Passage 1
अथ रघुपतिवर्यः कोटिकन्दर्पजैत्र- द्युतिमधुरिमसिन्धुर्बन्धुरार्तान्तराणाम्। अधिगतवरदानः शारदीं वीक्ष्य राकां व्रजपुरवनिताभ्यः प्रेषयामास दूतीः॥१॥
Then the foremost descendant of Raghu—an ocean of radiant sweetness who conquered ten million gods of love and was the intimate friend of afflicted hearts—remembered the boon the women had obtained. Seeing the autumn full moon, he sent female messengers to the women of Vraja.
Passage 2
धीमती श्रीमती ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा च मधुयूथिका। धृतिनी धारिणी धरा धीराधीरा धरा धृतिः॥२॥
Among them were Dhīmatī, Śrīmatī, Jyeṣṭhā, Śreṣṭhā, Madhuyūthikā, Dhṛtinī, Dhāriṇī, Dharā, Dhīrādhīrā, Dharā, and Dhṛti.
Passage 3
मधुहासा मधुली च मधुभाषा च मोहिनी। शोभिनी क्षोभिणीत्याद्या दूतिकाः शतशः प्रभोः॥३॥
There were also Madhuhāsā, Madhulī, Madhubhāṣā, Mohinī, Śobhinī, Kṣobhiṇī, and hundreds of other messengers of the Lord.
Passage 4
गुणवर्णनचातुर्यवत्यो धैर्यावहारिकाः। उत्कर्षख्यापनपराः पट्व्यः कमललोचनाः॥४॥
The lotus-eyed women were skilled at describing his virtues, able to draw away reserve, intent upon proclaiming his excellence, and expert in their task.
Passage 5
बहुवित्तव्ययोदारा बहुभीतिप्रदर्शिकाः। विद्यमानेषु गुरुषु वाक्पाटवविधायिकाः॥५॥
They spent abundant wealth with generosity, could display many alarming possibilities, and knew how to speak adroitly even while elders were present.
Passage 6
नीतिविद्यासु निपुणा नानाशास्त्रविचक्षणाः। नानाकोककलाभ्यासा दक्षिणाः प्रियवादिनीः॥६॥
They were accomplished in diplomacy, discerning in many sciences, practiced in the many arts of love, dexterous, and pleasing in speech.
Passage 7
विपञ्चीकलभाषिण्य ऋतुवर्णनदक्षिणाः। वित्तापहारनिपुणा रतिसौख्यप्रबोधिकाः॥७॥
Their voices were musical like the vīṇā; they skillfully described the seasons, expertly removed sorrow, and awakened understanding of love’s joy.
Passage 8
कुलभीतिनिवारिण्यः श्रीरामरतिबोधिकाः। तारुण्यबलबोधिन्यो वयसः फलबोधिकाः॥८॥
They dispelled fear for family honor, awakened love for Śrī Rāma, made the girls aware of youth’s power, and taught them the true fruit of their age.
Passage 9
एकमेव जगत्सारं बोधयन्त्यो हरिं पतिम्। नानावेषविधायिन्यः स्वजनभ्रान्तिनाशिकाः॥९॥
They taught that Hari alone, as beloved Lord, is the essence of the world. They could assume many disguises and dispel the confusion of the girls’ own families. > The Rewa witness reads “They taught that he alone is the entire world” in > the opening half of this passage.
Passage 10
श्रीरामचन्द्रबिम्बस्य चन्द्रिका इव निर्गताः। देशकालवयोऽवस्थाचित्तवाक्यप्रदर्शिकाः॥१०॥
They issued forth like moonlight from the orb of Śrī Rāmacandra, revealing the right speech for each place, time, age, condition, and state of mind.
Passage 11
याश्चान्या माधुरीकान्तिचातुरीप्रमुखाः प्रभोः। नित्यमेवातिमोहिन्याः सहजायाश्च दूतिकाः॥११॥
Other perpetually enchanting messengers of the Lord and Sahajā were headed by Mādhurī, Kānti, and Cāturī.
Passage 12
माधुरी चैव कान्तिश्च चातुरी रूपरञ्जिता। सुषमा भारती प्रज्ञा नित्योत्साहा कलावती॥१२॥
They were Mādhurī, Kānti, Cāturī, Rūparañjitā, Suṣamā, Bhāratī, Prajñā, Nityotsāhā, and Kalāvatī.
Passage 13
ताः सर्वाः प्रययुर्दूत्य आज्ञामादाय मूर्धभिः। रामस्य लोकरामस्य गृहाणि व्रजवासिनाम्॥१३॥
All those messengers received upon their heads the command of Rāma, the delight of the worlds, and departed for the homes of Vraja’s residents.
