Passage 1
ब्रह्मोवाच— ततश्च सा विशालाक्षी श्रीमद्रामेन्दुलिप्सया। नारदोक्तेन विधिना सिषेवे सहजेश्वरीम्॥१॥
Brahmā said: “Then Viśālākṣī, longing to attain glorious moonlike Rāma, worshiped Lady Sahajā according to the method taught by Nārada.
Passage 2
अथैनां सुप्रपन्नां सा प्रादुर्भूय पुरः स्थिता। वरेण तोषयामास यथोक्तेन वरप्रदा॥२॥
“The boon-giving goddess appeared before her devoted worshiper and delighted her with the promised blessing.
Passage 3
ततश्च भगवान् राम उवाचानुजमादरात्। गच्छ लक्ष्मण शीघ्रं त्वं शैलेन्द्रं गन्धमादनम्॥३॥
“Lord Rāma then affectionately told his younger brother, ‘Lakṣmaṇa, go quickly to Gandhamādana, king of mountains.
Passage 4
तस्मै मद्योग्यकन्यार्थं गत्वा याचस्व मद्गिरा। शिवीभूते तां विवाह्येतो गच्छावो भूरिसम्पदा॥४॥
“‘In my name ask him for the maiden who is a worthy bride for me. When the auspicious agreement is made, I shall marry her and we shall depart with abundant gifts.’

आर्यस्य वाक्यमादाय लक्ष्मणो बुद्धिमत्तरः। जगाम शैलवर्यस्य पुरं मणिपुराभिधम्॥५॥
“Wise Lakṣmaṇa accepted his elder's command and went to the great mountain's city called Maṇipura. The splendor of Maṇipura

