Sahajā and Rāma’s Union, and Kuśala’s Transformation

Sahajā reaches the Pramoda forest, where her companions unite her with Rāma and celebrate their intimate meeting. After the couple’s śṛṅgāra play, Sahajā returns to Taralā’s household and brings it extraordinary abundance. Taralā’s husband Kuśala beholds Sahajā beside Rāma, recognizes her as supreme Ramā, offers her to Rāma, and prays for a female devotional form. Rāma grants the boon, and Kuśala becomes the intimate cowherd companion Kuśalā by bathing in Sahajā-kuṇḍa. Sahajā approaches Rāma Sukaṇṭha said:

Passage 1

ततः सखीसमुदयहेममालिका समुल्लसत्पुरुरुचिरमध्यरत्नभाः। प्रकुर्वती प्रमुदवनं रुचाञ्चितं तदन्तिकं तरुणिवरा समाययौ॥१॥

Sahajā, the finest of young women, then approached him. Her gathering of companions formed a golden necklace around her, while she shone as its supremely beautiful central jewel and filled the Pramoda forest with radiance.

Passage 2

स दूरतो रसिकवरो निशाम्य तत्पदाम्बुजारणकहंसकध्वनिम्। वियोगजप्रचुरतरातिभेदिनीं तदा चिरादलभत मुत्परम्पराम्॥२॥

From afar the foremost connoisseur heard the swanlike music of the anklets at her lotus feet. It pierced the vast anguish born of separation, and after so long he attained an unbroken succession of joys.

Passage 3

ततश्च तत्तनुभवकल्पवल्लरीविनिःसरत्परिमलवाद् समीरणः। समन्ततः प्रसुमर आववौ भृशं स तस्य हृन्मुदमतुलामजीजनत्॥३॥

A breeze then blew abundantly on every side, carrying the fragrance issuing from the wish-fulfilling vine of her body. It produced incomparable delight within his heart. The forest celebrates the meeting

प्रमुदनं समजनि तत्समागमे महामहोत्सवनिवहस्य सूचकम्। निनादयन् मधुकरराजिवल्लकीं पिकस्वरैर्मुरजरवेण मिश्रिताम्॥४॥

At her arrival the Pramoda forest became a herald of a vast succession of festivals. Rows of bees sounded like lutes, mingled with the cuckoos’ voices and the resonance of drums.

Passage 5

अवादयत् समदमयूरझल्लरीर्वनस्थलीपरिहितपल्लवांशुका। महोरुहां शिरसि ननर्त मञ्जरी पुराङ्गनागण इवोदितातिसम्भ्रमः॥५॥

The forest ground, clothed in garments of tender leaves, set intoxicated peacocks sounding like cymbals. Flower clusters danced atop the great trees like city women overcome by the excitement of celebration.

प्रतानिनीसमुदितपौरकन्यका अवाकिरन् नवदलचीरभूषिताः। समन्ततो विकसितपुष्पलाजकैः समागतामुपसहजेश्वरीं सखीम्॥६॥

The spreading vines rose like city maidens dressed in garments of new leaves. On every side they showered the arriving Sahajeśvarī and her companions with puffed-rice offerings made of opened flowers.

Passage 7

ससुल्लसत्कुसुममरन्दधोरणीर्वहन् मुहुः कमलपरागरञ्जितः। समीरणः सपदि सिषेव तत्क्षणे वनस्थलीर्नवफलपुष्पभूषिताः॥७॥

The wind, repeatedly bearing streams of nectar from radiant flowers and colored by lotus pollen, immediately served the forest grounds, which were adorned with fresh fruits and blossoms.

Passage 8

ततश्च सा तस्य विलोचनातिथिर्बभूव बाला विदिता सखीगणे। प्रसूनिनीनां नवकुञ्जवीरुधां कदम्बके हेमलतेव पुष्पिणी॥८॥

The young woman then became a guest before his eyes, recognizable amid her circle of companions like a flowering golden vine among the blossoming creepers of a new bower. Rāma rises to receive Sahajā

तां वीक्ष्य सर्वावयवो विभूषितां समुत्थितोऽसौ रसिकेन्द्रशेखरः। चिरं तपत्तत्प्रभवातपाकुलो निकुञ्जशाखीव नवाम्बुदावलीम्॥९॥

Seeing every limb of hers beautifully adorned, that crown of connoisseurs rose. Long tormented by the heat born of her absence, he was like a bower tree beholding a bank of fresh rain clouds.

Passage 10

ननन्द तल्लोचनचातकद्वयी सुखान्यवापुः करणानि केकिनः। वपुर्लताभूत् पुलकाङ्कुराचिता विलोक्य तां गौरसुधाघनावलीम्॥१०॥

At the sight of that fair cloud bank of nectar, the pair of cātaka birds that were his eyes rejoiced, his peacocklike senses found delight, and the vine of his body became covered with shoots of horripilation. The companions unite the couple

Passage 11

मङ्गलामण्डलेश्वर्यौ संयोज्य रमणेन ताम्। अभूतां प्राप्तसर्वार्थे कृतकृत्ये इव द्रुतम्॥११॥

Maṅgalā and Maṇḍaleśvarī joined her with her beloved. At once the two companions seemed to have obtained every object and accomplished all that had to be done.

Passage 12

लुलिता पुरतस्तस्य ववन्दे द्रुतमेव सा। समञ्जुलैः स्मितैस्तासामुपकारममन्यत॥१२॥

Lulitā quickly bowed before him. With exceedingly lovely smiles, he acknowledged the service those companions had rendered.

स तां सर्वानवद्याङ्गीं सखीनां समुदायगाम्। आलिलिङ्ग दृशैवान्तरानन्दभरपूर्णया॥१३॥

He embraced with his very gaze the blameless-limbed Sahajā standing within the gathering of companions, his inner being completely filled with joy.

