Passage 1
सुखित उवाच— गोकुले सर्वतः सौख्यैः प्लाव्यमानेऽतिशोभने। रामस्य चरणाम्भोजप्रसादात् कुशलान्विते॥१॥
Sukhita said: “The exceedingly beautiful cowherd settlement was flooded on every side with happiness and well-being through the grace of Rāma’s lotus feet.
Passage 2
गृहे गृहे नरा नार्यो नानाकौतुकसंयुताः। गायन्ति क्रीडया युक्ताः खेलन्ति च रमन्ति च॥२॥
“In every house, men and women joined in many festivities. They sang, played, and delighted in joyful pastimes.
Passage 3
हसन्ति सुखसन्दोहैर्हासयन्ति परस्परम्। स्थले स्थले शुभैर्वाक्यैर्विश्वङ्मुखरिता दिशः॥३॥
“Overflowing with happiness, they laughed and made one another laugh; at every place their auspicious words resounded through all directions.
Passage 4
गोप्यो रामप्रेमवर्याः सदनुग्रहपूरिताः। पश्यन्त्यो रूपमाधुर्यं मोदन्ते व्रजवीथिषु॥४॥
“The cowherd women, foremost in love for Rāma and filled with his constant grace, rejoiced in Vraja’s lanes while beholding the sweetness of his form.
Passage 5
गोपवृद्धाश्च मुदिता रामदर्शनमात्रतः। पूर्णाभिलाषाः सर्वेऽपि गायन्ति विमलान् गुणान्॥५॥
“The elder cowherds were gladdened merely by seeing Rāma. Every desire fulfilled, they sang his stainless virtues.
Passage 6
सखायो रामचन्द्रस्य भाग्यभाजनतां गताः। परमानन्दमुदिताः स्तुवन्ति च परस्परम्॥६॥
“Rāmacandra’s companions had become vessels of good fortune. Rejoicing in supreme bliss, they praised him among themselves.
Passage 7
एवमादिव्रजे सर्वे शोभासम्पत्समन्विते। अगादसहमानोऽसावसुरो वृषभाकृतिः॥७॥
“While primordial Vraja was thus endowed with every splendor, a jealous demon in the form of a bull entered it.
Passage 8
पीठाकरः परुषनाद उदग्रशृङ्गः कीलाकरालनयनो भयकृज्जनानाम्। क्रूरप्रचारखुरविक्षतभूमिभागः कल्माषकायविजिताञ्जनघटाकलापः॥८॥
His back was massive, his bellow harsh, and his horns thrust high. His eyes were cruel as spikes and terrified the people; his roaming hooves tore the earth, and his mottled body surpassed banks of dark storm clouds.
Passage 9
पापीयसो मतिविश्वदशोत्कर्षणशृङ्गभृत्। पुच्छाग्रभ्रामणोद्घातघातितोडुकदम्बकः॥९॥
Wicked in mind, he bore horns capable of ripping apart the quarters, while the blows from his whirling tail seemed to strike down clusters of stars.
Passage 10
ककुद्मान् विकरालाङ्गः शब्दापूरितदिङ्मुखः। अगादादिव्रजं शब्दैर्भीषयन् भङ्गुरेक्षणः॥१०॥
Hump-backed and monstrous-limbed, he filled the directions with sound and entered primordial Vraja, terrifying it with his cries and baleful gaze.
Passage 11
गोष्ठानि तेन शृङ्गाभ्यां विभिन्नानि समन्ततः। विहाय गावो गोपालाः सर्व एव पलायिताः॥११॥
With his horns he tore apart the cattle enclosures on every side. Abandoning them, the cows and cowherds all fled.
Passage 12
रम्भणैस्तस्य भयदैर्गावो वृषा नराः। कुर्वन्ति स्म सकृन्मूत्रं समीपं तस्य को व्रजेत्॥१२॥
His dreadful bellows made cows, bulls, and men void themselves at once. Who could dare approach him?
