Daśaratha descends from Gandhamādana, continues his eastern pilgrimage, and reaches Mithilā. Janaka and Vasiṣṭha praise the divine identities of Rāma and Sītā, while Daśaratha praises Janaka's realization. Passage 1

ब्रह्मोवाच— ततः प्राप्य महात्मानं गन्धमादनपर्वतात्। श्रुत्वा श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य शैलराजेऽमलं यशः॥१॥

Brahmā said: “Having heard upon Mount Gandhamādana the stainless glory of Śrī Rāmacandra associated with the great mountain king, Daśaratha continued onward.

Passage 2

धारामलकनन्दाया रामकीर्तिसमुज्ज्वलाम्। अवगाह्य महीपालो हिमवन्तं विलोक्य च॥२॥

“The king bathed in Alakanandā's current, radiant with Rāma's fame, and beheld the Himalaya.

हिमवच्छैलदुर्गेषु कृत्वा तीर्थाटनं बुधः। तुतोष हृदयेऽत्यन्तं वसिष्ठादिपुरस्कृतः॥३॥

“With Vasiṣṭha and the other sages before him, the wise king toured the holy places in the Himalaya's mountain fastnesses and found profound joy.

Passage 4

एकाशीतिसहस्राणि तावल्लक्ष्यमितानि च। तावत्कोटिमितान्यत्र तीर्थानि हिमपर्वते॥४॥

“On that snowy mountain there were eighty-one thousand tīrthas, as many lakhs, and as many crores.

गुप्तानि च प्रकटानि क्षमायां सन्ति ब्रह्माविष्णुरुद्रात्मकानि। अन्येषां चैवामराणां गृहाणि पुण्यानि तीर्थानि जयन्ति यानि॥५॥

“Hidden and manifest across the earth are sacred places embodying Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Rudra, together with the holy abodes of the other immortals.

Passage 6

तानि सर्वाण्यरुन्धत्याः पतिना योगदृष्टिना। निर्दिष्टानि पुरो भूयः कारितानि चकार सः॥७॥

“Arundhatī's husband pointed all of them out with yogic vision, and the king repeatedly performed the prescribed observances there.

Passage 7

वर्षेषु तेषु व्रजतां मुनीनां निवहेन सः। वर्णितानीव लक्ष्म्याणि यशांसि परमात्मनः॥७॥

“As he traveled through those regions with the company of sages, he heard the auspicious glories of the Supreme Self described.

प्रियस्य सुतरूपस्य सत्यसन्धस्य सुश्रियः। रामचन्द्रस्य शुश्राव तेनासीदतिनिर्वृतः॥८॥

“He heard of his beloved, beautiful, truth-vowed Rāmacandra in the form of his own son and became deeply content.

अथ सोऽवातरच्छैलराजात्सुकृतमण्डितः। कूर्माचलपथेनैव कुर्वन् भूमिप्रदक्षिणाम्॥९॥

“Adorned by merit, he descended from the king of mountains by the route of Kūrmācala, continuing his circuit of the earth.

कौशिकीं विततस्रोतां स्नात्वा सत्पुण्यसञ्चयी। ईशानादिक्रमेणैव मोरङ्गगिरिमागमत्॥१०॥

“Gathering sacred merit, he bathed in the broad-flowing Kauśikī and traveled in the northeastern course to Mount Moraṅga.

Passage 11

नेपालेश्वरमालोक्य गुह्येशीं सम्प्रणम्य च। ततः प्रदक्षिणां कुर्वन् पुण्यां यात्रां क्रमेण सः॥११॥

“He visited the Lord of Nepal, bowed fully to Guhyeśī, and continued the holy circumambulatory pilgrimage in order.

कामरूपेश्वरं गत्वा कामाक्षीं समवातरत्। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा मायया परमात्मनः॥१२॥

“He reached the Lord of Kāmarūpa and descended to Kāmākṣī, where Brahmā and the other gods had once been overcome by the Supreme Self's māyā.

Passage 13

भग्नमानाः कृताः सर्वे तामेवाद्यां प्रतुष्टुवुः। तां नत्वा सम्प्रशस्योच्चैर्ययाचे स्वसुतोदयम्॥१२॥

“Their pride broken, all the gods had praised that primordial goddess. Daśaratha bowed to her, extolled her aloud, and prayed for his son's success.

