Passage 1

इदं स्थानं महाराज यत्र रामः स्वयं हरिः। कुपितेन्द्रकृतां वृष्टिमरुणत्स्वातपत्रतः॥१॥

“Great king, this is the place where Rāma, Hari himself, checked the rain sent by angry Indra with his own parasol.

Passage 2

एकदाहं कर्मरतो नवान्नेन पुरन्दरम्। विवक्षुरारभं राजन् मखं भूरिकृतव्ययम्॥२॥

“Once, king, absorbed in ritual and wishing to worship Indra with the new grain, I began a sacrifice requiring great expenditure.

सम्भाराः सर्वतो दिक्षु कल्पिता अङ्गणे गृहे। यियक्षमाणेनाहूता मयार्त्विगुचिता द्विजाः॥३॥

“Materials were arranged throughout the house and courtyard in every direction. Desiring to sacrifice, I summoned brāhmaṇas qualified to serve as priests.

Passage 4

अधिवासनस्य पूर्वेऽह्नि रामो दृष्ट्वा ममोद्यमम्। उवाच धरणीपाल स्मित्वा मधुरभाषणः॥४॥

“On the day before the preliminary consecration, earth-protector, sweet- speaking Rāma saw my preparations, smiled, and spoke. Śrī Rāma said:

अहो तात किमेतद्भूः सम्भ्रमः सुमहान् गृहे। कोलाहलः प्रतिगृहं सम्भारकरणे नृणाम्॥५॥

“Father, what is this great commotion throughout the house? People are making an uproar in every dwelling as they prepare materials.

Passage 6

एकैरानीतवस्तूनि स्थाप्यन्ते सेवकैः परैः। अन्यैस्तथैव सम्भारा आनीयन्ते तवाज्ञया॥६॥

“Some servants set down things that have been brought, while others bring still more supplies at your command.

Passage 7

आनेष्यन्ति परे भूयोऽप्याज्ञाया वशगा नराः। एवमान्दोलितं विश्वं दृश्यते बहुवासरात्॥७॥

“Other obedient men will bring yet more. For many days the whole community has appeared stirred into motion in this way.

Passage 8

उत्सवो वा विवाहो वा कोऽप्यपूर्वोऽथवा विधिः। कथ्यतां तात भवता ममापि ज्ञातुमिच्छतः॥८॥

“Is this a festival, a wedding, or some unprecedented rite? Father, please tell me, for I too wish to know.” Sukhita said:

तदाहमूचे निखिलागमवाचितम्। आरब्धोऽयं मखो राम यष्टव्यो यत्र वासवः॥९॥

“I replied in accordance with the teachings of all the scriptures: ‘Rāma, this sacrifice has been begun in order to worship Vāsava.

मेघानां नायकः सर्वजगज्जीवनदायकः। देवानामग्रणीश्चैव वज्रहस्तः पुरन्दरः॥१०॥

“‘Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, leads the clouds, gives life to the whole world, and stands foremost among the gods.

Passage 11

यज्ञेन देवा भाव्यन्ते भावयन्ति नरान् सुराः। एवमन्योन्यतो भावैरसकृच्छुभमाप्यते॥११॥

“‘Through sacrifice people nourish the gods, and the gods nourish people. By this mutual support, good is attained again and again.

यज्ञार्थं क्रियते कर्म कष्टमप्यर्थितुं फलम्। अन्यत्र कर्मलोकेऽस्मिन् सर्वं तद्गर्हितं बुधैः॥१२॥

“‘Work, however difficult, is performed for sacrifice in order to obtain its fruit. In this world of action, work done for another end is condemned by the wise.

Passage 13

प्राप्ततत्त्वोऽपि कुर्वीत कर्म वेदोदितं शुभम्। अकुर्वन् लौकिकं सेतुं भ्रज्येन्नैवात्र संशयः॥१३॥

“‘Even one who has realized truth should perform the auspicious work enjoined by the Veda. If he does not, the bridge supporting worldly order would break; there is no doubt of this.

ब्रह्मार्पणधिया वापि फलावाप्तिधियाथवा। लोकसङ्ग्रहणार्थं वा कर्म कुर्वीत कोविदः॥१४॥

“‘A wise person should act with the understanding that everything is offered to Brahman, or to obtain the fruit, or for the maintenance of the world.’

इति निशम्य मयेरितमीदृशं वचनमेष समस्तनियोजनः। किमपि मञ्जुलहाससुधाञ्चितं विरचयन् वदनं निजगाद माम्॥१५॥

“Hearing these words from me, he who directs all things adorned his face with the nectar of a charming smile and addressed me. Śrī Rāma said:

अहो अभिहितं तात भवता गोपसत्तम। यथा ददर्श वेदेषु तथैव त्वमिदं मम॥१६॥

“Father, excellent cowherd, you have explained to me precisely what you have seen taught in the Vedas.

