Passage 1
भरत उवाच— नमो ब्रह्मशर्वादिदेवेन्द्रवन्द्ये परे व्योम्नि नित्यं स्वधाम्नि प्रतिष्ठे। सदा सिन्धुजासुन्दरीसंविमृग्ये श्रिया संयुते श्रीप्रभोः पादुके वाम्॥१॥
Bharata said: “I bow to you two sandals of the blessed Lord, worshiped by Brahmā, Śiva, Indra, and the other gods, eternally established in your own abode in the supreme sky, sought by beautiful Lakṣmī, and united with splendor.
Passage 2
सहस्रार्कशीतांशुविद्योतिरूपे महामोहतामिस्रविच्छेदशक्ते। दुरन्ते भवाम्भोनिधौ दिव्यनौके प्रभोः पादुके वां सदा सन्नतोऽहम्॥२॥
“Your form shines like a thousand suns and moons, and your power cuts through the darkness of great delusion. You are the divine boat upon the unfathomable ocean of becoming; Lord's sandals, I bow to you always.
Passage 3
पदं श्रेयसां दत्तनिःश्रेयसं यद्विपत्काननोच्छित्तिकर्माकुठारम्। महासिद्धिमद्भूरिभाग्योदयाढ्यं विभातीशितुः पादुकायुग्ममेतत्॥३॥
“This pair of the Lord's sandals shines as the station of every good, granting the highest good, an axe that clears the forest of calamity, rich with great perfection and the rise of abundant fortune.
Passage 4
सदानन्दपीयूषधाराघनाली जगत्पापसन्तापनिर्यापणाय। त्रिवेदीशिरःसद्मसर्वस्वभूतं प्रभोः पादुकायुग्ममुद्भातु चित्ते॥४॥
“May the Lord's sandals arise in my heart as a dense succession of streams of the nectar of eternal bliss, removing the world's sin and torment, the entire treasure of the abode at the head of the three Vedas.
Passage 5
सदा सम्पदामेकमुच्चैर्निकेतं महाघोरसंसारपाथोधिसेतुः। सुदुर्ज्ञेयतत्त्वप्रबोधैकहेतुश्चिरं शोभतां पादुकायुग्ममेतत्॥५॥
“May this pair of sandals long shine as the one exalted dwelling of prosperity, the bridge across saṃsāra's dreadful ocean, and the sole cause of awakening to truth that is so difficult to know.
Passage 6
अशेषप्रमाणप्रमेयार्थरूपे शिवब्रह्मकोटीररत्नांशुमिश्रे। सदानन्दसम्पत्तिसन्दोहदाने प्रभोः पादुके प्राप्य भक्त्या भजेऽहम्॥६॥
“You embody the meaning of every means and object of knowledge and mingle with the jeweled rays of Śiva's and Brahmā's crowns. Having attained you, the Lord's sandals, I worship with devotion, for you bestow the full treasure of eternal bliss.
Passage 7
परं चिन्नभश्चारुचिच्चन्द्रकान्त्या सदोदीतया जातनित्यप्रकाशम्। तदातिष्ठतो यः स्थिते स्वे महिम्नि प्रभोस्तादृग्रूपे भजे पादुके ते॥७॥
“The supreme sky of consciousness is eternally illumined by the lovely light of its moon of awareness. I worship the Lord's two sandals, abiding in their own glory as that very form.
Passage 8
न यद्भासयत्यर्कबिम्बप्रकाशो न चन्द्रो न वह्निर्न वा विद्युतोऽपि। इदं भाति सर्वं यदेवानुभाति प्रभोः पादुकायुग्ममस्म्याश्रितस्तम्॥८॥
“Neither sunlight nor moon, fire, or lightning illumines it; by its radiance all this shines. I have taken refuge in that pair of the Lord's sandals.
Passage 9
न जाग्रन्न सुप्तिर्न वा सा सुषुप्तिस्तुरीयं यदन्तत्र ये संस्थिते वै। चिदानन्दसन्मात्रनित्यस्वरूपे भजेऽहं सदा स्वामिनः पादुके ते॥९॥
“It is neither waking, dream, nor deep sleep, but the fourth reality in which they abide. I always worship my Lord's sandals, whose eternal nature is pure being, consciousness, and bliss.” Brahmā's Praise and the Daily Offering
Passage 10
ब्रह्मोवाच— जगत्यर्चने ध्यानपूजानतीनां यदेकं पदं सर्वकल्याणधाम। सकामैरकामैस्तथा सर्वकामैस्तदाराधितं पादुकायुग्ममीडे॥१०॥
Brahmā said: “I praise the pair of sandals, the single goal of worship, meditation, adoration, and homage in this world, the abode of every auspicious good, worshiped by those with desires, without desires, and with every desire.
Passage 11
अमूर्तं तथा मूर्तिमद्वस्तु किञ्चिद्गुणैः सङ्गतं निर्गुणं वामदेव। यदेकं तथानेकमात्मप्रकाशं परं ब्रह्म तत्पादुकायुग्ममीडे॥११॥
“It is formless and yet whatever possesses form, associated with qualities and yet qualityless, one and also many, self-luminous supreme Brahman. I praise that pair of sandals.
Passage 12
अशेषावतारावतारिस्वरूपं समस्तागमाम्नायमार्गैकसेव्यम्। सुसिद्धान्तिनामन्विताशेषवाक्यं भजे पादुकायुग्ममेकं समस्यम्॥१२॥
“It is the nature of every avatāra and their source, served by every path of Āgama and Veda, and the one harmonious subject of all declarations understood by sound teachers. I worship that pair of sandals.