Passage 14

तावन्योन्यं निपीय प्रचुरमधुरिमो प्रेममाध्वीकसारं माद्यन्तौ मोदमानौ वचनरचनयान्योन्यमतृप्तिभाजौ। जातान्योन्यस्मिताद्रौ [रुचि]रुचिरभरोल्लासिनीं पुष्पशय्या- मध्यास्यातेनतुर्ष्णीभवकलुषहरालापलीलां किशोरौ॥१४॥

The two youths drank from one another the essence of love’s honey, rich with abundant sweetness. Intoxicated and rejoicing, they remained unsated by each other’s words. Their mutual smiles arose and overflowed with beauty; seated on the flower bed, they enjoyed playful conversation that removed the blemish of their long silence.

ननन्द तत्रोभयपक्षगामी सखीकलापो मिथुनं विलोक्य। भेजे च तत्तत्परिचर्यया तौ प्रसारिपुण्यातिशयेन युक्तः॥१५॥

The circle of companions belonging to both sides rejoiced there upon seeing the couple. Endowed with ever-expanding extraordinary merit, they attended the two lovers with their respective services. The companions serve the reunited couple

Passage 16

सखीनां सख्यविधयो दूतीनां दूत्यसत्क्रियाः। आसुस्तयोर्मिलितयोः कृतार्था इव तत्क्षणे॥१६॥

When the two lovers were united, the companions’ acts of friendship and the messengers’ honored services seemed at that very moment to have attained their purpose.

Passage 17

न बीजफलहारिण्या फलैः पाकमनोहरैः। स्वादुभिः सुरसैश्चैव कृतौ तौ सुहितौ हितौ॥१७॥

The attendant who carried fruits satisfied the beloved pair with fruits that were beautifully ripe, sweet, and full of juice.

अथाङ्गरागहारिण्या कस्तूरीकुङ्कुमादिभिः। कृतोऽङ्गरागः सरसस्ताभ्यां सम्यङ्निवेदितः॥१८॥

The attendant responsible for body unguents then prepared a delightful paste of musk, saffron, and other fragrances and properly presented it to the two.

Passage 19

धृतः स रामया सम्यक् सहजारामयोः स्तनौ। स तदङ्गातिसौरभ्यैर्दिग्गणं सुरभीकृतः॥१९॥

The fragrant paste was duly applied to Sahajā and Rāma. Enriched by the extraordinary fragrance of their bodies, it perfumed the entire circle of directions. Sahajā defeats Rāma at dice

Passage 20

ततः स्वस्वसखीवृन्दैः सहितौ विजयैषिणौ। द्यूतकेलिक्रियां सम्यक् चक्रतुः कुञ्जवेश्मनि॥२०॥

Then, each accompanied by their own circle of companions and eager for victory, Sahajā and Rāma began a proper game of dice within the bower-house.

Passage 21

तस्मिन् सञ्जायमाने तु द्यूतकेलिविधौ मिथः। सहजानन्दिनी दैवाद् विजिग्ये रामकामुकम्॥२१॥

As their mutual dice game unfolded, Sahajānandinī, through fortune, defeated her lover Rāma.

ततस्तदालिसन्दोहः सन्ददत् करताजिकाः। जहास रामचन्द्रं तं यस्य द्यूते विनिर्जयः॥२२॥

Her gathering of companions clapped their hands and laughed at Rāmacandra, who had been thoroughly defeated at dice.

Passage 23

दीयतां नः पणो राम यथैवात्र प्रतिश्रुतः। दिशो विलोकयन्नूर्ध्वं किमास्से केलिपण्डित॥२३॥

They said, “Rāma, give us the stake exactly as you promised. Expert in play, why do you sit looking upward in every direction?”

Passage 24

सख्य ऊचुः अहो अस्माकमीशोऽयं रामः पद्मजलोचनः। जये पराजये वापि तुल्य एव न संशयः॥२४॥

Rāma’s companions said, “Ah, our lord Rāma, whose eyes are lotuslike, remains exactly the same in victory or defeat—there is no doubt.

Passage 25

भवेदुभयथाप्यस्य जय एव न संशयः। जये स्यादुपरि प्रेष्ठो नीचैश्च सहजा भवेत्॥२५॥

“Either result is surely a victory for him. If he wins, the beloved will be above and Sahajā below.”

Passage 26

पराजये उपर्या नो नीचैरस्माकमीश्वरः। इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तासां सहजानन्दिनी स्वयम्॥२६॥

“And if he loses, she will be above and our lord below.” Sahajānandinī herself heard this teasing claim of theirs.

Passage 27

किञ्चिदाकुञ्चितभ्रूस्ताः सासूयं वक्त्रमैक्षत। जघान च भुजं गौरी लीलाकुसुमकन्दुकैः॥२७॥

The fair one slightly contracted her brows, looked jealously toward their faces, and struck an arm with playful flower balls.

Passage 28

अहो अलीकभाषिण्यः स्वैरमालपथ ध्रुवम्। इत्युक्त्वा पुनरप्येषा प्रेयसा द्यूतमारभत॥२८॥

“Oh, speakers of falsehood, you certainly chatter as you please!” Saying this, she began another dice game with her beloved. Sahajā wins a second game

Passage 29

जिगाय सहजानन्दा प्रेयांसमतिदक्षिणा। सख्यः पुनरपि प्रेयानेवास्माकं विनिर्जितः॥२९॥

The exceedingly clever Sahajānandā defeated her beloved. Her companions exclaimed, “Once again our dear one has been completely defeated!”

Passage 30

जये स्यादुपरीत्यादि गाथाः सम्यगगायत। पुनस्ताः केलिपद्मेन जघान सहजेश्वरी॥३०॥

They properly sang the verses beginning, “If he wins, he will be above.” Sahajeśvarī again struck them with a play lotus.

Passage 31

अथ ताः सहजासख्यः प्रोचुः शुचिस्मिताः। वारद्वयं जितोऽसि त्वं सख्यास्माकं सुलोचन॥३१॥

Sahajā’s companions, smiling brightly, then said, “Beautiful-eyed one, our friend has defeated you twice.