Passage 13
गर्भिणीनां स्रवेद्गर्भो यस्य निर्घोषशब्दतः। खुरोद्धतधूलिभरैर्नभश्चैवान्धकारितम्॥१३॥
The thunder of his voice caused pregnant creatures to miscarry, and clouds of dust raised by his hooves darkened the sky.
Passage 14
तं वज्रकठिनोत्तुङ्गविषाणोत्पाटिताम्बरम्। वीक्ष्य बिभ्यद्व्रजे लोका गोपा गोप्यो गवां गणाः॥१४॥
Seeing him tear at the sky with lofty horns hard as thunderbolts, Vraja’s people, cowherd men and women, and herds of cattle trembled.
Passage 15
त्रायस्वास्मान् राम रामेति सर्वे शब्दं चक्रुस्तेजसा तस्य पूर्वम्। वित्रस्तात्मानस्ततो रामचन्द्रः कृत्वा तेषामभयं पर्यतिष्ठत्॥१५॥
Terrified by the demon’s power, everyone cried, “Save us, Rāma! Rāma!” Rāmacandra reassured them and stood ready before them. Rāma kills the bull demon
Passage 16
पीताम्बरेण विनिबध्य कटिं स वीर आस्फोटयंस्तलरवेण भुजौ नितान्तम्। पार्श्वस्थगर्जदनुजांसधृतैकबाहु- रन्येन बाहुविटपेन तमाजुहाव॥१६॥
The hero bound his waist with his yellow cloth and slapped his mighty arms with a sharp report. Resting one arm upon his roaring younger brother’s shoulder, he challenged the demon with the branchlike other arm.
Passage 17
सङ्क्षुब्धधीस्तद्भुजास्फोटशब्दैः सुकर्कशैराहतकर्ण आरात्। सञ्जातरोषस्तपनारुणाक्षः क्रुद्धः समुद्धृत्य विनम्य च शिरः॥१७॥
The harsh sound of Rāma’s arm-slapping struck the bull’s ears and disturbed his mind. Anger arose; his eyes reddened like the sun as he lowered and then raised his head.
Passage 18
रामस्याभिमुखोऽभ्येत्य क्रूररावी महासुरः। शृङ्गाभ्यां तं समुद्वर्तयितुमैच्छत् सुकठिनाशयः॥१८॥
The great demon came straight toward Rāma with a savage roar, intending in his hard heart to toss him upward upon his horns.
Passage 19
स तं जग्राह पाणिभ्यां शृङ्गयोरतिदारुणम्। व्यनुदत् प्रातिलोम्येन धनुर्विंशतिकोपरि॥१९॥
Rāma seized the terrible creature by both horns and drove him backward for a distance of twenty bow-lengths.
Passage 20
स तत्र न्यपतद्भूमौ रामबाहुबलेरितः। कम्पमानश्च सर्वाङ्गं स्वेदतोयेन पूरितः॥२०॥
Hurled by the strength of Rāma’s arms, he fell to the earth, his whole body trembling and drenched in sweat.
Passage 21
पुनरुत्थाय वेगेन निःश्वसन्नतिरोषणः। उल्कावलीढनयनस्तिर्यक्क्रूरं विलोकयन्॥२१॥
He rose again in fury, breathing violently and glaring sideways, his eyes licked by fiery meteors.
Passage 22
मुञ्चन्नसृगपाङ्गाभ्यां क्रोधतामसमानसः। पुच्छमुद्यम्य सहसा भूयोऽभिमुखमापतत्॥२२॥
Blood flowed from the corners of his eyes; his mind darkened by rage. Raising his tail, he suddenly charged once more.
Passage 23
तं सन्निगृह्य बलवान् सविषाणयुग्मं सम्भ्राम्य दिक्षु धरणौ विनिपात्य धीमान्। आक्रम्य चाशु चरणेन गलेऽथ शृङ्गे प्रोत्पाट्य तेन मुररोषवशाज्जघान॥२३॥
Powerful Rāma caught him with both horns, whirled him through the directions, and dashed him to the ground. The wise Lord stepped quickly upon his throat, tore out a horn, and in righteous fury killed him with it.
