Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— श्रुत्वा सौमित्रिवचनमर्थवद्रघुपुङ्गवः। ऊचे तदनुमत्यैव भक्तकामप्रपूरणः॥१॥
Brahmā said: Hearing Lakṣmaṇa's meaningful words, the foremost Raghu, who completely fulfills his devotees' desires, spoke in agreement with him.
Passage 2
श्रीराम उवाच— ममाप्येतन्मतं भ्रातर्यदाह रुचिरं भवान्। चित्रकूटे गिरिवरे सदा रंस्यामि निश्चितम्॥२॥
Śrī Rāma said: “Brother, my own resolve is the same beautiful thought you have expressed: I shall certainly delight forever upon excellent Citrakūṭa Mountain.
Passage 3
विधान्तरेण करवै देवकार्याण्यशेषतः। स्वयं स्थास्यामि सततमिहैव रमणोत्सुकः॥३॥
“Through another mode I shall carry out all the gods' work, while I myself remain right here forever, eager for loving delight.
Passage 4
यथा प्रमोदविपिनं नित्यं प्रियतमं मम। तथैव सर्वशोभाढ्यश्चित्रकूटः प्रियो मम॥४॥
“Just as the eternal Pramoda grove is most dear to me, so too is Citrakūṭa, endowed with every splendor, dear to me.
Passage 5
इहस्थः सततं कुर्वे रमणं प्रियया सह। सर्वर्तुसुभगो ह्येष नित्यं कुसुमितैर्द्रुमैः॥५॥
“Remaining here, I constantly delight with my beloved. This mountain is lovely in every season, its trees forever in bloom.
Passage 6
यथा प्रमुद्वनं त्यक्त्वा नैमि क्षणमपि क्वचित्। तथैव चित्रकूटाद्रिं न जहामि कदाचन॥६॥
“Just as I never go anywhere for even a moment after leaving Pramuda-vana, so I never abandon Citrakūṭa Mountain.
Passage 7
कामतायां मनोज्ञायां चक्राङ्किततनौ सदा। विहरामि प्रियाक्रीडः प्रमोदविपिने यथा॥७॥
“At lovely Kāmatā, my body always marked with the discus, I sport with my beloved just as I do in the Pramoda grove.
Passage 8
एषोऽस्माकं भक्तवर्यश्चित्रकूटो मनोहरः। यत्र तिष्ठामि सौमित्रे सर्वर्तुप्रियकेलिकृत्॥८॥
“Lovely Citrakūṭa is our foremost devotee. Here, son of Sumitrā, I remain and perform delightful pastimes in every season.
Passage 9
न मे वैकुण्ठभवनं श्वेतद्वीपमपि प्रियम्। रमाभवनमेवापि यथा मे कामता प्रिया॥९॥
“Neither the abode of Vaikuṇṭha, Śvetadvīpa, nor even Ramā's dwelling is as dear to me as Kāmatā.
Passage 10
शिलातलेष्वधिष्ठाय चित्रकूटगिरेः सदा। विहरामि दधत्केलिं देवानां जनयन्मुदम्॥१०॥
“I forever sport upon Citrakūṭa Mountain's stone terraces, sustaining my pastimes and bringing joy to the gods. The Sanctity of Citrakūṭa
Passage 11
सुदुर्लभोऽपि सर्वत्र लोकेषु भजतामहम्। चित्रकूटाचले रम्ये सुलभोऽस्मि न संशयः॥११॥
“Though exceedingly difficult for worshipers to attain everywhere in all the worlds, upon lovely Citrakūṭa Mountain I am easily attained—there is no doubt.
Passage 12
यो मत्पादाङ्कितमिमं गिरिराजं सुगह्वरम्। स्मरिष्यति क्षणं मर्त्यस्तस्याहं सुलभो भवे॥१२॥
“If a mortal remembers for even a moment this king of mountains, rich in caves and marked by my feet, I become easy for that person to attain.
Passage 13
स्थले स्थले महत्पुण्यं तीर्थकोटिशताधिकम्। चित्रकूटे मम भ्रातः स्थानभूते मनोहरे॥१३॥
“Brother, at every place upon lovely Citrakūṭa, which is my own abode, there is immense sanctity surpassing hundreds of millions of sacred fords.
Passage 14
किं तस्य बहुभिर्यज्ञैः प्रादक्षिण्येन वा भुवः। यश्चित्रकूटं सततं सेवते सुखवर्धनम्॥१४॥
“What need has one for many sacrifices or for circling the earth if one constantly serves happiness-increasing Citrakūṭa?
Passage 15
यावन्ति शिखराण्यस्य भास्वन्ति परितो दिशम्। तेषामेकतमं दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च सुकृती भवेत्॥१५॥
“However many of its peaks shine throughout the directions, by seeing and touching even one of them a person becomes meritorious.
