Chapter context and opening material

Sahajā notices the signs of delight upon Rāma's return and privately hears of the unknown maiden waiting beneath a kadamba tree. She meets and embraces the maiden—Rāma still hidden in that companion-form—whereupon their intimate companions arrange a complete secret wedding within the jeweled forest bower. Sahajā questions Rāma Sukaṇṭha said:

Passage 1

तामुपेतां चिराद्वीक्ष्य सहजोवाच कौतुकात्। अये क्व नु गतारामे मामनुक्त्वैव कानने॥१॥

Seeing her return after a long absence, Sahajā asked with curiosity, “Rāmā, where did you go in the forest without telling me?

ततश्च पुनरायाता प्रेमोत्फुल्लविलोचना। कश्चित्प्रियतमो लोलः किं नु दृष्टस्त्वया रहः॥२॥

“Now you have returned with eyes blossoming in love. Did you secretly behold some charming beloved?

Passage 3

प्रत्यङ्गं पुलकाङ्कुरैस्तव तनुर्व्याप्ता वरीवर्तते। श्वासोच्छ्वासपरम्परा च वदने नाद्यापि ते शाम्यति। आर्द्रासि भ्रमवारिसीकरभरैरानन्दमावेदय- त्यन्तः स्वान्तमहो नितान्तमसकृद्वक्त्रप्रसादस्तव॥३॥

“Every limb of your body remains covered in shoots of horripilation, and the succession of breaths upon your face has not yet grown calm. You are drenched by abundant drops of perspiration, while the repeated brightness of your face plainly announces the intense joy within your heart.”

Passage 4

इति साकूतमाख्याय सहजानन्दिनी स्वयम्। रामं लीलारविन्देन जघान स्मितपूर्वकम्॥४॥

Having spoken with playful insinuation, Sahajānandinī herself smiled and struck Rāma with the lotus in her hand. Rāma reports the waiting maiden Rāmā said:

अलं मृषोद्येन सखि स्वभावरक्ते जने केयमलीकशङ्का। किंतु त्वमेकान्तचरी यदि स्यास्तदास्मि किञ्चिद्विनिवेदयामि॥५॥

“Enough of this teasing falsehood, companion. Why harbor a baseless suspicion of one naturally devoted to you? But if you will come somewhere private, I have something to tell you.

Passage 6

इत्युक्त्वा सहजानन्दां रामा चतुरिमोदधिः। रहो लतामण्डपान्तर्नीत्वा प्रोवाच सादरम्॥६॥

Having said this, Rāmā—the ocean of cleverness—led Sahajānandā privately into a vine pavilion and respectfully spoke.

Passage 7

अये सखि मम प्राणप्रिये श्रीसहजेश्वरि। अद्यैकमद्भुततमं किञ्चिदालोकितं मया॥७॥

“My companion, dearer to me than life, Śrī Sahajeśvarī, today I saw something utterly marvelous.

Passage 8

इतो विदूरे भात्येकं कदम्बवनमद्भुतम्। तत्रैकस्य कदम्बस्य मूले नीलमणिद्युतिः॥८॥

“Not far from here stands a wondrous kadamba grove. Beneath one of its trees shines a radiance like a blue jewel.

अपूर्वतरसौन्दर्यसंदोहेन विभूषिता। वर्ततेऽत्यद्भुता योषित्काचित्परमसुन्दरी॥९॥

“There waits an astonishing young woman, supremely beautiful and adorned with an unprecedented abundance of loveliness.

Passage 10

न तादृशं रूपमिह क्षमातले दृष्टं श्रुतं वा भवतीं विहाय तु। अनङ्गमत्यद्भुतकान्तिसंपदा शश्वद्वशीकृत्य विभाति सा स्त्री॥१०॥

“Apart from you, no such form has ever been seen or heard of upon this earth. That woman shines with such extraordinary splendor that she keeps even Anaṅga perpetually under her power.

Passage 11

यस्य कस्यापि गोपस्य नन्दिग्रामनिवासिनः। त्वन्नामजपसंसक्ता त्वद्वियोगभरातुरा॥११॥

“She belongs to the household of some cowherd residing in Nandigrāma. Absorbed in repeating your name, she is overwhelmed by the burden of separation from you.

Passage 12

त्वदनुध्यानपीयूषधाराशीतलमानसा। संपूजयति सा नित्यं काञ्चनीं प्रतिमां तव॥१२॥

“Her mind is cooled by the nectarean stream of meditation upon you, and every day she worships a golden image of you.

गन्धैः पुष्पैस्तथा धूपैर्दीपैर्नैवेद्यकैरपि। एवं संपूज्य सततं पिबति चरणोदकम्॥१३॥

“She continually worships it with fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, and food offerings, and afterward drinks the water that has washed its feet.