Passage 14

इत्थं परिक्रमन् भूमिं तत्र तत्र महायजाः। इयाज सोमैर्नृपतिरन्यैश्च क्रतुभिर्भुवि॥२४॥

“Thus circling the earth, the king performed great sacrifices in place after place, including soma rites and other ceremonies.

Passage 15

वसिष्ठाद्यैर्मुनिवरैरुपदिष्टाखिलाः क्रियाः। भूपः क्रमेण पुण्यानि स्थानानि वरयोगिनाम्॥१५॥

“Vasiṣṭha and the other eminent sages instructed him in every rite as the king visited, in sequence, the holy abodes of exalted yogins.

Passage 16

पर्यटन् मिथिलां प्राप यत्र नैम्यो मनस्विराट्। जनको नाम योगीन्द्रः सोऽस्मै प्रत्युद्ययौ नृपम्॥१६॥

“Traveling onward, he reached Mithilā, where the high-minded king of Nimi's line, the great yogin named Janaka, came out to receive him.

भूयः सम्मानितं कृत्वा स्तवनाद्यैर्महीपतिः। गृहं प्रवेशयामास विद्वद्भिः परिवारितः॥१७॥

“Surrounded by learned men, Janaka honored him greatly with praises and other courtesies and led him into his home.

मुनिभिर्याज्ञवल्क्याद्यैः सर्वैर्विज्ञातवेद्यकैः। उवाच जनको भूपः प्रसाद्य रघुपुङ्गवम्। श्रीरामाख्यपरब्रह्मजनिभाग्यमहोदयम्॥१८॥

“Among sages led by Yājñavalkya, all knowers of what must be known, King Janaka honored the foremost Rāghava and addressed him concerning the immense fortune of fathering the Supreme Brahman named Śrī Rāma. Janaka and Vasiṣṭha praise Rāma and Sītā

Passage 19

जनक उवाच— धन्योऽसि कृतकृत्योऽसि रघुवंशशिखामणे। यस्य ते श्रीरामः साक्षादवतीर्णः परः पुमान्॥१९॥

Janaka said: “Blessed and fulfilled are you, crest-jewel of Raghu's line, for the Supreme Person himself has descended as your Śrī Rāma.

राजन् राममवेहि त्वं परमात्मानमद्वयम्। विश्वोपादानमतुलं बीजं परमकारणम्॥२०॥

“King, know Rāma as the nondual Supreme Self, the unequaled material ground of the universe, its seed and highest cause.

कल्याणगुणसम्पन्नं भक्तानामभयङ्करम्। यज्ज्ञात्वा न पुनः किञ्चिज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते॥२१॥

“He is filled with auspicious virtues and grants fearlessness to devotees; once he is known, nothing further remains to be known.

Passage 22

पिबंस्तस्य च वक्त्रेन्दुमाधुर्यरसमद्भुतम्। सफलं कुरु राजेन्द्र स्वं चक्षुरुदयत्स्पृहम्॥२२॥

“Drink the wondrous nectar of sweetness from his moonlike face, O king, and fulfill your eyes' rising longing.

Passage 23

वसिष्ठ उवाच— युवामेव भवे धन्यौ राजन् निमिरघूद्वहौ। ययोः प्रसन्नो भगवान् पूर्णः श्रीपुरुषोत्तमः॥२३॥

Vasiṣṭha said: “Both of you, lord of Nimi's line and lord of Raghu's line, are blessed in this world, for the complete Lord, glorious Supreme Person, is gracious to you.

Passage 24

त्वयि सा श्रीर्जन्मवती यदेकांशावलम्बनात्। त्रैलोक्येऽखिलवस्तूनि श्रीमन्त्यूर्जस्वलानि च॥२४॥

“That Goddess Śrī has taken birth from you; by resting upon but one fraction of her, all things in the three worlds possess beauty and power.

Passage 25

ब्रह्मानन्दकला पूर्णा प्रेमानन्दकलानिधिः। जानकी प्रोच्यते विद्वन् वेदैरपि विशेषतः॥२५॥

“Learned king, even the Vedas especially proclaim Jānakī as full of the essence of Brahman-bliss and the treasury of every phase of loving bliss.

Passage 26

या स्वयं परमा लक्ष्मीः श्रीः पद्मवनवासिनी। गायत्री चैव सावित्री मेधा प्रज्ञा प्रभामयी॥२६॥

“She herself is supreme Lakṣmī, Śrī dwelling in the lotus grove, and also Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, intelligence, wisdom, and radiance.

