Daśaratha asks how Rāma, whom he knows as supreme Brahman, enters the confidential sweetness of apparently unconventional love. Rāma explains rasa and the supremacy of śṛṅgāra; Sukaṇṭha then relates Sahajā’s wondrous birth, Śiva’s visit in a young ascetic’s guise, and her revelation of the eternal Pramoda forest and her circle of companions. Daśaratha asks about the secret love The king said:

Passage 1

सहजानन्दिनी धन्या धन्यं तस्याः कुलं महत्। अवाप बहुभाग्येन रामस्य पदवीं यतः॥१॥

“Sahajānandinī is blessed, and blessed is her great lineage, for through abundant good fortune she attained the intimate station belonging to Rāma.

Passage 2

जानामि तत् परं ब्रह्म राम इत्याख्यया भुवि। प्रसिद्धं मम धाम्नैव योगिनामपि दुर्लभम्॥२॥

“I know that supreme Brahman, known upon earth by the name Rāma, manifest in my very dwelling yet difficult even for yogins to attain.

Passage 3

श्रीरामो रामचन्द्रो हरिरित्युक्त ईदृशैः। नामभिः कुरुते देवः सतां चित्तस्य पावनम्॥३॥

“By such names as Śrī Rāma, Rāmacandra, and Hari, the Lord purifies the hearts of the virtuous.

करोमि किं समक्षं मे तस्य पुत्रेति भावना। बहुधा विनयं दृष्ट्वा पितृभक्तिसुसन्धिं ध्रुवम्॥४॥

“What am I to do? When he stands before me, I think of him as my son, seeing his constant humility and firm, well-established devotion to his father.

Passage 5

असमक्षं तस्य मम माहात्म्यरस्फूर्तिरद्भुता। ब्रह्मैव पूर्णमेतद्देह इति प्रत्याययत्यलम्॥५॥

“When he is out of my sight, the wondrous manifestation of his majesty fully convinces me that this embodied form is none other than the complete Brahman.

Passage 6

इदानीं तस्य मे भावो ब्रह्मेत्येव महादृढः। तेन त्वां परिपृच्छामि रहस्यमपि तत्कृते॥६॥

“Now my conviction that he is Brahman has become utterly firm. Therefore I ask you even about this secret concerning him.

Passage 7

सहजानन्दिनी येयं प्रिया तस्य प्रकीर्तिता। औपपत्यं कथं तस्या गर्हितं लोकवेदयोः॥७॥

“Sahajānandinī is proclaimed to be his beloved. How can her paramour-love, which worldly and Vedic convention condemn, be reconciled with him?

Passage 8

इति मे संशयं छिन्धि भवान् श्रीरामसेवकः। त्वदन्यो रामलीलाया रहस्यज्ञो न विद्यते॥८॥

“Dispel this doubt of mine. You are Śrī Rāma's servant, and apart from you no one knows the secret of Rāma's divine play.” Sukaṇṭha introduces Rāma's teaching Sukaṇṭha said:

रसस्य परमा काष्ठा रामेणैवोदिता नृप। प्रमोदवनवीथीषु साक्षाद्विहरता स्वयम्॥९॥

“King, the supreme summit of rasa was revealed by Rāma himself as he directly roamed the pathways of Pramoda forest.

Passage 10

एवमेव महाराज तमपृच्छमहं प्रभुम्। स मे यदुक्तवान् रामस्तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भूपते॥१०॥

“Great king, I asked the Lord this very question. I shall tell you what Rāma said to me.” Rāma defines rasa Rāma said:

सखे सुकण्ठ लीला मे रसरूपा न संशयः। रसो नाम ममैवात्मा चिदानन्दमयो ध्रुवम्॥११॥

“My friend Sukaṇṭha, my divine play is certainly formed of rasa. What is called rasa is assuredly my own essential self, made of consciousness and bliss.

यद्ब्रह्म परमं पूर्णं सच्चिदानन्दमूर्जितम्। रस एव तदेतद्धि महाभावैकगोचरः॥१२॥

“That complete supreme Brahman, powerful with being, consciousness, and bliss, is itself this rasa, accessible only through mahābhāva.

Passage 13

रस्यमानतया लोके रस इत्युच्यते बुधैः। परब्रह्मस्वरूपज्ञैर्मुनिभिस्तत्त्ववेदिभिः॥१३॥

“Because it is savored, the wise call it rasa—sages who know reality and the essential nature of the supreme Brahman.

वात्स्यायनश्च भरतः शाण्डिल्यो व्यास एव च। नारदो भृगुरेवापि भगवान् चतुराननः॥१४॥

“Vātsyāyana, Bharata, Śāṇḍilya, Vyāsa, Nārada, Bhṛgu, and the four-faced Lord Brahmā—

एते चान्ये च मुनयो रसशास्त्रविशारदाः। अग्निश्च भगवान् साक्षाद्वीतिहोत्रस्त्रयीमयः॥१५॥

“these and other sages are expert in the science of rasa, as is the divine Agni himself, Vītihotra, embodiment of the three Vedas.

रसस्य वस्तुतो रूपं जानात्येवेति निश्चयः। शृङ्गारादिविभेदेन बहुधाख्यायते तु सः॥१६॥

“They truly know rasa's essential nature. It is described in many forms, distinguished as śṛṅgāra and the other rasas.

सर्वेषामपि भेदानां शृङ्गारः प्रवरो मतः। संभोगविप्रलम्भेन द्विधासौ परिकीर्तितः॥१७॥

“Of all these divisions, śṛṅgāra is held to be foremost. It is proclaimed to be of two kinds: union and separation.

कामिनी कामुकश्चैव तस्यालम्बनतां गतौ। उद्दीपनानि बहुशो वासन्तीकोकिलादयः॥१८॥

“The loving woman and the loving man serve as its supporting subjects, while springtime vines, cuckoos, and many similar things serve as stimulants.” The nature and savoring of rasa

वासन्ती विकसत्पुष्पमरन्दद्रवनिर्झरा। कोकिला कोमलालापकाकलीकलितस्वरा॥१९॥

“A springtime vine flowing like a cascade with the liquid nectar of opening flowers, and a cuckoo whose voice is formed of soft, melodious calls—

चन्द्रिका चञ्चुरानेकचकोरचटुकारिणी। लतामण्डप आनन्दी मत्तालिकुलनादितः॥२०॥

“moonlight that makes the beaks of countless cakora birds chatter, and a delightful vine pavilion resonant with intoxicated swarms of bees—

इत्यादयोऽखिला भावास्तस्योद्दीपनतां गताः। कामिनी परकीयेव कामुकश्चौपपत्यभृत्॥२१॥

“all such conditions become stimulants for śṛṅgāra. The woman appears as one belonging to another, and her lover bears the role of paramour.

