Chapter context and opening material

Maṅgalā reveals that the Pramoda forest has been transformed for Sahajā and Rāma’s meeting, with all six seasons present at once. Maṇḍaleśvarī promises to conceal their love, and Maṅgalā recites Rāma’s songs of the seasons. Rāma’s poetry gives way to longing until Lulitā arrives carrying the flower ornaments he fashioned for Sahajā and his urgent message. Sahajā adorns herself and leaves for the rendezvous. Maṅgalā describes the transformed Pramoda forest Maṅgalā said:

Passage 1

“Victory, victory to you, Sahajeśvarī! For your play, the Pramoda forest shines in a charming form, perfectly fashioned at once by Spring, your excellent servant, like a play-cloth painted by Citralekhā. Its astonishing multitudes of trees are canopied by the moon; cuckoos call from vines hanging upon mango trees heavy with blossoms; and streams of pollen racing from kadamba flowers rise like smoke, making the blazing kiṃśukas appear as flames from the fierce fire of Love’s bow.

Passage 2

“It glitters with rows of fully blossomed bakula, nāga, punnāga, hintāla, palm, and tamāla trees embraced by swaying clove vines. Herds of deer play in joy upon hearing the high humming of restless hosts of bees. Dust rising from ketakī groves veils the quarters like the road-dust of the many horses in Love’s parasol-bearing army, while vañjula branches set with jewel-like clusters of blossoms and green leaves gleam beside ever-exultant campakas.

Passage 3

“The courtyards of its bowers blaze beneath masses of new sapphire light mingled with the brilliance of excellent emeralds, cat’s-eye gems, and garuḍa-stones. Ruby-and-pearl platforms, expansive cloudlike pavilions, and clusters of moons shine within. Drifting streams of pollen from delighted full-blown lotuses variegate the many ponds, where descending lines of royal swans cry amid the calls of cuckoos; every creature, rich with earthly feeling, awakens as though pierced by Love’s arrows.

Passage 4

“Here one vine-woman shines with tall swaying flower clusters for breasts; another wears as a braid a line of excellent bees flying from lotuses; another, longing only to behold Rāma’s face, has intoxicated bees stilled like unblinking pupils within her star-bright flower eyes. One glows with a smile of open flowers, another with red bimba-fruit lips of tender leaves, another with a parrot-beak nose and great pearl-like mṛdvī fruits, and another with soft feet ankleted by pairs of maddened kadamba birds calling at her roots. Thus they shine like women in the courtyard of a pleasure palace.

The edition prints passages 1–114 in a continuous sequence. Chapter 127 begins below the Chapter 126 colophon on the final physical page. The edition’s footnote beneath passage 4 states that the Rewa witness lacks the text from that point through passage 109. The complete printed text is retained from the primary 1975 edition; within that witness gap, especially in the dense sound-play of the six-season songs, the English resolves only what the immediate syntax and narrative securely support. All ten source pages were reviewed directly against the scan in batches of no more than two rendered pages, and the English is a fresh translation from the scan-controlled Sanskrit.