रत्नवैदूर्यकनकप्रासादवरशोभितम्। इन्द्रनीलमणिद्योतिलसत्स्फटिकगोपुरम्॥६॥
“It shone with splendid palaces of jewels, cat's-eye, and gold, and with crystal gateways sparkling in the light of sapphires.
Passage 7
कल्पद्रुमलतोत्तुङ्गध्वजराजितमन्दिरम्। रत्नचत्वरविश्रान्तवणिग्विक्रीतमौक्तिकम्॥७॥
“Its mansions bore lofty banners among wish-fulfilling vines, and merchants resting in jeweled squares sold pearls.
Passage 8
वीप्सामिवालकापुर्या वसतिं सर्वसम्पदाम्। पर्यायमिव नाकस्य निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा॥८॥
“Fashioned by Viśvakarmā, it seemed a second Alakā, an abode of every prosperity, or another heaven itself.
Passage 9
गङ्गाप्रवाहसंशोभिपरिखामध्यभासुरम्। ज्वलद्दिव्यमहावप्रस्पर्धितार्केन्दुमण्डलम्॥९॥
“It gleamed within a moat beautiful with Gaṅgā's current, while its radiant great rampart rivaled the discs of sun and moon.
Passage 10
रत्नशालासुविश्रान्तगायद्गन्धर्वमण्डलम्। स्वर्गादपि मनोहारि सर्वदेवगणाकुलम्॥१०॥
“Companies of gandharvas rested and sang in jeweled halls; thronged with all the gods, the city was more enchanting than heaven.
Passage 11
रत्नप्रासादशिखरच्छविच्छुरितवारिदम्। प्रतिहर्म्यनदच्चारुमुरजध्वनिगर्जितम्॥११॥
“The brilliance of jeweled palace-spires colored the clouds, and lovely drums thundered from every mansion.
Passage 12
महार्हरत्नखचितं गृहभित्तिमनोरमम्। जनैः सन्दिग्धनक्षत्रप्रतिबिम्बसमुज्ज्वलम्॥१२॥
“Its delightful walls were set with precious gems whose bright reflections people mistook for stars.
Passage 13
दिव्यौषधिप्रकाशेन तमिस्रास्वपि भासुरम्। कृताक्षेपभयानर्हरत्नदीपप्रदीपितम्॥१३॥
“Even in darkness it shone with the light of divine herbs and jewel-lamps, leaving no occasion for fear.
Passage 14
नित्यं यौवनसम्पन्नदिव्यपौरजनाकुलम्। कन्दर्परतिसौन्दर्यनरनारीगणोर्जितम्॥१४॥
“It teemed with divine citizens forever endowed with youth, men and women whose beauty surpassed Kāma and Rati.
Passage 15
परमानन्दनिर्निद्रसदा जाग्रन्महाजनम्। हावभावमनोहारिदिव्यस्त्रीकुलसङ्कुलम्॥१५॥
“Its noble people, sleepless in supreme bliss, were ever awake, and its divine women enchanted the heart with every gesture and expression.
Passage 16
सन्तानकतरुच्छायाविश्रान्ततरुणाध्वगम्। नित्योत्साहसमापूर्णनित्योत्सवविवर्धितम्॥१६॥
“Young travelers rested in the shade of santānaka trees; the city was full of perpetual zest and ever-growing festivals.
Passage 17
नित्यानन्दसमूहाढ्यशृङ्गाररससेवितम्। मञ्जीरनादमधुरचलद्विद्याधराङ्गनम्॥१७॥
“Rich in unending floods of joy and devoted to the rasa of love, it was sweet with the anklet-music of moving vidyādhara women.
Passage 18
नृत्यगीतसमासक्तक्रीडत्पौरजनाकुलम्। क्रीडन्नवनिधिस्तोमसम्मर्दरुचिरापणम्॥१८॥
“Citizens absorbed in dance and song filled its playgrounds, while its lovely markets seemed crowded with the nine treasures at play.
Passage 19