Passage 22

इत्याज्ञा रसशास्त्रस्य जानन्ति किल कोविदाः। रसस्यैव स्वभावोऽयं नात्र शङ्का विधीयताम्॥२२॥

“Such is the authoritative teaching of the science of rasa, as the learned know. This is rasa's own nature; no doubt should be entertained about it.

वस्तुनो यस्य यो धर्म औत्पत्तिक उदीरितः। स एव वस्तुनस्तस्य स्वभाव इति कीर्तितः॥२३॥

“Whatever property is declared to arise intrinsically with a thing is called that very thing's essential nature.

भजन्ते मम येऽतीव प्रिया आस्वादकोत्तमाः। ते मां रसस्वरूपेण नान्ये साधारणा जनाः॥२४॥

“Those supremely dear devotees of mine who are the finest savorers worship me in my form as rasa; ordinary people do not.

Passage 25

रसानन्दस्वरूपां मे लीलां माधुर्यवारिधेः। तामास्वाद्य पुनर्नैव विषयानवगाहते॥२५॥

“Having savored my divine play—formed of the bliss of rasa and an ocean of sweetness—one never again plunges into material sense objects.

एक एव शुभः पन्था अत्र साधनसाध्ययोः। इति मत्वा सुखी भूयाः सुकण्ठ मम पार्षदः॥२६॥

“Know that here there is a single auspicious path in which practice and goal are one. Sukaṇṭha, be joyful as my intimate attendant.

Passage 27

इति श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य पूर्णस्य परमात्मनः। तत्त्वतो रूपमाख्याय न मुह्यासि कदाचन॥२७॥

“Having thus been told the true nature of Śrī Rāmacandra, the complete supreme Self, never again fall into confusion.” Daśaratha asks for Sahajā's life The king said:

जन्मकर्म च मे ब्रूहि सहजायाः पराश्रय। पितरौ कथमानन्दयते कथं भूषयते कुलम्॥२८॥

“Supreme refuge, tell me of Sahajā's birth and deeds: how she delighted her parents and how she adorned her lineage.

Passage 29

कथं च व्रजराजस्य राजधानीं व्यभूषयत्। कथं मोदयते रामं प्रमोदवनकेलिषु॥२९॥

“How did she adorn the capital of the king of Vraja, and how does she delight Rāma in the plays of Pramoda forest?” Sahajā's birth on Vasanta Pañcamī Sukaṇṭha said:

माघस्य धवले पक्षे पञ्चमी शिवयोगिनी। पूर्वभाद्रपदायुक्ता शुभक्षेत्रग्रहतारका॥३०॥

“It was the blessed fifth lunar day of Māgha's bright fortnight, joined with Pūrva Bhādrapadā under auspicious planetary and stellar conditions.

Passage 31

वसन्तपञ्चमीत्युक्ता सा तिथिर्विश्वमङ्गला। यस्यां रतिपतिः कामः पुरा प्रादुरभूत्किल॥३१॥

“That universally auspicious date is called Vasanta Pañcamī, upon which Kāma, lord of Rati, is said to have appeared in ancient times.

तस्यां संजातमात्रायां कालोऽभूच्छुभलक्षणः। दिशः प्रसन्ना अभवन् सद्यो जनितमङ्गलाः॥३२॥

“The instant she was born, the time displayed auspicious signs. The directions at once became serene and produced blessings.

Passage 33

आनन्दस्पर्शकृद्वातो ववौ मलयवृक्षजः। रमणीयतमा भूमिरभूदानन्दवर्धिनी॥३३॥

“A wind born among the trees of Malaya blew with a joy-giving touch, and the earth became exquisitely lovely, increasing everyone's bliss.

Passage 34

अकस्मादवधल्लक्ष्मीः प्रतिग्रामव्रजाकरम्। स्वर्गे मर्त्ये च पाताले तूर्यत्रिकभवः स्वनः॥३४॥

“Prosperity suddenly increased in every village and cowherd settlement, while the sound of threefold celestial music arose in heaven, on earth, and in the netherworld.

Passage 35

आनन्दयति चेतांसि तस्मिन्नवसरे नृप। श्रीनन्दनो गोपराजः पालीग्रामपतिः स्वयम्॥३५॥

“At that heart-delighting moment, king, Śrī Nandana—the cowherd king and lord of Pālī village—

स्वस्ति विप्रान् वाचयित्वा जातकं समकारयत्। शुभाशिषो वाचयन्तो विप्राः संजातकौतुकाः॥३६॥

“had the brāhmaṇas pronounce blessings and prepare the child's horoscope. The brāhmaṇas, filled with celebration, recited auspicious benedictions.

Passage 37

आययुर्नन्दनागारं कन्यारत्ने समुद्गते। सूताश्च मागधाश्चैव वन्दिनश्च शुभान्विताः॥३७॥

“When this jewel of a daughter arose, auspicious heralds, bards of Magadha, and panegyrists came to Nandana's residence.

Passage 38

विप्राः पौराणिकाः शास्त्रविद्याजीवाः सहस्त्रियः। ज्योतिर्विदो बुधाचार्या आर्याः सर्वकलाविदः॥३८॥

“Brāhmaṇas, reciters of the Purāṇas, masters of scriptural learning with their wives, astrologers, wise teachers, and noble experts in every art arrived.

Passage 39

नरा नर्त्यो गायकाश्च वादका नायकाश्च ये। नन्दनस्य गृहे तैस्तैः संमर्दः सुमहानभूत्॥३९॥

“Men, dancers, singers, instrumentalists, and their leaders created a great festive crowd in Nandana's house.

Passage 40

गोपा गोप्यश्च ननृतुः समस्त्यक्तेतरत्रपाः। तेभ्यो वासांसि भूषाश्च हिरण्यं विपुलं ददौ॥४०॥

“Cowherd men and women danced, setting aside every other inhibition. He gave them garments, ornaments, and abundant gold.