एवमाचरणं पुंसां पारम्परिकमेव भोः। यथा गड्डुरिकाभागस्तथा जानीहि तत्त्वतः॥१७॥

“Yet understand in truth that people follow such conduct merely because it is handed down, like sheep following the one before them.

Passage 18

विविधाः कर्मणां मार्गाः पृथक् तेषां च वासनाः। याभिर्बद्धो याति जन्तुरुच्चावचगतीर्मुहुः॥१८॥

“The paths of action are many, and their latent impulses differ. Bound by them, a creature repeatedly enters higher and lower states.

इज्यन्ते देवताः सर्वाः पृथक् तन्त्रे क्रियापथे। ताभिर्दत्तान् भजन् भोगान् नैवेत्यात्यन्तिकं हितम्॥१९॥

“Distinct deities are worshiped through separate systems and ritual paths. Enjoying the pleasures they grant, a person does not reach the ultimate good.

Passage 20

अनित्यं कर्मणां तात फलं लोकप्रसाधनम्। इति विज्ञाय पुरुषो न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते॥२०॥

“Father, the fruits of action and the worlds they procure are impermanent. Knowing this, a person does not cling to ritual action.

Passage 21

यथा यथा कर्मफलानि भोगान् भुङ्क्ते जनस्तात तथा तथासौ। सम्प्रेरितो लुब्धधीरिन्द्रियेण न वै कदाचिद्भजते विरक्तिम्॥२१॥

“The more a person enjoys the pleasures produced by action, father, the more his greedy mind is driven by the senses; he never develops detachment.

तस्मात्तत्त्वं विजानीयादनित्यफलसाधनम्। जानन्नपि फले नित्ये कस्तावदनुषज्जते॥२२॥

“One should therefore understand action to be a means to impermanent fruit. Who, knowing the eternal fruit, would remain attached to that?

ज्ञात्वा भागवतं धर्मं नित्यानन्दफलोदयम्। भजस्व सर्वरोगैकमज्जनं हृत्प्रसादनम्॥२३॥

“Know and practice the dharma of devotion, whose fruit is eternal bliss, which cleanses away every disease and brings serenity to the heart.

त्वं तात वैष्णवान् धर्मान् साधयस्व सदाहितान्। गोविप्रभक्तवृन्दस्य यत्र पूजा विधीयते॥२४॥

“Father, establish the enduring Vaiṣṇava observances in which cows, brāhmaṇas, and assemblies of devotees are worshiped.

Passage 25

किं तात कार्यमिन्द्रेण पदं प्राप्तेन सावधि। स्वयं रुग्णः किमन्यस्य रोगान् संनाशयिष्यति॥२५॥

“What need have we of Indra, father, who has attained only a time-limited office? Being himself afflicted, how will he destroy another’s afflictions?

Passage 26

यावत्यो देवताः सर्वास्ता वेदविदि वै द्विजे। तस्मात् पूजय विप्रांस्त्वं वैष्णवांश्च विशेषतः॥२६॥

“All the deities dwell in the twice-born knower of the Veda. Therefore worship brāhmaṇas, and especially Vaiṣṇavas.

Passage 27

गिरिरेव स मद्भक्तो धनुर्वाणाङ्कभूषितः। पूजनीयो विशेषेण रत्नाद्रिर्जनपावनः॥२७॥

“This mountain itself is my devotee, adorned with the marks of bow and arrow. Ratna Mountain, purifier of people, should receive special worship.

Passage 28

सौगन्धिकगिरिश्चैव रत्नाद्रिश्च विशेषतः। बलिभिर्धूपदीपाद्यैः पूजनीयावुभौ गिरी॥२८॥

“Both Saugandhika Mountain and especially Ratna Mountain should be worshiped with offerings, incense, lamps, and other services.

Passage 29

अस्माकं गोधनं यत्र वर्धते सुखितं सदा। स एव पूज्यतां तात रत्नाद्रिः सर्वदा त्वया॥२९॥

“Our cattle flourish there and remain happy. Therefore, father, always worship Ratna Mountain.

Passage 30

दीप्यन्तां कन्दराश्चास्य दीपैः कर्पूरवर्तिभिः। यासु कल्पद्रुमाराममञ्जुलासु रमामहे॥३०॥

“Let its caves, where we delight amid charming groves of wish-fulfilling trees, shine with lamps whose wicks burn in camphor.