Passage 24
सोऽसृग्धारां वमन् वक्त्रात् प्रचाहिण्मूत्रमुत्सृजन्। विक्षिपंश्चरणानुच्चैः पर्यस्तविवशेक्षणः॥२४॥
Streams of blood poured from his mouth; he discharged waste, flung his legs high, and rolled his helpless eyes.
Passage 25
कष्टं प्राणान् समुत्सृज्य जगाम यमसादनम्। विबुधास्तुष्टुवुर्व्योम्नि रामं विक्रमशालिनम्॥२५॥
Releasing his life in agony, he went to Yama’s abode. In the sky the gods praised Rāma, treasury of valor.
Passage 26
ववृषुः पुष्पवर्षाणि जगुर्गन्धर्वनायकाः। चाटुकारैर्जयेत्यूचुः सर्वतो देवतागणाः॥२६॥
They showered flowers, chiefs of gandharvas sang, and hosts of gods on every side cried “Victory!” in words of praise.
Passage 27
कश्यपस्य सुतो दैत्यो रत्नाचलदरीशयः। द्रोही सर्वदेवानां रामेण निहतो बलात्॥२७॥
The demon was a son of Kaśyapa who dwelt in a cave of Jewel Mountain and hated all the gods. Rāma had now slain him by force.
Passage 28
तस्मिन् वने मृगास्तस्थुः पक्षिणो मनुजाः सुखम्। हते महाबलीवर्दरूपधारिणि दारुणे॥२८॥
Once that terrible demon of immense strength and bull-form was dead, animals, birds, and human beings lived happily in the forest.
Passage 29
गोपा जयजयेत्यूचुर्मुनयः सिद्धचारणाः। तस्मिन् विनिहते दैत्ये महाबलपराक्रमे॥२९॥
When the immensely powerful demon was slain, cowherds, sages, siddhas, and cāraṇas all cried, “Victory! Victory!”
Passage 30
ऊचुः स्म रावणं गत्वा दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः। पौलस्त्यनन्दन श्रीमंस्त्वयि लोकान् प्रशासति॥३०॥
The daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas went to Rāvaṇa and said, “Glorious son of Pulastya, while you rule the worlds—
Passage 31
हन्यन्ते मर्त्यमात्रेण दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः। तव सेना महाराज हन्यते मर्त्यरूपिणा॥३१॥
“Daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas are being killed by a mere mortal. Great king, your army is being slain by one who bears a human form.
Passage 32
एतद्ध्यनुचितं विद्धि तवास्माभिर्निवेदितम्। रावण उवाच— जानामि मानवः कश्चिद्रघुवंशेऽभवद्भुवि॥३२॥
“Know that this is unworthy of you; therefore we report it.” Rāvaṇa replied: “I know that a certain human has appeared on earth in Raghu’s lineage.
Passage 33
जनकस्य सुता येन व्यूढा भङ्क्त्वा विभोर्धनुः। स एव हन्ति दैत्यान् दानवान् राक्षसानपि॥३३॥
“He married Janaka’s daughter after breaking mighty Śiva’s bow. It is he who is killing daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas. Rāvaṇa sends Sughora
Passage 34
इत्युक्त्वा रावणः क्रोधाद्विससर्ज सुरद्विषः। रामे प्रेषितवानेष सुघोरं नाम राक्षसम्॥३४॥
Having spoken angrily and dismissed the enemies of the gods, Rāvaṇa sent a rākṣasa named Sughora against Rāma.
Passage 35
भो राक्षसचमूनाथ बलवीर्याधिको भवान्। गच्छ त्वयोध्यां यत्रास्ति रामो दशरथात्मजः॥३५॥
“Lord of the rākṣasa host, you excel in strength and valor. Go to Ayodhyā, where Rāma, son of Daśaratha, dwells.
Passage 36
तं विद्धि राक्षसानीकद्रुहं हरधनुद्रुहम्। बहवो निहतास्तेन स्थानस्थेनैव चासुराः॥३६॥
“Know him as the enemy of the rākṣasa army and the breaker of Hara’s bow. Even while remaining in one place he has slain many demons.