Passage 32

प्रतिश्रुतं पणं देहि पूर्वस्माद् द्विगुणं प्रिय। नो चेदेनां नमस्कृत्य निस्तीर्णो भव तं पणम्॥३२॥

“Beloved, pay the promised stake at twice its former amount. Otherwise, bow to her and thereby become free of that debt.”

प्रियसख्य ऊचुः युष्माकं स्वामिनी सख्यो विह्वलीकृत्य नः प्रियम्। मुहुर्विजयते किन्तु नैष न्यायः सनातनः॥३३॥

The beloved’s companions said, “Friends, your mistress repeatedly wins only after making our beloved lose his composure. This is not the eternal rule of fair play.

Passage 34

चतुरङ्गवती सेना मदनस्येयमूर्जिता। अस्त्रशस्त्रसमुद्रेकवती नित्यं जयत्यसौ॥३४॥

“She is the powerful fourfold army of Love, bristling with every kind of weapon. Such an army naturally wins forever.

Passage 35

जहार हृदयं पूर्वं ततश्च नयनद्वयम्। ततो हृतवती धैर्यं विजयेनैव वः सखी॥३५॥

“First your friend stole his heart, then both his eyes, and afterward his steadiness. Only by those victories has she won this game.

Passage 36

तथापि पश्यथेदानीं विजयं नः प्रभोरपि। एकस्मिन्नेव वारेऽसौ हारयिष्यत्यमुं प्रियः॥३६॥

“Even so, now behold our lord’s victory. In a single round the beloved will make her lose.”

Passage 37

सोत्कर्षमित्युक्तवतीं प्रियालीमधिक्षिपन्ती व्रजराजकन्या। विलोकमाना कुटिलैः कटाक्षैर्व्यताडयत् केलिसरोरुहेण॥३७॥

The daughter of Vraja’s king rebuked the beloved’s companion who had spoken so proudly. Casting crooked sidelong glances, she struck her with a play lotus. Rāma’s party wins a round

अथैका प्रेयसो नर्मसचिवा दक्षिणा सखी। द्यूतकेलिक्रियानन्या जिगाय सहजासखीम्॥३८॥

Then one clever companion, an intimate counselor of the beloved and unsurpassed in the art of dice play, defeated Sahajā’s companion.

Passage 39

ततः प्रियसखीवर्गः सोत्कर्षं करताजिकाः। ददौ जहास चातीव जयोऽस्माकं प्रभोरिति॥३९॥

The beloved’s party proudly clapped their hands and laughed greatly, crying, “The victory belongs to our lord!”

Passage 40

अथ मालाकरी चित्रां पञ्चवर्णप्रसूनकैः। वैजयन्तीमानिनाय द्वयोः परिहितिक्षमाम्॥४०॥

The garland-maker then brought a splendid victory garland formed of flowers in five colors, suitable to be worn by the two together.

ताम्बूलहारिणी हैमं ताम्बूलामत्रमानयत्। ततश्च लोलनयने नौविकां पर्यधात् प्रिये॥४१॥

The betel attendant brought a golden betel vessel and, with restless eyes, served the two beloveds. The companions withdraw from the inner bower

सद्यः सख्यो विनिर्याता निकुञ्जभवनाद्बहिः। ततः स्वैरमभूत्केलिः स्वयं यत्र मनोभवः॥४२॥

The companions at once departed from the bower-house. The lovers’ play then became entirely free, in a place where Love himself was present.

Passage 43

प्रेमैवाभवदुद्वेल आनन्दामृतसागरः। आविरासुर्भावमयास्तरङ्गास्तत्र निर्भरम्॥४३॥

Love itself became a swelling ocean of the nectar of bliss. Waves made wholly of sacred emotion arose there in overwhelming abundance.

Passage 44

कटाक्षदोलिताक्षेपप्रसाराकुञ्चनादिभिः। लोभयन्तो मनस्तस्य प्रेमराज्यमवर्धयत्॥४४॥

The movements, extensions, and contractions of her eyes, swaying with sidelong glances, enticed his mind and expanded the dominion of love.

Passage 45

पूर्वं प्रदर्श्य दौर्लभ्यं मुहुरास्वादयद्रसम्। इति दाक्षिण्यमासाद्य स्मरकेलीमरोचयत्॥४५॥

Having first displayed reserve, she repeatedly savored the rasa. Then, adopting tenderness and compliance, she made the play of Love shine forth.

Passage 46

स्वैरं विहरतोः कुञ्जे या शोभा समभूत्तयोः। सा सुधासारिणीवात्ता सखीलोचनभाजनैः॥४६॥

The beauty that arose while the two sported freely in the bower was received by the vessels of the companions’ eyes like a flowing stream of nectar.

Passage 47

कुञ्जवातायनपथप्रसारितदृगञ्चलाः। सख्य आस्वादयाञ्चक्रुर्माधुरीं रसवारिधेः॥४७॥

Extending the tips of their glances through the bower windows, the companions tasted the sweetness of that ocean of rasa. The river of intimate play

Passage 48

नानाबन्धनिबन्धनाधरसुधास्रोत्कारमिश्रालक- स्तोमाकर्षणघर्षणाङ्गवलनासम्मर्शनस्पर्शनैः। अन्योन्यं रुचिदर्शनैर्मुकुरगस्वाङ्गावलोकोद्भव- प्रोत्साहैः सुरतक्रिया सरिदिव प्रावर्ततावर्तिनी॥४८॥

With varied embraces and bonds, streams of nectar from their lips, the drawing and mingling of loosened locks, the turning, caressing, and touching of limbs, their vision of one another’s beauty, and the encouragement born of seeing themselves reflected in each other, the current of intimate play began to flow like a river filled with eddies.

Passage 49

रतिप्राज्यानन्दं ददति सहजायां प्रियतमे मुदा सख्यः सर्वाः स्तिमितहृद आसन् पुलकिताः। पयोधारासारैर्जलधरं वर्षति यथा लतायां पत्राणि स्फुटमुपलभन्ते मुदमलम्॥४९॥

As beloved Sahajā bestowed the abundant bliss of love, all the companions stood joyfully still at heart, their bodies thrilled. They were like the leaves of a vine that plainly attain perfect delight when a rain cloud pours down streaming water.