सरसीशतसंफुल्लस्वर्णरत्नसरोरुहम्। गृहारामसदादीव्यत्प्रसन्नकुसुमाकरम्॥१९॥
“Hundreds of lakes blossomed with golden, jeweled lotuses, and the gardens of its homes were always bright with cheerful flowers.
Passage 20
तत्र गत्वा स शैलस्य मन्दिराभिमुखो ययौ। समस्तपौरलोकानां हृदयानि हरन् भृशम्॥२०॥
“Arriving there, Lakṣmaṇa went toward the mountain king's palace and utterly stole the hearts of all the citizens.
Passage 21
तं कोटिमन्मथललामकिशोरवेशं नव्येन्द्रनीलमणिमञ्जुलकोमलाङ्गम्। आजानुविस्तृतभुजं वृषपीवरांसं विस्तीर्णवक्षसमुदारमनोज्ञहासम्॥२१॥
“He was a youth who crowned the beauty of millions of Cupids, his tender body lovely as a fresh sapphire, his arms extending to his knees, his shoulders powerful, his chest broad, and his noble smile captivating.
Passage 22
माधुर्यसागरमनन्तरसं रमेन्दोर्रामाधिकाममभिरामलसन्मुखेन्दुम्। प्रातःसमुल्लसितनव्यसरोजनेत्रं सौमित्रिमीक्ष्य मुमुदुर्नयनानि नृणाम्॥२२॥
“Seeing Sumitrā's son—a shoreless ocean of sweetness, his moonlike face lovely beyond even Rāma's beauty and his eyes fresh morning lotuses—the people's own eyes rejoiced.
Passage 23
तमायान्तमभिप्रेत्य गन्धमादनपर्वतः। अभ्यागत्य बहिर्गेहादग्रहीद्धस्तमादरम्॥२३॥
“Learning that Lakṣmaṇa was approaching, Mount Gandhamādana came outside his home and respectfully took his hand.
Passage 24
प्रवेशितस्तेन सरत्नसौधे महार्हसिंहासनमास्थितोऽभूत्। पाद्यादिसर्वार्चनसंविधानान्ते सन्दिष्टमार्येण जगाद वाक्यम्॥२४॥
“Led into the jeweled palace, Lakṣmaṇa sat upon a precious throne. After the full worship beginning with water for his feet, he delivered his elder's message.
Passage 25
लक्ष्मण उवाच— श्रूयते भवतः कन्या रत्नभूता जगत्त्रये। तामार्यो याचते प्रीत्या कुरुतस्त्वं यथोचितम्॥२५॥
Lakṣmaṇa said: “Your daughter is renowned as a jewel of the three worlds. My elder lovingly asks for her; please do what is fitting.
Passage 26
श्रुत्वा शैलपतिर्वाक्यं लक्ष्मणस्य महात्मनः। मुमुदेऽतीव हृदये यथोचितवराप्तितः॥२६॥
“Hearing great Lakṣmaṇa's words, the mountain king rejoiced exceedingly at gaining a perfectly worthy groom.
Passage 27
गन्धमादन उवाच— अहो मे महती भाग्यसम्पद्विजयतेतराम्। यत्साक्षाद्भगवान् रामो मम जामाता भविष्यति॥२७॥
Gandhamādana said: “Ah, the wealth of my good fortune now triumphs supremely, for Lord Rāma himself will become my son-in-law!
Passage 28
जानाम्यहं युवां भूमौ नव्येन्दीवरसुन्दरौ। भ्रातरौ देवकार्यार्थमवतीर्णौ नरोत्तमौ॥२८॥
“I know that you two brothers, beautiful as fresh blue lotuses and best of men, have descended to earth for the gods' purpose.
Passage 29
पुराणपुरुषौ साक्षात्प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरौ। भवांस्तदक्षरं ब्रह्म रामः श्रीपुरुषोत्तमः॥२९॥
“You are directly the primordial Persons, lords of primal matter and the individual soul: you are the imperishable Brahman, and Rāma is the glorious Supreme Person.