Passage 37
शत्रुर्दूरस्थितो कार्यो यावदायाति नान्तिकम्। बद्धमूलः पुनर्हन्यादात्मानं बलसंवृतः॥३७॥
“An enemy must be dealt with while still far away, before he draws near. Once firmly rooted and surrounded by power, he may strike at us in return.
Passage 38
इत्युक्त्वा प्रहितस्तेन राक्षसानीकनायकः। एकाकी बलदृप्तोऽसौ खमार्गेण तमाययौ॥३८॥
Thus dispatched by Rāvaṇa, the leader of the rākṣasa force—proud of his power and traveling alone—came by the path of the sky.
Passage 39
दृष्ट्वा प्रमोदविपिनं राक्षसः फलितद्रुमम्। परां मुदमवापैष उवास बहुवासरम्॥३९॥
Seeing Pramoda forest filled with fruiting trees, the rākṣasa felt immense delight and remained there for many days.
Passage 40
रामस्याभिमुखो भूत्वा प्रतीक्षन् समयं स्थितः। विलुनन् वनं सर्वं भीषयन् पशुपक्षिणः॥४०॥
Watching for an opportunity to confront Rāma, he waited while ravaging the entire forest and terrifying its animals and birds.
Passage 41
शब्दं करोति गहने दरीप्रतिरवोत्कटम्। त्रासयत्यखिलान् दुष्टो दुर्दर्शविपुलाननः॥४१॥
Deep in the woods he made a terrible noise magnified by echoes from the caves. The wicked, huge-faced creature terrified everyone.
Passage 42
विमोच्य फलसन्दोहमत्ति मारयते पशून्। एवं सोऽत्यनयं कुर्वन्नुवासात्यन्तदारुणः॥४२॥
He tore down and ate clusters of fruit and killed animals. Committing such outrages, the exceedingly dreadful being remained there.
Passage 43
नैतस्मिन् विपिनोद्देशे कोऽपि गच्छति मानुषः। पलायन्तेऽस्य शब्देन दूरादेव नरा मृगाः॥४३॥
No human being entered that part of the forest; at the mere sound of him, people and animals fled from afar.
Passage 44
एकदा भगवान् रामस्तत्र क्रीडनकौतुकी। आजगाम गवां वृन्दैर्गोपैश्च परिवारितः॥४४॥
One day the Blessed Rāma, eager to play, came there surrounded by herds of cows and cowherd boys.
Passage 45
वेणुं विरणयन् वक्त्रे वीतभीर्बालकेलिकृत्। तलशब्दैस्तालिकाभिर्वने कोलाहलं दधौ॥४५॥
Fearlessly sounding the flute at his lips and enjoying boyish play, he filled the forest with the clamor of rhythmic handclaps.
Passage 46
तेषां तं निनदं श्रुत्वा वीतनिद्रः सराक्षसः। आजगाम बलोद्रिक्तो हुङ्कारोच्चारभीषणः॥४६॥
Awakened by their noise, the rākṣasa approached, swollen with strength and terrifying in his shouted roars.
Passage 47
गर्जयन्निव कान्तारं तर्जयन्निव गोकुलम्। कूर्जयन्निव तडित्पातं भूपृष्ठं दारयन्निव॥४७॥
He seemed to make the wilderness itself roar, to threaten all Gokula, to thunder like a lightning strike, and to split the surface of the earth.
Passage 48
भीषणो धूमधूम्राङ्गः करालज्वाललोचनः। उल्कामुखो ललज्जिह्वस्तडित्वानिव तोयदः॥४८॥
Terrifying and smoke-dark in body, he had eyes like dreadful flames, a meteorlike mouth, and a lolling tongue. He resembled a cloud charged with lightning.
Passage 49
अद्य मेऽवसरो जातः करिष्ये तृप्तिमुत्तमाम्। मर्त्यानामामिषैः स्निग्धैः स्वामिकार्यं च साधये॥४९॥
He thought, “Today my opportunity has come. I shall satisfy myself completely with the rich flesh of mortals and accomplish my master’s task.”