Passage 41

सुश्लोक इति विख्यातोऽभवच्छ्रीनन्दनो नृपः। कन्यारत्नं प्रजातन्तु श्रुत्वा श्रीसुखितो नृपः॥४१॥

“King Śrī Nandana became renowned for his noble fame. Hearing that this jewel of a daughter had been born, King Śrī Sukhita—

रत्नानि वर्षन् घनवत् पालीग्रामं समाययौ। एवमानन्दसंपन्नं जन्म कृत्वा सुखान्वितः॥४२॥

“came to Pālī village showering jewels like a raincloud. Her birth thus filled everyone with joy and happiness.

Passage 43

कन्याया नन्दनो गोपो यशः प्राप जगत्त्रये। ततश्च सहजेत्याख्या तस्याः मुनिगणैः कृता॥४३॥

“Through his daughter the cowherd Nandana attained fame throughout the three worlds. The assembled sages then gave her the name Sahajā.

Passage 44

रूपं वेशो वयः शीलं सर्वं हि सहजं यतः। एवं संजातजन्माया श्रीनन्दनगृहान्तरे॥४४॥

“For her beauty, dress, age, and character were all natural and spontaneous. Thus she took birth within Śrī Nandana's household.” The motionless infant

दिवसेषु प्रगच्छत्सु लावण्यमपुषत्तनौ। परं न भाषते किंचिन्न च पश्यति किञ्चन॥४५॥

As the days passed, loveliness increased in her body; yet she spoke nothing and looked at nothing.

Passage 46

न शृणोति न चाश्नाति नेङ्गते न च रिङ्गति। दृष्ट्वावस्थां स्वकन्याया गोपालो भयशङ्कितः॥४६॥

She did not listen or eat, did not move or crawl. Seeing his daughter's condition, the cowherd became frightened and anxious.

Passage 47

किमेतदस्याः संजातं जाड्यं सर्वेषु वस्तुषु। प्रेतावेशो भयं वापि कृत्रिमं वापि केनचित्॥४७॥

“What has caused this insensibility toward everything? Is it possession by a spirit, some terror, or an artificial affliction made by someone?

Passage 48

दृष्टिर्वा मुष्टिघातो वा चलदोषोऽपि वाभवत्। यक्षरक्षःपिशाचादिच्छाया च दुर्ग्रहोऽथ वा॥४८॥

“Was she struck by an evil glance or occult fist, or has some wandering fault arisen? Is it the shadow or malignant seizure of a yakṣa, rākṣasa, piśāca, or some other being?

Passage 49

प्रतिकर्तुं न शक्नोमि मन्त्रज्ञैरपि सिद्धिजैः। किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कश्चित् सिद्धो मिलेदपि॥४९॥

“I cannot counteract it even with accomplished knowers of mantras. What shall I do and where shall I go? If only I might meet some perfected adept—

Passage 50

यो मे कन्यामहारत्नं प्रकृतिस्थं करिष्यति। तस्मिन्नेवान्तरे रुद्रो द्रष्टुं श्रीसहजेश्वरीम्॥५०॥

“one who could restore this great jewel of a daughter to her natural state.” At that very time Rudra, desiring to behold Śrī Sahajeśvarī— Śiva receives Rāma's direction

उपेतः परया भक्त्या व्रजभूमिं समाययौ। तत्र श्रीसुखितागारे दोलन्तं सिक्यमध्यतः॥५१॥

came to the land of Vraja in supreme devotion. At Śrī Sukhita's residence he saw Rāma swinging in a suspended cradle—

व्रजस्त्रीगणमध्यस्थं रामं द्रष्टुमुपागतः। विधाय योषितो वेषं शिवः परमया मुदा॥५२॥

surrounded by the women of Vraja. Śiva had assumed a woman's dress and approached with supreme joy to see him.

Passage 53

संपन्नश्यामवपुषं रामचन्द्रमुपैक्षत। तत्र कृत्वा स्वरैर्गानं मूर्च्छनावृन्दमञ्जुलम्॥५३॥

He gazed upon Rāmacandra's perfect dark form and sang there in notes made lovely by a multitude of melodic modulations.

Passage 54

प्रेष्ठं प्रसादयामास रामं राजीवलोचनम्। प्रसन्नं समभिज्ञाय रामं त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरम्॥५४॥

He pleased his dearest lotus-eyed Rāma. Recognizing that Rāma, beauty of the three worlds, was graciously satisfied—

भूयो विज्ञापयामास सहजादर्शनाय च। तमुवाच स्मयन् रामो गच्छ श्रीनन्दनालयम्॥५५॥

he petitioned once more for the sight of Sahajā. Rāma smiled and told him, “Go to Śrī Nandana's residence,

यत्र ते सहजानन्दा स्वयं दास्यति दर्शनम्। ततो नत्वा जगन्नाथं रामचन्द्रमहानिधिम्॥५६॥

“where Sahajānandā herself will grant you her vision.” Bowing to Rāmacandra, Lord of the world and great treasury of all riches—

शिवः संप्रस्थितस्तस्मात्पालिग्रामं समाययौ। वटुवेषधरो विप्रो वसानो हरिणाजिनम्॥५७॥

Śiva departed and came to Pālī village, appearing as a young brāhmaṇa student clad in a deerskin. The disguised brahmacārī enters Nandana's house

Passage 58

कौपीनधारो जटिलः कक्ष्याविन्यस्तपुस्तकः। धृताषाढः पूततनुर्मौञ्जीमेखलयान्वितः॥५८॥

He wore a loincloth and matted locks, carried a book tucked beneath his arm and a staff, and his pure body was girdled with a muñja-grass belt.

Passage 59

प्रसन्नवदनाम्भोजस्तपसा प्रज्वलन्निव। तं विलोक्य ततो लोकाः पालीग्रामनिवासिनः॥५९॥

His lotus face was serene and he seemed to blaze with ascetic power. Seeing him, the inhabitants of Pālī village—

महासिद्ध इति ज्ञात्वा गोपराजं न्यवेदयन्। एष विप्रवरोऽस्माकं प्रतिभाति तपोनिधिः॥६०॥

recognized him as a great adept and informed the cowherd king: “This excellent brāhmaṇa appears to us to be a treasury of austerity.

