The Holī Rescue and the Transmission of Rāma’s Secret Līlā

Global chapter 136 of 514111 passagesSource PDF pages 977985
Chapter context and opening material

During Holī in Pramoda forest, the yakṣa Māṇikyatilaka attempts to abduct the cowherd women. Rāma pursues and kills him, gives his brilliant jewel to Lakṣmaṇa, and establishes the purifying Yakṣapramocana lake. Sukhita then recalls the anguish that seized Vraja when Daśaratha’s army arrived to take Rāma away. Asked how Sukhita and Sukaṇṭha can narrate such hidden events, Sukhita recounts Sarasvatī’s worship of Rāma. Rāma authorizes her to hear the secret līlā from the two cowherds and establishes the transmission through Brahmā, Bhuśuṇḍa, Dālbhya, and Lomaśa. The chapter closes by relating the familiar forest and Laṅkā narrative to Rāma’s eternal Pramoda-forest play. Holī in Pramoda forest