Passage 14

सहजे सहजानन्दे श्रीनन्दनसुते प्रिये। इति नामशतं नित्यं गृणाति तव तुष्टये॥१४॥

“‘Sahajā! Sahajānandā! Beloved daughter of Śrī Nanda!’—to please you she daily recites a hundred such names of yours.

Passage 15

त्वत्प्रेमपावकज्वाले तया प्राणास्तृणीकृताः। मन्ये तां तादृशीं वीक्ष्य कार्यं सख्यं त्वया सखि॥१५॥

“In the blazing fire of love for you, she has regarded her very life as mere straw. Seeing her in such a state, companion, I think you ought to make her your friend.

Passage 16

चिरादुत्कलिकावत्यै दर्शनं तु प्रदीयताम्। नूनं तव मनस्तस्यामत्यन्तं तोषमेष्यति। कादम्बिनीव दामिन्यास्तव सा सख्यमर्हति॥१६॥

“Grant your vision to this maiden who has long been filled with yearning. Surely your heart will find the greatest delight in her. As a raincloud belongs with lightning, she deserves your friendship.” Sahajā goes to meet her new companion Sukaṇṭha said:

Passage 17

ततश्च सहजानन्दा नितान्तं तुष्टमानसा। ददौ तस्यै निजं हारं समुत्तार्य स्ववक्षसः॥१७॥

Sahajānandā's heart became deeply pleased. Removing her own necklace from her breast, she gave it to Rāmā.

Passage 18

तस्याः स्कन्धे समारोप्य निजबाहुलतां ततः। शनैः पर्यचलत्स्थानाद् द्वित्राभिः सहितालिभिः॥१८॥

She then placed the vine of her arm upon Rāmā's shoulder and slowly left that place accompanied by two or three companions.

Passage 19

पुष्पावचयनव्याजाच्छेषाः सङ्गान्न्यवारयत्। यत्र सा नीलमणिभा मूले नीपतरॊः स्थिता॥१९॥

On the pretext of gathering flowers, she prevented the remaining companions from following. She proceeded to where the blue-jewel-radiant maiden stood at the foot of the kadamba tree.

Passage 20

तत्राजगाम शनकैः सहजानन्दिनी प्रिया। सा तु नूपुरयोर्नादं दूरादाकर्ण्य निर्वृता॥२०॥

Beloved Sahajānandinī slowly approached. Hearing the sound of her anklets from afar, the maiden was filled with joy.

Passage 21

अहो प्राणप्रियामद्य द्रक्ष्यामि स्वयमागताम्। अभूतपूर्वभाग्याभ्यां लोचनाभ्यामितीरिता॥२१॥

“Ah! Today these eyes, blessed with unprecedented fortune, will see my beloved dearer than life coming to me of her own accord,” she exclaimed.

Passage 22

ततश्च सहजा साक्षान्नवनीलमणिच्छविम्। कदम्बतरुमूले तां व्यचष्ट सुभगोत्तमाम्॥२२॥

Sahajā then directly beheld beneath the kadamba tree that most lovely maiden, radiant as a fresh blue jewel.

Passage 23

दृक्चकोरानन्दकरीं चन्द्रकान्ताममन्यत। यथोदितं रामया तद्रूपं कोट्यधिकं ततः॥२३॥

She took the moon-bright maiden to be one who delighted the cakora birds of her eyes. Her beauty was ten million times greater than Rāmā had described.

Passage 24

अथोभयोर्देहानन्दः परस्परमवर्धत। परस्परस्यावलोक्य रूपसारं परस्परम्॥२४॥

As each gazed upon the very essence of the other's beauty, delight in the bodies of both grew through their mutual vision.

सहजानन्दिनी दूरात्किञ्चित्संजनितत्वरा। अमिलत् प्रियया सख्या कादम्बिन्येव चञ्चला॥२५॥

From a distance Sahajānandinī quickened her pace a little and met her beloved companion, restless as lightning meeting a raincloud.

Passage 26

श्यामां निजप्रियतमामालिलिङ्ग चिरं सखी। परमानन्दपाथोधिमन्योन्यं ते जगाहतुः॥२६॥

The companion long embraced her own most beloved dark-complexioned maiden, and together they plunged into an ocean of supreme bliss.

Passage 27

अथ रामातिचतुरा भावज्ञा तस्य कामिनोः। द्रागत्याञ्चलयोर्ग्रन्थिमबध्नान्नीलपीतयोः॥२७॥

Then Rāmā, exceedingly clever and knowing the feelings of the two lovers, quickly came and tied together the hems of their blue and yellow garments.