Passage 27

विद्याधीर्धारणायुक्ता चेतना ह्रीर्धृतिः स्मृतिः। तस्याः प्रभावं विज्ञातुं स्वयमीष्टे तदीश्वरः॥२७॥

“She is knowledge, insight, retention, consciousness, modesty, steadfastness, and memory; only her own Lord is capable of knowing her majesty.

Passage 28

स साक्षाद्भगवान् पूर्णः पुरुषोत्तमशब्दितः। परब्रह्मस्वरूपोऽस्य राज्ञो भूषयते गृहम्॥२८॥

“That complete Lord himself, called the Supreme Person and embodying the Supreme Brahman, now adorns this king's household.

Passage 29

अतो युवां निमिरघुवंशभूषणौ परं यशो वितनुथ आत्मनो भुवि। अगोचरं मुनिजनमानसस्य यत्तदुत्तमं युगलमवाप्तचक्षुषौ॥२९॥

“Therefore you two ornaments of Nimi's and Raghu's dynasties spread supreme fame on earth, for your eyes have attained that highest couple beyond even the minds of sages. Daśaratha praises Janaka

Passage 30

दशरथ उवाच— नाहमस्य निमिचन्द्रभूपतेः षोडशीमपि कलां समाश्रये। यस्य योगबलमेतदद्भुतं दृश्यते सुविजिताखिलेन्द्रियम्॥३०॥

Daśaratha said: “I do not approach even a sixteenth part of this moon among Nimi's kings, whose wondrous yogic strength is seen in his complete conquest of the senses.

Passage 31

अहो अयं महाराजस्तृणवत्सन्यतेऽखिलम्। राज्यं सुवर्णराशिं च विगणय्य स्थितो मुदा॥३१॥

“Ah, this great king regards everything as straw; dismissing kingdom and heaps of gold, he abides in joy.

Passage 32

नास्यानुबन्धनं राज्यं न समृद्धिः परं सुखम्। अनित्यमखिलं मत्वा योगमन्तःश्रितो ह्ययम्॥३२॥

“Neither kingship nor prosperity binds him or constitutes his highest happiness. Knowing all to be impermanent, he has taken inward refuge in yoga.

Passage 33

भगवन् मुनिशार्दूल प्राजापत्य तपोनिधे। याज्ञवल्क्यप्रसादेन विद्वानेषो भुवि भूपतिः॥३३॥

“Lord, tiger among sages and treasury of Prajāpati's austerity, by Yājñavalkya's grace this king is wise upon the earth.

Passage 34

यत्तत्त्वमेकं मुनयो वदन्ति वेदेषु शास्त्रेषु च यत्सुसिद्धम्। तदस्य हस्तामलकं परः स्फुरत्यात्मात्मनात्मात्मभिदाविमुक्तम्॥३४॥

“The one reality spoken of by sages and firmly established in Veda and śāstra shines for him as plainly as fruit in his palm, free from every division between self and Supreme Self.

Passage 35

अस्यात्मदृष्टेरिदमङ्गमङ्गं महात्मविद्यानलकीलदग्धम्। अङ्घ्रिं पुनर्धारुकुरङ्गनेत्राकराम्बुजैः शीलितपादपद्मम्॥३५॥

“Every limb of his vision of self has been burned by the flame of the great knowledge of Self, while his lotus feet are lovingly served by the lotus hands of doe-eyed women.

Passage 36

अस्यैव शिक्षां समवाप्य विद्वान् योगी शुको नाम महामुनीन्द्रः। बभूव लोके गुरुरात्मविद्याप्रवर्तको रामगुणप्रकाशकः॥३६॥

“Receiving instruction from him, the learned great sage and yogin Śuka became a teacher in the world, promulgating knowledge of the Self and revealing Rāma's virtues.

Passage 37

इत्थं परं शुश्रुम योगचर्याममुष्य वै सत्कृतलोकवृत्ताम्। नो चेन्मुनीन्द्रैरपि दुष्करं यत्तत्को नु सेवेत विषं सुधां च॥३७॥

“We have heard of his supreme yogic conduct, honored throughout the world. Were it not difficult even for the greatest sages, who would choose poison when nectar was at hand?