Passage 50
एवं विचिन्त्य हृदयं प्राप्तो गोपालमण्डले। यत्र वेणुं क्वणन् रामः क्रीडते सखिभिः सह॥५०॥
Thinking thus, he reached the circle of cowherds where Rāma played with his friends while sounding the flute.
Passage 51
गोपा अस्य वपुर्वीक्ष्य दंष्ट्राभिर्भीषणाननम्। तिर्यग्भ्रुकुटिदुर्दर्शं त्रस्तमण्डलके स्थिताः॥५१॥
The cowherds saw his body, his face fearsome with fangs and almost impossible to look upon beneath slanting, knotted brows. Their circle stood terrified.
Passage 52
केचिच्चकम्पिरे गोपाः केचित्सिस्विदुरङ्गकैः। केचिद्विवर्णवदना भयेनासुर्गवां दुहः॥५२॥
Some cowherds trembled, some sweated over their limbs, and some of the cow milkers went pale with fear.
Passage 53
गावो वीक्ष्य सुदुर्दर्शं मुखज्वालासमुद्गिरम्। विहाय शाद्वलं सर्वं वने भीता विदुद्रुवुः॥५३॥
Seeing the dreadful being pour flames from his mouth, the terrified cows left all the pasture and scattered through the forest.
Passage 54
इत्थं क्रीडारसं भिन्दन् रामस्याद्भुतकर्मणः। आजगामासुरः कोपान्मण्डलीं वीक्षयन्निव॥५४॥
Thus breaking the playful rasa of Rāma of wondrous deeds, the angry demon advanced as though he would consume the whole circle with his gaze.
Passage 55
दृष्ट्वा भयेन सम्भ्रान्तान् गोपालान् गोकदम्बकान्। उवाच भगवान् रामः स्वानां भीतिं हरन्निव॥५५॥
Seeing the cowherds and herds of cattle bewildered by fear, the Blessed Rāma spoke, seeming to take away the terror of his own people.
Passage 56
गोपाला मा विभीत भोः किं भयं वो मयि स्थिते। गोकुलं रक्षत प्राज्ञा यावदेनं निहन्म्यहम्॥५६॥
“Cowherds, do not be afraid! What danger can there be while I am here? Wise friends, protect Gokula while I kill this creature.”
Passage 57
इति गोपान् समाश्वास्य बद्धपीतपटः कटौ। राक्षसस्याभिमुखतस्तस्थौ रामः स्मयन्निव॥५७॥
Reassuring the cowherds, Rāma fastened his yellow cloth around his waist and stood smiling before the rākṣasa.
Passage 58
उवाच तस्मै बलवानवगण्य विशेषतः। किमन्यैस्त्रासितैर्मूढ मामेहि त्वां निहन्म्यहम्॥५८॥
The mighty Lord treated him with utter contempt and said, “Fool, why terrify the others? Come to me; I shall kill you.”
Passage 59
ततः स मुष्टिमाबध्य रामस्याभिमुखं द्रुतः। आगत्य च बलाद्रामं जघानोरसि मुष्टिना॥५९॥
The demon clenched his fist, rushed straight at Rāma, and struck him forcefully in the chest.
Passage 60
स तस्य वज्रसदृशं मुष्टिघातं प्रसूनवत्। उवाह निजपाणिभ्यां जग्राह च भुजौ रिपोः॥६०॥
Rāma bore that thunderbolt-like blow as though it were a flower, then caught both arms of his enemy in his hands.
Passage 61
सोऽपि रामस्य दोर्दण्डौ जग्राहोभयपाणिना। युयुधाते तत उभौ मल्लाविव जयैषिणौ॥६१॥
The demon in turn seized Rāma’s stafflike arms with both hands. The two fought like wrestlers, each seeking victory.