Passage 30
एकमेव परं ब्रह्म रामो लोके प्रकाशते। अनन्तकालरूपस्त्वं शेषः सङ्कर्षणोऽव्ययः॥३०॥
“Rāma shines in the world as the one supreme Brahman, while you are imperishable Śeṣa-Saṅkarṣaṇa, whose form is endless Time.
Passage 31
रामचन्द्रः परं धाम परात्परमुदाहृतम्। यद्ब्रह्म पूर्णगुणकं परमानन्दमन्दिरम्॥३१॥
“Rāmacandra is declared to be the supreme abode beyond the highest—the Brahman full of every virtue and the dwelling of supreme bliss.
Passage 32
स मां जामातृरूपेण तोषयिष्यति राघवः। अहो मे परमं भाग्यं लोके गास्यन्ति मानवाः॥३२॥
“That Rāghava will delight me in the form of a son-in-law. People throughout the world will sing of my supreme good fortune.
Passage 33
यद्भाग्यं सरितां पत्युर्यद्भाग्यं जनकस्य च। तदेव भाग्यमतुलं ममापि खलु दृश्यते॥३३॥
“The incomparable fortune once gained by the ocean, lord of rivers, and by Janaka is now plainly seen in me as well.
Passage 34
ब्रह्मोवाच— ततः स रत्नगर्भाख्यां पत्नीमाहूय पर्वतः। उवाच ननु ते पुत्र्या विवाहः समुपस्थितः॥३४॥
Brahmā said: “The mountain then summoned his wife Ratnagarbhā and said, ‘The time for your daughter's marriage has arrived.
Passage 35
यः स्वयं भगवान् पूर्णः परो रामः स्वयं हरिः। सोऽपि दाशरथे गेहे जामाता ते भविष्यति॥३५॥
“‘He who is the complete Lord himself, supreme Rāma, Hari himself, will become your son-in-law in Daśaratha's household.
Passage 36
पुरन्ध्रीवर्गमाहूय सुमुहूर्ते शुभे दिने। कन्यारत्नमिदं योग्यं रामाय प्रतिपाद्यताम्॥३६॥
“‘Summon the married women, and on an auspicious day and at a favorable hour let this jewel among maidens be given to worthy Rāma.’
Passage 37
रत्नगर्भोवाच— जनकस्य सुता तस्य भूपतेः प्रथमा वधूः। सैवास्य पट्टमहिषी भविष्यति न संशयः॥३७॥
Ratnagarbhā said: “King Janaka's daughter is his first bride, and without doubt she will be his crowned chief queen.
Passage 38
मत्सुतां सुकुमाराङ्गीं रूपेणाप्रतिमां भुवि। निषेदुषीमधस्तस्याः कथं सोढुमहं क्षमे॥३८॥
“How could I bear to see my tender-limbed daughter, unrivaled in beauty on earth, seated beneath her?
Passage 39
अतो निवेद्यतामेष जामाता भवता प्रभो। यथोत्कर्षो न भज्येत मत्सुतायाः शशिश्रियः॥३९॥
“Therefore, lord, explain this to our prospective son-in-law so that the preeminence of my moon-beautiful daughter is not diminished.
Passage 40
इत्युक्त्वा शैलराजं सा पुरन्ध्रीवर्गमाह्वयत्। कर्तुं वैवाहिकीं सर्वां संविधां शुभवासरे॥४०॥
“After saying this to the mountain king, she called the married women to make every wedding arrangement on the auspicious day.
Passage 41
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य लक्ष्मणं विससर्ज वै। स आगत्येप्सितं कार्यं सिद्धमार्ये व्यजिज्ञपत्॥४१॥
“Promising, ‘So be it,’ Gandhamādana dismissed Lakṣmaṇa, who returned and told his elder that the desired purpose had been accomplished. The bride is adorned