Passage 38

अमुं स्वदेहं विगतात्मभेदं कैवल्यशीलं समवाप्ततत्त्वम्। विशिष्यते तत्पदलिप्सयेव मुनीन्द्रवर्याः परिवार्य तस्थुः॥३८॥

“His body is free of self-division, established in liberation and possessed of truth; eminent sages surround him as though longing especially to attain his state.

Passage 39

तेषामेष ब्रह्मविदां नवानामन्तर्मोदं जनयन् वैष्णवाग्र्यः। स्वज्ञानविज्ञानविविक्तबुद्धिरासते परब्रह्मविचिन्तयानः॥३९॥

“Foremost of Vaiṣṇavas, he brings inward joy to those nine knowers of Brahman and sits contemplating the Supreme Brahman with discernment born of knowledge and realization.

Passage 40

येऽन्ये मुनीन्द्रा इह याज्ञवल्क्यमुख्या इमे तेष्वयमाप्तशासनः। तथापि पूज्यैश्चरितैः स्वकीयैस्तान् शिक्षयन्नेष विराजतीव॥४०॥

“Though Yājñavalkya and the other great sages here are his authoritative teachers, Janaka seems to shine by instructing even them through his own venerable conduct.

Passage 41

अतोऽस्य योगीन्द्रवरस्य सेवां विधाय शश्वत्कतिचिद्दिनानि। अधिक्रियेऽहं परमार्थभूतं तत्तत्त्वमावेदितुमात्मनोऽन्तः॥४१॥

“Therefore, after serving this foremost yogin for some days, I may become qualified inwardly to realize that truth which is the highest meaning.

Passage 42

ब्रह्मोवाच— इत्युक्तवति राजेन्द्रे तस्मिन् स निमिचन्द्रमाः। उवाच किमपि स्मेरवदनाम्भोजसुन्दरः॥४२॥

Brahmā said: “When the king had spoken thus, that moon of Nimi's line replied, his smiling lotus face exceedingly beautiful. Janaka's realization through loving service

Passage 43

जनक उवाच— अये नृपतिशार्दूल किमवाप्तव्यमस्ति ते। यस्य चेतो भृतं श्रीमद्रामप्रेमपरामृतैः॥४३॥

Janaka said: “Tiger among kings, what remains for you to attain when your heart is filled with the supreme nectar of love for glorious Rāma?

Passage 44

न कर्मणा नो तपसादितो वा विज्ञानतो नाप्युपासनाभिरद्धा। यत्प्राप्यते तत्पदमाप्तवानसि त्वं तत्परब्रह्म रसानुभूत्या॥४४॥

“Neither action, austerity, knowledge, nor formal worship attains that state; you have reached the Supreme Brahman through direct experience of rasa.

Passage 45

जानामि ते सुखितो गोपराजो लीलारसातन्दपदं विविच्य। आदिव्रजे प्रोक्तवान् यद्रहस्यं गिरामभिज्ञोत्तमवैदिकीनाम्॥४५॥

“I know that in primordial Vraja the cowherd king Sukhita discerned the abode of blissful līlā-rasa and told you the secret beyond even the finest Vedic speech.

Passage 46

ततोऽस्ति नानन्तपदं मनीष्वपि ब्रह्मज्ञानावापिताम्राज्यवस्तु। यत्प्रेमसिन्धौ रासलीलारसेऽस्ति शिवोऽपि यल्लब्धमना बभार तपः॥४६॥

“No infinite state or sovereign realm attained by knowledge of Brahman among the wise surpasses that ocean of love and rasa-līlā for which even Śiva, captivated, undertook austerity.

Passage 47

यदस्यासौ परमोदारलीला प्रेमामृतालङ्कृत आत्मवश्यः। श्रियः सहस्रं रमयन् नृत्यगानकौतूहली क्रीडति रामचन्द्रः॥४७॥

“In that supremely generous līlā, adorned by love's nectar and willingly subdued, Rāmacandra delights thousands of goddesses and plays, eager for dance and song.

Passage 48

तदा किं तद्गुणितानन्दमात्रं ब्रह्मत्वमाहैतदवाप्तिसाधनैः। ज्ञानादिभिस्तत्कृपयैव किञ्चिद्विदन्ति हि तत्त्वं पशुपालदारैः॥४८॥

“What then is mere Brahmanhood, only a multiplied measure of bliss, or the disciplines said to attain it? By his grace the cowherd women know something of the truth that knowledge and other means cannot reach.