Passage 14
सर्वतः प्रेषिता दूत्यो बालानां चित्ततोषिकाः। एकां तु मुरलीं दूतीमगृह्णात्स्वकराम्बुजे॥१४॥
The messengers who delighted the young women’s hearts were sent in every direction, while Rāma retained one messenger—his flute—in his own lotus hand.
Passage 15
सर्वदूतीगणश्रेष्ठां ज्येष्ठां तु मतिमत्तमाम्। प्रियः प्रस्थापयामास कृष्णां रामनिकेतने॥१५॥
The beloved Lord sent Jyeṣṭhā, wisest and foremost among all the messengers, to Kṛṣṇā in Rāma’s dwelling. Kṛṣṇā and Sahajānandinī’s two circles
Passage 16
तत्र कृष्णा व्रजे ज्येष्ठा वयसा च गुणैरपि। कनिष्ठा तु ततो रामा सहजानन्दिनी तु या॥१६॥
In that Vraja, Kṛṣṇā was senior both in age and virtues. Rāmā, known as Sahajānandinī, was younger than she.
Passage 17
कृष्णाङ्ग्या वल्लभेशस्य नवनीलमणिप्रभा। सहजानन्दिनी साक्षाद् गौरी विद्युल्लताकृतिः॥१७॥
Kṛṣṇā, beloved of the Lord of beloveds, shone like a fresh blue sapphire, while Sahajānandinī herself was fair and formed like a vine of lightning.
Passage 18
परस्परसपत्न्यौ ते ऐकान्त्यात्कृतसङ्गमम्। प्रियं दृष्ट्वाथवा श्रुत्वा मानवत्यौ बभूवतुः॥१८॥
As co-wives, either one would become offended whenever she saw or heard that their beloved had met the other in solitude.
Passage 19
अतस्ते वल्लभे रामो वामदक्षिणपार्श्वयोः। गृहीत्वा समभावेन रमते स्वेच्छया प्रभुः॥१९॥
Therefore Lord Rāma kept the two beloveds equally at his left and right sides and delighted with them freely, maintaining equal affection.
Passage 20
कृतेऽन्यथा तु न सुखं कदाचिदपि जायते। श्रीनन्दनस्य यो भ्राता ज्येष्ठस्तुल्यवयोगुणः॥२०॥
If he acted otherwise, happiness could never arise. Śrī Nandana had an elder brother equal to him in age and virtues.
Passage 21
तस्य पुत्री स्वयं कृष्णा प्राणेभ्योऽप्यतिवल्लभा। ताभ्यां कर्तुं महारासं प्रभुरैच्छन्मुदान्वितः॥२१॥
Kṛṣṇā was that brother’s own daughter and dearer to him than life itself. The joyful Lord desired to perform the great rāsa with both beloveds.
Passage 22
महाराकानिशं वीक्ष्य वरदानं च योषिताम्। उभौ परिकरौ रामश्चक्रे एकान्तमण्डले॥२२॥
Seeing the magnificent full-moon night and remembering the boon granted to the women, Rāma gathered both circles within a secluded arena.
Passage 23
उभयोश्चैव याः सख्यस्तथा दूत्यश्च चेटिकाः। नित्यसिद्धाः स्त्रियो याश्च तथा साधनसिद्धिगाः॥२३॥
There were the companions, messengers, and attendants of both beloveds, as well as eternally perfected women and those who had attained perfection through spiritual practice. All classes of perfected women are summoned
Passage 24
अनुग्रहैकसिद्धाश्च देवानामङ्गनाश्च याः। याश्च स्त्रीरूपतः प्राप्ता देवरूपा वराङ्गनाः॥२४॥
There were women perfected solely through grace, women of the gods, and excellent women who had formerly possessed divine forms and had now attained female forms.
Passage 25
याश्च वेदत्रयऋचः प्राप्ताः स्त्रीवेषवेषिताः। मुनयश्च प्रेमविद्धाः कृत्वा स्त्रीरूपमागताः॥२५॥
There were hymns of the three Vedas who had assumed women’s dress and sages who, pierced by love, had taken female forms and come there.
Passage 26
नरकिन्नरनागेन्द्रनगेन्द्राणां च याः स्त्रियः। कुमार्यो मध्यवयसः प्रौढाश्चैव तु याः स्त्रियः॥२६॥
There were women born among humans, kinnaras, great nāgas, and mountains: young maidens, women of middle age, and mature women alike.
Passage 27
ऊढाश्चैव तथानूढा रामप्रेमवशीकृताः। नानादेशोद्भवाश्चैव कन्यकाः सुखितव्रजे॥२७॥
Married and unmarried women, all brought under the power of love for Rāma, were joined by maidens born in many lands who lived in Sukhitā’s Vraja.