Passage 28

ततोऽन्या जहसुः सर्वा ज्ञाततत्त्वाः ससम्भ्रमम्। सहजानन्दिनी चित्ते लज्जासीदथ गाहिता॥२८॥

All the other companions, understanding the truth, laughed with delighted excitement, while Sahajānandinī's heart was immersed in bashfulness. The companions bless the pair

Passage 29

लज्जाशालीननयनां वञ्चितामिव रामया। विलोक्य सहजां सख्यः सद्य एवेदमूचिरे॥२९॥

Seeing Sahajā's eyes lowered with modesty, as though she had been tricked by Rāmā, the companions immediately said this.

Passage 30

अलं ते लज्जयास्थाने चित्तेऽभिलषितो वरः। चिरादुत्कलिकामात्रं रामोऽयं मिलितस्तव॥३०॥

“There is no place for shame. The bridegroom desired by your heart—this Rāma, for whom you have long yearned—has now met you.

Passage 31

अद्यास्माकमपि क्रिया फलवती प्राप्तं फलं चक्षुषो- जातश्चापि मनोरथक्षितिरुहः सम्यक्फलाढ्यः सखि। यद्ध्यायातं सुचिरेण तत्समभवत्कल्याणमद्यैव नो यत्साक्षाद्भवतीं प्रियेण सहितां भाग्येन वीक्षामहे॥३१॥

“Today our efforts too have borne fruit, our eyes have attained their reward, and the wish-fulfilling tree of our longing has become laden with fruit. The blessing we contemplated for so long has arisen today: by good fortune we see you directly united with your beloved.

Passage 32

कादम्बिनीचपलयोरिव सत्तमालसौवर्णचारुलतयोरिव चातिधन्यः। वैदूर्यरत्नवरकुन्दनयोरिवाहो भूयाच्चिराय भवतोरयमेव योगः॥३२॥

“Like a raincloud joined with lightning, like a noble tamāla tree with a lovely golden vine, and like a sapphire set in the finest gold—may this most blessed union of you two endure forever.

Passage 33

वर्षासु सेव्यं किल यच्चकोरीकुलं शरत्स्वप्ययि चातकीकुलम्। वर्षाशरद्योगमुदावहो युवां विलोक्य तुष्टिं तनुतामुभे अपि॥३३॥

“May the cakora host served in the rains and the cātaka host in autumn both expand their delight upon seeing you two, whose union joyfully brings rain and autumn together. The bower is prepared for marriage

Passage 34

अथैतयोः कुञ्जनिकेतनान्तरे विवाहमह्लाय विधातुमीप्सवः। सखीः समामन्त्रयितुं रहस्ततः संप्रस्थिताः काश्चन सख्य उद्धुराः॥३४॥

Then some eager companions, wishing to arrange a wedding festival for the two within the bower dwelling, secretly departed to summon the other companions.

Passage 35

प्रमोदवनदेवी तु मङ्गलाह्वा ससम्भ्रमम्। परितो रचयाञ्चक्रे कुञ्जवेश्मनि तत्क्षणे॥३५॥

Maṅgalā, goddess of Pramoda-vana, at once bustled about and arranged everything throughout the bower residence.

Passage 36

वैदूर्यरत्नमणिविद्रुमपुष्परागमुक्तामयो सपदि कुञ्जमहो चकासे। उत्फुल्लमञ्जरितवृक्षलतावितानशोभाचितानि विपिनानि मुदं वितेनुः॥३६॥

The bower immediately shone, fashioned from sapphires, jewels, coral, topaz, and pearls. The forest, adorned by the beauty of canopies of flowering trees and vines heavy with blossoms, spread delight.

Passage 37

सद्यो ववौ मलयचन्दनगन्धवाहस्तुङ्गोत्तरङ्गसरयूजलसङ्गशीतः। वल्लीशताकुलमहीरुहगह्वरान्तःसञ्चारमन्दगमनः सुखदः समीरः॥३७॥

A pleasant breeze at once began to blow, carrying the fragrance of Malaya sandalwood, cooled by contact with the Sarayū's high-rising waves, and moving gently through the hollows of trees crowded by hundreds of vines.

Passage 38

मण्डलाख्या तदागच्छच्छाण्डिल्यस्य मुनेर्वधूः। या वै सुखितगोपस्य पुरोधाः सर्वकर्मसु॥३८॥

Then Maṇḍalā, the wife of the sage Śāṇḍilya, arrived. She served as priest for the cowherd Sukhita in all rites.