Passage 49

भवान् राजन् रसिकेन्द्रलीलामाधुर्यमावात्सल्यभावमाप्तवान्। ततः किमन्यत्स्पृहयस्युदारधीर्ब्रह्माभिधं पदमेतद्विभर्ति॥४९॥

“King, through parental love you have attained the sweetness of the supreme connoisseur's līlā. What else could your noble mind desire? That sweetness itself sustains the state called Brahman.

Passage 50

सर्वानन्दपदं तस्य पदाम्बुजं सुदुर्लभम्। अवाप्य स्पृहते केन नमितानन्दकं बृहत्॥५०॥

“Having attained his exceedingly rare lotus feet, the abode of every joy, who would long for the vast but comparatively diminished bliss of Brahman?

Passage 51

मीमांसितोऽयमानन्दस्तत्त्वोपनिषदा क्वचित्। वित्ताढ्यां भुवमारभ्य ब्रह्मपर्यन्तमूर्तितः॥५०॥

“An Upaniṣad of truth once measured this scale of bliss, beginning with a wealthy human sovereign and proceeding through embodied Brahmā.

Passage 52

आनन्दानां तु सर्वेषां विश्रामो यत्र दृश्यते। रसानन्दमयाकारः पुरुषोत्तमशब्दितः॥५२॥

“He in whom every form of bliss finds rest, whose form consists of the bliss of rasa, is called the Supreme Person.

Passage 53

सा गतिः सा परा काष्ठा भक्तानां स्निग्धचेतसाम्। यस्य स्वधाम वै बृहदित्यद्धा श्रुतिरवोचत॥५३॥

“He is the destination and highest limit of tender-hearted devotees; the Veda plainly calls his own abode the Vast.

Passage 54

स्थाने तवेयं मतिरूर्जिता भो यस्यात्मजः श्रीपुरुषोत्तमः परः। स्वमायया मानुषवत्प्रतीयते बिभर्ति लीलारसमात्मनैव यः॥५४॥

“Your exalted conviction is wholly fitting, for your son is the supreme, glorious Person, who appears human through his own māyā and bears līlā-rasa within himself.

Passage 55

पाणिग्रहोत्सवे राजन् रामोऽभून्मद्गृहातिथिः। यदि तत्सेवनं त्यक्त्वा योगनिष्ठोऽभवं तदा॥५४॥

“King, during the hand-taking festival Rāma was a guest in my house, yet I abandoned his service and remained fixed in yoga.

Passage 56

तन्मायया मोहितात्मा जानंस्तं प्राकृतोपमम्। अप्रकाशितमाहात्म्यं योगमेवान्वगामहम्॥५६॥

“Deluded by his māyā, I regarded him as resembling an ordinary man; because his majesty was unrevealed, I pursued yoga alone.

Passage 57

तदा तद्योगनिष्ठायां पर्यवस्थितमात्मना। स्थिरकायं नतग्रीवं भ्रुवोर्मध्यस्थलोचनम्॥५७॥

“Then I became wholly established in yogic concentration, my body motionless, neck bent, and gaze fixed between my brows.

Passage 58

तमात्मानन्दनिरतमनुभावयितुं स्वयम्। स्वरूपी रामचन्द्रोऽभूद्गोचरो योगसंविदि॥५८॥

“To grant realization to me as I remained absorbed in inner bliss, Rāmacandra personally became visible to yogic awareness in his true form.

Passage 59

तदपश्यमहं दिव्यामयोध्यां नगरीं नृप। ब्रह्मानन्दमयीं साक्षाद्दिव्यवैकुण्ठरूपिणीम्॥५९॥

“I then beheld divine Ayodhyā, O king, directly filled with Brahman-bliss and embodying the transcendent Vaikuṇṭha.” Witness boundary note The printed witness gives this unit a formal Chapter 140 heading and Chapter 140 running heads through printed page 903. It supplies no colophon at the end of passage 59. On printed page 905 the running head changes to Chapter 141, while the passage numbering continues at 60; the eventual colophon also names Chapter 141. The reader therefore preserves Chapter 140 as the 59 independent units on source leaves 1031–1035 and begins Chapter 141 with the next witnessed unit, without duplicating or inventing text. The edition also misprints editorial passages 6, 7, 13, 14, 51, and 55 as 7, 7, 12, 24, 50, and 54 respectively. Those printed markers are retained in the Sanskrit above and registered explicitly in the corpus audit.