Passage 50

यत्सामरस्यपरमानन्दं प्रकृतिपुरुषौ। निषेवेते तदप्यस्य परानन्दोपजीवकम्॥५०॥

Even the supreme bliss of harmony enjoyed by Prakṛti and Puruṣa draws its life from the transcendent bliss of this union.

Passage 51

श्रीरामे पुरुषोत्तमे सहजया साकं जुषत्यद्भुतं निःसीमरति सामरस्यपरमानन्दं निकुञ्जान्तरे। जाताकस्मिकमोदसिन्धुलहरीसन्दोहमग्नात्मनां त्रैलोक्यस्य नृणामभून्निरवधिः प्रेमोदयः क्षेमदः॥५१॥

When Śrī Rāma, the Supreme Person, enjoyed with Sahajā within the bower the wondrous, boundless supreme bliss of love’s harmony, the beings of the three worlds were suddenly immersed in hosts of waves from an ocean of joy. An unending, auspicious awakening of love arose within them.

Passage 52

सर्वात्मना यः समभूत्प्रयत्नः सखीजनस्य प्रियमेलनाय। कृतार्थतामाप स तावदद्धा तस्मिन् प्रजाते सुरतप्रसङ्गे॥५२॥

Every effort the companions had made with their whole being to unite the beloved pair now truly reached fulfillment when their intimate meeting arose. The companions share in the couple’s bliss

Passage 53

स्त्रीभिः स्त्रीणां वीक्ष्य पुम्भिः प्रसङ्गं चित्तेष्वमर्षो जायते स्वाभिलाषात्। तासामासीत् सहजायां रतायां रामेणान्तःप्रीतिराश्चर्यमेतत्॥५३॥

Ordinarily, when women see another woman united with a man, jealousy arises in their hearts from personal desire. Yet when Sahajā delighted with Rāma, these companions felt inward joy—this was wondrous indeed.

Passage 54

एक एव रतानन्दः सहजाचित्तगोचरः। विभक्त इव सर्वासु सखीषु समजायत॥५४॥

The single bliss of love manifest within Sahajā’s heart appeared as though distributed among all her companions.

Passage 55

मञ्जीरध्वनिभिः कर्णौ त्वक् तदङ्गानिलस्पृशा। चक्षुषी सुरतक्रीडारूपसारविलोकनात्॥५५॥

Their ears were fulfilled by anklet sounds, their skin by the breeze that had touched the lovers’ limbs, and their eyes by beholding the essential beauty of their intimate play.

Passage 56

जिह्वा युगलनामैकरसानन्दानुभूतितः। नासा तदङ्गसौरभ्यैरेवं सर्वेन्द्रियव्रजः॥५६॥

Their tongues were fulfilled by experiencing the single blissful rasa of the couple’s names, and their noses by the fragrance of the lovers’ limbs. In this way the whole company of their senses found satisfaction.

Passage 57

सखीनां निर्वृतिं प्राप मनोमिलनतस्तयोः। रामायाः सख्यघटना कृतार्थत्वमियाय च॥५७॥

The companions attained fulfillment through the mental union of the two, and Rāmā’s work of arranging their companionship achieved its purpose.

Passage 58

अहो लोकोत्तरगुणग्रामराशी उभावपि। इमौ परस्परोचित्यात् सार्थरूपौ बभूवतुः॥५८॥

“Ah, both are repositories of hosts of qualities beyond this world. Through their perfect fitness for one another, the very forms of both have attained their full meaning.”

Passage 59

त्रैलोक्येऽस्याः समुचितवरालाभोद्भवाः शुचः। अशेषाश्च रामचन्द्रे सहयोगमुपागते॥५९॥

All the grief caused by Sahajā’s inability to find a suitable bridegroom anywhere in the three worlds vanished when Rāmacandra became her partner.

Passage 60

यत्तासामवलोकनेन सुरतक्रीडारसं तन्वती किञ्चिच्चेतसि सञ्चुकोच सहजानन्दा प्रियस्याङ्कगा। तद्भूयः सुषमामवाप दधती तुल्यौ त्रपामन्मथौ तेनातीव बभूव सौख्यजनिकापश्यत्सखीनेत्रयोः॥६०॥

When Sahajānandā, seated upon her beloved’s lap and extending the rasa of their intimate play, noticed the companions watching, she drew inward a little. Bearing modesty and love in equal measure, she thereby attained still greater beauty and became an intense source of delight for the companions’ eyes.

Passage 61

तस्याः सुरतकालीनकण्ठकोमलकूजितम्। हन्तानुकर्तुं नाशक्नोत् कुञ्जपारावतीकुलम्॥६१॥

Alas, even the flock of doves in the bower could not imitate the tender cooing of her voice during love’s play.

Passage 62

कदा पश्येम युगलमेकदेशस्थितं रहः। एषोऽधुनाभवत् पूर्णः सखीलोकमनोरथः॥६२॥

The companions had long desired, “When shall we see the couple together in one secluded place?” That cherished wish was now fulfilled.

Passage 63

इदमनुदिनमुत्तमं सुखं यः पिबति जनो रसिकः श्रवःपुटाभ्याम्। स भवति रसिकेन्द्ररामचन्द्रप्रणयरसोदधिवीचिभिर्निषिक्तः॥६३॥

The connoisseur who drinks this supreme delight day after day through the vessels of the ears becomes bathed in the waves of the ocean of loving rasa belonging to Rāmacandra, the lord of connoisseurs. Sahajā speaks to her companions

Passage 64

इत्थं विहृत्य रसिकेन्द्रशिरःकिरीटरत्नोत्तमेन रमणेन रसज्ञमौलिः। व्यत्यस्तजातरमणाभरणाभिरामारामादिभिः प्रियसखीभिरिदं बभाषे॥६४॥

After thus sporting with her beloved—the finest jewel in the crown of the lords of rasa—Sahajā, herself the crown of those who know rasa, spoke to her dear companions headed by Rāmā, whose ornaments had become charmingly disarrayed. The companions lovingly tease Sahajā

Passage 65

चातुर्यं सखि विस्मृतं सकलमप्यासीस्त्वमत्युद्धता प्राणेशि प्रणयात् प्रियेण सह सङ्गम्यासि सक्तत्रपा। एतत्ते नयनद्वयं कथयति व्यक्तं रते निर्भरं प्रातर्मत्तमिलिन्दनर्ममरुणाम्भोजं विजेतुं क्षमम्॥६५॥

“Friend, you have forgotten all your cleverness, though you were once so bold. Mistress of our lives, after meeting your beloved in love, you are now filled with modesty. Yet your two eyes plainly reveal the depth of your love; they could conquer the red lotus teased at dawn by intoxicated bees.