अथ वैवाहिके लग्ने चन्द्रवृद्धिसमन्विते। तिथौ जामित्रयुक्तायां सबन्धुर्गन्धमादनः॥४२॥
“When the wedding ascendant arrived on a waxing-moon date blessed by a favorable seventh house, Gandhamādana assembled with his relatives.
Passage 43
वैवाहिकीं शुभां दीक्षां चकार मुदिताशयः। सर्वतो भूषितं पार्श्वमुभो तस्य पुरं नवम्॥४३॥
“Joyful at heart, he undertook the auspicious wedding observance, and both sides of his new city were adorned throughout.
Passage 44
द्रक्ष्यामोऽद्य स्वयं रामं भाग्यं नरचक्षुषामिति। पौराणां हृदये भूयस्युत्कण्ठा समवर्धत॥४४॥
“‘Today we shall see Rāma himself, the good fortune of human eyes!’ Thus an immense longing grew in the citizens' hearts.
Passage 45
अथोत्तराफाल्गुनीषु चन्द्रयुक्तासु तद्दिने। मैत्रे मुहूर्ते सुभगा भूषयन्ति स्म कन्यकाम्॥४५॥
“That day, when the moon joined Uttaraphālgunī and the auspicious Mitra hour arrived, the fortunate women adorned the maiden.
Passage 46
मङ्गलाभ्यङ्गमातेनुस्तस्याः सुभगयोषितः। लोध्रकल्केन तत्प्रोञ्छ्य कालेयोद्वर्तनं दधुः॥४६॥
“The fortunate women gave her the ceremonial oil bath, wiped her with lodhra paste, and applied a fragrant dark unguent.
Passage 47
मणिवैदूर्यमुक्ताभिर्निर्मिते चारुचित्रिते। चतुष्के तां समारोप्य स्नापयामासुरङ्गनाः॥४७॥
“The women seated her upon a beautifully patterned platform made of gems, cat's-eye stones, and pearls, and bathed her.
Passage 48
ततः सुवर्णकुम्भस्थजलैस्तूर्यपुरःसरम्। स्नानं कृत्वा विशुद्धाङ्गी पटं परिदधौ नवम्॥४८॥
“With instruments sounding, she bathed in water from golden vessels; her body purified, she put on a new silk garment.
Passage 49
मणिस्तम्भचतुष्केण शोभमाने वितानिनि। विहिते वेदिमध्ये तां निन्युर्दिव्यासनान्विते॥४९॥
“They led her to a divine seat in the center of a canopied pavilion that shone with four jeweled pillars.
Passage 50
धूपितागुरुधूपेन तस्याश्चिकुरधोरणी। दूर्वामधूकदाम्नोच्चैर्बद्धा सुभगया ततः॥५०॥
“Her flowing hair was perfumed with aloe incense, then a fortunate woman tied it high with a garland of dūrvā grass and madhūka flowers.
Passage 51
विलिप्य शुक्लागरुणा तदङ्गं सुभगाः स्त्रियः। गोरोचनापत्रभक्त्या चित्रितं समचीकरन्॥५१॥
“The women anointed her body with white aloe and made it beautiful with leaf-patterns drawn in yellow pigment.
Passage 52
सुवर्णवर्णसुदृशैः कर्णार्पितयवाङ्कुरैः। विलम्बितालकौ तस्याः कपोलौ परिरेजतुः॥५२॥
“Her cheeks shone between hanging curls and barley shoots, lovely as gold, placed upon her ears.
Passage 53
स्वाभाविकरुचा रक्तौ तस्याः कमलकोमलौ। चरणौ रञ्जितौ स्त्रीभिर्यावकेन विशेषतः॥५३॥
“Her lotus-soft feet, naturally rosy, were made still more red by the women's application of lac.
Passage 54
इन्दीवरदलाकारे नवखञ्जनमञ्जुले। कालाञ्जनेन नयने रञ्जनं समवापतुः॥५४॥
“Her eyes, shaped like blue-lotus petals and lovely as young wagtails, gained new beauty from black collyrium.
Passage 55
सुवर्णमणिभूषाभिः प्रत्यङ्गं सा विभूषिता। विरेजे नववल्लीव वसन्तागमपुष्पिता॥५५॥
“Adorned on every limb with ornaments of gold and gems, she shone like a young vine flowering at spring's arrival.
Passage 56
सर्वाङ्गभूषितामेतामादर्शफलकं स्त्रियः। दर्शयामासुरानन्दभरमञ्जुस्मिताननाम्॥५६॥
“The women showed a mirror to the fully adorned maiden, whose face bore a lovely smile overflowing with joy.
Passage 57
यापत्यरत्नजननाद्भुवि रत्नगर्भा सा गन्धमादनवधूः कमताभिधाना। तद्भालमाद्रहरितालमनःशिलाभ्यां चक्रे विवाहतिलकान्वितमञ्जुलाभ्याम्॥५७॥
“Gandhamādana's wife Kamatā, called Ratnagarbhā on earth because she bore this jewel of a child, marked her daughter's forehead with a lovely wedding tilaka of moist orpiment and realgar.
Passage 58
बबन्धोर्णामयं सूत्रं प्रेमवाष्पाकुलेक्षणः। वैवाहिकीं शुभां दीक्षां सूचयामास तत्करे॥५८॥
“Her father, his eyes filled with tears of love, tied a woolen thread on her hand to signify the auspicious wedding vow.
Passage 59
सा विरेजेतरां बाला नवीनक्षौमवासिनी। चन्द्रिकोच्छ्रायविपुला कलेव सितरोचिषः॥५९॥
“The maiden in fresh linen shone still more brightly, like a waxing digit of the white-rayed moon.
Passage 60
प्रणमय्य ततो माता पूजिताः कुलदेवताः। प्रणामं कारयामास साध्वीनां कुलयोषिताम्॥६०॥
“Her mother had her bow to the worshiped family deities and then to the virtuous women of the household.
Passage 61
शिवस्य गिरिजेव त्वमेहि सौभाग्यमूर्जितम्। रामस्येति सतीलोकाः प्रायुङ्क्तः परमाशिषः॥६१॥
“‘Come to the highest marital blessedness with Rāma, as Girijā did with Śiva!’ Thus the virtuous women bestowed their supreme blessings. Rāma's wedding procession