Passage 28
तासामानयनार्थाय प्रेषितास्तत्र दूतिकाः। उद्धरिष्यति ताः सर्वाः प्रेमबद्धाः समागताः॥२८॥
The messengers had been sent to bring them there. Bound by love, they all assembled, and the Lord would raise every one of them to fulfillment.
Passage 29
लतारूपाश्च याः कान्ताः प्रमोदवनमध्यगाः। ब्रह्मणो मानसाज्जाताः असंख्या एव संख्यया॥२९॥
There were countless lovely women who had dwelt in the Pramoda forest in the forms of vines, born from the mind of Brahmā.
Passage 30
पुरा क्षीरसमुद्राच्च लक्ष्म्या सह विनिःसृताः। अजातपाणिग्रहणा अदृष्टरमणाननाः॥३०॥
Long ago they had emerged from the Ocean of Milk together with Lakṣmī. They had never married and had never beheld the face of a lover.
Passage 31
तासां वयश्च रूपं च भाग्यं सौभाग्यमेव च। कान्तित्वं कमनीयत्वं स्त्रीत्वं वा विधिनिर्मितम्॥३१॥
Providence had fashioned their age, beauty, fortune, auspicious feminine grace, loveliness, and very womanhood.
Passage 32
तत्सर्वं सफलीकर्तुं स्वरूपानन्ददानतः। प्रभुरिच्छां यदा चक्रे समाहूतास्तदैव ताः॥३२॥
When the Lord desired to make all those gifts fruitful by bestowing the bliss of his own form, they too were summoned at once. Divine sleep covers Vraja
Passage 33
मण्डलेशी महासिद्धा दाराः शाण्डिल्यशर्मणः। लीलाशक्तिः प्रभोरेषा वितेने निजवैभवम्॥३३॥
The sovereign of the circle, a greatly perfected woman and wife of Śāṇḍilya Śarman, was the Lord’s own power of divine play. She now unfolded her majesty.
Passage 34
लीलानुकूल्यमतनोत् सर्वभावेन भूपते। अतो व्रजजनाः सर्वे तस्यां रात्रावसुषुपन्॥३४॥
O king, she made every circumstance favorable for the play. Thus all the people of Vraja fell asleep that night.
Passage 35
येऽप्यप्रमत्तहृदया निशि जागरितव्रताः। महाभोगबलोपेतास्तेऽपि निद्रायितास्तया॥३५॥
Even the vigilant who had vowed to remain awake at night and possessed the strength of great enjoyment were put to sleep by her.
Passage 36
मायायवनिकां विश्वरङ्गविस्तार्य समधिष्ठिताः। ये च निद्रायिता लोके व्रजे रामस्य मायया॥३६॥
Rāma’s māyā spread its curtain across the theater of the world and took command; by it the people of Vraja were made to sleep.
Passage 37
ते नीता ब्रह्मणो लोके त्रिपाद्यत्र प्रतिष्ठितः। सर्वानन्दगणस्थानमुत्तरोत्तरतोऽधिकम्॥३७॥
They were carried into Brahmā’s realm, where the three transcendent quarters are established—a domain in which every order of bliss rises beyond the one before it.
Passage 38
यस्मिन्नेकतां प्राप्य मात्रानन्दाः प्रतिष्ठिताः। निधास्यति परे प्रेम्णि तत उद्धृत्य तानपि॥३८॥
There their limited joys entered unity and came to rest. Having raised them even from that state, she would establish them in supreme love. Rāma enters the moonlit Pramoda forest
Passage 39
अथ व्रजपुरं प्राप्तः श्रीमान् राघवनन्दनः। गोचारणपरिश्रान्तः सायं न्यविशदालये॥३९॥
At evening the glorious son of Raghu returned to the settlement of Vraja and, weary from pasturing the cows, entered his home.
Passage 40
मात्रा साङ्कल्यया सम्यग् वीक्ष्य नीराजितः सुतः। तत उद्वर्तितः स्नातः प्राशितोऽन्नं चतुर्विधम्॥४०॥
His mother Sāṅkalyā lovingly beheld her son and waved lights before him. He was then massaged with fragrant paste, bathed, and fed the four kinds of food.
Passage 41
स्वापितः कोमले तल्पे पादसंवाहनादिभिः। तास्ताः पृष्ट्वा कथाः सुप्तः सर्वगोचारचेष्टितः॥४१॥
He was laid upon a soft bed and served by the massaging of his feet and other attentions. After being asked about all the events of the day’s cowherding, he appeared to fall asleep.