Passage 16
स्फाटिकी यत्र विपुला शिला शैले प्रतिष्ठिता। तत्र मां स्मरतो नित्यं हृदये प्रविशाम्यहम्॥१६॥
“Where the great crystal slab stands upon the mountain, I enter the heart of one who continually remembers me there.
Passage 17
यो दूराद्दृश्यति गिरेः शृङ्गाणि खलु कौतुकात्। तस्य देहात्पलायन्ते पातकानि महान्त्यपि॥१७॥
“If someone looks with wonder upon the mountain's peaks even from afar, great sins flee from that person's body. The printed root has dṛśyati here; the translation follows its contextual active sense.
Passage 18
स्पृष्ट्वा तु चित्रकूटस्य शृङ्गं नभसि विस्तृतम्। अनन्तकोटितीर्थेषु स्नातो भवति तत्क्षणात्॥१८॥
“By touching a sky-reaching peak of Citrakūṭa, one at that very moment gains the fruit of bathing at countless millions of sacred fords.
Passage 19
यत्किञ्चित्कुरुते चात्र सुकृतं कर्म मानवः। गिरिराजप्रभावेण तदनन्तगुणं भवेत्॥१९॥
“Whatever meritorious deed a person performs here becomes infinitely multiplied through the power of the king of mountains.
Passage 20
दत्ताः स्युः कोटिशो गावः स्नाताः स्युस्तीर्थकोटयः। कृताः स्युः कोटिशो यज्ञा योऽत्र यात्रामनुव्रजेत्॥२०॥
“One who undertakes pilgrimage here gains the fruit of giving millions of cows, bathing at millions of sacred fords, and performing millions of sacrifices.
Passage 21
अत्र वाति सदा वायुः शीताङ्गस्पर्शसौरभः। यं स्पृष्ट्वा लभते मर्त्यो जीवन्मुक्तिमनुत्तमाम्॥२१॥
“A breeze forever blows here, cool upon the limbs and fragrant. Touched by it, a mortal attains the unsurpassed state of liberation while living. The Three Rāsa Celebrations
Passage 22
अत्र वेणुनिनादेन मोहयित्वा सुराङ्गनाः। ताभिः सार्धं करिष्यामि रासलीलामहोत्सवम्॥२२॥
“Here I shall enchant the celestial women with the sound of my flute and celebrate the great festival of the rāsa-līlā with them.
Passage 23
महान् प्रमुद्वने रासश्चित्रकूटेऽत्र मध्यमः। लङ्कायामधमश्चेति त्रिरासकल्पितोऽस्म्यहम्॥२३॥
“The rāsa at Pramuda-vana is the highest, the one here at Citrakūṭa is intermediate, and the one in Laṅkā is the lowest. Thus I have ordained three rāsa celebrations.
Passage 24
ये मे स्वरूपभूता वै व्रजभक्ता महोदयाः। तैः साकमुत्तमा लीला प्रमोदविपिने मम॥२४॥
“My exalted Vraja devotees are embodiments of my own essential nature. My highest līlā with them takes place in the Pramoda grove.
Passage 25
या दैव्यो ज्ञानविज्ञानसम्पन्ना मन्महिषीपदस्पृहाः। तत्सार्धं मध्यमा लीला मिश्रप्रेमाङ्किता यतः॥२५॥
“The divine women are endowed with knowledge and realization and desire the station of my queens. My līlā with them is intermediate because it is marked by mixed love.
Passage 26
रावणेन तु या रुद्धाः कन्यास्त्रिजगति स्थिताः। तत्सार्धं मध्यमा लीला काममात्राङ्किता यतः॥२६॥
“The maidens from throughout the three worlds whom Rāvaṇa has imprisoned take part in my intermediate līlā, for it is marked by desire alone. The edition prints madhyamā (“intermediate”) here, although verse 23 calls the Laṅkā rāsa adhamā (“lowest”); both readings are preserved without silently harmonizing them.
Passage 27
न सर्वथाहं त्यक्ष्यामि चित्रकूटं महाचलम्। त्वया जनकपुत्र्या च सहितोऽत्र चिरं रमे॥२७॥
“I shall never, under any circumstances, abandon mighty Citrakūṭa. Together with you and Janaka's daughter, I shall delight here forever.
Passage 28
अत्र मे व्रजभक्तानां शुद्धप्रेमरसस्पृशाम्। सङ्गमः सुखितादीनां भविष्यति न संशयः॥२८॥
“Here my Vraja devotees, who relish the rasa of pure love, will meet Sukhita and her companions—there is no doubt. The Divine Mission Through Another Form
Passage 29
इहस्थ एव त्रिदिवालयानां पौलस्त्यमुख्यैरसुरैर्विद्रुतानाम्। कार्यं करिष्याम्यहमुग्रवीर्यं धुन्वन् धनुः संस्थित आजिमूर्ध्नि॥२९॥
“Even while remaining here, I shall accomplish the work of the celestial realms, which are harried by the demons headed by the descendant of Pulastya. Manifesting fierce valor, I shall stand at the forefront of battle and brandish my bow.”