सुहृद्बन्धुसमाजस्थस्तत्पिता गन्धमादनः। वैवाहिकेऽखिले कृत्ये सज्जः स ब्राह्मणैः सह॥६२॥
“Her father Gandhamādana stood among friends and relatives, ready with the brāhmaṇas for every wedding rite.
Passage 63
आस प्रतीक्षमाणोऽथ रामचन्द्रवरागमम्। तावत्सोऽपि स्ववधूभिर्भूषितः कुञ्जमण्डपे॥६३॥
“He waited for the bridegroom Rāmacandra to arrive. Meanwhile Rāma's own ladies adorned him in a bower pavilion.
Passage 64
सातकुम्भमयैः कुम्भैः स्वर्गङ्गाजलसम्भृतैः। स्नापितो देवकन्याभिः पुत्रो दशरथस्य सः॥६४॥
“The daughters of the gods bathed Daśaratha's son with golden pitchers filled with the water of heaven's Gaṅgā.
Passage 65
दध्यौ कर्पूरकस्तूरीकुङ्कुमागुरुनिर्मितम्। अङ्गरागं शुभं रामो विवाहोत्सवदीक्षितः॥६५॥
“Consecrated for the wedding festival, Rāma applied an auspicious body fragrance made of camphor, musk, saffron, and aloe.
Passage 66
नवाम्रमञ्जरीपत्रपारिजातप्रसूनकैः। शुशुभे शेखरे बिभ्रद्वसन्त इव मूर्तिमान्॥६६॥
“Bearing fresh mango blossoms, leaves, and pārijāta flowers in his crest, he shone like spring embodied.
Passage 67
भाले गोरोचनापत्रं दधार रसिकोत्तमः। वहन्नुदयकालीनमष्टमीशशिनं घनः॥६७॥
“The supreme connoisseur wore a yellow leaf-design upon his brow, like a cloud bearing the eighth-day moon at its rising.
Passage 68
तिलकं हरितालस्य रेजे तद्भालमण्डले। रोहिणीवाङ्कमारूढा विलसत्यष्टमी विधोः॥६८॥
“The orpiment tilaka gleamed upon his forehead like Rohiṇī resting upon the disc of the eighth-day moon.
Passage 69
सुवर्णमणिमाणिक्यभूषणैर्भूषिताम्बरः। प्रसन्नतारकाजालं कलयन्निव तोयदः॥६९॥
“His garments adorned with ornaments of gold, gems, and rubies, he resembled a raincloud displaying a bright host of stars.
Passage 70
सौवर्णसूत्रघटितमुष्णीषं शिरसा दधत्। विरेजे छुरितं विष्वक्चूडामणिमरीचिभिः॥७०॥
“He wore a turban woven with golden thread, radiant everywhere with rays from its crest jewel.
Passage 71
सकञ्चुकं वहन्नव्यं सुवर्णगुणनिर्मितम्। रेजे तडिद्वितानेन विलिप्त इव वारिदः॥७१॥
“Wearing a new jacket made with golden strands, he shone like a cloud covered by a canopy of lightning.
Passage 72
कटिबन्धं दधद्रामो निस्त्रिंशेन समन्वितम्। वीरो मूर्त इव भ्राजदुत्साहःस्थायिसङ्गतः॥७२॥
“With his girdle and sword, heroic Rāma blazed like courage embodied and joined to its enduring mood of energy.
Passage 73
जानकीहृदयानन्दं सहजाचित्तमोहनम्। भ्रात्रोपनीते मुकुरे स्वमात्मानं ददर्श सः॥७३॥
“In the mirror brought by his brother, he saw himself—the joy of Jānakī's heart and enchanter of Sahajā's mind.
Passage 74
“सुभगे शिर आरोह शोभयन्ती मुखं मम।” इति मन्त्रेण मुकुटं दधौ वैवाहिकं वरः॥७४॥
“With the mantra, ‘Fortunate crown, mount my head and beautify my face,’ the bridegroom put on his wedding diadem.
Passage 75
वाचयित्वा सुपुण्याहं वसिष्ठाद्यैर्मुनीश्वरैः। नीराजितः स्ववधूभिर्जयघोषपुरःसरम्॥७५॥
“After Vasiṣṭha and the other great sages proclaimed the holy day, his ladies waved lights before him amid cries of victory.
Passage 76
स उच्चैःश्रवसं नाम वासवेन समर्पितम्। अश्ववर्यं समारुह्य प्रतस्थौ श्वशुरालयम्॥७६॥
“He mounted the excellent horse named Uccaiḥśravas, presented by Indra, and departed for his father-in-law's home.
Passage 77
तमनुप्रस्थितो वीरः सौमित्रिः शुभदर्शनः। मनोभवमिव प्रेम्णा प्रहृष्यन् कुसुमाकरः॥७७॥
“Handsome, heroic Lakṣmaṇa followed him, rejoicing with love like spring following the god of love.
Passage 78
तमनु प्रस्थिता देवा विधिशक्रशिवादयः। ऋषयश्च वसिष्ठाद्या जयमन्त्रयुताः पुरः॥७८॥
“The gods, beginning with Brahmā, Indra, and Śiva, followed, while Vasiṣṭha and the other sages went before them reciting victorious mantras.
Passage 79
गीर्वाणवनिताश्चानु प्रस्थिताः शुभगीतिभिः। कालोचितं प्रगायन्त्यो देवकन्यागणैः सह॥७९॥
“The women of heaven followed with companies of divine maidens, singing auspicious songs suited to the occasion.
Passage 80
चक्रुरप्सरसो नृत्यमुर्वशीप्रमुखाः पथि। जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयः सताललयमूर्छनाः॥८०॥
“Apsarases led by Urvaśī danced along the road, while gandharva chiefs sang with rhythm, tempo, and melodic modulation.