Passage 66

काचित्सखी लतां वीक्ष्य सहजावृत्तमब्रवीत्। भ्रूसंज्ञया सखीमन्यां सूचयन्ती रहोगताम्॥६६॥

One companion looked toward a vine and described Sahajā’s secret experience, signaling its meaning to another companion with a movement of her brows.

सखि विदलिता मल्ली मत्तालिना मदशालिना प्रतिदलमियं धत्ते तेजाङ्कुरोद्गममीदृशम्। विकसितलसत्पुष्पश्रेणी विस्फोटनतः स्फुटं मधुरसझरीवर्षैरार्द्रीकृत्याधिगता तनुः॥६७॥

“Friend, this jasmine has been opened by a proud, intoxicated bee. Every petal bears the marks of that radiant bursting forth. Its body, with rows of opened, shining flowers, has plainly been drenched by showers from streams of sweet nectar.

Passage 68

अस्याः पुष्पान्तराले मधुकरतरुणः कोऽपि केलीं चकार प्रेक्षा पत्रोपरिस्थश्चिरतरमपिबन्मोदमानो मरन्दम्। क्रीडन् रागात् परागारुणरुचिचरणन्यासचिह्नानि कुर्वन् स्नेहेनात्तोऽनयापि प्रणयपरवशस्वान्तया सादरं सः॥६८॥

“A certain young bee played among her flowers. Standing upon a leaf, he joyfully drank nectar for a long time. As he sported passionately, he left footprints glowing red with pollen, and the vine—her heart overcome by love— received him affectionately and with honor.

Passage 69

क्रीडां क्वाप्येष कुर्वन् कमलवनपरागैः सरागं शरीरं बिभ्रत् प्राप्तस्ततोऽस्यां कलितविहरणः स्वेच्छया भूरिभावः। तत्सम्पर्कादसावप्यतिशयितमिमं रागमङ्गे दधाना किञ्चित्कम्पाकुलाङ्गी विरचयति चमत्कारमन्तर्ममालि॥६९॥

“This bee came here after playing elsewhere, his body reddened by pollen from a lotus grove, and sported freely with abundant feeling. Through contact with him, this vine too bears an intensified passion in her body; her limbs tremble a little and awaken wonder within me, friend.

Passage 70

एनां वीक्ष्योत्सुका अन्या अपि कुञ्जलताः सखि। आलिङ्ग्य भूरुहां शाखाश्चलन्त्यः किञ्चिदासते॥७०॥

“Seeing her, friend, the other bower vines have also grown eager. Embracing the branches of trees, they remain there softly trembling.

Passage 71

अपरोवाच साकूतमन्यां सखि विलोकय। मलयानिलमालिङ्ग्य स्वैरमङ्कुरिता लता॥७१॥

Another companion spoke suggestively: “Friend, look at this other vine. After embracing the Malaya breeze, it has freely put forth new shoots.

Passage 72

आलिङ्गन् कुञ्जलतिकाः समोदो मलयानिलः। अत एव व्रजत्येष मन्दं मन्दं मदान्वितः॥७२॥

“The delighted Malaya breeze embraces the bower vines. That is why it now moves so slowly, filled with intoxication.”

Passage 73

एवमन्योन्यमालप्य सहजारामयोर्मनः। मन्दाक्षवशगं कृत्वा सख्यस्ताः पुनरब्रुवन्॥७३॥

Speaking playfully to one another in this way, the companions made the hearts of Sahajā and Rāma submit to bashfulness. Then they spoke again.

Passage 74

अलं वां लज्जयास्मासु नर्मज्ञासु विशेषतः। भवतोः केलिचातुर्यं वीक्ष्यान्तर्मुदिता वयम्॥७४॥

“Enough of this modesty before us, for we are especially well versed in intimate play. Having seen the skill of you two in love, we rejoice inwardly.

Passage 75

भवतोर्नित्यसंयोगं वाञ्छामः प्रेमसुन्दरम्। वयमेतस्य तत्त्वज्ञाश्चन्द्रस्येव चकोरिकाः॥७५॥

“We desire your beautiful, eternal union in love. We know its truth like cakorī birds know the moon.” Sahajā returns to Taralā’s household

Passage 76

सुकण्ठ उवाच ततस्ता राममामन्त्र्य सख्यः सहजया सह। मुदा भद्रवटं जग्मुर्ध्यायन्त्यः प्रियसङ्गमम्॥७६॥

Sukaṇṭha said: “The companions then took leave of Rāma and joyfully went with Sahajā to Bhadravaṭa, meditating upon the meeting of the beloved pair.

Passage 77

कामराजं समापूज्य स्वागतां सहजेश्वरीम्। तरला नाम गोपाली जग्राह परमोत्सवैः॥७७॥

After worshiping King Love, the cowherd woman named Taralā welcomed the returning Sahajeśvarī with the highest celebrations.

Passage 78

अर्घ्यपूर्वकमानीय विशालभुवनान्तरे। तरला सहजानन्दां गृहलक्ष्मीममन्यत॥७८॥

Bringing Sahajānandā into the spacious house with an offering of arghya and other honors, Taralā regarded her as the Lakṣmī of the household.

Passage 79

अथ तद्दिनमारभ्य तरलाया निकेतने। अभूत्प्रभूतं सौभाग्यं धनं धान्यं दिने दिने॥७९॥

From that day onward, abundant good fortune, wealth, and grain increased day by day within Taralā’s residence.