सा च प्राकारयामास दक्षिणं पूर्णमण्डलम्। आत्मशक्त्या महायोगिन्यानन्दकरशीतलम्॥३९॥

By her own power that great yoginī fashioned a complete auspicious enclosure, cool and joy-giving, upon the southern side. The wedding parties gather

उदित्वरकलानाथकिरणोद्योतरञ्जितम्। नवपल्लवसंशोभि प्रमोदविपिनं बभौ॥४०॥

Pramoda forest shone with fresh leaves, colored by the radiance of the rising moon's rays.

Passage 41

चकोराश्चारुचन्द्रांशुचयपानविचक्षणाः। चमत्काराणि चित्तस्य चाटूनि समचोकरन्॥४१॥

The cakora birds, skilled at drinking the lovely flood of moonbeams, performed wonders and offered sweet flatteries to the heart.

Passage 42

अथ मण्डल्या नीताः सर्व एव सखीगणाः। गायन्तः शुभगीतानि सद्यस्तत्र समाययुः॥४२॥

Then all the groups of companions, led by Maṇḍalā, immediately arrived there singing auspicious songs.

Passage 43

आगताश्च सखायोऽस्य प्रियनर्मवयस्यकाः। अहं शिखावलश्चैव मेघवर्ण उदारधीः॥४३॥

His beloved intimate cowherd friends also arrived: I myself, Śikhāvala, and the noble-minded Meghavarṇa.

Passage 44

मालाधरो मञ्जुघोष ऐरावतमुखा अपि। नदन्तो नादयन्तश्च वीणामुरजवल्लरीः॥४४॥

Māladhara, Mañjughoṣa, Airāvata, and the others came singing and sounding vīṇās, drums, and other instruments.

Passage 45

सर्व एवोत्सवौचित्यज्ञालिवेशविभूषणाः। राममानन्दयन्ति स्म सहजानन्दिनीयुतम्॥४५॥

All knew what suited the festival and were adorned in the dress of companions. They delighted Rāma, who was united with Sahajānandinī.

सर्वेषां द्विगुणो हर्षस्तत्क्षणात्समदृश्यत। सहजानन्दिनीराममिथुनं पश्यतां सताम्॥४६॥

At that moment the joy of all the worthy onlookers doubled as they beheld the pair, Sahajānandinī and Rāma. The jeweled wedding bower

नवशाद्वलभूमिषु महामारकतेष्विव। नवपल्लवराजीभिश्चित्रमास्तरणं स्तृतम्॥४७॥

Upon fresh grassy ground resembling great emeralds, a marvelous carpet was spread with rows of tender new leaves.

Passage 48

तत्र ताः कोटिशो यूथैः सख्यः कमललोचनाः। उपविश्य शुभं गीतं संजगुर्मधुराक्षरैः॥४८॥

There the lotus-eyed companions sat in their millions of groups and sang auspicious songs in sweet syllables.

Passage 49

अथ नव सहकारमञ्जरीभिर्विहिततमौ सुरभिश्रियावतंसौ। शिरसि विनिहितौ वधूवरौ तौ सुरचितमङ्गलमूहतुस्तदानीम्॥४९॥

Fresh mango-blossom ornaments, fashioned with fragrant beauty, were then set upon the heads of the bride and groom, who at that moment embodied divinely fashioned auspiciousness.

Passage 50

पृथक्लतामण्डपसद्मनी उभे वधूवराभ्यां सहसा विरेजतुः। मणिस्रगुद्भासिततोरणस्रजा पुष्पावलीपल्लवजालमध्यया॥५०॥

The two separate vine-pavilion dwellings for bride and groom suddenly shone, their gateways radiant with jewel garlands amid networks of flower rows and new leaves.

Passage 51

उदपूर्णमाङ्गलिकैः कलशैरभिमन्त्रितैः। वधूवरदृगानन्दः पुपुषे दर्शनोद्भवः॥५१॥

Consecrated ceremonial vessels stood filled to their rims. The delight born from the bride and groom seeing one another grew ever fuller.

सर्षपाः परितः कीर्णाः सूक्ष्मारुणमणीकणाः। प्रतिमानजुषः सख्यं परस्परमुपाययुः॥५२॥

Mustard seeds scattered all around appeared like tiny red jewel-particles, each resembling the other and entering into mutual companionship.

Passage 53

स्वाभाविककदलीखण्डन्यासैर्धूपदीपावलिभाजननिक्षेपैः। अतिशोभिततोरणमालाविधिभिर्नवपल्लवपुञ्जपताकाकलनैः॥५३॥

Natural clusters of plantain trunks were set in place; vessels bearing rows of incense and lamps were arranged; the gateways were richly adorned with garlands, gathered new leaves, and banners. Preliminary marriage rites

प्रासङ्गिकैर्गीतनादैर्गोपीजनमुखोद्गतैः। शुभैः शोभया पूर्णः सुमुहूर्तः समागतः॥५४॥

The excellent auspicious hour arrived, filled with beauty and with fitting, blessed songs rising from the cowherd women.