“A mighty and supremely auspicious tumult of instruments filled the road, as mountain caves roar with the sound of rainclouds.

“The auspicious music traveling through the aerial paths summoned heaven's citizens to see the blessed wedding.

तस्यातपत्रं जगृहे भगवान् पद्मबान्धवः। उच्चैः शुशोभ शीर्षस्थमुक्तादामविलम्बि तत्॥८५॥
“The divine sun, friend of the lotus, held Rāma's parasol; high above his head it shone with hanging strings of pearls.

पार्श्वयोर्गङ्गयमुने सिषेवाते रघूद्वहम्। चामरग्राहिणीभूय हित्वा नद्यात्मकं वपुः॥८६॥
“Gaṅgā and Yamunā abandoned their river forms, became fly-whisk bearers, and served the foremost Rāghava at his two sides.

“Brahmā and Lord Viṣṇu walked slowly beside him, deepening the supreme joy with their grave cry of ‘Victory!’

“At the favorable hour he reached the mountain's city Maṇipura, watched with boundless reverence by citizens gathered at its outskirts.

प्रत्युज्जगाम तं शैलः सुहृद्भिर्बन्धुभिः सह। गजाश्वरथपादातैः पथि सम्मर्दयन् बलैः॥८९॥
“The mountain came out to meet him with friends and relatives, his forces of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry crowding the road.

स वेदितो जगद्धर्ता जामात्रा हृदि लज्जितः। आराधितः पुरा येन स दूरात्सहजापतिः॥९०॥
“When he recognized in his son-in-law the sustainer of the universe whom he had formerly worshiped, the father of Sahajā felt shy at heart even from afar.

“When the city's beauties saw the bridegroom's form, their births became blessed and their wide eyes fulfilled.

काचिदालोकमार्गेण द्रष्टुं रामं समागता। उद्वेष्टनगलन्माल्यान् बद्धुं केशांश्च नाशकत्॥९३॥
“One woman hurried to a window to see Rāma and could not retie her loosened hair as its garlands fell away.

काचित्प्रसाधिकाहस्तादाक्षिप्यैवाङ्घ्रिरञ्जितम्। पादं गलद्रसं भूमावङ्कयामास तत्क्षणे॥९४॥
“Another snatched her half-painted foot from her attendant's hand and at once marked the floor with its dripping dye.

“One woman reached the window holding the applicator, one eye darkened with collyrium and the other still bare.

“Another young mother abandoned her nursing child and ran to see Rāma, her flowing breasts sprinkling the path.

तासां मुखसहस्रेण कान्तिमण्डलशालिना। गवाक्षाः परितो रेजुः सेन्दुबिम्बा इव स्फुटम्॥९८॥
“Illuminated by their thousand radiant faces, the windows all around plainly looked as though each held a moon.

“Rāma beheld the city: countless banners covered it, arches spanned its gateways, and every step was auspicious.

“‘It was fitting that Śrī Viśālā performed such great and constant worship of the deity to gain him. Service even at his lotus feet is hard to attain—what, then, of resting upon the lap of him who rivals flower-bowed Kāma?’

युगमिदमनुरूपं रूपलावण्यकान्ति- प्रभृतिगुणसमूहैश्चेत्स नायोजयिष्यत्। तदखिलकमनीयां सर्वलोकोत्तरां च श्रियमनुपमरूपां किं विधाता व्यधास्यत्॥१०३॥
“‘If the Creator had not joined this perfectly matched pair in beauty, grace, radiance, and every other virtue, why would he have fashioned this incomparable goddess, lovelier than all and beyond every world?’

ननु लवणिमसिन्धोरस्य रूपेण कामः परिभवमुदवाप्य स्वान्तसङ्क्रान्तलज्जः। त्रिनयननयनाग्नौ स्वं वपुः सञ्जुहाव क्व नु खलु भुवनेऽस्मिन् जीवनं मानहानौ॥१०४॥
“‘Surely Kāma, defeated by the beauty of this ocean of loveliness and overcome by inward shame, offered his own body into the three-eyed Lord's ocular fire. What life is there in this world after honor has been lost?’

