply fragrant unguents, put on garments and ornaments, and eat the feast.
Passage 4
इह ते सार्थगा गोपा गोप्यश्च कृतमज्जनाः। भूषयन्तु वपुष्यद्धा मणिकाञ्चनभूषणैः॥४॥
“Let the cowherd men and women who traveled here with you bathe and then adorn their bodies with ornaments of gems and gold.
Passage 5
धृताङ्गरागाः ससुखं दिव्यनूतनवाससः। दिव्यभोजनसामग्रीं भुञ्जतां तावका इह॥५॥
“Let your people happily apply fragrant cosmetics, dress in new celestial garments, and partake of the divine foods gathered here.
Passage 6
यत्र कुत्रापि सौलभ्यं दिव्यभूषणवाससाम्। उद्वर्तनाङ्गरागाणां भोज्यानां चाप्यनेकशः॥६॥
“Everywhere there is an abundance of divine ornaments, clothing, cleansing powders, fragrances, and countless foods.
Passage 7
पिबन्तु दिव्यमैरेयं वहन्ति सरितोऽमलाः। तासां कूलनिकुञ्जेषु कल्पद्रुमतलेषु च॥७॥
“Let them drink the divine fragrant beverages carried by the pure rivers and sit in the bowers along their banks beneath the wish-fulfilling trees.
Passage 8
विश्रमन्तु व्रजजनाः कुर्वन्तु विविधाः कथाः। अश्नन्तु विविधान् भोगान् दिव्यभूषणभूषिताः॥८॥
“Let the people of Vraja rest, exchange many stories, adorn themselves with celestial ornaments, and enjoy every kind of pleasure.
Passage 9
इमास्तात विजानीहि जानक्याः परिचारिकाः। तवातिथ्यविधानार्थमाहृता इह संगताः॥९॥
“Dear father, know that these are Jānakī's attendants. They have been summoned and gathered here to arrange your hospitality.
Passage 10
इमाः परिचरिष्यन्ति गोपान् गोपीश्च सादरम्। स्नानाभ्यञ्जनसंस्कारभोजनादिषु कर्मसु॥१०॥
“They will respectfully attend the cowherd men and women in bathing, massage, grooming, dining, and every related service.
Passage 11
माङ्गल्यका मे जननी ययाहं पोषितो व्रजे। सानुगा सपरीवारा भोगान् भुङ्क्तां यथेप्सितान्॥११॥
“Māṅgalyakā is my mother, by whom I was nourished in Vraja. Let her, with her followers and family, enjoy whatever delights she desires.
Passage 12
इह भुक्त्वातिसुलभा विविधा भोगसंविधाः। विहरन्तु चिरं गोपा गोप्यश्च प्रीतिपूर्वकम्॥१२॥
“After enjoying the many readily available provisions here, let the cowherd men and women sport happily for a long time. Sītā's Personal Offering
Passage 13
स्वयं करसरोजाभ्यां जानक्या परिपाचितम्। अन्नं चतुर्विधं स्वादु भवान् भुङ्क्तां यथेप्सितम्॥१३॥
“Please eat as much as you desire of the delicious four kinds of food that Jānakī has personally cooked with her lotus hands.
Passage 14
अत्यर्थं सादरमना जनकस्य सुता त्वयि। आतिथ्यं कर्तुमिच्छन्ति पपाच विविधं स्वयम्॥१४॥
“Janaka's daughter holds you in the highest respect. Wishing to honor you as a guest, she personally cooked many preparations.
Passage 15
अयमति रमणीयश्चित्रकूटो महीध्रः शिखरनिकरशोभाव्याप्यदिङ्मण्डलाश्रः। सुरतरुविपिनाढ्यः सर्वसम्पत्समेतो ननु विहरणयोग्यस्तावकानां जनानाम्॥१५॥
“This exceedingly lovely Citrakūṭa Mountain spreads the beauty of its clustered peaks across the quarters. Rich with forests of celestial trees and every prosperity, it is surely a fitting place for your people to enjoy themselves.
Passage 16
इह कल्पतरुच्छायामवलम्ब्य व्रजौकसः। मन्दाकिनीमरुद्वीचिवीजिता विगतश्रमाः॥१६॥
“Let the people of Vraja rest here in the shade of wish-fulfilling trees, their weariness removed as waves of breeze from the Mandākinī fan them.
Passage 17
विहरन्तु चिरं तात देशकालोचितैः सुखैः। इह स्मरन्तु सुप्रीताः प्रमुद्वनभवं सुखम्॥१७॥
“Dear father, let them sport here for a long time with pleasures suited to the place and season, joyfully remembering the happiness born in Pramoda-vana.