Passage 31

अन्नराशिशतैः कूटैर्गिरिरेष विभूष्यताम्। भोज्यन्तां ब्राह्मणवरा भोज्यैः स्वादुतमैरिह॥३१॥

“Adorn this mountain with hundreds of towering heaps of food, and feed eminent brāhmaṇas here with the most delicious dishes.

Passage 32

पच्यन्तां मण्डकापूपपरिकाखण्डमण्डकाः। वटकाः क्षीरवटकाः वटका नवनीतजाः॥३२॥

“Prepare maṇḍakas, cakes, parikās, pieces of maṇḍaka, vaṭakas, milk-vaṭakas, and vaṭakas made from fresh butter.

Passage 33

आदर्शका माठिकाश्च चक्रिका दुग्धचक्रिकाः। गुह्यकाः शर्करापाराः पायसं जलवल्लिकाः॥३३॥

“Prepare ādarśakas, māṭhikās, cakrikās, milk-cakrikās, guhyakas, abundant sugar confections, rice pudding, and jalavallikās.

Passage 34

पृष्ट्वाखिलान् गोपवृद्धान् पक्वान्नानि विशेषतः। क्रियन्तां राशिवत्तानि भोज्यन्तां तैर्द्विजातयः॥३४॥

“Consult all the cowherd elders, prepare cooked foods in great heaps, and feed the twice-born with them.

Passage 35

वैष्णवाश्च विशेषेण चातुर्वर्ण्योद्भवा जनाः। सम्बन्धिन उदासीना ज्ञातयश्च कुटुम्बिनः॥३५॥

“Especially feed Vaiṣṇavas, people born in all four social orders, relatives, neutral guests, kinsmen, and householders.

Passage 36

भूष्यन्तां भूषणैर्वस्त्रैश्चन्दनागुरुकुङ्कुमैः। आगतस्वागतार्हाश्च तोष्यन्तामुपचारकैः॥३६॥

“Adorn them with ornaments, clothing, sandalwood, aloes, and kuṅkuma. Welcome all who arrive and satisfy them with respectful services.

Passage 37

एवमानन्दिता लोका विचरन्तु समन्ततः। कुर्वन्तु व्रजवीथीषु भूषाविधिमनुत्तमम्॥३७॥

“Let people made joyful in this way move everywhere, and let them create unsurpassed decorations along Vraja’s streets.

Passage 38

गायन्तु चापि वाद्यानि वादयन्तु शुभान्विताः। क्रीडन्तु व्रजसुन्दर्यः कौतूहलविधायिकाः॥३८॥

“Let the auspicious sing and play instruments, and let Vraja’s beautiful women play and create festive delight.

Passage 39

एवमुत्साहविहितः क्रियतां तु महोत्सवः। आषाढस्य सिते पक्षे तृतीया पुष्यसंयुता॥३९॥

“Let a great festival be celebrated with such enthusiasm on the third lunar day of Āṣāḍha’s bright fortnight when joined with Puṣya.

तस्यां महोत्सवः कार्यो रथयात्रा हरेर्हि सा। मम जन्मदिने चापि फाल्गुन्यां च व्रजेश्वर॥४०॥

“On that day celebrate Hari’s great chariot-procession festival, and also on my birthday under the Phālgunī constellation, lord of Vraja.

Passage 41

कुरु प्रीतमनास्तात वैष्णवाराधनव्रतम्। कार्तिके मार्गशीर्षे च विधिवत् क्रियतामिदम्॥४१॥

“Father, joyfully undertake this vow of honoring Vaiṣṇavas. Perform it duly in Kārttika and Mārgaśīrṣa as well.

Passage 42

यथा सुतुष्टो भगवान् प्रयच्छेदतुलं फलम्। धनूराशिगते चार्के दधिपायसशर्कराः॥४२॥

“When the sun enters Sagittarius, offer yogurt, rice pudding, and sugar so that the fully satisfied Lord may grant incomparable fruit.

Passage 43

निवेद्य हरये नित्यं भोज्यन्तां वैष्णवा जनाः। निवेद्य सीताकान्ताय यद्वैष्णवसुखे हुतम्॥४३॥

“Always first offer the food to Hari and then feed the Vaiṣṇavas. Whatever is offered to Sītā’s beloved and used for Vaiṣṇavas’ happiness

Passage 44

तत्तदक्षयतां याति कल्पकोटिशतावधि। एवमाभाष्य नो रामः कारयामास भक्तितः॥४४॥

“becomes inexhaustible for hundreds of millions of kalpas.” Having spoken in this way, Rāma had us carry it out with devotion.