Passage 42
अथ राकानिशाकान्तकरैर्धवलितां भृशम्। उत्फुल्लमल्लिकामोदपूर्णां संवीक्ष्य सन्निशाम्॥४२॥
He then saw the beautiful night flooded with the lovely rays of the full moon and filled with the fragrance of blossoming jasmine.
Passage 43
अगात् प्रमोदविपिनं प्रेमानन्दरसोदधिः। अपश्यत् सर्वतो दृष्ट्वा मङ्गलां मङ्गलाटवीम्॥४३॥
The ocean of love’s bliss went to the Pramoda forest. Looking all around, he beheld that auspicious woodland of delight.
Passage 44
सरयूसमीरलहरीलुलन्नवमल्लिकादलकलापमञ्जुलाम्। स्फुटमल्लिकाकुसुमसन्ततस्रवन्मकरन्दतुन्दिलमिलिन्दमन्दिरम्॥४४॥
Fresh clusters of jasmine leaves swayed beautifully in waves of breeze from the Sarayū. The forest was a dwelling for bees grown heavy with the honey that continually streamed from fully opened jasmine flowers.
Passage 45
अरविन्दकाननपरागधोरणीस्मरसैन्यवाजिसुरधूलिपूरिताम्। नवपूर्णचन्द्रकिरणैररुणीकृतप्रतिपत्रशोभिसहकारवञ्जुलाम्॥४५॥
Streams of pollen from lotus groves filled it like heavenly dust raised by the horses of Love’s army. Fresh full-moon rays tinged every leaf, and its mango and vañjula trees shone beautifully.
Passage 46
कुमुदाटवीसुमविकाशमेदुरामलचन्द्रिकास्मरयशःप्रपूरिताम्। अमृतस्रुतिस्वपितनिश्चलक्वणद्राजहंसकुलकूजितान्तराम्॥४६॥
Dense moonlight opened the flowers of the water-lily groves and filled the forest with Love’s spotless glory. Streams of nectar lulled it into stillness, within which flocks of royal swans softly called.
Passage 47
स्फुटसप्तपर्णमधुगन्धमत्तदिग्गजदानपूर्णपटलीनिदानतां गताम्। इत्यसीमसद्दीप्तिकारणसदनानपेक्षरतिकेलिबोधनाम्॥४७॥
The rich fragrance of flowering saptaparṇa became like clouds of ichor from the intoxicated elephants of the directions. In this way the limitless, radiant forest awakened amorous play without need of any other setting.
Passage 48
अथ तत्र सोमसवनाभिधे वटे परिभूतकल्पतरुमाधुरीभरे। नवनीलमारकतपत्रमञ्जुले मणिरत्नपुष्पिणि सुधाभरस्रवे॥४८॥
There stood the banyan named Soma-savana, whose abundant sweetness surpassed the wish-fulfilling tree. It was lovely with fresh emerald-blue leaves, flowered with jewels, and streamed a profusion of nectar.
Passage 49
गगनस्पृशि स्फुरति शारदानिलप्रविलोलपर्णविटपायतायते। शतकोटिसंख्यरविचन्द्रमण्डलातिभाजि शीतलतरस्फुरत्तले॥४९॥
It rose shining to touch the sky, its long branches and leaves swaying in the autumn breeze. Its radiant, cooling ground possessed splendor beyond the discs of a hundred million suns and moons.
Passage 50
मणिरत्नवेदिरुदयन्त्यलौकिकद्युतिमत्यवाङ्मनसगोचरायति। रचिताष्टकोटिदलमध्यविस्फुरद्दुसरकर्णिकाविकचपङ्कजाकृतिः॥५०॥
There arose a jeweled platform of supernatural radiance, beyond the reach of speech and mind. It had the form of a fully opened lotus: eight crores of petals had been fashioned around a brilliant central pericarp. The secret lotus throne
Passage 51
सर्वतन्त्ररहस्यं तं महायन्त्रं प्रतिष्ठितम्। परब्रह्मार्चनस्थानं चिदानन्दमयं पदम्॥५१॥
That established great yantra was the secret of every tantra, the place where the Supreme Brahman is worshiped, and a station composed of consciousness and bliss.
Passage 52
कालमायागुणातीतं विधिर्निषेध्यगोचरम्। अयं च धातुसंश्लेषमवाङ्मनसचेष्टितम्॥५२॥
It transcended Time, māyā, and the guṇas and lay beyond both prescription and prohibition. It was untouched by the conjunction of material elements and beyond the movements of speech and mind.
Passage 53
असीमकल्याणगुणमशेषद्युतिभाजनम्। चिदानन्दमयं पद्मं यद्वदन्ति मनीषिणः॥५३॥
It possessed limitless auspicious qualities and contained every splendor—the lotus made of consciousness and bliss of which the wise speak.