Passage 55

ततो रामस्य विधिना समावर्तनमद्भुतम्। समकारि पुरन्ध्रीभिर्ब्रह्मचर्यमहाव्रतात्॥५५॥

The married women then duly performed Rāma's marvelous samāvartana, marking his return from the great vow of brahmacarya.

Passage 56

यत्र स्वाध्यायमध्येतुं यास्यमानो निकेतनात्। श्रीनन्दनस्य बालेन श्यालेन स निवर्तितः॥५६॥

As part of that rite, he made as though to leave the dwelling to pursue sacred study, but the young son of Śrī Nanda, acting as his brother-in-law, turned him back.

Passage 57

इवस्रस्थानापनय्या गोपनार्या कयापि रामस्तोषितः सप्रतिज्ञम्। कन्यादानस्वीकरणाद्ब्रह्मचारी स्तुतिक्रियापटभूषादिदानात्॥५७॥

A certain cowherd woman pleased the brahmacārī Rāma by removing his former attire, obtaining his promise to accept the gift of the maiden, praising him, and presenting cloth, ornaments, and other gifts.

Passage 58

अथ निश्चयताम्बूलदानं निशि विधानतः। तस्मै कृतं पुरन्ध्रीभिर्मङ्गलस्वनपूर्वकम्॥५८॥

That night the married women duly presented him the betrothal betel, preceded by auspicious sounds.

Passage 59

निश्चयताम्बूलदाने रघुपतितनयः पूर्णचित्तः प्रमोदः साक्षाच्छ्रीनन्दनैकप्रभुवरतनयार्थे निगूढं सखीभिः। वासो भूषा बहुविधफलान्नादिवस्तूनि धृत्वा रत्नासत्रं दमदलपुरेः प्रेषयामास रासः॥५९॥

At the giving of the betrothal betel, Rāma, son of the lord of the Raghus, was filled with joy. For the daughter of the noble lord Śrī Nanda, the companions secretly assembled garments, ornaments, many kinds of fruits, foods, and other articles, and sent a jeweled bridal gift from the city of Damadala.

Passage 60

तदा निश्चयताम्बूले दीयमाने कलस्वरैः। कोकिलाकामिनीलोकः काकलीभिः समुज्जगौ॥६०॥

While the betrothal betel was being presented, the gathering of cuckoo-voiced women sang out in melodious tones.

Passage 61

कलितमलिकलापभूरिभेरीनिनदभरैः परितः शुभं प्रसक्तम्। प्रमुदवनसुकीचकैः स्वनद्भिर्मधुरतरो मङ्गलनादो ननाद॥६१॥

All around arose auspicious sounds, joined with swarms of humming bees and the full resonance of many drums. The sounding reeds of Pramoda forest made the festive music sweeter still.

Passage 62

सरसः स समागमः किलासीदुभयेषां खलु सार्थयोर्निकुञ्जे। अनदन् प्रणयेन यत्र गालीः करुणाम्भोनिधये रघुवर्याय॥६२॥

The meeting of the two parties within the bower was filled with rasa. There, out of affection, the women sang playful wedding reproaches to the best of the Raghus, ocean of compassion.

Passage 63

कूजन्त्यः कोकिलालापैराढ्या गालीर्गुणैर्गुणाञ्चिताः। उभयोः पक्षयो राजन् पुरन्ध्र्यस्तत्र रेजिरे॥६३॥

King, the married women of both parties shone there, cooing like cuckoos and richly embellishing their ritual wedding songs with every poetic quality.

Passage 64

नान्दीमुखं विशेषेण सारिका निरवर्तयत्। वेदवेदाङ्गविदुषां विचक्षणतया स्थिता॥६४॥

Sārikā in particular conducted the Nāndīmukha rite, displaying the discernment of one learned in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.

Passage 65

यद्यत्कार्यतमं गूढं प्रकटं वा सुरीतितः। लौकिकं वैदिकं चापि नोल्लङ्घ्य निदधुः स्त्रियः॥६५॥

The women properly carried out every necessary rite, whether private or public, worldly or Vedic, omitting nothing. Adorning the bride and receiving the groom

अथ वैवाहिके लग्ने संप्राप्ते वरपक्षगाः। गायन्त्यो वादयन्त्यश्च कन्यामण्डपमाययुः॥६६॥

When the wedding hour arrived, the women of the groom's party came to the bride's pavilion singing and playing instruments.