Passage 45

गोविप्रभक्तबन्धुस्त्रीसपर्यां तां यथोचिताम्। रत्नाद्रेः परितो राजन् सौगन्धिकगिरेस्तथा॥४५॥

“King, fitting service was arranged for cows, brāhmaṇas, devotees, relatives, and women all around Ratna Mountain and Saugandhika Mountain.

Passage 46

सरयूतटभूमेश्च कृता भूयस्यलङ्क्रिया। स्नात्वा सर्वे गोपवराः पूजां चक्रुर्मया सह गवां चैव द्विजानां च वैष्णवानां गिरेस्तथा॥४६॥

“The Sarayū’s bank was lavishly decorated. After bathing, all the eminent cowherds joined me in worshiping the cows, the twice-born, the Vaiṣṇavas, and the mountain.

Passage 47

दीपावलीभिः सरयूतटानि प्रदीपितानि द्रुममण्डलानि। शृङ्गाणि सौगन्धिकपर्वतस्य रत्नाद्रिशैलस्य च सर्वतोऽङ्गम्॥४७॥

“Rows of lamps illuminated the Sarayū’s banks, circles of trees, the summits of Saugandhika Mountain, and every side of Ratna Mountain.

Passage 48

अधित्यका उपत्यका दरीगुहाश्च गह्वराः। लतावितानमण्डपाः प्रदीपकैः प्रकाशिताः॥४८॥

“Its upper slopes, foothills, caves, caverns, and pavilions canopied by vines were all lit with lamps.

Passage 49

बलिदिनं पुरस्कृत्य कार्तिके शुक्लपक्षके। दिने दिने गवां पूजा वैष्णवानां द्विजन्मनाम्॥४९॥

“Beginning with Bali’s day in Kārttika’s bright fortnight, cows, Vaiṣṇavas, and twice-born people were worshiped every day.

Passage 50

गन्धैः पुष्पैस्तथा धूपैर्दीपनैवेद्यराशिभिः। धनुर्वाणाङ्कितं दोलमलञ्चक्रुर्व्रजौकसः॥५०॥

“With fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, and heaps of food offerings, the people of Vraja adorned the sacred place marked with bow and arrow.

Passage 51

प्रमोदवनदेवीभिर्गीयमानं समन्ततः। असकृद्रामचन्द्रस्य मधुरं विमलं यशः॥५१॥

“The goddesses of Pramoda Forest repeatedly sang Rāmacandra’s sweet and stainless glory on every side.

दीपमानाश्च ताः पूजाः स्वयं स बुभुजे गिरिः। भूत्वा पुरुषधौरेयो वृक्षशाखामहाभुजः॥५२॥

“The mountain himself accepted those radiant offerings, assuming the form of a foremost man whose great arms were branches of trees.

Passage 53

भुक्त्वा पक्वान्नसम्भारान् सन्तुष्टोऽदाच्छुभाशिषः। गोगोपगोपी निवहैः श्रीरामो जीवताच्चिरम्॥५३॥

“After eating the stores of cooked food, the satisfied mountain gave this blessing: ‘May glorious Rāma live long among the multitudes of cows, cowherd men, and cowherd women.’

Passage 54

दरीमुखविनिर्याताः श्रुत्वा गिरिवराशिषः। सन्तुष्टा गोदुहः सर्वे भेजिरेऽतीव विस्मयम्॥५४॥

“Hearing the mountain’s excellent blessing issue from the mouths of its caves, all the delighted cowherds were filled with profound wonder.

Passage 55

इत्थं समाप्य सुकृतेन शैलोदनं तदत्युत्सवाकलितमद्भुतचित्तहारि। घूर्णन्त आनन्दभरेण गोपाः स्निग्धाशयाः प्रियतमं सदनान्यभीयुः॥५५॥

“Thus completing that wonderfully captivating mountain-and-rice festival with meritorious acts and immense celebration, the warm-hearted cowherds returned to their cherished homes, reeling beneath the weight of joy.

Passage 56

पूजाभङ्गं समालोक्य कुपितः पाकशासनः। प्रायामास जलदान् नन्दिग्रामं निमज्जितुम्॥५६॥

“Seeing his worship discontinued, Indra became angry and dispatched clouds to submerge Nandigrāma. Indra said:

गच्छन्तु कालजलदाः सज्जयन्तु व्रजावनीम्। ये मत्तास्त्यक्तसीमानस्तान्नाशयत तत्क्षणात्॥५७॥

“Let the black clouds go and overwhelm the land of Vraja. Those intoxicated people have cast aside all bounds—destroy them at once.