Passage 54
तस्य प्रान्तेऽप्यवस्थातुं ब्रह्माशेषशिवश्रियः। नार्हन्ति पारमेश्योऽपि किमुतान्ये दिवौकसः॥५४॥
Even Brahmā, Śeṣa, Śiva, and Śrī, though endowed with the Lord’s powers, are not fit to remain at its outer edge—what then of the other gods? Rāma shines upon the great throne
Passage 55
तस्य मध्ये स्वयं स्थित्वा सहजानन्दिनीसखः। व्यराजत महाराजो महासिंहासने यथा॥५५॥
Taking his place at its center, the beloved of Sahajānandinī shone like a great emperor upon a magnificent throne.
Passage 56
कालकोटिसमापूर्णमण्डले चन्द्रमा यथा। मानसोत्फुल्लपद्मान्तर्महामधुकरो यथा॥५६॥
He was like the moon within a perfect circle formed by millions of its phases, or like a great bee within the fully opened lotus of the heart.
Passage 57
कोटिबिम्बमये बिम्बे साक्षाद्दिनमणिर्यथा। कोटिसिद्धिमये सिद्धासने योगीश्वरस्तथा॥५७॥
He was like the sun itself amid ten million reflected discs, or like the Lord of yogins upon a perfected seat composed of ten million spiritual powers.
Passage 58
मणिनूपुरयुग्माढ्यविस्फुरत्पादपल्लवः। यावकद्युतिसन्दोहद्योतिपादाङ्गुलीगणः॥५८॥
His tender, radiant feet were adorned with a pair of jeweled anklets, and the cluster of his toes glowed with masses of crimson lac-dye radiance.
Passage 59
नानावर्णलसच्चीरनाट्यकक्षो मनोहरः। मणिकिङ्किणिकाचारुमेखलादामसुन्दरः॥५९॥
Many-colored shining cloth danced charmingly about his waist, which was beautiful with a girdle strung with jeweled bells.
Passage 60
पञ्चवर्णप्रसूनाद्यवनमालाविराजितः। वैजयन्तीमिलन्मञ्जुमुक्तादामश्रियाञ्चितः॥६०॥
He shone with a forest garland made chiefly of flowers in five colors and was graced by a lovely strand of pearls mingled with the Vaijayantī garland.
Passage 61
पञ्चवर्णमहारत्नदीर्घमालावलम्बितः। कौस्तुभाख्यमणिद्योतकोटीन्दुरविद्युतिः॥६१॥
A long necklace of great gems in five colors hung upon him. The radiance of the jewel named Kaustubha surpassed that of ten million moons, suns, and flashes of lightning.
Passage 62
विचित्रकञ्चुकश्रेष्ठकस्तूरीकुङ्कुमाञ्चितः। रत्नाङ्गदलसद्बाहुरुदामकटकप्रभः॥६२॥
His splendid, variegated bodice was marked with musk and saffron. Jeweled armlets shone upon his arms, and his bracelets cast a mighty brilliance.
Passage 63
निर्णिक्तमुकुराकारकपोलफलकद्युतिः। नासाश्रीनिहितोत्तुङ्गगजमुक्ताफलच्छविः॥६३॥
The surfaces of his cheeks gleamed like polished mirrors, while a lofty pearl from an elephant’s head shone beautifully upon his nose.
Passage 64
माधुर्यसिन्धुमध्यस्थमकराकारकुण्डलः। तन्माणिक्यप्रभापूरच्छुरितालकधोरणिः॥६४॥
Makara-shaped earrings rested within the ocean of his sweetness, and floods of radiance from their rubies tinged the rows of his curls.
Passage 65
कस्तूरीपत्ररचितमध्यस्विडदिव्यमौक्तिकः। कस्तूरीतिलकोल्लासिसद्वृत्ततिलकालिकः॥६५॥
A divine pearl gleamed amid leaf designs painted in musk, and a perfectly rounded beauty mark shone beside his musk tilaka.
Passage 66
भालोच्चैर्निहितोत्तुङ्गमाणिक्योभयतो गते। आकर्णलग्नविमलगजमुक्तालते वहन्॥६६॥
Upon his high forehead he bore a prominent ruby, with pure garlands of elephant pearls extending from either side toward his ears.
Passage 67
बिम्बाधरप्रभोद्रेकरञ्जिताशेषकाननः। चन्द्रबिम्बचमत्कारिचकोराभविलोचनः॥६७॥
The overflowing brilliance of his bimba-red lips colored the entire forest, and his cakora-like eyes outdid the wonder of the moon’s disc.