Passage 67

तत्र रत्नचतुष्के ताश्चतुष्कलशशोभिनि। वेदिकायां समारोप्य स्नापयाञ्चक्रुरालयः॥६७॥

There the companions seated her upon a jeweled bathing platform adorned with four ceremonial vessels and performed her bath.

गायन्त्यः स्नानगीतानि शुभानि सुखदानि च। शृङ्गारमण्डपे यत्र देवी तिष्ठति मङ्गला॥६८॥

They sang auspicious, joy-giving bathing songs in the adornment pavilion where the goddess Maṅgalā presided.

Passage 69

प्रमोदविपिने वर्यास्तस्याः संनिधिमाययुः। तत्र शृङ्गारयाञ्चक्रुर्धूपदानपुरःसरम्॥६९॥

The foremost women of Pramoda forest came into her presence and began adorning her, first making an offering of incense.

Passage 70

दुधुवुः कालगुरुणा तस्याश्चिकुरधोरणीम्। स्नानार्द्राणि त्वथाङ्गानि कञ्जपत्रमृदूनि च॥७०॥

They perfumed the mass of her hair with dark aguru and tended her bath-moistened limbs, soft as lotus petals.

Passage 71

अङ्गवस्त्रं समुत्तार्य तनौ रङ्गपटीं दधुः। पादयोस्तलमारभ्य शिखान्तं मण्डलं दधुः॥७१॥

Removing the cloth about her body, they dressed her in a colored silk and applied auspicious designs from the soles of her feet to the crown of her head.

Passage 72

रामपक्षगताः सख्यो भूषयन्ति स्म ते प्रभुम्। अवतंसं दधुः पश्चाद्रसालमञ्जरीमयम्॥७२॥

The companions belonging to Rāma's party adorned their lord and finally set upon him an ear ornament made of mango blossoms.

गायन्ति स्म सखीवृन्दाः सुस्वरं गीतमद्भुतम्। प्रमोदवनवासिन्यः कोकिलाश्च मदान्विताः॥७३॥

The groups of companions dwelling in Pramoda forest sang marvelous songs in beautiful voices, joined by the rapturous cuckoos.

Passage 74

अलिश्रेणीमयीं वीणां वादयन्ति स्म तत्पराः। उद्गुच्छस्तनशालिन्यो लताकान्ताः सखीवराः॥७४॥

The foremost companions, beautiful as vines and graced with budding breasts, devoted themselves to playing a vīṇā formed by rows of humming bees.

Passage 75

जगौ च मङ्गलां देवी प्रमोदवनदेवता। तस्याः स्वरेण सकलं नादितं कुञ्जमन्दिरम्॥७५॥

The goddess Maṅgalā, deity of Pramoda forest, also sang, and her voice made the entire bower residence resound.

Passage 76

अथ प्रेमहयारूढः सखीनां मण्डलैः सह। आययौ सुन्दरो रामः कन्यामण्डपतोरणम्॥७६॥

Then beautiful Rāma, mounted upon the horse of love and surrounded by circles of companions, arrived at the gateway of the bride's pavilion.

Passage 77

प्रत्युद्ययुः सखीवर्याः कृत्वोदकलशं पुरः। दीपभाजनहस्ताश्च चक्रुर्नीराजनाविधिम्॥७७॥

The foremost companions came out to meet him, placing a water vessel before him and performing the lamp-waving rite with trays of lights in their hands.

Passage 78

ततोऽभिषिषिचुः सर्वाः कलशस्थितपल्लवैः। अथ देवीं नमस्कृत्य चक्रुर्ग्रहणमस्य ताः॥७८॥

They all sprinkled him with leaves resting in the ceremonial vessel. Then, bowing to the goddess, they formally received him.

Passage 79

विष्टरं पाद्यमर्घ्यं च मधुपर्कं करे दधुः। अथान्तःपटमानीय कन्यामानिन्युरङ्गनाः॥७९॥

They offered him a seat, water for his feet, arghya, and madhuparka. The women then brought the bride behind the intervening cloth.

Passage 80

तत्राल्यः काव्यकलाविचक्षणा वधूवरं चामितमङ्गलाशिषा। अवर्धयन् मङ्गलिकाशताकुलाः कुञ्जेश्वरीं च स्फुटमाशयञ्छुभम्॥८०॥

The companions there, skilled in poetic art and absorbed in hundreds of festive observances, honored the bride and groom with boundless auspicious blessings and openly declared their good wishes for Kuñjeśvarī. Blessings upon Sahajā and Rāma

सर्वानन्दनिधिप्रमोदविपिनश्रीभोगसंवर्धनौ त्रैलोक्यामितमङ्गलैकनिलयौ कुञ्जेश्वरीप्राणदौ। लावण्यैकनिकेतनौ कमलया नित्यं समाराधितौ श्रीसन्नन्दननन्दिनीरघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८१॥

“May the daughter of noble Nanda and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy: they increase the splendor and delight of Pramoda forest, treasury of every bliss; they are the unique abode of immeasurable auspiciousness in the three worlds, the very life of Kuñjeśvarī, the one dwelling of loveliness, and are forever worshiped by Lakṣmī.