Passage 61

एनं प्रदर्शय सुतां गोपराज त्वमात्मनः। अयमस्या वपुःस्तम्भं मन्त्रवीर्येण सिद्धिमान्॥६१॥

“Cowherd king, show him your daughter. By the power of his mantras this accomplished one can remove the paralysis of her body—

Passage 62

नाशयिष्यति हस्तं च धास्यत्यस्यास्तनोः शुभम्। इत्युक्त्वा गोपराजाय वटुरन्तः प्रवेशितः॥६२॥

“and place his beneficent hand upon her body to destroy it.” After they spoke thus to the cowherd king, the young ascetic was brought inside.

Passage 63

दूराद्विलोक्य गोपेन्द्रो नमश्चक्रे महावटुम्। पाद्यार्घाचमनीयाद्यैः संपूज्य कृतशक्तितः॥६३॥

Seeing the great young ascetic from afar, the cowherd lord bowed and worshiped him to the best of his ability with water for the feet, arghya, water for sipping, and other offerings.

Passage 64

उवाच निजकन्याया वृत्तं जाड्यादिकं च यत्। तमुवाच स्मयन् विप्रः समानय सुतां निजाम्॥६४॥

He described his daughter's condition and her insensibility. The brāhmaṇa smiled and said, “Bring your daughter—

मह्यं प्रदर्शय ततो ज्ञास्यामि यदि कारणम्। कूटं मन्त्रं तथा दृष्टिं मुष्टिं प्रेतादिभिः कृतम्॥६५॥

“and show her to me. Then I shall determine whether its cause is malicious magic, a mantra, an evil glance, an occult blow, or the work of spirits and other beings.

Passage 66

तत्सर्वं नाशयिष्यामि कन्यां मे दर्शय प्रभो। एकान्ते तमथो नीत्वा श्रीनन्दन उदारधीः॥६६॥

“I shall destroy all of it. Lord, show me the maiden.” Noble-minded Śrī Nandana then led him to a private place—

राज्ञ्यङ्कगतां कन्यां वटुवेषे न्यवेदयत्। वटुर्विलोक्य तां बालां स्मयन्तीं मधुराननाम्॥६७॥

and presented to the disguised student the maiden seated upon the queen's lap. The student saw the sweet-faced child smiling—

श्रीरामवल्लभां बुद्ध्वा मुमोद हृदये निजे। उवाच गोपराजं स एनां दत्त्वा करे मम॥६८॥

and knew her to be Śrī Rāma's beloved, rejoicing within his heart. He said to the cowherd king, “Place her in my hands—

गच्छ गोपेन्द्र दूरे त्वं सभार्यः सहभृत्यकः। प्रयोगं मम मन्त्राणां पश्य त्वं व्रजभूपते॥६९॥

“and withdraw some distance with your wife and attendants. From there, cowherd king, observe the application of my mantras.

Passage 70

स्तम्भमस्या हरिष्यामि तद्धेतुं च निवेदये। इत्युक्तो नन्दनः कन्यां समर्प्य बटवे ततः॥७०॥

“I shall remove her immobility and reveal its cause.” Told this, Nandana entrusted the maiden to the young ascetic.” Śiva beholds Sahajā

Passage 71

दूरं जगाम विश्वस्तो मुहूर्तं स्वजनैः सह। तामेकान्तगतां दृष्ट्वा सहजां रामरागिणीम्॥७१॥

Trusting him, Nandana withdrew far away for a moment with his family. Seeing Sahajā alone, filled with love for Rāma—

Passage 72

रमणीमौलिमुकुटरत्नभूतां प्रभावतीम्। तुष्टाव मधुरैर्वाक्यैः सूक्तिभिः पार्वतीपतिः। ऋग्यजुःसामोपनिषत्सारैः सूक्तैः सुभाषितैः॥७२॥

the Lord of Pārvatī praised that radiant jewel crowning all women with sweet words and well-spoken hymns containing the essence of the Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma, and Upaniṣads. Śiva's hymn to Sahajā Śiva said:

Passage 73

नमस्ते रामरामायै रमायै रमणात्मने। स्वेच्छाविलासनिधये प्रमोदवनदेवते॥७३॥

“Homage to you, Rāma's delight, Ramā herself, the very self of the lover; treasury of play arising from your own freedom, deity of Pramoda forest.

Passage 74

नमः स्वेच्छाविहारिण्यै स्वेच्छाप्रकटवर्ष्मणे। स्वेच्छाविमोचिताशेषप्रसन्ननिखिलात्मने॥७४॥

“Homage to her who sports by her own free will, whose body is manifested by her own will, and who by that free will liberates all and brings serenity to every soul.

Passage 75

परमात्मा त्वमेवात्र जीवानां बुद्धिसाक्षिणी। अनन्तन्ती त्वमभिचाकशीति भवतो परा॥७५॥

“You alone are the supreme Self here, witness of the intellects of living beings. Beyond all becoming, you shine forth as the infinite one.

Passage 76

तव स्वरूपं महिमार्णवायितं सच्चित्सुखैकात्मतया प्रसिद्धिमत्। अतन्निरासेन वदन्ति वैदिको गिरस्ततो नेति नेतीति चोचुः॥७६॥

“Your essential nature is an ocean of majesty, renowned as the single reality of being, consciousness, and bliss. Vedic utterances describe it by rejecting what it is not, and therefore declare, ‘Not this, not this.’

यत्ते महत्त्रिगुणकेलिकलातिगं तद्- विज्ञाय चित्तकमले विदुषां वरेण्याः। भूयो भवन्ति भववेदनया न विघ्ना मग्नाः सुखामृतपयोनिधिवीचिकासु॥७७॥

“The foremost of the wise realize within the heart-lotus your greatness, which transcends the play and arts of the three guṇas. Immersed in the waves of the nectarean ocean of bliss, they are never again obstructed by the pain of worldly existence.

Passage 78

कोऽन्यो विहाय भवतीं शरणं नृणां स्यात् संसारतापनिवहेन निपीडितानाम्। गच्छन्त्यतो ननु भवच्छरणं विमुक्ति- कामाः कृपाजलनिधे सुखमाप्नुवन्ति॥७८॥

“Apart from you, who else could be the refuge of people tormented by the mass of worldly afflictions? Therefore those desiring liberation approach your refuge, ocean of compassion, and attain happiness.