Passage 13
यतो वर्णिताशेषतत्त्वप्रभूतिस्तथाशेषतत्त्वानि यत्राप्ययन्ति। परं तत्त्वमेकं परब्रह्मरूपं भजे पादुकायुग्मं सीतापतेस्तत्॥१३॥
“From it arises the abundance of all the principles that have been described, and into it all those principles dissolve. I worship that pair of Sītā's Lord—the one supreme truth in the form of transcendent Brahman.
Passage 14
पशुग्रामपुत्राङ्गनादीनि नित्यं नृणां यत्प्रसादात्फलान्यैहिकानि। भवन्ति प्रभूतानि चामुष्मिकाणि स्मरेत्को न ते पादुके राघवस्य॥१४॥
“Through their grace people always obtain abundant fruits in this world—herds, sons, spouses, and more—and fruits in the next. Who would not remember those sandals of Rāghava?
Passage 15
नमः कोटिकल्याणकल्पद्रुमाभ्यां परानन्दसन्दोहचिन्तामणिभ्याम्। अपि स्वैरमात्मप्रबोधप्रदाभ्यां सीताभर्तुरङ्घ्रिद्वयीपादुकाभ्याम्॥१५॥
“Homage to the sandals of the two feet of Sītā's Lord, wish-fulfilling trees of millions of blessings, wish-granting jewels of abundant supreme bliss, freely bestowing awakening to the Self.”
Passage 16
इत्यभिष्टूय भरतो रामराजस्य पादुके। पुष्पाञ्जलिं ददावुच्चैः पूजान्ते प्रतिवासरम्॥१६॥
Having thus praised the sandals of King Rāma, Bharata offered a raised handful of flowers at the end of worship every day.
Passage 17
अन्योऽपि मनुजो यस्तु भक्त्या सम्पूज्य पादुके। निवेदयति पूजान्ते मन्त्रपुष्पाञ्जलिं सदा॥१७॥
Any other person who worships the sandals with devotion and always offers this mantra-handful of flowers at worship's end—
Passage 18
तस्य सर्वार्थसिद्धिः स्यान्मन्त्रसिद्धिरनुत्तमा। श्रीरामपादुकायुग्मप्रसादः स्यादनन्तरम्॥१८॥
—attains every objective, unsurpassed mantra-perfection, and thereafter the grace of Śrī Rāma's pair of sandals. Fruit of the Reign of the Sandals
Passage 19
इति ते पादुकाराज्यं रामस्य त्रिजगत्प्रभोः। वर्णितं यन्मया तुभ्यं शृणुयात्तत्प्रयत्नतः॥१९॥
Whoever attentively hears this account I have given you of the reign of the sandals of Rāma, Lord of the three worlds—
Passage 20
स सर्वकामानाप्नोति भक्तिं चास्य सुदुर्लभाम्। अन्ते श्रीरामचरणं लभते नात्र संशयः॥२०॥
—obtains every desire and Rāma's exceedingly rare devotion, and at the end attains Śrī Rāma's feet. Of this there is no doubt.
Passage 21
कामदा शुद्धिदा नृणां बुद्धिदा भूरिभुक्तिदा। मुक्तिदा सर्वकल्याणदायिनी रामपादुका॥२१॥
Rāma's sandals grant desire, purity, understanding, abundant enjoyment, liberation, and every auspicious good.
Passage 22
विरहोद्वेगनिर्मुक्तिर्भरस्य यथाभवत्। तथा भक्तिमतां नृणां पादुकायाः प्रसादतः॥२२॥
Just as Bharata became free from the anguish of separation, so devoted people are freed through the sandals' grace.
Passage 23
व्याप्नोति नैव विरहो दुःसहोऽपि सीतापतेः। अमन्दानन्दसन्दोहसुधाशीतलिते हृदि॥२३॥
Even unbearable separation from Sītā's Lord cannot overwhelm a heart cooled by the nectar of abundant, undiminished bliss.
Passage 24
करुणा रघुनाथस्य भक्तेषु परिवर्तते या। सैव विश्वासभूरेका नृणां मोहतमोजुषाम्॥२४॥
Raghunātha's compassion that moves among his devotees is itself the one great ground of trust for people dwelling in delusion's darkness.
Passage 25
ब्रह्मोवाच— अनन्यकरुणाशाली प्रभुरेको रघूद्वहः। तवास्मीति ब्रुवन् मर्त्यो वशीकुर्यात्क्षणेन यम्॥२५॥
Brahmā said: The scion of Raghu is the one Lord of incomparable compassion. A mortal who says, “I am yours,” brings him under love's sway in an instant.
Passage 26
सकृदास्वादितं येन रामेति रसनामृतम्। तं न मायामयी घोरा भुजङ्गी दशति क्वचित्॥२६॥
The terrible serpent made of māyā never bites one who has tasted even once the nectar of the name “Rāma.”
Passage 27
वीक्षिता रघुनाथेन ये ये करुणया दृशा। ते कालपाशनिर्मुक्ताः शेरते सुखसद्मनि॥२७॥
All those upon whom Raghunātha casts his compassionate glance are freed from the noose of time and repose in the abode of happiness.
Passage 28
रघुवीरात्परो लोके न कश्चित्पुरुषो भवेत्। मोचयेत्कालपाशाद्यो भावकान् सकृदात्मनः॥२८॥
No person in the world is higher than Raghu's hero, who with a single act frees his loving contemplatives from the noose of time. *Thus ends Chapter Fifty-eight, “Conclusion of the Reign of the Sandals,” in the Southern Book of the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable primal Rāmāyaṇa.*