Passage 82

यस्याश्चारुकृपाकटाक्षविभवेनानङ्गसंदीपनं यस्य प्रेक्षणमात्रतो जडधियां चैतन्यलाभोऽनिशम्। सर्वोत्कर्षकलाकलापकलितश्रीविग्रहोद्द्योतितौ तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८२॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. The splendor of her lovely compassionate glance kindles Love himself; the mere sight of him continually awakens consciousness in dull minds. Their radiant forms embody every art at its highest perfection.

Passage 83

या सौन्दर्यतरङ्गिणी नयति यः सौन्दर्यरत्नाकरः। प्रेम्णः सारमनन्यगोचरतया जानीत एवेह यौ। कुञ्जागारमनोज्ञकेलिकलया लोकोत्तरश्रीयुतौ। तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८३॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. She is a river of beauty and he its jeweled ocean; they alone know love's essence. By their enchanting play in the bower residence, they possess splendor beyond the world.

Passage 84

सर्वस्वौ प्रणयप्रकर्षजमहाभावैकलक्ष्मीवतां कल्याणैकमहास्पदौ रसिकतासन्तानसंवर्धनौ। नित्यानन्दपयोनिधी रसपतिश्रीकल्पवल्लीद्रुमौ तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८४॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. They are the all-in-all of those endowed with the singular wealth of mahābhāva born from the highest love, the supreme abode of auspiciousness, the perpetuators of rasa, oceans of eternal bliss, and the wish-fulfilling vine and tree of the sovereignty of rasa.

Passage 85

चक्षुश्चातकपोषणीं रससुधाधारां च यो वर्षति स्वान्ते चित्तचकोरिकासुखसुधासारं च या द्योतति। लोकातीतगुणास्पदौ तुहिनरुक्कादम्बिनीमण्डलौ तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८५॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. He rains a nectarean stream of rasa that nourishes the cātaka bird of the eye; within, she radiates nectarean delight for the cakora bird of the heart. Abodes of qualities beyond this world, they are a moon and a mass of rainclouds. The final wedding blessings

Passage 86

छायामेत्य ययोर्भवन्ति सुजनास्तापत्रयोत्यव्यया- निर्मुक्ताः सततं जयन्ति च सुखस्वाराज्यलक्ष्मीभृतः। संफुल्लप्रमुदाटवीरसवर्षौ वल्लीतमालद्रुमौ तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८६॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. Reaching their shade, good people become free from the unending threefold affliction and flourish endowed with the royal wealth of happiness. They are the vine and tamāla tree that rain rasa upon the fully blossomed forest of Pramoda.

Passage 87

प्रेमानन्दसरोजकाननमरन्दासेविभृङ्गोत्तमौ लीलाक्षीरसमुद्रतुङ्गलहरीमालामरालाधिपौ। लोकानन्दनरागकाननवसन्तौ काकलीकोकिलौ तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८७॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. They are the foremost bees drinking the nectar in love-bliss's lotus forest, sovereign swans upon the high waves of the milk-ocean of divine play, spring in the forest of passion that delights the world, and cuckoos of sweet song.

Passage 88

एका कान्तविधूदयेन कुमुदश्रेणीव मोदं दध- त्यन्यस्तादृशचन्द्रिकाकुवलयं बिभ्रच्चिरं लोचने। अन्योन्याश्रयिणौ परस्परगुणग्रामाभिरामाकृती तौ श्रीनन्दनकन्यकारघुवरौ नित्यं सुखं प्राप्नुताम्॥८८॥

“May Nanda's daughter and the best of the Raghus ever attain joy. At the rise of her beloved moon, one delights like a row of night lotuses; the other long bears within his eyes the blue lotus nourished by her moonlight. Each takes refuge in the other, their beautiful forms adorned by one another's multitude of virtues.”

Passage 89

एतन्मङ्गलपद्यानामष्टकं यः शृणोति च। तस्य मङ्गलसंदोहो नित्यमेव प्रजायते॥८९॥

Whoever hears this set of eight auspicious verses will continually experience an abundance of blessings.