Passage 80

आरोग्यं बहुलं भोग्यं सर्वदा सर्वसम्पदः। स्वजनानां प्रसादश्च स्वाज्ञावर्तित्वमेव च॥८०॥

There were abundant health and enjoyments, every kind of prosperity at all times, the goodwill of their relatives, and willing obedience to the household’s direction.

Passage 81

दासानां चैव दासीनां शोभावृद्धिस्ततुश्रिया। पुरन्ध्रीजनगीतेन सदाकौतुकमुच्चकैः॥८१॥

By that divine fortune, the beauty of male and female servants increased, and the loud songs of the household women kept celebration alive at all times.

Passage 82

गवां वत्सतरीणां च वत्सानां चेन्दुवर्चसाम्। सम्पत्तिः परमा जाता वृषाणां च सुरोचिषाम्॥८२॥

Supreme abundance arose among the cows, heifers, moon-bright calves, and radiantly beautiful bulls.

Passage 83

तस्य देशस्य परितो वनं सर्वसमृद्धिमत्। सर्वर्तुसुखदं जातं पत्रपुष्पफलाढ्यम्॥८३॥

The forest surrounding that region became rich in every abundance, pleasant in all seasons and laden with leaves, flowers, and fruit.

Passage 84

यत्र श्रीसहजेश्वर्या गोधनं हरितैस्तृणैः। सुहितं सर्वदा भूयः प्रीतियुक्तं प्रजायते॥८४॥

There the cattle belonging to glorious Sahajeśvarī were always well satisfied by green grasses and became ever more contented and affectionate.

Passage 85

अवाप्य तरला गोपी स्वगृहेऽनन्यगां श्रियम्। सहजायां प्रीतिमती विशेषेण बभूव ह॥८५॥

Having attained incomparable prosperity in her home, the cowherd woman Taralā became especially loving toward Sahajā. Kuśala beholds Rāma by the Sarayū

Passage 86

यस्या गृहपतिस्तत्र कुशलो नाम गोपतिः। दैवात् पौरुषहीनोऽभूद्रामभक्तिपरायणः॥८६॥

Taralā’s husband was a cowherd lord named Kuśala. By fate he lacked male potency, yet he was wholly devoted to Rāma.

Passage 87

स एकदा वने रामं क्रीडन्तं सखिभिः सह। ददर्श सरयूतीरे तरङ्गानिलसेवितम्॥८७॥

One day in the forest he saw Rāma playing with his companions on the bank of the Sarayū, attended by the breeze from its waves.

Passage 88

विभ्राजं च धनुर्बाणधरं पद्मविभूषितम्। महामाणिक्यमुकुटं महार्हतनुभूषणम्॥८८॥

Rāma shone holding bow and arrows and adorned with lotuses, wearing a crown of great jewels and immensely precious ornaments upon his body.

Passage 89

पीताम्बरपरीधानं वनमालाधरं विभुम्। नवनीलघनाकारं मञ्जुलस्मितभूषितम्॥८९॥

The Lord wore yellow garments and a forest garland. His form resembled a fresh dark-blue cloud, and he was adorned by a charming smile. Kuśala beholds Sahajā beside Rāma

Passage 90

आबद्धरत्नरसनं महार्हाङ्गदशोभितम्। मुक्तासारधरं कर्णस्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलम्॥९०॥

Rāma wore a jeweled girdle and shone with precious armlets. Strands of pearls adorned him, and makara-shaped earrings flashed at his ears.

Passage 91

लोलालकावलीमध्यविस्फुरन्मुखपङ्कजम्। तद्वामपार्श्वे च ततो ददर्श सहजेश्वरीम्॥९१॥

His lotus face shone amid rows of swaying curls. Kuśala then saw Sahajeśvarī standing at Rāma’s left side.

Passage 92

साक्षात्पूर्णमहालक्ष्मीं पूर्णसर्वगुणान्विताम्। पूर्णेन्दुवदनद्योतां पूर्णलावण्यवारिधिम्॥९२॥

She was directly the complete Mahālakṣmī, endowed with every virtue in fullness, her face shining like the full moon and her being a complete ocean of beauty.

Passage 93

यत्तेजसाखिलं व्याप्तं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्। अस्याः कलां जुषन्तेऽन्याः रतिप्रमुखयोषितः॥९३॥

Her radiance pervaded all three worlds, moving and unmoving. Other women, beginning with Rati, possessed only a portion of her splendor.

Passage 94

यस्या अंशांशसम्भूतिस्तडित्सूर्यकलानिधौ। तां तथा रामपार्श्वस्थां दृष्ट्वातीव सुविस्मितः॥९४॥

Lightning, the sun, and the moon arose from mere fractions of fractions of her. Seeing her thus beside Rāma, Kuśala became utterly astonished.

Passage 95

तुष्टाव विविधैर्वाक्यैः परमैश्वर्यभावितः। पूर्वभावविनिर्मुक्तो भावान्तरमुपेयिवान्॥९५॥

Filled with awareness of her supreme sovereignty, he praised her in many statements. Freed from his former conception, he entered an entirely new state of understanding. Kuśala praises Sahajā’s supreme identity

Passage 96

कुशल उवाच त्वं रमा परमा कान्तिस्त्वं देवि जगदीश्वरी। तवानन्दकलां स्पृष्ट्वा सानन्दाः सर्वयोगिनः॥९६॥

Kuśala said: “You are Ramā, the supreme radiance; Goddess, you are the sovereign of the universe. By touching but a portion of your bliss, all yogis become filled with joy.

Passage 97

त्वं वेदमाता विदिता सर्वविद्याधिदेवता। त्वां परावरभावेशीं विज्ञायासौ विमुच्यते॥९७॥

“You are known as the mother of the Veda and the presiding deity of every branch of knowledge. A person becomes liberated by knowing you as the sovereign of all higher and lower states of being.