गिरिपरिवृढ एष प्राप्य सम्बन्धमेनं सकलभुवनमध्ये लप्स्यति कीर्तिमग्र्याम्। धरणिधरणकार्या दर्पणं स्वस्य पुत्र्याः पुरुषगणवरेऽस्मिन् प्राप्स्यतीज्यां प्रतिष्ठाम्॥१०५॥
“‘By gaining this alliance, the mighty mountain will attain foremost fame in all the worlds, while his earth-supporting daughter will find an honored place in this best of men, a mirror of her own excellence.’

“The gods, who knew the truth, recognized her as Lakṣmī, mother of the world, and bestowed blessings for unbroken marital happiness.

“Then Mahālakṣmī herself came beside Rāmacandra and served the auspicious couple while holding a lotus parasol.

“We have heard that, as Ratnagarbhā and Mount Gandhamādana proceeded, Rāma revealed to them the true forms of the divine couple.

“The mountain saw the forest called Pramoda—the imperishable realm inaccessible even to knowers of Brahman, intimated in many ways by Vedānta, and entered only by those who possess love for the couple.

चिन्तामणिमयी भूमिः कल्पवृक्षलतावृता। तन्मध्ये मन्दिरं दिव्यं सहस्रस्तम्भशोभितम्॥१४१॥
“Its ground was made of wish-fulfilling gems and covered by vines of wish-fulfilling trees; at its center stood a divine mansion radiant with a thousand pillars.

“His conch-shaped neck and broad chest captivated the heart. Every divine weapon attended him in obedience to his command, and hosts of perfections beginning with aṇimā served him, the deity of all.

“After the divine mountain couple duly praised them, Gandhamādana sent the newlyweds onward to the supreme city called Ayodhyā.

“Deeply pleased, Rāma granted them supreme devotion and ordained that in the coming age called Tretā the mountain would be known as Saugandhika.

ततस्तौ स्यन्दनं दिव्यमास्थितौ त्रिजगत्पती। विशालारामरमणौ स्वामयोध्यां प्रतस्थतुः॥१५७॥
“Then the two lords of the three worlds, Viśālā and her beloved Rāma, mounted a divine chariot and departed for their own Ayodhyā.

“Even today, upon Gandhamādana, this Rāma, master of love-play, is sometimes seen delighting with Śrī Viśālākṣī.

“Thus we have heard this supreme glory from yogins who know the ancient lore; in it Rāma's submission to his devotees is made manifest.

“The great mountain's wife Kamatā, known as Ratnagarbhā, was exceptionally tender toward her daughter Viśālā.

यदा प्रस्थातुमारेभे राम उद्वाह्य तां रमाम्। तदा भृशं वियोगार्ता रुरोद विपुलाश्रुभृत्॥१६१॥
“When Rāma prepared to depart after marrying that goddess, Ratnagarbhā, tormented by separation, wept profuse tears.

तदा तयो रत्नगर्भागन्धमादनशैलयोः। प्रेम्णा निबद्धहृदयो रामस्तत्रैव तस्थिवान्॥१६२॥
“Rāma's heart was bound by love for Ratnagarbhā and Mount Gandhamādana, so he remained present there.

“King Daśaratha thus heard this luminous glory being sung by the finest gods upon Mount Gandhamādana.

“The best of kings visited the mountain's great tīrthas and bathed there; seeing and touching the auspicious stream of the threefold Gaṅgā, he found deep contentment.

आगतं निजजामातुः पितरं गन्धमादनः। निशम्य प्रश्रयन्नन्तःपुरः प्रत्युद्ययौ गिरिः॥१६६॥
“Learning that the father of his son-in-law had arrived, Gandhamādana humbly came out from his inner palace to welcome him.

Source control note Chapter 139 occupies registered source leaves 1018–1031 of the 1975 Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 1019–1032). Its heading begins below the Chapter 138 colophon on physical page 1019; its own colophon and Chapter 140's opening occur on physical page 1032. Both OCR witnesses and all fourteen scan pages confirm a continuous printed passage sequence from 1 through 169, with no lacuna or duplicate-number anomaly. The complete Sanskrit was collated against the scan, and the English is a fresh direct translation of that scan-controlled text.