Passage 79

एकैव च त्वं वचनैरनेकैर्निरूप्यसे सद्भिरनन्तबोधा। वेदेषु शास्त्रेषु पुराणवाक्येष्वखण्डवाक्यार्थतया प्रतिष्ठिता॥७९॥

“You are one and possess infinite consciousness, yet the virtuous describe you in many statements. In the Vedas, śāstras, and words of the Purāṇas you stand as their single, undivided purport.

Passage 80

त्वं प्रमोदवननिकेतनस्था श्रीरामचन्द्रं रमयत्युदारैः। वेदत्रयोद्गीततमैरनन्तैर्गुणैर्महाभव्यगुणाधिवासे॥८०॥

“Dwelling in Pramoda forest, you delight Śrī Rāmacandra through your boundless, exalted qualities, supremely praised by the three Vedas; you are the abode of the most magnificent virtues.

Passage 81

निरतिशयकृपासुधाम्बुराशे मधुरिमनिर्झरिणीरसैकधारे। अनुपमगुणरामणीयकाढ्ये जय जय जाग्रदमन्दमङ्गलेशि॥८१॥

“Ocean of unsurpassed nectar-like compassion, sole current of the river of sweetness and rasa, rich in incomparable virtues and beauty—victory, victory to you, ever-awakened sovereign of unbounded auspiciousness!

Passage 82

दरिद्रं दुःशीलं दुरधिगमनं दुःखदलितं दुराचारं दूरे पतितमितरैर्दुर्भरतरम्। जनैर्मुक्तं मुक्तिप्रमुखसुखसंपत्समुदयाः पुमांसं सेवन्ते भगवति भवद्दृष्टिभरितम्॥८२॥

“A person may be impoverished, ill-natured, inaccessible, crushed by sorrow, immoral, fallen far away, unbearable to others, and abandoned by society; yet, divine Lady, when filled with your glance, that person is attended by the arising wealth of liberation and every other happiness.

Passage 83

दयादृष्टिर्मातर्जयति तव सर्वाधिकगुणा दृढानप्युद्धर्तुं प्रभवति भवाम्भोधिरयतः। न सांख्यं नो योगो न च तप उदग्रं न सुकृतम्। फलत्यद्धा तद्वद्दुरधिगममाहात्म्यजलधे॥८३॥

“Mother, supreme over every virtue is your compassionate glance, powerful enough to lift even the most hardened from the ocean of becoming. Neither Sāṃkhya, yoga, severe austerity, nor meritorious action bears fruit so directly, o ocean of unfathomable majesty.

Passage 84

असंख्यब्रह्माण्डप्रकटनपटुर्यत् कमलभू- रपेन्द्रोऽयं नानादनुजकुलसंहारणविधौ। महारुद्रो रुद्रः सकलजगतां संवृतिविधौ तदेतन्माहात्म्यं तव जननि पादाब्जरजसः॥८४॥

“That lotus-born Brahmā can skillfully manifest countless universes, Indra can destroy hosts of demons, and great Rudra can withdraw all worlds—Mother, all this is the majesty of the dust of your lotus feet.

Passage 85

निगूढं सेवन्ते चरणकमलं मङ्गलतमं वरेण्या विद्वांसो विगतगुणसङ्गाः सुकृतिनः। लभन्ते ते तस्मात्कलितजनकल्याणनिवहाः प्रभूतं सामर्थ्यं भवजलधिसंतारविषये॥८५॥

“The foremost learned and virtuous ones, free from attachment to the guṇas, secretly serve your supremely auspicious lotus feet. From them they gain great power to carry assembled beings across the ocean of becoming.

Passage 86

ते द्वारवत्यां महनीयशीले मनोजचारित्रकलाविदुष्यो। पूर्वाभवन् भामिनि सत्यभामा परा च सा रुक्मिणीति प्रसिद्धा॥८६॥

“Radiant Lady of exalted character, in Dvārakā your manifestations formerly appeared, accomplished in lovely conduct and arts: one renowned as Satyabhāmā and another as Rukmiṇī.

Passage 87

अन्याश्च ता मित्रविन्दादयो या वन्दारुवृन्दारकदारवन्द्याः। मातस्त्वदंशा अखिलार्थपूर्णाः कृष्णस्य चित्तं सुखयन्त्यथो किम्॥८७॥

“Mitravindā and the other women, worshiped by hosts of celestial ladies, are your all-perfect portions, Mother. Is it any wonder that they delight Kṛṣṇa's heart?

Passage 88

सा त्वं प्रमोदविपिनेऽत्र विभासि नित्यं कल्याणकल्पतरुसर्वगुणाभिरामा। निर्णीयसे त्वमत एव सुधीभिरद्धा तन्त्रेषु चापि निगमेषु च चित्कलेति॥८८॥

“You shine eternally here in Pramoda forest, lovely with every virtue of the wish-fulfilling tree of auspiciousness. Therefore the wise ascertain from both Tantras and Vedas that you are the power of consciousness.

Passage 89

तवानन्तकलां मातरुपजीवन्ति सर्वशः। स्वर्गापवर्गानन्दानां ये नित्यमधिकारिणः॥८९॥

“Mother, all who eternally possess a claim to the joys of heaven and liberation live entirely by your infinite power.

Passage 90

एतावदेव जननि स्पृहणीयमर्थं त्वं पूरयिष्यसि मम त्रिजगत्पवित्रे। रूपेण येन जयसि प्रमुदाटवीस्था रूपं तदेव जय दर्शय देवि मह्यम्॥९०॥

“Mother who purifies the three worlds, fulfill this one cherished desire of mine: victorious goddess, show me that very form in which you triumph while dwelling in Pramoda forest.” Śiva asks to see Sahajā's Pramoda-forest form

Passage 91

रामं प्रमोदवनशारदपूर्णचन्द्रं सा त्वं चकोरयसि येन कलागुणाढ्या। तत्ते स्वरूपमखिलागमवागगम्यं नूनं सुदुर्लभतरं विदुषां मुनीनाम्॥९१॥

“Rich in arts and virtues, you make Rāma—the full autumn moon of Pramoda forest—your cakora bird. That form of yours, reached by the words of all the Āgamas, is surely exceedingly difficult even for learned sages to attain.