Passage 98

गायत्री चैव सावित्री त्वमेव परमेश्वरी। यया ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च नीतौ स्वाधीनतां स्वयम्॥९८॥

“You alone are Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, and the Supreme Goddess. By you, Brahmā and Viṣṇu themselves have been brought under your power.

Passage 99

त्वमेव सिद्धजननी सिद्धानां विदुषामपि। वन्दनीयतमा नित्यं सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायिनी॥९९॥

“You alone are the mother of perfection. Even perfected and learned beings must worship you eternally, for you bestow every spiritual accomplishment.

Passage 100

त्वमेव कल्पान्तकरालमूर्तेर्ज्वालावली भीमजटाधरस्य। रुद्राणि रुद्रस्य वधूः स्वरूपानुरूपरूपा प्रलयाग्निजिह्वा॥१००॥

“You are the garland of flames belonging to the terrible, matted-haired form at the end of an aeon. As Rudrāṇī, the bride of Rudra, your form corresponds to his own, and you are the tongue of the fire of dissolution.

Passage 101

कलाकाष्ठादिरूपेण त्वं कालावयवेश्वरी। कालयस्यखिलं विश्वं स्वस्मिन्नारोप्य सन्ततम्॥१०१॥

“In the forms of kalā, kāṣṭhā, and the other divisions of time, you are the sovereign of time’s components. You continually draw the entire universe into yourself through time.

Passage 102

न ते तत्त्वं विजानन्ति ब्रह्माद्या अपि देवताः। प्रवृत्ताः स्वाधिकारेषु मोहितास्तव मायया॥१०२॥

“Even the gods beginning with Brahmā do not know your truth. Deluded by your māyā, they remain engaged within their respective domains of authority.

Passage 103

त्वं मुक्तिरानन्दकदम्बकाढ्या निःशेषदुःखानुभवेन शून्यम्। स्वरूपशुद्धं स्वधिकृत्य जीवं स्थिता निरूप्या निगमान्तभागैः॥१०३॥

“You are liberation, filled with clusters of bliss. Establishing the soul in its pure essential nature, empty of every experience of suffering, you abide as described in the concluding portions of the Vedas.

Passage 104

त्वं ज्ञानरूपासि मुनीश्वराणां करोषि चेतः स्वत एव शुद्धम्। सूक्ष्मार्थसन्दर्शनशक्तिरूपा त्वमेव देवर्षिकृतप्रतिष्ठा॥१०४॥

“You are the form of knowledge for the greatest sages, spontaneously making their minds pure. You alone are the power that reveals subtle meanings and the foundation honored by the divine seers.

Passage 105

यदेतद् व्यजृम्भत आविरञ्चिस्तम्भादितो विश्वमशेषमेव। तस्मिन्नुपादानतया प्रविष्टा त्वामेव सर्वत्र विलोकयन्ति॥१०५॥

“This entire universe has expanded from Brahmā down to a blade of grass. Since you have entered it as its material cause, the wise behold you everywhere within it.

Passage 106

त्वां नारदाद्या ऋषयो विशेषाद् भक्तिस्वरूपां समवाप्य मातः। श्रीरामचन्द्रप्रियतामवाप्य जयन्ति सर्वोपरिवर्तमानाः॥१०६॥

“Mother, sages beginning with Nārada specially realize you as the very form of devotion. Attaining dearness to Śrī Rāmacandra, they triumph while abiding above all others.

Passage 107

रामचन्द्रोऽसौ विदितः स्वरूपाद् रामो रमा तस्य परप्रतिष्ठा। त्वं देवि सद्यो विदिताभयेति निषेवणीयौ सततं भवन्तौ॥१०७॥

“Rāmacandra is known by his own essential nature as Rāma, and Ramā is his supreme foundation. Goddess, recognizing you two in this way immediately dispels fear; therefore both of you must be served forever.

Passage 108

भवतोर्नामरूपाभ्यां जगदेति कृतार्थताम्। इतश्च भवतोर्लोके आविर्भावो विराजते॥१०८॥

“Through your two names and forms the world attains fulfillment. For this reason your manifestation shines within the world.

Passage 109

इति मे समभूज्ज्ञानं कृपया तव भाविनि। न चेन्मादृशजीवानां क्व ज्ञानकलिकोदयः॥१०९॥

“O loving goddess, this understanding has arisen within me through your grace. Without it, how could even a bud of knowledge awaken in creatures such as me?

Passage 110

अद्यावधि सदा भूयात्तव भक्तिर्दिने दिने। विवर्धमाना हृदये प्रेमाख्या भवरूपिणी॥११०॥

“From this day forward, may devotion to you always grow day by day within my heart, taking the form of divine emotion known as love. Kuśala offers Sahajā to Rāma

Passage 111

आस्वादार्थं रसराजस्य मातः श्रीरामेणाकारि योगो मया ते। नो चेत्साक्षात्पूर्णपत्नी रमाख्या त्वं कस्य जायासि विना रमेशम्॥१११॥

“Mother, your union with Śrī Rāma has been made for the tasting of the King of rasa. Otherwise, you are directly the complete consort named Ramā—whose wife could you be apart from the Lord of Ramā?

Passage 112

यद्दौर्लभ्यं स्यात्परायत्तता च पराकाष्ठा रसराजस्य सौर्या। तदर्थेनं प्रभुणाकारि योगो विज्ञातं ते कृपया तत्त्वमेतत्॥१२२॥

“Whatever reserve, dependence upon another, and ultimate extremity of heroic love may belong to the King of rasa—for that purpose the Lord has established this union. By your grace I have understood this truth.”

Passage 113

अथ प्रभो राम साक्षात्प्रमोदाटविकलानाथ वदाम्यहं त्वाम्। इयं श्रीसन्नन्दनेनेह मह्यं दत्ताहं ते नाथ सपर्ययामि॥११३॥

“Now, Lord Rāma, direct master of the arts of the Pramoda forest, I speak to you: glorious Sannanda gave this Sahajā to me here, and I now offer her in service to you, my Lord.