Passage 58

अहो गोपैरमर्यादैः क्षत्रबन्धुगिरा वयम्। देवा अपि जगद्रक्षाकारिणो ननु लङ्घिताः॥५८॥

“Alas! At the word of a mere kṣatriya, these undisciplined cowherds have transgressed against us gods, who protect the world.

Passage 59

तेषां द्वित्रिदिनोद्भूतं सौभाग्यश्रीमदं क्षणात्। हरताम्भोधराः सद्यो नाशयध्वं सगोधनम्॥५९॥

“Clouds, immediately strip away their newly arisen pride in prosperity and fortune. Destroy them together with their cattle.

Passage 60

नष्टजीवातवो नष्टदारापत्यसुहृद्गणाः। ज्ञास्यन्त्यात्मकृतं कर्मविपाकं क्षुद्रबुद्धयः॥६०॥

“When their livelihoods, wives, children, and circles of friends are gone, those petty-minded people will understand the consequence of their own act.

Passage 61

अद्यावधि न केनापि कृतमौद्धत्यकर्म च। यादृक् श्रीधनमत्तान्तःकरणैरेभिरञ्जसा॥६१॥

“Until today no one has committed such insolence as these people have so readily done, their hearts intoxicated by wealth and splendor.”

Passage 62

इत्थमाज्ञाप्य महासेधान् पुष्करावर्तकादिकान्। प्रेषयामास कुपितः पुरुहूतः श्रियोन्मदः॥६२॥

“Thus commanding the great clouds led by Puṣkarāvartaka, angry Indra—proud of his majesty—sent them forth.

Passage 63

तेऽञ्जसा पर्वतप्रायाः कालजीमूतशङ्कराः। अवाकिरन्नभोदेशं व्रजमावृत्य सर्वतः॥६३॥

“Mountain-like and terrifying as the clouds of cosmic dissolution, they quickly covered the sky and surrounded Vraja on every side.

Passage 64

स्वनन्तोऽत्यर्थगम्भीरं घोषपूरितदिक्तटाः। तडिद्भिर्भीषणाकारा आययुः कालवारिदाः॥६४॥

“Roaring with tremendous depth until the quarters’ horizons were filled with sound, the black clouds came in terrifying forms illuminated by lightning.

Passage 65

करालाः कालसदृशाः कालिकाजालदारुणाः। शुण्डिशुण्डासमाकारैरासारैर्मुमुचुर्जलम्॥६५॥

“Fearsome as death and dreadful with networks of darkness, they released water in torrents shaped like the trunks of great elephants.

उदग्रर्मशलाकारैर्धारासारैररुन्तुदैः। महीधरानुदखनन् वायुवेगेरिता घनाः॥६६॥

“Driven by the wind, the clouds assailed even mountains with piercing, massive, iron-bar-like downpours.

Passage 67

धाराभिर्घोररूपाभिः खन्यमानं धरातलम्। अभूद्धनुःषु पञ्चाशदभूद्गर्तायितं नृप॥६७॥

“King, the earth, excavated by those fearsome streams, became like a pit fifty bow-lengths deep.

Passage 68

व्रजौकसस्तमालोक्य सर्वप्रलयमुत्थितम्। आययुः शरणं सर्वे रामस्य करुणानिधेः॥६८॥

“Seeing what appeared to be total dissolution, all Vraja’s residents came for refuge to Rāma, the treasury of compassion.

Passage 69

गावो वत्सा वत्सतर्यो रम्भमाणाः समन्ततः। धारासारार्दिता रामं पश्यन्ति च शुभाननम्॥६९॥

“Cows, calves, and yearlings lowed on every side. Tormented by the downpour, they gazed upon auspicious-faced Rāma.

Passage 70

गोपा गोप्यो व्रजजना महाकालघनार्दिताः। कुपितेन्द्रकृतं मत्वा रामं शरणमाययुः॥७०॥

“Cowherd men, cowherd women, and all the people of Vraja, assailed by clouds of great destruction and recognizing this as angry Indra’s act, took refuge in Rāma. The people of Vraja said:

Passage 71

राम राम महाबाहो लक्ष्मण व्रजजीवन। आबाल्याद्रक्षितानां नो विनाशोऽयमुपस्थितः॥७१॥

“Rāma! Rāma, mighty-armed one! Lakṣmaṇa, life of Vraja! Though you have protected us since childhood, destruction now stands before us.

