Chapter context and opening material

Daśaratha revives and urgently questions Sumantra about Rāma, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa. Sumantra recounts their journey, Rāma’s respectful messages to the royal family and Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa’s angry rebuke of the king, Rāma’s defense of his father, and Sītā’s silent farewell. He describes the three entering the forest and all nature grieving after them. The report overwhelms Daśaratha and Kauśalyā, whom Sumantra then prepares to console. Daśaratha Questions Sumantra