Passage 114

त्वद्रूपसौन्दर्यमिदं निरीक्ष्य न कस्य पुंसोऽपि मनो विमुह्येत्। स्त्रीभावमासादयितुं च रन्तुमुत्कण्ठितं स्यात्कोटिकन्दर्पजैत्रैः॥११४॥

“Seeing this beauty of your form—which conquers millions of Cupids—what man’s mind would not be enchanted and become eager to attain a woman’s devotional identity so as to sport with you?

Passage 115

अतोऽहं प्रार्थये तुभ्यं यथा स्त्रीरूपमाप्नुयाम्। तवाधरसुधां नाथ पिबेयं तापमोचनीम्॥११५॥

“Therefore I pray to you that I may attain a woman’s form and drink the nectar of your lips, Lord, which frees one from torment.”

Passage 116

इत्युक्त्वा कुशलो गोपः पादयोरपतज्जवात्। परार्धरतिकन्दर्पमोहिनोर्युगलात्मनः॥११६॥

Having spoken thus, the cowherd Kuśala quickly fell at the feet of the divine couple, who enchant countless Ratis and Cupids. Rāma grants Kuśala’s prayer

Passage 117

रामस्तमुत्थाप्य भृशमालिलिङ्ग दयानिधिः। अब्रवीच्चास्मितोद्द्योतरञ्जिताधरमण्डलः॥११७॥

Rāma, the treasury of compassion, raised Kuśala and embraced him tightly. Then he spoke, the circle of his lips colored by the radiance of his smile.

Passage 118

धन्योऽसि मम भक्तोऽसि पूर्णस्तव मनोरथः। अनन्यप्रेमवृत्त्या ते वशितोऽस्मि न संशयः॥११८॥

“You are blessed; you are my devotee, and your heart’s desire is fulfilled. By the course of your exclusive love, I have been brought under your power— there is no doubt.

Passage 119

मद्रूपं वीक्ष्य गोपाल कस्य नो सुमितं मनः। साक्षादमूमुहन् विप्रा दण्डकारण्यवासिनः॥११९॥

“Cowherd, whose discerning mind would not be enchanted upon seeing my form? The brāhmaṇa sages dwelling in the Daṇḍaka forest were directly captivated by it.

Passage 120

तेषां कामज्वरं वीक्ष्य तदा दत्तो मया वरः। तत एव हि मां नित्यं भजन्ति स्त्रीस्वरूपतः॥१२०॥

“Seeing the fever of their desire, I granted them a boon. For that reason they now worship me eternally in female forms.

Passage 121

वेदाश्च पृष्ठगा वीक्ष्य मत्स्वरूपं मनोहरम्। मुमुहुस्तेन ते नित्यं स्त्रियो भूत्वा भजन्ति माम्॥१२१॥

“The Vedas, following behind, likewise beheld my enchanting form and became captivated. Therefore they too became women and worship me eternally.

Passage 122

त्वं तु गोपवर प्रेम्णा विरहज्वरपीडितः। निमज्ज्य सहजाकुण्डे स्त्रीरूपं समवाप्स्यसि॥१२२॥

“You, best of cowherds, are afflicted by the fever of separation born of love. By immersing yourself in Sahajā-kuṇḍa, you will attain a woman’s form.

Passage 123

ततो नित्यं मया साकं विहरिष्यसि रात्रिषु। दिवसे तु सखा तद्वत् पुरुषः पश्यतां नृणाम्॥१२३॥

“Thereafter you will sport with me eternally during the nights. By day, before the eyes of people, you will again be a male companion.

Passage 124

मम लीलापरिकरे सखीभावमुपेष्यसि। त्वमेवाद्य मत्समीपमानेष्यसि मम प्रियाम्॥१२४॥

“Within the retinue of my divine play you will attain the identity of a female companion. From this day it is you who will bring my beloved to my side.” Kuśala becomes the companion Kuśalā Sukaṇṭha said:

Passage 125

इत्थं तस्मै गोपवराय रामो वरं दत्त्वा भूरिभावज्ञोऽपि। तेनैव साकं विजहाराभिनव्यप्रियाभावं कृपया प्रापितेन॥१२५॥

Having granted this boon to the excellent cowherd, Rāma—knower of innumerable divine emotions—then sported with Kuśala, who by grace had attained the fresh identity of a beloved companion.

Passage 126

स निमज्ज्य प्रेममये सहजाकुण्डपाथसि। बभूव रतिचार्वङ्गी कुशला नाम गोपिका॥१२६॥

Immersing himself in the love-filled waters of Sahajā-kuṇḍa, Kuśala became a beautiful-limbed cowherd woman named Kuśalā.

Passage 127

सखी चक्रगता प्रेष्ठा रामस्य सुखवर्धिनी। यथाकामं विहृत्येषा पुरुषो भवति क्षणात्॥१२७॥

She entered Rāma’s circle of companions as a most beloved friend who increased his happiness. After sporting as desired, she could become a man again in an instant.

Passage 128

अविचिन्त्या करुणा तस्य प्रभोर्लीला रसात्मनः। अगोचरो मुनीनां यः क्रीडति व्रजदारकैः॥१२८॥

Inconceivable is the compassion of that Lord, whose divine play is made of rasa. Beyond the perception of sages, he sports with the young people of Vraja. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे पूर्वखण्डे दशरथतीर्थयात्रायाम् आदिव्रजे सप्तविंशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः॥ १२७ ॥ “Thus ends Chapter 127, concerning original Vraja within Daśaratha’s pilgrimage, in the Pūrva-khaṇḍa of the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.” Source control note Chapter 127 occupies registered source leaves 895–905 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 896–906). It begins below the Chapter 126 colophon on physical page 896 and contains 128 independent passage units. Chapter 128 begins on physical page 907. The edition prints the independent unit at sequence position 112 as passage 122, then returns to 113; the later, genuine passage 122 is also printed as 122. The earlier duplicated 122 is preserved in its Sanskrit line and registered editorially as passage 112, yielding the continuous presentation 1–128 without inventing or suppressing any text. All eleven source pages were reviewed directly against the scan in batches of no more than two rendered pages, and the English is a fresh translation from the scan-controlled Sanskrit.