Passage 18
गोपा गोप्यस्तथान्योन्यं विहृत्य सकुतूहलम्। गायन्तु कलनादेन शैलेन्द्रं गर्जयन्तु च॥१८॥
“Let the cowherd men and women delight in one another's company, sing in melodious voices, and make the lord of mountains resound.
Passage 19
अमुष्य कन्दरास्वन्तर्ज्वलद् दिव्यौषधित्विषा। दीपप्रकाशरुचिरा यापयन्तु च यामिनीः॥१९॥
“Within its caves, made lovely as though by lamplight through the glow of shining divine herbs, let them pass their nights.
Passage 20
आभिः सार्धं मैथिलेन्द्रस्य पुत्री नित्यैकान्तावासतो बद्धमौना। अद्यालापैः प्रीतिपूर्वं मनोज्ञैः किञ्चित्क्रीडाकौशलं संविनक्तु॥२०॥
“The daughter of Mithilā's king, long quiet through living in secluded places, may now join these companions in affectionate, delightful conversation and share something of her playful arts. The Joy of Reunion
Passage 21
सुचिरं गोपगोपीभिर्वियोगासह्यवेदनाम्। प्राप्तोऽहमद्य तत्सङ्गाद्भविष्यामि चिरं सुखी॥२१॥
“For so long I have suffered the unbearable pain of separation from the cowherd men and women. Now that I have regained their company, I shall remain happy for a long time.
Passage 22
लोके प्रियजनैः सार्धं दुर्लभः खलु संगमः। स एव यस्मिन् भवति तद्दिनं सुदिनं भवेत्॥२२॥
“In this world reunion with beloved people is truly rare. The day on which it occurs is alone a blessed day.
Passage 23
त इमे मिलिता ह्यद्य प्रिया मे व्रजवासिनः। नानेन सदृशः कश्चिद्दिवसो भविता मम॥२३॥
“Today these beloved residents of Vraja have reunited with me. No other day will ever equal this one for me.” Rāma Directs Lakṣmaṇa
Passage 24
इत्युक्त्वा गोपशार्दूलं रघुवंशविभूषणः। उवाच लक्ष्मणं भूयः प्रेम्णा मसृणया गिरा॥२४॥
After speaking thus to the tiger among cowherds, the ornament of Raghu's line again addressed Lakṣmaṇa in a voice softened by love.
Passage 25
भोज्यन्तां मम मित्राणि सौमित्रे व्रजवासिनः। यथा तृप्येयुरखिला विविधैर्भोग्यवस्तुभिः॥२५॥
“Son of Sumitrā, feed my friends from Vraja so that every one of them is completely satisfied by the many enjoyable provisions.
Passage 26
आज्ञापयतु सानन्दं देवी स्वाः परिचारिकाः। कमलेशीमुखा मुख्याः सेवार्थं व्रजवासिनाम्॥२६॥
“Let the Goddess joyfully command her foremost attendants, headed by Kamaleśī, to serve the residents of Vraja.
Passage 27
भवान् परिचरत्वेतान् प्रियान् मे व्रजवासिनः। अहं परिचरिष्यामि स्वयमत्यर्थमादृतः॥२७॥
“You attend these beloved people of Vraja, and I too shall personally serve them with the greatest respect.
Passage 28
नन्वेते साधवो भक्ताः प्रीता मयि विशेषतः। मम प्रीत्येह सम्प्राप्ता महोदारा व्रजौकसः॥२८॥
“These noble devotees are especially attached to me. The generous people of Vraja have come here solely from love for me.
Passage 29
यथा विशेषात्तृप्येयुः सर्वकामोपभोजिताः। तथा कार्यं त्वया वीर मया च मम भार्यया॥२९॥
“Hero, you, I, and my wife must therefore ensure that every desire is fulfilled and that they are satisfied in the fullest measure.
Passage 30
अत्यादरेण प्रीत्या च सेवया विनयेन च। तोषणीयाः प्रयत्नेन प्रिया मे व्रजवासिनः॥३०॥
“With the greatest honor, affection, service, and humility, we must carefully bring delight to my beloved residents of Vraja. Love Greater Than Royal Ayodhyā
Passage 31
अपि स्मरसि किं न त्वं भ्रातस्तत्र वयं यथा। प्रमुद्वनेऽतिसुखिता उषिता बहुवत्सरान्॥३१॥
“Brother, do you not remember how we lived there in Pramoda-vana for many years in the greatest happiness?
Passage 32
तातेन गोकुलेन्द्रेण मात्रा माङ्गल्यया तथा। लालिता विविधान् भोगान् प्रीतिपूर्वमभुञ्ज्महि॥३२॥
“Nurtured by our father, lord of Gokula, and by mother Māṅgalyā, we lovingly enjoyed many kinds of delights.
Passage 33
न तथाखिलभूमीशे कृतसप्रेमलालने। ताते दशरथेऽयोध्यां वयं सानन्दमूषिम॥३३॥
“Even when our father Daśaratha, lord of the whole earth, reared us with love, we did not dwell in Ayodhyā with happiness equal to that.