Passage 90

अमङ्गलस्य लेशोऽपि न जन्मन्युपजायते। रामचन्द्रहृदानन्दिकुञ्जवैवाहिकाष्टकात्॥९०॥

From this bower-wedding octet that delights Rāmacandra's heart, not even the slightest inauspiciousness arises in one's life. The bower marriage

अथ माङ्गलिके लग्ने गजमुक्ताफलाञ्जलिः। परस्परस्मिन्नपतत् परस्परकरार्जितः॥९१॥

Then, at the auspicious wedding moment, handfuls of great pearl-like grains, gathered in their hands, fell from each upon the other.

Passage 92

वरो वधूमुखं वीक्ष्य वर्धिष्णु प्रेमवारिधिम्। सखी नयनमन्दाक्षवेलया न्यरुणत्तराम्॥९२॥

Gazing upon the bride's face, the groom's ocean of love began to swell; the companion checked Rāma with the shoreline of a modest glance.

Passage 93

ह्रीणाभ्यां सहजानन्दा नेत्राभ्यां न निरीक्षितुम्। शशाक वरवक्त्राब्जं सखीजनकदम्बके॥९३॥

Amid the gathering of companions, bashful Sahajānandā could not look directly upon the lotus of the groom's face with her two eyes.

Passage 94

वरः प्रवीणो मदनस्य वाणैरत्यातुरो लक्षित आलिभिर्वै। वधूकरस्य ग्रहणे नितान्तखिन्नेन रोमाञ्चवता करेण॥९४॥

The companions saw that the accomplished groom, pierced and greatly agitated by Love's arrows, took the bride's hand with his own hand trembling and covered in horripilation.

Passage 95

विज्ञाय रामा रमणस्य भावं मनोजवाणाहतमानसस्य। चिरागमस्याशु विधिं विधाय वधूवरौ कुञ्जगृहे न्यवेशयत्॥९५॥

Understanding the lover's feeling and his heart struck by Love's arrows, Rāmā quickly completed the long-awaited rite and led bride and groom into the bower dwelling.

Passage 96

तत्रानयोः प्राकृतलेशवर्जो बभूव लीलाविधिरद्भुतो यः। न तं पुनर्वक्तुमहं क्षमोऽस्मि निरीक्षमाणः प्रियनर्मसख्या॥९६॥

There the two performed a wondrous play wholly free of even a trace of the ordinary. Though I witnessed it as an intimate companion, I am not capable of describing it further.

Passage 97

इत्थं तयोः कुञ्जविहार एष रामासखीनिर्मित उत्सवाढ्यः। पिकौघनोद्गीतयुतालिवीणासंवादभाङ्गत्यसमूहयुक्तः॥९७॥

Thus their bower play, arranged by Rāmā and the companions, abounded in festivity, joined by the singing of flocks of cuckoos, the vīṇās of humming bees, graceful dialogue, and assembled arts.

Passage 98

ततस्ताः सकलाः सख्यः कृतकृत्या इवाभवन्। युगलं वीक्ष्य मुदिताः सहजारामचन्द्रयोः॥९८॥

All the companions then felt that their purpose had been fulfilled, rejoicing as they beheld the pair Sahajā and Rāmacandra.

Passage 99

सहजानन्दिनीं प्राप्य सुखितेन्द्रकुमारकः। समस्तगोकुलस्त्रीणां मनोरथफलं ददौ॥९९॥

Having attained Sahajānandinī, the son of King Sukhita gave the women of all Gokula the fruit of their cherished desire.

Passage 100

अयं चातिरहस्यत्वान्न प्रकाश्यः कदाचन। रामस्य कुञ्जभवने विवाहः सुखसाधकः॥१००॥

Because it is supremely confidential, this bliss-bestowing marriage of Rāma within the bower residence must never be publicly disclosed.

Passage 101

ततोऽभवद्रामचन्द्रे व्रजः पूर्णमनोरथः। असिद्धः स्वयमन्यासां साधयेच्च किमन्यथा॥१०१॥

Through Rāmacandra, Vraja's desire was thus fulfilled. If he himself remained unfulfilled, how could he fulfill the desires of others?

Passage 102

अपारविरहाम्भोधेः पारं जातवति प्रिये। कृतोपकाराः सकलाः सख्यः शर्माणि लेभिरे॥१०२॥

When the beloved had crossed the boundless ocean of separation, all the companions who had rendered assistance attained happiness.

Passage 103

परिश्रमन् कुञ्जवीथीषु रामो विलोकितो विमना एव पूर्वम्। बलीयसा विरहेणैव मुक्तः सुधाकरो राहुणेवाप कान्तिम्॥१०३॥

Rāma, who had formerly been seen wandering distractedly through the bower paths, was released from mighty separation and regained his radiance like the moon freed from Rāhu.