Passage 72

राम त्वच्चरणाम्बुजातविरहाद्भीता वयं सम्प्रति क्रुद्धेन्द्रप्रतिमुक्तकालजलदासारातिधाराजलैः। हे हे नाथ भृशार्दिता व्रजजनाः कं याम जीवैषिण- स्त्वत्तोऽन्यं शरणं महार्तिशमनं त्वं रक्ष नः केवलम्॥७२॥

“Rāma, we now fear separation from your lotus feet beneath the overwhelming waters released from the clouds of destruction by furious Indra. Lord! The people of Vraja are grievously afflicted. Desiring to live, to whom else can we go for refuge and relief from this great distress? You alone must protect us.

इति स्वानामार्तिं हृदि समुपधाय क्षितिपते कृपासिन्धुर्बन्धुः स्वजनजनतायाः प्रभुरसौ। महोदारस्वान्तो दशरथकुमारस्तव तदा वितस्तार छत्रं निजमखिलरक्षाविधिपटुः॥७३॥

“Earth-protector, taking his own people’s distress into his heart, that Lord— ocean of compassion, kinsman of his devotees, your great-hearted son—spread out his own parasol, adept in protecting everyone.

Passage 74

छत्रे रामस्य यावज्जलधरपटली दारणासारवर्षं विस्तारं भूरि भेजे कठिनतरशिलावज्रपातेऽप्यजीर्यत। तस्याधो गोपगोपीपशुगणसहिताः सर्व एव व्रजस्थाः पश्यन्तो रामचन्द्राननतुहिनकरं त्यक्तभीशोकमासुः॥७४॥

“As the cloud mass poured its rending deluge, Rāma’s parasol expanded immensely and remained unbroken even beneath the fall of the hardest stones and thunderbolts. Under it, every resident of Vraja—together with cowherd men, cowherd women, and animals—gazed upon the moon of Rāmacandra’s face and rested free from fear and grief.

एवं स पक्षपर्यन्तं कुपितः पाकशासनः। अमुञ्चत्कालजलदैरासारं व्रजनष्टये॥७५॥

“Thus, for an entire fortnight, angry Indra released torrents from the black clouds to destroy Vraja.

Passage 76

गर्जदैरावतारूढो वर्षन् पाषाणधोरणीम्। व्रजस्योन्मूलनं शक्रश्चिकीर्षुरनदद्धि॥७६॥

“Mounted upon roaring Airāvata and raining down streams of stone, Indra roared as he sought to uproot Vraja.

Passage 77

पक्षस्यान्ते निशम्य व्रजमखिलमसौ किञ्चिदप्यश्मपातै- रक्षुण्णं रामचन्द्रामितविततमहाछत्रवर्यस्य मूले। जाताहङ्कारनाशस्तृणमिव लघुतां स्वस्य मन्वान इन्द्रः पर्जन्यानां समूहं सपदि गगनगं वारयामास भीतः॥७७॥

“At the fortnight’s end, Indra learned that all of Vraja remained entirely unharmed by the falling stones beneath Rāmacandra’s immeasurably extended, supreme parasol. His pride destroyed and seeing himself as light as a blade of grass, frightened Indra immediately restrained the cloud host moving through the sky.

Passage 78

रामस्य वीर्यादतुलाद्दुरन्तात्सभीतभीतश्चकितः पुरन्दरः। निश्चित्य रामं पुरुषप्रकाण्डं मुहुः स्वकार्यादनुतापमापत्॥७८॥

“Thoroughly frightened and astonished by Rāma’s incomparable, invincible power, Indra recognized him as the supreme person and repeatedly repented his own deed.

Passage 79

रामोऽपि दृष्ट्वा प्रलयाभ्रजालं सद्यो निवृत्तं वितथोद्यमात्ततः। सञ्जह्र आविंशतियोजनाधिकं विस्तीर्णमात्मीयनिजातपत्रम्॥७९॥

“Seeing the network of doomsday clouds immediately withdraw from its futile effort, Rāma folded away his own parasol, which had spread more than twenty yojanas.

Passage 80

स्थानं च तदिदं राजन् यत्र लज्जानतो हरिः। आययौ शरणं रामं स्तुवन्निगमसूक्तिभिः॥८०॥

“King, this is the place where Indra, bowed by shame, came for refuge to Rāma and praised him with hymns of the Veda.

Passage 81

विहाय मुकुटं यानं पादुकां छत्रचामरे। शुष्यता वदनेनासौ सापराधोऽभिलक्षितः॥८१॥

“He abandoned his crown, vehicle, sandals, parasol, and fly-whisks. His face was withered, and he plainly appeared conscious of his offense.

Passage 82

धावित्वैव ततो दूराज्जगृहे पादमस्य सः। सापराधानामपि वै शरण्यं शरणार्थिनाम्॥८२॥

“Running from afar, Indra seized the feet of Rāma, who grants refuge even to offenders who sincerely seek shelter.

