Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— ते पादुके रमेशस्य रामचन्द्रस्य मञ्जुले। अनेकमणिमाणिक्यजटितस्वर्णनिर्मिते॥१॥
Brahmā said: Those lovely sandals of Rāmacandra, Lord of Ramā, were fashioned from gold and set with many jewels and precious stones.
Passage 2
समस्तसिद्धिसन्दोहवदान्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिदे। ब्रह्मादिसुरसन्दोहसंसेव्यरुचिरप्रभो॥२॥
Generous givers of every host of perfection, they bestow worldly enjoyment and liberation. Their lovely radiance is served by hosts of gods headed by Brahmā.
Passage 3
कोटिचन्द्रार्कबिम्बाभे कोटिरत्नसमुज्ज्वले। ब्रह्मानन्दरसस्थाने प्रेमानन्दसुखास्पदे॥३॥
They shine like the orbs of ten million moons and suns and blaze with ten million jewels. They are the seat of the savor of Brahman's bliss and the abode of the happiness of love's bliss.
Passage 4
सनकादिमहायोगिसंविभाव्यस्वरूपिके। महामाङ्गल्यसन्दोहवदान्ये कामधेनुके॥४॥
Their true form is contemplated by great yogis headed by Sanaka. Like wish- fulfilling cows, they generously bestow immense hosts of blessings.
Passage 5
चिन्तामणिगणाकीर्णे चिन्तितार्थविधायिके। महायोगीन्द्रमूर्ध्न्यसहस्रदलमध्यगे॥५॥
Filled with hosts of wish-granting gems, they fulfill every cherished aim. They dwell within the thousand-petaled lotus crowning the great lords of yoga.
Passage 6
स्मरणात्सर्वपापौघविनाशनमहोदृढे। कीर्तनात्सर्वकल्याणकोटिकल्पलतोपमे॥६॥
At remembrance they are immensely powerful in destroying every flood of sin; when praised, they resemble ten million wish-fulfilling vines of every good.
Passage 7
सर्वसौभाग्यसम्पन्ने सर्वामयविनाशिके। सर्वसम्पत्तिसुखदे मनोमोहतमोपहे॥७॥
Endowed with every blessing, they destroy every affliction, grant the joy of all prosperity, and dispel the darkness that deludes the mind.
Passage 8
अविद्यावरणच्छन्नजीवस्वाराज्यदायिके। महोद्द्योतमहोवृन्दविभूषितमहाप्रभो॥८॥
They grant self-sovereignty to the soul veiled by ignorance. Their great splendor is adorned by mighty multitudes of brilliant light.
Passage 9
सर्वदोषौघरहिते सर्वतो गुणभूषिते। कोटिब्रह्माण्डरचनाज्ञप्तकोटिविरञ्चिके॥९॥
Free from every host of faults, they are adorned with virtues on every side. At their command, ten million Brahmās fashion ten million universes.
Passage 10
प्रमोदवननिलये चित्तचैतन्यचन्द्रिके। सरय्वाः पुलिने रम्ये रत्नमन्दिरसंस्थिते॥१०॥
They dwell in Pramoda forest and are moonlight to the consciousness of the heart. They reside in a jeweled temple upon the lovely bank of the Sarayū.
Passage 11
महातिमिरसन्दोहसङ्कुलस्थानभासिके। स्थूलसूक्ष्मपराकारे स्थूलसूक्ष्मपरातिगे॥११॥
They illuminate places crowded with masses of deep darkness. They assume gross, subtle, and supreme forms, yet transcend the gross, subtle, and supreme.
Passage 12
शिवे गुरुस्वरूपे च सर्वविद्याविशारदे। निर्गुणे अपि भक्तानां कृपयाऽऽत्तगुणद्युते॥१२॥
They are auspicious, take the form of the guru, and are accomplished in every knowledge. Though beyond qualities, for devotees they shine with qualities assumed through grace.
Passage 13
नवे नवस्वरूपे च परमार्थप्रदर्शिके। सर्वाज्ञानतमोभेदभानुभे चिद्घनप्रभे॥१३॥
Ever new in form, they reveal the supreme meaning. Like the sun they break all the darkness of ignorance, and their radiance is compact consciousness.
Passage 14
सर्वसिद्धौघसिद्धीशे सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गले। सर्वसौभाग्यसौभाग्ये सर्वकारणकारणे॥१४॥
They are sovereign over every host of perfections, the blessing within every blessing, the good fortune within every fortune, and the cause of every cause.
Passage 15
सर्वमन्त्रावतरणे सर्वसौख्यमहास्पदे। कोटिब्रह्मशिवाराध्यस्वरूपे वचनातिगे॥१५॥
They are the source from which every mantra descends and the great abode of every happiness. Ten million Brahmās and Śivas worship their ineffable form.
Passage 16
ॐकारपञ्जरान्तःस्थे कलनादसुकोकिले। सप्तकोटिमहामन्त्रमहाराज्यसुखासने॥१६॥
They are sweet cuckoos of melodious sound dwelling within the cage of Oṃ. They sit upon the joyous imperial throne of seventy million great mantras.