Passage 68
कोटीन्दुरविरत्नोप्तमहामुकुटरोचितः। मुकुटाग्रततानेककेकिपिच्छावलीधरः॥६८॥
He shone beneath a great crown set with jewels radiant as millions of moons and suns, and rows of many peacock feathers spread from its crest.
Passage 69
तत्संलग्नमहामञ्जुगुञ्जापुञ्जस्रजान्वितः। सर्वाङ्गभूषणोद्योतनिरस्ततिमिरोदयः॥६९॥
A most lovely clustered garland of guñjā berries was fastened to it, while the brilliance of the ornaments upon every limb banished the very arising of darkness.
Passage 70
सुधावर्षिनवोन्नद्भ्रश्रीविग्रहवलाहकः। स्मितैः कुसुमिताः कुर्वन् केलिकुञ्जलताः शतम्॥७०॥
His beautiful embodied form was a freshly risen cloud raining nectar. With his smiles he caused hundreds of vines in the pleasure bowers to flower.
Passage 71
त्रिविधैर्नयनालोकैर्वनभसीरुहां ततीः। अनेकमणिमाणिक्यमयूखाङ्कुरमञ्जरीः॥७१॥
The threefold play of his glances made the forest’s rows of lotuses resemble sprouting clusters of rays from innumerable jewels and rubies.
Passage 72
उद्भावयन् युवापीनव्यायतोरःस्थलद्युतिः। लावण्यस्यापि लावण्यं माधुर्यस्यापि माधुरी॥७२॥
The splendor of his broad, full, youthful chest displayed beauty beyond beauty and sweetness beyond sweetness.
Passage 73
सौभाग्यस्यापि सौभाग्यं श्रियोऽपि महतीं श्रियम्। रूपस्यापि परं रूपं भूषणामपि भूषणम्॥७३॥
He was the good fortune of fortune itself, the supreme glory of Śrī, the highest beauty of beauty, and the ornament of every ornament.
Passage 74
स्वैरेव सहजरङ्गमहोभिर्महिमाञ्चितैः। मुष्णन्नुष्मरुचेरिन्दोरपि मुष्णन् रुचां मदम्॥७४॥
Through the naturally playful festivals of his own majesty, he stole the moon’s cooling brilliance and humbled the pride of every other radiance.

अशेषभुवनोद्दीप्तः शृङ्गारजयदीपकः। गोपीदृष्टिचकोराणामानन्दायैकचन्द्रमाः॥७५॥
He illuminated all the worlds and was the victory lamp of divine love. For the cakora birds of the cowherd women’s eyes, he was the one moon of delight.

वियोगनैशतिमिरं क्षपयन्निव भास्करः। कलासमूहविश्रामधामर्दाशतच्चेष्टितः॥७६॥
Like the sun he seemed to dispel the night-darkness of separation, while his every movement became the resting place for the entire host of arts. Rāma plays the world-enchanting flute

विनिबद्धां कटितटादादाय मुरलीमसौ। पाणिभ्यामङ्गुलीयांशुसाङ्गुलिभ्यामनेकधा॥७७॥
He took from his waist the flute that had been fastened there, holding it in both hands as the rays of his rings mingled with his many fingers.
Passage 78
मधुराधरे च विन्यस्य पूरयन्मुखजैः स्वरैः। विलोलपल्लवाभाभी रन्ध्रानङ्गुलिभिः स्पृशन्॥७८॥
Placing it upon his sweet lips, he filled it with tones born from his mouth and touched its holes with fingers resembling tremulous young leaves.
Passage 79
वामबाहुलसद्वामकपोलफलकाञ्चितः। भयो मुरलिकामश्च किञ्चिन्मुकुलिताननः॥७९॥
His left cheek rested beautifully against his left arm; his face, the flute, and both hands gathered together like a partly closed flower bud.
Passage 80
दक्षिणेन पदाक्षिप्तवामपादस्त्रिभङ्गभृत्। अनङ्गकोटिसौन्दर्यविजित्वरसमद्युतिः॥८०॥
Crossing his left foot with his right, he assumed the threefold-bending pose. His incomparable radiance conquered the beauty of ten million gods of love.
Passage 81
जगौ जगन्मोहनकर्मदीक्षितां शृङ्गारवापीकमलालिषट्कृताम्। लीलासुधासागरराजहंसिकानिक्वाणिनां कोमलकाकलीमसौ॥८१॥
He played a tender melody consecrated to the work of enchanting the world. It was the humming of bees among the lotuses of love’s pool and the soft calling of royal swans upon the ocean of the nectar of divine play.
Passage 82
तन्नादास्वादसजातकम्पनां तरसागमात्। प्रमोदवनगास्तूष्णीमभवन् पशुपक्षिणः॥८२॥
As that sound suddenly arrived and its savor sent tremors through them, the animals and birds of the Pramoda forest fell utterly silent.