Passage 62
अन्योन्यं बाहुचलनैरन्योन्यं श्रोणिघट्टनैः। अन्योन्यं जानुनिष्पेषैरन्योन्यं तलताडनैः॥६२॥
They struggled through arm movements, hip against hip, crushing knee against knee, and exchanging slaps.
Passage 63
परिरभ्योन्मर्दनैश्च वियुज्य परिघट्टनैः। वक्षस्यायोज्य मथनैर्युध्येते बलिनौ मिथः॥६३॥
The powerful pair fought by grappling and crushing, breaking apart and colliding again, pressing chest to chest and churning one another.
Passage 64
बाहुयुद्धे पराभूतो वियुज्य दितिजः स्थितः। दंष्ट्राकरालवक्त्रेण भीषयन्निव दूरतः॥६४॥
Defeated in the contest of arms, the demon disengaged and stood at a distance, trying to terrify Rāma with his fang-filled, dreadful mouth.
Passage 65
रामोऽथ तमभिद्रुत्य जघानास्मै चपेटया। सोऽतिमात्रं तया सम्यग्घूर्णन् परिपीडितः॥६५॥
Rāma charged him and struck him with a slap. Utterly overwhelmed by the blow, the demon reeled violently.
Passage 66
अथैनं मुष्टिना भूयो यावत्ताडयते हृदि। तावद्गृहीत्वा पदयोर्भ्रामितः सर्वतो दिशः॥६६॥
As the demon moved to strike Rāma’s heart again with his fist, Rāma caught him by the feet and whirled him through every direction.
Passage 67
ततो हन्त बलं कृत्वा पातयामास भूतले। पद्भ्यां च पोथयामास यथा प्राणैर्वियुज्यते॥६७॥
Gathering his killing strength, Rāma cast him onto the earth and crushed him with his feet until life seemed to leave him.
Passage 68
तं तथा व्यसुमालोक्य तत्याज बलिनां वरः। सोऽपि मीलितदृक् प्राणैर्वियुक्तो भूमिदर्शनः॥६८॥
Seeing him apparently lifeless, the best of the strong released him. The demon lay facing the ground, eyes closed and seemingly without breath.
Passage 69
अदृश्यत गवां मध्ये हर्षितैर्गतसाध्वसैः। वज्रोपमपदाघातत्रुटिताशेषविग्रहः॥६९॥
Among the now joyful and fearless cows he appeared with his entire body shattered by Rāma’s thunderbolt-like foot-blows.
Passage 70
व्यादाय वदनं भूमौ पतितस्तत्क्षणान्मृतः। प्रसारितायततरपाणिपादोऽन्धुलोचनः॥७०॥
He lay upon the ground with mouth open, apparently dead that instant, his long arms and legs outstretched and his eyes darkened.
Passage 71
धूलिधूसरसर्वाङ्गो मुक्तकेशकदम्बकः। ध्वस्तास्थिपञ्जरः सद्यो गिरिगण्ड इव च्युतः॥७१॥
Dust covered every limb, his mass of hair hung loose, and his cage of bones was shattered. He looked like a broken peak fallen from a mountain.
Passage 72
तं वीक्ष्य विस्मिताः सर्वे गोपाः सञ्जातसम्भ्रमाः। उक्त्वा जयजयेयेनं तुष्टुवुर्व्रजनायकम्॥७२॥
Seeing him, all the astonished cowherds gathered excitedly. Crying “Victory! Victory!” they praised the Lord of Vraja.
Passage 73
अथ सङ्क्रीडमानास्ते पुरस्कृत्य गवां कुलम्। मध्ये रामं लक्ष्मणं च वेष्टयित्वाखिलाः स्थिताः॥७३॥
They resumed their play, placing the herds before them and forming a circle around Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa in their midst.
Passage 74
पाययित्वा पशून् सर्वान् सारवं विमलं जलम्। पद्मादिभिः कृताकल्पाः कूर्दमानाः समेधिताः॥७४॥
They gave all the animals clear water from Sārava, adorned themselves with lotuses and other flowers, and continued their exuberant games.