Passage 17
सर्वाम्नायसमाराध्ये सर्वसिद्धान्तगोचरे। महाकारुण्यकलिते समुद्धृतचराचरे॥१७॥
All sacred traditions worship them, and every established doctrine reaches them. Filled with immense compassion, they uplift all that moves and does not.
Passage 18
आसुरानीकसन्तप्तधरणीतापमोचिके। अखण्डधारापीयूषरसवर्षाविधायिके॥१८॥
They free the earth from the torment inflicted by demonic armies and pour down the nectar's savor in an unbroken stream.
Passage 19
महोष्णेऽतिमहोष्णेभ्यः शीतलेभ्योऽतिशीतले। इन्दिरामन्दिरनिभे चन्द्रचन्दनचर्चिते॥१९॥
They are hotter than the intensely hot and cooler than the coldest. They resemble the abode of Lakṣmī and are anointed with moonlike sandal paste.
Passage 20
संसारार्णवनिमग्नसमुद्धरणपण्डिते। तरणीरमणीयाभे मणीन्द्रगणसुप्रभे॥२०॥
They are expert in raising those submerged in the ocean of worldly existence. Lovely as the sun, they shine beautifully with hosts of sovereign jewels.
Passage 21
चकोरीकृतयोगीन्द्रमानसे चन्द्रनिर्मले। श्रेयःफलौघफलिते निष्फले घोरचेतसाम्॥२१॥
Pure as the moon, they turn the minds of great yogis into longing cakora birds. They bear abundant fruits of highest good, yet are fruitless for cruel hearts.
Passage 22
आज्ञाकृतमहाराज्ये मुनिदेवेन्द्रवन्दिते। मन्दारपुष्पस्तबकपूजिते सौरभाञ्चिते॥२२॥
At their command the great kingdom is governed; sages and the lord of the gods bow to them. Worshiped with clusters of heavenly coral-tree flowers, they are filled with fragrance.
Passage 23
भूभारक्लिष्टभोगीन्द्रपरमानन्ददायिके। तापत्रयपराभूतसज्जनौघसुखप्रदे॥२३॥
They give supreme joy to the serpent king distressed by the earth's burden, and grant happiness to hosts of good people overcome by the three afflictions.
Passage 24
सम्प्रदायगुरुज्ञातमाहात्म्ये भूरिगौरवे। रहस्ये सुरहस्येभ्यः सर्वशास्त्रौघगोपिते॥२४॥
Their greatness is known to the gurus of the tradition, and their dignity is immense. More secret than every secret, they are concealed by hosts of śāstras.
Passage 25
महागुह्ये ज्ञानगम्ये भक्तिमार्गप्रकाशिके। अनुकूले स्वभक्तानामभक्तप्रतिकूलिके॥२५॥
They are the great mystery reached through knowledge and reveal the path of devotion. They favor their own devotees and oppose the undevoted.
Passage 26
महामाधुर्यमधुरे मनोमोहनकारिके। जगतामितिभीतिघ्ने प्रीतिरितिसमर्चिते॥२६॥
Sweet with supreme sweetness, they enchant the mind. They destroy the worlds' fear of calamity and are worshiped as Love itself.
Passage 27
उपासनाशास्त्रसारप्रकाशितमहागुणे। निर्दोषपूर्णगुणिके स्वतन्त्रे नित्यचेतने॥२७॥
Their great virtues are revealed by the essence of the scriptures of worship. Faultless and filled with virtues, they are independent and eternally conscious.
Passage 28
आनन्दमात्ररूपे च परब्रह्मसुखास्पदे। सजातीयविजातीयस्वगतद्वैतवर्जिते॥२८॥
Their form is bliss alone, and they are the abode of the Supreme Brahman's happiness. They are free of all duality—homogeneous, heterogeneous, or internal.
Passage 29
चमत्कारविचित्रे च रूपचित्रविचित्रिते। दैत्यध्वान्तपराभूतिप्रवीणे प्रगुणास्पदे॥२९॥
Marvelously wondrous and adorned with varied forms, they are expert in defeating the darkness of demons and are an abode of excellent virtues. Bharata Begins the Return Journey
Passage 30
स्वशिरोभूषणीकृत्य विन्यस्य गजमूर्धनि। प्रणम्य जानकीकान्तं स्वप्रभुं पुरुषोत्तमम्॥३०॥
Bharata made the sandals the ornament of his own head and then placed them upon the elephant's head. He bowed to his Lord, the Supreme Person and beloved of Jānakī.
Passage 31
प्रतस्थौ भरतः श्रीमान् शत्रुघ्नेन समन्वितः। आस्थाय स्यन्दनवरं पादुकालाभहर्षितः॥३१॥
Delighted at receiving the sandals, glorious Bharata mounted the finest chariot and departed together with Śatrughna.