Passage 83

सोऽवाङ्मुखो नामुञ्चदस्य पादौ कारुण्यवारांनिधिमानसस्य। उत्तिष्ठ देवेश सुधीर्भवेति तमुत्थापयामास कथञ्चन प्रभुः॥८३॥

“With face lowered, he would not release the feet of the Lord whose heart is an ocean of compassion. Rāma finally raised him, saying, ‘Rise, lord of the gods, and become wise.’

Passage 84

स उत्थितो वाग्वदनत्वमुञ्चन् स्तौति सुपर्वाधिप आत्तसूक्तिः। रत्नाद्रिसद्रत्नशिलानिषण्णं सिंहासनस्थं नृपसेव रामम्॥८४॥

“Rising and recovering speech, the lord of the gods praised Rāma with chosen hymns as the Lord sat like a king upon a fine jeweled slab of Ratna Mountain.

Passage 85

यावद्बुद्धिवितानकल्पितवचोविस्तारवाग्गुम्फनं स्तुत्वा स्वर्जनसम्भूतसखिलाधारसुधर्माधिपः। स्वर्धेनुस्तनिकाचतुष्टयभवैर्दुग्धैर्बहिःसञ्चरत्- सौरभ्यैः सहसाभिषिच्य पुरतस्तस्थौ निबद्धाञ्जलिः॥८५॥

“The lord of heaven praised Rāma with an elaborate garland of words extending as far as his understanding allowed. He then bathed the support of all beings with fragrant milk from the four udders of the celestial cow and stood before him with folded hands.

Passage 86

स्वर्धेनुरपि सुप्रीता संस्तूयेन्द्रापराधनम्। क्षमाप्य सादरं पश्चादुवाचेदं महीपते॥८६॥

“The celestial cow too was deeply pleased. After praising Rāma and respectfully securing forgiveness for Indra’s offense, she spoke as follows, earth-protector. The celestial cow said:

Passage 87

एवमेव खलनिग्रहं दधत्स्वान् खलेन विदधच्च निर्भयान्। राम धामघनवामविग्रह पालयंश्च शरदां शतं जय॥८७॥

“Continue to restrain the wicked and make your own people fearless of them. Rāma, beautiful cloud-dark embodiment of the supreme abode, triumph as you protect them for a hundred autumns.

Passage 88

त्वं पूर्णः पुरुषोत्तमः सुविदितः कारुण्यसिन्धो मनाक् सद्धर्मद्विजधेनुदेवतजनत्रय्यादिरक्षापरः। मूढस्यात्मरहस्यवेदनविधौ सामर्थ्यहीनस्य किं त्वागश्चेतसि राम सङ्कलयसे पुत्रस्य माता यथा॥८८॥

“You are known as the complete Supreme Person, ocean of compassion, wholly devoted to protecting true dharma, brāhmaṇas, cows, gods, people, and the Veda. Rāma, why hold in your heart the offense of this fool, incapable of knowing the secret of your identity? Forgive him as a mother forgives her son.

Passage 89

इत्युक्त्वात्मानमस्य प्रणतजनशरण्याङ्घ्रिपद्मे समर्प्य स्वर्धेनुः पातयित्वा त्रिदिवपरिवृढं दण्डवत्तात्पुरस्तात्। आदायाथाभ्यनुज्ञामतुलमधुरिमानन्यलावण्यपूरं सिक्तान्तनेत्रयोश्च प्रणयपरवशागच्छदिन्द्रेण सार्धम्॥८९॥

“Speaking thus, the celestial cow surrendered herself at Rāma’s lotus feet, the refuge of those who bow, and made heaven’s lord fall like a staff before him. After receiving permission from the incomparable reservoir of sweetness and unique beauty, she departed with Indra, both their eyes wet and their hearts overcome by love.

Passage 90

एतच्चास्याः पयःपूरैर्जातमत्यद्भुतं सरः। अत्रावगाह्य नृपते लभन्ते सिद्धिमुत्तमाम्॥९०॥

“This extraordinary lake arose from the flood of her milk. By bathing here, king, people attain the highest accomplishment.

Passage 91

इमान्यैरावतपदचिह्नानि धरणीपते। मुहुर्मुहुरवलोक्यानि साश्चर्यैर्गोपबालकैः॥९१॥

“Earth-protector, these are Airāvata’s footprints, repeatedly viewed with wonder by the cowherd boys.