Passage 92

तन्मह्यमद्य ननु दर्शय दिव्यदिव्यं केलीकलाकलितसल्ललनाललामम्। त्रैलोक्यदेवनरकिन्नरनागकन्यासौन्दर्यसारसमुदायमयं स्वरूपम्॥९२॥

“Show me today that divinest form, crown of noble women accomplished in the arts of play, formed from the gathered essence of the beauty of divine, human, kinnara, and nāga maidens throughout the three worlds.

Passage 93

प्राप्तोऽस्म्यहं सुखितगोपगृहे ततश्च श्रीरामचन्द्रकरुणामधिगम्य मातः। तातस्य ते परमभाग्यसमूहसिन्धोः श्रीनन्दनस्य गृहमेव समागतोऽस्मि॥९३॥

“Mother, I first reached the cowherd Sukhita's house and obtained Śrī Rāmacandra's compassion. From there I came to the very home of your father Śrī Nandana, an ocean of accumulated supreme fortune.

Passage 94

त्वद्दर्शनं प्रमुदकाननसच्चकोरीनेत्रेषु सौभाग्यकरं सुलभं च तेषु। अत्यन्तदुर्लभतरं जगतीतरेषां लब्धुं समागत इहास्मि सदैकभक्तिः॥९४॥

“The sight of you bestows good fortune and comes readily to the cakora-like eyes of Pramoda forest's true companions, yet it is exceedingly rare for all others in the world. I have come here to obtain it in single, constant devotion.

Passage 95

जानीहि मां जननि तावकपादपद्मप्रोदञ्चदच्छमकरन्दसमूहभृङ्गम्। संत्यक्तसर्वविषयग्रहलालसं ते नित्यं प्रपन्नमथ नामपरं त्रिनेत्रम्॥९५॥

“Mother, know me as a bee drinking the pure nectar rising from your lotus feet, three-eyed yet devoted to your name, eternally surrendered to you and having abandoned every craving to grasp sense objects.

Passage 96

सहजे सहजानन्दे सहजानन्दिनि प्रिये। इति ते नामपीयूषं रामस्य वदनाच्च्युतम्॥९६॥

“‘Sahajā! Sahajānandā! Beloved Sahajānandinī!’—this nectar of your name fell from Rāma's mouth.

Passage 97

रहो निपीतं श्रोत्राभ्यां गृह्णामि सततं रहः। तेनैव कलये मुक्तिं काश्यां वै म्रियतां सताम्॥९७॥

“I secretly drank it through my ears and continually receive it in my heart. By that name alone I bring liberation to the virtuous who die in Kāśī.

Passage 98

रामेति संमतो मन्त्रस्त्वक्षाभ्यां संपुटीकृतः। मुक्तिदानविधौ शक्तिमुद्वहत्यनवग्रहाम्॥९८॥

“The revered mantra ‘Rāma,’ enclosed by the two syllables of your name, bears unobstructed power in the bestowal of liberation.” Sahajā reveals her divine form Sukaṇṭha said:

Passage 99

इति स्तुत्वा विरते पार्वतीशे कृपानिधिः श्रीसहजा प्रसन्ना। तस्मै निजं दर्शयामास रूपं साक्षात्प्रमोदाटविगोचरं यत्॥९९॥

When the Lord of Pārvatī finished praising her, compassionate Śrī Sahajā became pleased and directly showed him her own form as it appears in Pramoda forest.

Passage 100

पारेपरार्धरतिकासुमनोललामं लावण्यसिन्धुलहरीनिचयाभिषिक्तम्। कोटीन्दुकोटिरविबिम्बरुचिप्रकाशसंपत्तिवन्नखमयूखकलापरम्यम्॥१००॥

Her form was the supreme flower crowning countless Ratis, bathed in gathered waves from an ocean of loveliness. The charming rays of her nails possessed the radiant splendor of millions of moons and millions of suns.

Passage 101

परिस्फुरच्चरणनखाच्छिखावधि स्वरूपतो मधुरिमपुञ्जमोहनम्। रघूद्वहप्रियतमावश्यताविधौ समर्थमुच्छ्वसितमनोजयौवनम्॥१०१॥

From her shining toenails to the crown of her head, her natural form enchanted as a concentrated mass of sweetness. Her blossoming, captivating youth was powerful enough to bring her most beloved scion of Raghu wholly under her sway.

Passage 102

ईषच्छैशवमत्येत्य नवयौवनरञ्जितम्। कटाक्षचालनाभ्यासपारवैकान्तसुन्दरम्॥१०२॥

She had passed just beyond childhood and was colored by fresh youth, supremely beautiful through perfect mastery in the movement of sidelong glances.

Passage 103

रूपशालिपदार्थानां सर्वेषां समतास्पदम्। कवीन्द्रकवितोत्कर्षावहं युवत्यादिमोचरम्॥१०३॥

Her form was the standard against which every beautiful thing was measured, the original form of young womanhood that carried the poetry of master poets to its highest excellence.

Passage 104

अदर्शयत् सा प्रथमं प्रमोदवनमद्भुतम्। वसन्तागमसंफुल्लपल्लवारुणभूरुहम्॥१०४॥

She first revealed wondrous Pramoda forest, whose trees were reddened by fresh leaves opening at the arrival of spring.

Passage 105

रसालमञ्जरीपुञ्जगुञ्जद्भ्रमरनादितम्। मञ्जुलद्रुमविस्तारि पल्लवारुणरञ्जितम्॥१०५॥

It resounded with bees humming amid clusters of mango blossoms; graceful trees spread everywhere, colored by reddish new leaves.

Passage 106

वहन्मलयमारुतं सुकलकण्ठवामाश्रुतं सुगन्धि तुलसीदलं घनलताटवीशीतलम्। विनोदनविशारदं समदमानीनीमानदं समुल्लसितमाधवं हृदि समुल्लसद्राघवम्॥१०६॥

Malaya breezes flowed there; sweet-throated women were heard; fragrant tulasī leaves and dense vine forests made it cool. Skilled in delight, it humbled the pride of proud women, with spring flourishing all around and Rāghava shining within its heart.

Passage 107

विकचवकुलनागपुन्नागचाम्पेयजम्बू- रसालद्रुमालम्बिवल्लीवितानस्फुरन्मण्डलम्। वकुलकुरवकतालहिन्तालिकाञ्चनमल्ली- तमालप्रवालस्फुरत्पत्रपुष्पप्रभापूरितम्॥१०७॥

Its radiant expanse held vine canopies resting upon blossoming bakula, nāga, punnāga, campaka, jambū, and mango trees. It was filled with the splendor of leaves and flowers of bakula, kuravaka, palm, hintāla, golden jasmine, and tamāla shoots.