Passage 75
वनान्तात् सन्निवर्तन्त सङ्कुलीकृत्य धेनुकम्। हसन्तो हासयन्तश्च वादयन्तो विषाणिकाः॥७५॥
Gathering the cows into a dense herd, they returned from the forest laughing, making one another laugh, and sounding their buffalo-horn instruments.
Passage 76
दूरादुद्यम्य दोष्णा दिशि दिशि दययान्दोलयित्वा दुकूलं दर्पादाहूय दैत्यान् नयनजलजयोर्दीव्यतो दीपदीपे। दैत्यद्वेषो दिनस्य द्युतिभृदुपरतो दिव्यदावादुपेतो दत्तां दीप्तिं दुरापां दधदुरसि दृढं दाम वो दाशरथ्यः॥७६॥
From afar Daśarathi raised his arm and waved his cloth in every direction, proudly challenging the demons. His lotus eyes flashed like lamps; enemy of the daityas and sun of the day, he bore upon his chest a firm garland and a radiance difficult for others to attain. The Sughoraśamana pilgrimage lake

रत्नाद्रेः प्रान्तदेशे तु ह्रदमासीन्मनोहरम्। सुघोरशमनं नाम तीर्थं घोराघनाशनम्॥७७॥
At the edge of Jewel Mountain lay a beautiful lake named Sughoraśamana, a sacred place that destroys dreadful sins.

तत्र राजन्न यः स्नायात् सुघोरशमने ह्रदे। तस्यादिव्रजयात्रायाः सुघोरः फलमश्नुते॥७८॥
“King, whoever does not bathe in the Sughoraśamana lake forfeits the fruit of the primordial Vraja pilgrimage to Sughora.
Passage 79
तस्मात् तत्र विशेषेण गन्तव्यं धर्मकोविदैः। स्नात्वा दत्त्वा द्विजन्मभ्यः प्राप्नुयात् सकलं फलम्॥७९॥
“Therefore those who understand dharma must make a special effort to go there. By bathing and giving gifts to brāhmaṇas, one obtains the pilgrimage’s full fruit.
Passage 80
पादाघातैर्यदा दैत्यः पोथितोऽपि समन्ततः। न ममार गलोद्देशे रुद्धप्राणो बहून् क्षणान्॥८०॥
Although the demon had been crushed on every side by blows from Rāma’s feet, he did not die; his breath remained blocked in his throat for many moments.
Passage 81
अथोवाच स्वयं रामः कथं न म्रियसे खल। मत्पादघातैर्नितरां पोथितोऽपि धरातले॥८१॥
Rāma himself asked, “Villain, why do you not die, although my foot-blows have crushed you so thoroughly upon the ground?”

दैत्यः सुघोर ऊचे तं मुक्तिर्मे राम दीयताम्। तदाहं विसृजाम्येतच्छरीरं झटिति प्रभो॥८२॥
The demon Sughora replied, “Rāma, grant me liberation. Then, Lord, I shall at once abandon this body.”

राम उवाच— यद्यादिव्रज एतस्मिन् यात्रार्थं पर्यटिष्यति। अयं ह्रदमुपेक्ष्यैव नोपैष्यति यदाऽसुर॥८३॥
Rāma said: “Demon, whenever someone travels through this primordial Vraja for pilgrimage but does not come to Sughora’s lake—
Passage 84
यात्राफलं तदा तस्य तुभ्यमेव भविष्यति। तेन पुण्येन दितिज विमुञ्च स्वकलेवरम्॥८४॥
“The fruit of that person’s pilgrimage will become yours. By that merit, son of Diti, release your body.”
Passage 85
इति श्रुत्वा स दैतेयस्त्यक्त्वा प्राणान् दिवं गतः। अतो राजन् विशेषेण सुघोरशमनं व्रजेत्॥८५॥
Hearing this, the daitya released his life and went to heaven. “Therefore, king, one should make a special visit to Sughoraśamana.

रामस्याज्ञां पालयता कर्तव्यं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। सुघोरशमनं नाम देवखातं महाह्रदम्॥८६॥