Passage 92

अयं शक्रध्वजो नाम रत्नाद्रेरध्युपत्यकम्। ग्रामः परमसौभाग्यकमनीयतमो व्रजे॥९२॥

“This village at the foot of Ratna Mountain is called Śakradhvaja and is among the most lovely and fortunate places in Vraja.

Passage 93

रत्नाद्रेः परितो मध्ये सरांसि सरसीस्तथा। फुल्लेन्दीवरसञ्जुष्टकमलानि पश्य भूपते॥९३॥

“Look, earth-protector, at the lakes and pools around and within Ratna Mountain, their lotuses accompanied by blooming blue water lilies.

Passage 94

अत्र तीर्थानि बहुलान्यवगाहस्व सादरम्। सम्पूर्णतीर्थयात्रायाः फलं लब्धासि तत्क्षणात्॥९४॥

“Bathe reverently in the many tīrthas here. In that instant you will obtain the fruit of a complete pilgrimage to every sacred place.

Passage 95

अत्र नारदकुण्डाख्यं तीर्थमस्ति महीपते। माहात्म्यं तस्य वक्ता ते सुकण्ठो नाम गोपतिः॥९५॥

“Earth-protector, the tīrtha called Nārada Kuṇḍa is here. The cowherd Sukaṇṭha will tell you its greatness.

Passage 96

शिवकुण्डे नरः स्नात्वा सर्वपापैर्विमुच्यते। श्रीरामदर्शनाकाङ्क्षी यत्र नित्यं स्थितो हरः॥९६॥

“A person who bathes in Śiva Kuṇḍa is released from every sin. Śiva remains there eternally, longing to behold glorious Rāma.

Passage 97

स्थानान्यत्र हरस्यापि श्रीरामस्य महीपते। निर्दिष्टानि सुकण्ठेन तानि द्रष्टासि विस्मितः॥९७॥

“Earth-protector, Sukaṇṭha will point out other places here belonging to Śiva and glorious Rāma. You will behold them with wonder.

Passage 98

रामस्यातिप्रियो धन्यः सखा विरहिणां वरः। सुकण्ठो नाम गोपालः शेषं ते कथयिष्यति॥९८॥

“The blessed cowherd Sukaṇṭha, exceptionally dear to Rāma and foremost among those who suffer separation, will tell you the rest.

Passage 99

रामस्य कैशोरचरित्रमद्भुतं प्रवक्तुमस्मीश न पारये ततः। सुकण्ठनामानममुष्य निस्तुलं सखायमादिश्य नदीं व्रजाम्यहम्॥९९॥

“Lord, I am unable to recount Rāma’s marvelous adolescent deeds. Therefore I appoint his incomparable friend named Sukaṇṭha and go to the river.

Passage 100

कृतनित्यक्रियः स्नात्वा सरय्वा विमलेऽम्भसि। आनेष्ये भोज्यसम्भारं तुभ्यं राजन् मुदावहम्॥१००॥

“After completing my daily rites and bathing in the Sarayū’s stainless water, I will bring you a delightful array of food, king.

Passage 101

अत्र मञ्जुवटे तावज्ज्योतिर्लिङ्गस्य सन्निधौ। सुकण्ठेन कथां शृण्वन् सुखमास्व महीपते॥१०१॥

“Until then, earth-protector, remain happily here beneath the lovely banyan, near the Jyotirliṅga, and hear the account from Sukaṇṭha.” Brahmā said:

सुकण्ठमादिश्य नृपानुशीलने जगाम गोपः सुखितेश्वराभिधः। सुकुण्ठराज्ञोस्तदतः परं सखे भुशुण्ड संवादमनुत्तमं शृणु॥१०२॥

After appointing Sukaṇṭha to attend upon the king, the cowherd called Sukhita departed. Friend Bhuśuṇḍi, now hear the unsurpassed dialogue between Sukaṇṭha and the king. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे दशरथतीर्थयात्रायां व्रजागमने एकोनविंशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः॥ ११९ ॥ “Thus ends Chapter 119, concerning the coming to Vraja within Daśaratha’s pilgrimage, in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.” Source control note Chapter 119 occupies registered source leaves 818–826 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 819–827) and contains 102 numbered passages. It begins with its own heading on physical page 819 and ends above the opening of Chapter 120 on physical page 828. All nine chapter pages were reviewed directly against the scan in batches of no more than two renders; the tenth rendered page was used only to verify the next-chapter boundary and was excluded. Every passage has a continuous heading, a matching Sanskrit terminator, and a fresh English rendering; no numbering repair is required. Passage 102 was checked again at high resolution. Its second occurrence of Sukaṇṭha is retained as the printed सुकुण्ठ, while the translation uses the name's regular form.