Passage 108

सफलपनसद्राक्षिमाध्वीकसौरभ्यसंदोह- मत्तभ्रमद्भृङ्गदम्पत्युदीर्णस्वरोन्नादितम्। नवकिसलयजालसंस्वादकिञ्चित्कषाय- स्खलत्कण्ठनन्दोल्लसत्पञ्चमोच्चारभृत्कोकिलम्॥१०८॥

It echoed with the rising voices of bee couples wandering intoxicated by the gathered fragrance of fruiting jackfruit, grapes, and honey. Cuckoos sang the fifth note from throats made slightly astringent by tasting masses of tender new leaves.

Passage 109

तदन्वदर्शयद्दिव्यसखीनामष्टकं शुभम्। ततः षोडशकं चैव द्वात्रिंशकमनुक्रमात्॥१०९॥

She next revealed an auspicious group of eight divine companions, followed in order by groups of sixteen and thirty-two.

Passage 110

चतुःषष्टिं तद्द्विगुणं सखीवृन्दमदर्शयत्। एवं शतसहस्रादिसखीयूथान्यदर्शयत्॥११०॥

She showed a circle of sixty-four companions, twice the former number, and then groups numbering hundreds, thousands, and more.

Passage 111

चामरग्राहिणीश्छत्रधारिण्यादिसखीरपि। अन्याश्च स्नानपानादिक्रियासु सुविचक्षणाः॥१११॥

There were companions who held fly-whisks and parasols, and others expert in bathing, serving drinks, and every related service.

Passage 112

प्रादुरासुः पश्यतोऽस्य देव्यः कमललोचनाः। ताभिः प्रमोदविपिनमाकुलव्याकुलीकृतम्॥११२॥

As he watched, those lotus-eyed goddesses appeared and thronged every part of Pramoda forest.

Passage 113

तासां मध्ये कोटिचन्द्रसूर्यमण्डलभास्वता। अङ्गेन सुमनोगर्भसुकुमारतरेण सा॥११३॥

Amid them she shone with a body radiant as millions of suns and moons, more delicate than the heart of a flower.

Passage 114

शोभमाना रत्नभूषाभूषिता रत्नहारिणी। स्वयं षोडशवर्षीया तादृगालीकदम्बगा॥११४॥

She shone adorned by jewel ornaments and a jeweled necklace, appearing sixteen years old among a gathering of companions of matching beauty.

Passage 115

व्यतिष्ठत पुरस्तस्य सहजानन्दिनी ततः। चाकचक्यप्रभाजालैर्धर्षते इव तद्दृशौ॥११५॥

Sahajānandinī then stood before him, her dazzling nets of radiance seeming to overpower his two eyes. Śiva is overwhelmed by Sahajā's form

Passage 116

अशक्नुवन्त्यो सहजां द्रष्टुमित्यागते ह्यधः। विलोक्य सहजासख्यः शिवं सर्वा बभाषिरे॥११६॥

Unable to behold Sahajā, Śiva lowered his gaze. Seeing him thus, all of Sahajā's companions addressed him. The companions said:

Passage 117

पश्यास्मत्स्वामिनीं रुद्र यदर्थं त्वमिहागतः। किमधःक्षिप्तनयन आस्ते स्तब्ध इवाचलः॥११७॥

“Rudra, look upon our mistress, for whose sake you came here. Why do you sit with downcast eyes, motionless as a mountain?” Rudra said:

Passage 118

स्वामिन्या वो मया सख्यो दर्शनं कर्तुमञ्जसा। शक्यते न वयोवेशतेजोऽतिशयकारणात्॥११८॥

“Companions, I cannot readily behold your mistress because of the overwhelming excellence of her youth, dress, and radiance.

Passage 119

अलौकिकतमं तेजो रूपं चातिमनोहरम्। पश्यन्माधुर्यजलधौ मग्नोऽहं करणैः सह॥११९॥

“Seeing her utterly transcendent splendor and supremely captivating form, I and all my senses are submerged in an ocean of sweetness.

Passage 120

उन्मज्जामि निमज्जामि विपुले रूपसागरे। नावलम्बोऽत्र मे सख्यः प्रेमस्रोतो महारये॥१२०॥

“I rise and sink again in this vast ocean of beauty. Companions, I have no support amid the mighty current of love.

Passage 121

न पश्यामि स्थिरो भूत्वा क्षिप्तचित्त इतस्ततः। पश्यतो मे बलं वापि न किञ्चिदिह विद्यते॥१२१॥

“My mind is hurled here and there, so I cannot become steady and look. I possess no power at all to behold her.

Passage 122

यदि वः स्वामिनी मह्यं निजदर्शनयोग्यताम्। दद्यात्तदैव शक्तः स्यामिति सख्यो विनिश्चितम्॥१२२॥

“Only if your mistress grants me fitness for her vision will I be capable of it. Companions, know this with certainty.”

Passage 123

इत्युक्त्वा पादयोः सद्यो न्यपतन्नीललोहितः। चिरं तत्रैव संलग्नस्ततस्तं सहजाब्रवीत्॥१२३॥

Saying this, blue-and-red Rudra immediately fell at her feet and remained clasped there for a long time. Sahajā then addressed him.

Passage 124

उत्तिष्ठ भक्तशार्दूल यदर्थं त्वमिहागतः। तत्साधय मनाग्रुद्र कथं स्तब्ध इवासि भोः॥१२४॥

“Rise, tiger among devotees. Rudra, accomplish the purpose for which you came. Why do you remain somewhat frozen, dear one?

Passage 125

दत्ता ते परमा दृष्टिः कृपया पार्वतीपते। यया च लक्ष्यसेऽत्यर्थं मत्स्वरूपविलोकनम्॥१२५॥

“Lord of Pārvatī, by my grace I grant you supreme sight, through which you may fully behold my essential form.”

Passage 126

इत्युक्तोऽसौ सहजया दत्तदिव्यविलोचनः। अपश्यच्छिव उत्थाय तस्या रूपं महाद्भुतम्॥१२६॥

Addressed thus by Sahajā and given divine eyes, Śiva arose and beheld her supremely wondrous form.