Passage 83
आविश्य मङ्गला देवी सकलां प्रमुदाटवीम्। अपिबद्राममुरलीपीयूषरसधोरणीम्॥८३॥
Goddess Maṅgalā entered and pervaded the entire Pramoda forest, drinking the streaming nectar of Rāma’s flute.
Passage 84
प्रमोदवनलतावृक्षविटपान्तरपातिनी। वृष्टिः सुधासीकराणामदृश्यत समन्ततः॥८४॥
A rain of nectar droplets appeared everywhere, falling among the vines, trees, and branches of the Pramoda forest.
Passage 85
रससम्पद्भासनाभिर्वासितहृदोऽप्यलम्। ईयुः शुष्कश्रोत्रियाद्या रसिकत्वं तदा क्षणे॥८५॥
Its displays of rasa’s abundance thoroughly perfumed every heart. In that very instant even dry ritualists and others became connoisseurs of rasa.
Passage 86
प्रेमानन्दरसाभिन्नशब्दाद्वैतमयं जगत्। तस्मिन् क्षणे समभवद्रामवंशीनिनादने॥८६॥
At the sound of Rāma’s flute, the world at once became a nondual expanse of sound inseparable from the rasa of love’s bliss.
Passage 87
द्वापरान्ते तथा कृष्णः कर्ता वृन्दावनेष्वथ। अथ वा भगवान् रामश्चकार मुरलीध्वनिम्॥८७॥
At the end of Dvāpara, Kṛṣṇa would do the same in Vṛndāvana; but here and now Lord Rāma produced the music of the flute.
Passage 88
प्रमुदाटव्यां सर्वसम्पत्समृद्धिसमुदायिनि। नादृश्यत तरुः कश्चिच्छुष्कपत्रोपसेवितः॥८८॥
In the Pramoda forest, source of the fullness of every treasure, not a single tree could be seen bearing a withered leaf.
Passage 89
तदाकर्ण्य व्रजवामा मुरलीस्वररञ्जितम्। प्रेमानन्दपयोराशौ न्यमज्जन्नाशिरःशिखम्॥८९॥
Hearing that enchanting flute tone, the women of Vraja plunged from head to foot into the ocean of love’s bliss.
Passage 90
उन्मज्योन्मज्य मज्जन्ति तदा स्मरमहोदधौ। वक्षोजतुम्बिकायुग्ममवलम्ब्यापि सादरम्॥९०॥
Again and again they surfaced only to sink once more into Love’s great ocean, as though respectfully supported by the pair of gourd-like breasts upon each woman’s chest.
Passage 91
ज्वलन्नपि हृदि स्मेरस्तासां विरहपावकः। अलिप्यत विशेषेण स्नेहेन द्विगुणीकृतः॥९१॥
The fire of separation blazed within their hearts yet seemed to smile; fed by the oil of affection, it grew twice as strong.
Passage 92
अथ प्राणप्रियप्रेष्ठसंयोगस्पृहया ततः। उत्तेरुर्व्रजवामाक्ष्यो रागसागरपाथसः॥९२॥
Longing to unite with the beloved dearer than life, the doe-eyed women of Vraja then rose from the waters of love’s ocean.
Passage 93
त्यक्त्वा व्रजपुरं सर्वाः प्रतस्थुः प्रियसन्निधौ। नगैरिव तरङ्गिण्यो गुरुभिर्नापि विघ्निताः॥९३॥
All left the settlement of Vraja and set out for their beloved’s presence. Their elders could no more stop them than mountains can stop rushing rivers. The women proceed through the forest
Passage 94
रणच्चरणमञ्जीरैश्चट्काङ्गुलिभूषणैः। माणिक्यकिङ्किणीशालिमेखलादामभिस्तथा॥९४॥
Their anklets rang upon their feet, ornaments chimed upon their toes, and their girdle-strands were rich with ruby bells.
Passage 95
वलयानां कङ्कणानां समूहैर्गतिचञ्चलैः। मणिहारैश्चन्द्रहारैरन्योन्यवलनोद्धुरैः॥९५॥
Clusters of bangles and bracelets trembled with their movement, while jeweled necklaces and moonlike strands swung and crossed one another.
Passage 96
सुवर्णरत्नताटङ्कैः साटोपटकदम्बकैः। शब्दायमानैः परितः कुञ्जवीथीरबोधयन्॥९६॥
Their splendid clusters of gold and jeweled earrings sounded on every side, awakening all the pathways through the bowers.
Passage 97
मुखेन्दुभिश्चकोरीणां केशपाशैश्च केकिनाम्। गत्या कलहंसानां करिणां गतिविभ्रमैः॥९७॥
Their moonlike faces recalled cakora birds, their masses of hair peacocks, their gait royal swans, and their graceful swaying elephants.
