Chapter context and opening material

Asked how Rāma spent the night at Śṛṅgaverapura and crossed the Gaṅgā, Guha recounts the events to Bharata. Rāma declined a fine bed and slept with Sītā upon leaves on the ground. Lakṣmaṇa and Guha kept watch, and Lakṣmaṇa lamented the hardship of Rāma, Sītā, Daśaratha, and Ayodhyā. At dawn Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa assumed the dress of ascetics. Rāma consoled Sumantra, protected Daśaratha from Lakṣmaṇa’s angry words, crossed the Gaṅgā, and accepted only water. Guha and Sumantra returned overwhelmed by separation; hearing the account, Bharata fainted in grief. Rāma’s Bed beneath the Iṅgudī Tree