Passage 127

अवलम्ब्य दृशं नावं रूपसागरमध्यगः। आलोलितो भावमयैस्तरङ्गैरपि निश्चलः॥१२७॥

Taking vision itself as his boat in the midst of her ocean of beauty, he remained steady even while tossed by waves formed of devotional emotion.

Passage 128

चिरमेष विलोक्यापि नातृप्यद्रूपपानतः। अगाधरसपीयूषगम्भीरां ताममन्यत॥१२८॥

Though he gazed for a long time, he was never satisfied with drinking her beauty. He understood her to be deep with the unfathomable nectar of rasa. Sahajā explains her infant stillness

Passage 129

ततो विज्ञापयाञ्चक्रे रुद्रस्तां भक्तवत्सलाम्। त्वं देवि नन्दनगृहे साक्षात्प्राकट्यमागता॥१२९॥

Rudra then petitioned the devotee-loving goddess: “You have directly appeared in Nandana's house.

Passage 130

कथं न सुखयस्येमं क्रीडन्ती बालकेलिभिः। रिङ्गणक्रीडनालापमन्दहासावलोकनैः॥१३०॥

“Why do you not delight him through infant play—crawling, playing, babbling, smiling gently, and looking upon him?

Passage 131

कथं जाड्यमिवालम्ब्य वर्तसे पार्श्वगा पितुः। अथोवाच स्मितं कृत्वा सहजानन्दिनी स्वयम्॥१३१॥

“Why do you remain beside your father as though overcome by insensibility?” Sahajānandinī herself smiled and replied.

Passage 132

अहं रामस्य विरहाज्जडीभूताखिलाङ्गकैः। न क्वचिद्दर्शनं कुर्वे न रमे नाभिभाषये॥१३२॥

“Through separation from Rāma, every one of my limbs has become motionless. I look at nothing, take delight in nothing, and do not speak.

Passage 133

त्वं च मे भक्तराजोऽसि सत्यं कर्तुं वचस्तव। आच्छाद्य विरहं रुद्र क्रीडिष्ये बालकेलिभिः॥१३३॥

“You are the king of my devotees, and to make your words true, Rudra, I shall conceal my separation and engage in infant play.

Passage 134

सुखयिष्यामि जननीं चकोरीमिव चन्द्रिका। तातं च मयि वात्सल्यभाववन्तं भवद्गिरा॥१३४॥

“At your word I shall delight my mother like moonlight delighting a cakora, and also my father, whose heart is filled with parental affection for me.”

Passage 135

इत्यालप्य ततो रुद्रं रूपमन्तर्दधे निजम्। ततः शैशवमासाद्य यथापूर्वमरोचत॥१३५॥

Having spoken thus to Rudra, she concealed her own divine form, resumed her infant state, and appeared as before.

Passage 136

एवमेषा शिवादीनां पूरयन्ती मनोरथम्। अतिष्ठज्जननीगेहं भूषयन्ती निजैर्गुणैः॥१३६॥

Thus, fulfilling the desires of Śiva and others, she remained in her mother's home and adorned it with her own virtues. The family sees Sahajā restored

Passage 137

आहूता अथ रुद्रेण गोपाः श्रीनन्दनादयः। गोप्यश्च राज्ञीमुख्या ददृशुः सहजां ततः॥१३७॥

Rudra then summoned Śrī Nandana and the other cowherds, as well as the cowherd women headed by the queen. They saw Sahajā—

Passage 138

क्रीडन्तीं ब्राह्मणस्याङ्के हसन्तीं सुखशालिनीम्। अतीव सुप्रसन्नास्यां तात तातेति भाषिणीम्॥१३८॥

playing happily upon the brāhmaṇa's lap, laughing with an exceedingly bright face and saying, “Father! Father!”

Passage 139

रिङ्गणाय प्रसर्पन्तीं सद्योऽपगतजाड्यकाम्। प्रत्युत्तरं च ददतीं हुंकारोच्चारणादिभिः॥१३९॥

Her immobility had vanished at once; she moved forward to crawl and responded with infant sounds and other utterances.

Passage 140

तां विलोक्य गतावेशां वटुसिद्धस्य मन्त्रतः। अमन्यन्त व्रजजना मुदं च प्रापुरुत्तमाम्॥१४०॥

Seeing her free of the supposed possession, the people of Vraja believed it was through the accomplished student's mantra and attained the greatest joy.

Passage 141

विप्रहस्तात्समादाय कन्यारत्नं मुदान्विताः। तुतुषू राज्ञीमुख्या नन्दनान्तःपुरस्त्रियः॥१४१॥

The women of Nandana's inner household, headed by the queen, joyfully took the jewel-like daughter from the brāhmaṇa's hands and rejoiced.

Passage 142

श्रीनन्दनोऽपि संतुष्टो वटुं विज्ञाय निःस्पृहम्। आत्मानं सदनं भृत्यान् पशूंस्तस्मै न्यवेदयत्॥१४२॥

Śrī Nandana too was delighted. Understanding that the young ascetic desired nothing, he offered him himself, his residence, his servants, and his cattle. Śiva departs and the family celebrates

Passage 143

स वटुः पूर्णकामोऽसावाशिषं समुदीरयन्। जगाम मुदितस्वान्तः स्वस्थानं यत आगतः॥१४३॥

That young ascetic, his desire completely fulfilled, pronounced a blessing and returned with joyful heart to the place from which he had come.

Passage 144

गोपा गोप्यश्च मुदिताः पिता माता मुहुर्मुहुः। महान्तमुत्सवं चक्रुः क्रीडन्तीं वीक्ष्य कन्यकाम्॥१४४॥

The delighted cowherd men and women, and especially her father and mother, held one great celebration after another when they saw the little girl playing.

Passage 145

सर्वे निर्मञ्छयाञ्चक्रुर्मुक्तारत्नमणिव्रजात्। स्नापयित्वा शुभैस्तोयै रक्षां चक्रुर्विशेषतः॥१४५॥

They all performed protective warding rites with masses of pearls, jewels, and gems; after bathing her in auspicious waters, they established special protection around her. It contains 145 independent passages. The edition prints passage number 78 twice immediately after passage 76; the first printed 78 is registered editorially as passage 77, and the second remains passage 78. All thirteen source pages were reviewed directly against the scan in batches of no more than two rendered pages, and the English is a fresh translation from the scan-controlled Sanskrit.