Passage 34
अन्यदेव हि चामीषां मयि प्रेमोदितं मनः। ये पुत्रदारवित्ताढ्यं गृहं त्यक्त्वेह संगताः॥३४॥
“The love that has arisen for me in their hearts is of another order entirely. They abandoned homes rich with children, spouses, and wealth to gather here.
Passage 35
नन्वमीषां मनोऽत्यन्तं मयि प्रेमैकबन्धुरम्। अतोऽहमपि चैतेषु सानुबन्धोऽस्मि सौहृदात्॥३५॥
“Their minds are bound to me by love alone. Therefore friendship has bound me to them as well.
Passage 36
गन्तुमेतान् न दास्यामि बन्धून् मे व्रजवासिनः। इहैव वासयिष्यामि शैलेन्द्रे बहुवत्सरम्॥३६॥
“I will not allow these relatives of mine, the people of Vraja, to leave. I shall settle them here upon the lord of mountains for many years.
Passage 37
सर्वकामोदिते दिव्येऽस्मिन् गिरावेतान् मम प्रियान्। सेविष्ये सहजप्रेमवशीभूतान् व्रजौकसः॥३७॥
“On this divine mountain where every desire arises fulfilled, I shall serve my beloved people of Vraja, for their natural love has brought me under their control. A New Settlement by the Mandākinī
Passage 38
इहायं विपुलो देशः सर्वकामप्रपूरणः। गोपालानां गवां चैव गोपीनां च विशेषतः॥३८॥
“This spacious region fulfills every desire, especially for the cowherds, the cows, and the cowherd women.
Passage 39
अविदूरेऽत्र शैलस्य मन्दाकिन्यास्तटावनौ। महद्वनमिदं भाति सर्वर्तुसुखवर्धनम्॥३९॥
“Not far from this mountain, in the forest along the Mandākinī's bank, lies a great woodland that increases happiness in every season.
Passage 40
विपुलं गोकुलेन्द्रस्य वासयोग्यं समन्ततः। गवां गोष्ठोचितं स्थानं प्रमोदविपिनं यथा॥४०॥
“It is spacious and fully suited as a home for Gokula's lord and as a cow station, just like Pramoda forest.
Passage 41
तद्वत्त्वहमत्रार्थे मन्त्रयिष्येऽमुना रहः। यथेहैव भवेद्वासः सुहृदां मे व्रजौकसाम्॥४१॥
“I shall privately deliberate with him about this matter so that my friends, the residents of Vraja, may make their home right here.
Passage 42
आतिथ्यं तु भवानद्य प्रथमागमनाह्निकम्। विशेषेण करोत्वेषां विज्ञाप्यं तु पुनर्भवेत्॥४२॥
“Today you should first give them exceptional hospitality for the day of their arrival. Our further proposal can be presented afterward.
Passage 43
निकेतने तु दिव्येऽस्मिंस्त्वया प्राकाम्यनिर्मिते। प्रवेशय व्रजाधीशं सानुगं ससुहृज्जनम्॥४२॥
“Lead the lord of Vraja, together with his followers and friends, into this divine residence manifested by your sovereign power.” The source repeats marker 42 here; this is canonical passage 43.
Passage 44
संस्कार्योद्वर्तनाभ्यङ्गमज्जनालेपनादिभिः। भोजयान्नानि दिव्यानि सत्पात्रेषु चतुर्विधम्॥४४॥
“Honor them with cleansing powders, oil massage, bathing, fragrant ointments, and the other rites, then feed them the four kinds of divine food in excellent vessels.
Passage 45
पुरस्तात्सह गोपालैर्गोपराजं भजस्व भोः। ततो माङ्गल्यकां सर्वगोपिगणसमन्विताम्॥४५॥
“First, dear one, serve the cowherd king together with the cowherd men. Then serve Māṅgalyakā with the entire company of cowherd women.
Passage 46
गोकुलेन्द्रं भवान् भ्रातः सेवतां सर्वभोगदः। माङ्गल्यकां जनकजा सह सर्वसखीजनैः॥४६॥
“Brother, you should serve the lord of Gokula, granting every enjoyment, while Janaka's daughter and all her companions serve Māṅgalyakā.
Passage 47
इत्युक्तो रघुपतिना सुमुग्धवाक्यैः सौमित्रिः परिचरितुं समस्तभोगैः। गोपेन्द्रं सह सकलैः सुहृज्जनौघैः प्रासादं निखिलसुखान्वितं निनाय॥४७॥
Thus addressed by the lord of the Raghus in these tender, charming words, Sumitrā's son led the cowherd lord and the entire host of his friends into the palace filled with every delight, there to honor them with all its enjoyments.