Passage 98
काञ्चीकलापैरलिनां मध्यैः केसरिणां तथा। कण्ठनादैः कोकिलानां चातकानां तनुत्विषा॥९८॥
Their jeweled girdles suggested rows of bees, their waists those of lions, their voices cuckoos, and their slender radiance the rain-thirsty cātaka birds.
Passage 99
कुचयुग्मैश्च कोकीनां भोगिनां रोमराजिभिः। व्याहारैः शुकवर्याणां रुन्धन्त्यः कानने गतिम्॥९९॥
Their paired breasts recalled cakravāka birds, the fine lines of hair upon their bodies serpents, and their speech the finest parrots. With such beauty they seemed to arrest movement in the forest.
Passage 100
आननैश्चक्रवाकानां मध्येन करिणां तथा। कचैः काकोदराणां च चातकानां मुखत्विषा॥१००॥
Their faces rivaled cakravākas, their middles elephants, their tresses black serpents, and the brilliance of their mouths cātaka birds.
Passage 101
शुकानां करभूषास्थवैदूर्यमणिभिस्तथा। मध्ये मार्गं च सम्प्राप्ताः सृजन्त्यः सुमहोदयम्॥१०१॥
The cat’s-eye gems set in their hand ornaments resembled green parrots. Thus they reached the middle of the path, producing a magnificent effulgence.
Passage 102
मर्दयन्त्यः पदैर्भोगान् विषफूत्कारभीषणान्। हरन्त्यस्तिमिरस्तोमं कूजयन्त्यो वनस्थलीः॥१०२॥
Their feet seemed to crush terrifying serpents hissing venom; their radiance dispelled masses of darkness, and their voices filled the forest ground with song. The women reach Rāma

पूजयन्त्यः पदाम्भोजैः प्रमोदवनभूतलम्। पूरयन्त्यः सौरभौघैः सहजैः काननावलीम्॥१०३॥
With their lotus feet they worshiped the ground of the Pramoda forest, and with floods of their natural fragrance they filled its rows of trees.
Passage 104
इन्दीवरमयं लोलनेत्रैः शृङ्गाररोचकैः। चन्द्रबिम्बमयं चारुमुखमण्डलकोटिभिः॥१०४॥
Their restless, love-radiant eyes made the forest a mass of blue lotuses, while their millions of lovely round faces made it a field of moon-discs.
Passage 105
राजहंसमयं मन्दक्वणत्पादाब्जनूपुरैः। कचैः केकिमयं चैव देहकान्त्या तडिन्मयम्॥१०५॥
The soft chiming of anklets upon their lotus feet filled it with royal swans; their tresses filled it with peacocks, and their bodily radiance with lightning.

फुल्लचाम्पेयकमयं समन्ताच्चन्द्रिकामयम्। स्वर्णद्रवमयं चैव कुर्वन्त्यः सर्वतो वनम्॥१०६॥
On every side they made the forest a mass of flowering campaka, moonlight, and flowing gold.
Passage 107
प्राप्तास्ताः सकला गोप्यः सहजानन्दिनीपतिम्। यद्वत्सुधातरङ्गिण्यः सुगम्भीरसुधाम्बुधिम्॥१०७॥
All the cowherd women reached Sahajānandinī’s beloved just as rivers of nectar enter a profoundly deep ocean of nectar.
Passage 108
श्रीरामदर्शनानन्दनिर्वृता हृष्टचेतसः। मध्ये प्रमोदविपिनं विरेजुर्व्रजयोषितः॥१०८॥
Fulfilled by the bliss of beholding Śrī Rāma and joyful at heart, the women of Vraja shone in the middle of the Pramoda forest.
Passage 109
तं वेष्टयित्वा रमणं सहजानन्दिनीवरम्। स्थितास्तमालप्रवरं सुवर्णलतिका इव॥१०९॥
They encircled that delightful Lord, the chosen beloved of Sahajānandinī, and stood like golden vines surrounding a splendid tamāla tree.

अनुजग्राह ताः सर्वाः प्रियस्त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरः। पीयूषवर्षणामन्दहासेनोद्दीपयन् दिशः॥११०॥
The beloved Lord, beauty of the three worlds, welcomed them all. His gentle smile rained nectar and illuminated every direction. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे दशरथतीर्थयात्रायामादि- व्रजागमने एकोनत्रिंशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः ॥ १२९ ॥ Thus ends Chapter 129, concerning the coming to original Vraja within Daśaratha’s pilgrimage, in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa in the venerable Ādi-Rāmāyaṇa.
