Passage 1

इदं स्थानं महाराज यत्र रामः शुभाकरः। गोगोपगोपीसन्दोहान् दावाग्नेः पर्यरक्षयत्॥१॥

“Great king, this is the place where beneficent Rāma completely protected the gathered cows, cowherd men, and cowherd women from a forest fire.

Passage 2

ज्योतिर्लिङ्गेश्वरं नाम लिङ्गमत्र त्रिशूलिनः। सर्वे कृष्णचतुर्दश्यां दर्शनार्थमुपाययुः॥२॥

“A liṅga of the trident-bearing Lord called Jyotirliṅgeśvara stands here. On the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight everyone came to behold it.

Passage 3

गोपा गोप्यश्च सकलाः स्नात्वा वै सारवेऽम्भसि। सङ्कल्पव्रतमातेनुः शिवस्य वरदेषितुः॥३॥

“All the cowherd men and women bathed in the Sarayū’s water and undertook a votive observance for Śiva, the desired giver of boons.

ते पूजयित्वा वरदं पञ्चकालमुमापतिम्। इहैव विपिनेऽवात्सुः सस्त्रीपशुकुमारकाः॥४॥

“After worshiping Umā’s boon-giving Lord through the five periods, they remained in this very forest with their wives, cattle, and children.

अर्धरात्रे व्यतीते तु समन्ताद्विपिनं दहन्। उपस्थितो दाववह्निर्ज्वालाभिर्गगनं लिहन्॥५॥

“After midnight had passed, a forest fire appeared, burning the woodland on every side and licking the sky with its flames.

Passage 6

अश्रद्दृश्यज्वालविशालमालादुर्दर्शरूपो विलिहन् समन्तात्। भस्मीकरिष्यन् पशुपां कुलानि दावानलः पर्यवृतत्स तत्र॥६॥

“Terrible to behold, with vast and unbearable chains of flame devouring every side, the forest fire encircled the place, ready to reduce the cowherd community to ash.

Passage 7

सुप्तानि खेचरकुलानि यदीयदेशेष्वण्डानि दावदहनेन निनिदहन्ति। त्यक्त्वाशु जीवितहितैषिण उच्चकैः खमुड्डियिरे सकरुणं कलितस्वनानि॥७॥

“The fire burned the eggs in the nests of sleeping birds wherever it reached. Seeking to save their own lives, the birds abandoned them and flew high into the sky, uttering anguished cries.

कोला वनैकवसतयो निभृतं सनिद्रा आकस्मिकेन दववह्निशिखागणेन। सम्प्लुष्यमाणवपुषः परितो भ्रमन्तः क्वापि प्रवेशमनवाप्य विनाशमापुः॥८॥

“Boars whose only home was the forest had been sleeping quietly. Scorched by the sudden mass of forest-fire flames, they wandered everywhere, found no place of refuge, and perished.

Passage 9

त्रस्ता दवेन करिणश्च करेणुयुक्ताश्चीत्कारिणः प्रतिरवाकुलकाननान्ताः। शुण्डोच्छलज्जलभरेण वपुर्नितान्तमुक्षन्त एव दवदाहभृतो मुमूर्छुः॥९॥

“Terrified by the blaze, elephants and their mates trumpeted until the forest reverberated. They drenched their bodies with water flung from their trunks, yet, overcome by the forest heat, they fainted.

Passage 10

आवेजिता वनकृशानुकरालकोला मध्येऽनुधावितुमपि प्रसभं न शक्ताः। सिंहा मृगाश्च शिखिनो भुजगाश्च यूथैरन्योन्यवैरमुदपास्य वने तस्थुः॥१०॥

“Agitated by the forest conflagration’s dreadful uproar and unable even to run through its midst, lions, deer, peacocks, and serpents stood together in groups, abandoning their mutual hostility.

वित्रासिनो मृगजपोतगणाः समन्ताद्भ्राम्यन्त आकुलधियो वनपावकेन। उत्सर्पता स्वजननीभिरपि प्रमुक्ता नो वर्तितुं न चलितुं च तदाङ्ग शेकुः॥११॥

“Terrified fawns wandered on every side, their minds bewildered by the forest fire. Even when their mothers released them as the flames advanced, the little ones could neither turn nor move.

इत्थं ज्वलत्यविरतं विकरालरूपे दावानलेऽतिविकला व्रजवासिलोकाः। शोकाकुलीकृतधियोऽन्यविचारशून्याः श्रीराममेव शरणं सहसा प्रजग्मुः॥१२॥

“As the fearsome forest fire burned without pause, the people of Vraja became utterly distraught. Their minds overwhelmed by grief and incapable of any other thought, they immediately took refuge in glorious Rāma alone. The people said:

हे राम राम रघुराम सदाभिराम हे लक्ष्मणाग्रज सदा कुशलैकधाम। सर्वाधिहन् निजजनव्रजपालनेऽपि किं सर्वशक्तिसमुपेत विलम्बनेन॥१३॥

“Rāma! Rāma! Rāma of Raghu’s line, eternally enchanting! Elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, unique and everlasting abode of welfare! Destroyer of every affliction, you possess all power—why delay in protecting your own people of Vraja?

Passage 14

डाकिन्याः कालरूपं विकटविदलनं वीरवात्यासुरघ्नं वत्साकारारिमारं भुजगगरहरं श्येनशार्दूलवारम्। यादोनाथाभिमानप्रसरनिरसनं शक्रकोपोपसृष्टा- सारत्राणातपत्रं विगतिशरणदं त्वां वयं संश्रिताः स्म॥१४॥

“You shattered the dreadful, deathlike Ḍākinī, slew the heroic whirlwind demon and the foe in a calf’s form, removed the serpent’s poison, and checked the hawk and tiger. You destroyed the swelling pride of the lord of aquatic beings and became a sheltering parasol against the downpour unleashed by Indra’s anger. We have taken refuge in you, who grant shelter to those with no other way. Brahmā said:

Passage 15

इत्यमभ्यर्थितो रामः स्वानां वीक्ष्य दवापदम्। उवाच यूयं सर्वेऽपि मुद्रयन्तु विलोचनम्॥१५॥

Thus entreated, Rāma saw his own people endangered by the fire and said, “All of you, close your eyes.”

Passage 16

ततः स्वयं पपौ रामो दुर्वारं दावपावकम्। क्षणान्निववृते तापः पशुपक्षिमहीरुहाम्॥१६॥

Rāma then drank the irresistible forest fire himself. In a moment the torment of animals, birds, and trees ceased.

Passage 17

इत्थं संशमिते दाहे दावपावकसम्भवे। गावो गोपास्तथा गोप्यः सर्वे भद्राणि लेभिरे॥१७॥

When the burning caused by the forest fire had thus been quieted, the cows, cowherd men, and cowherd women all regained well-being.

Passage 18

आकस्मिकदवोद्भूतमहानलनिवारणे। रामे विस्मितचित्तास्ते सर्वेऽप्यासन् व्रजौकसः॥१८॥

All the inhabitants of Vraja marveled at Rāma when he extinguished the great conflagration that had arisen so suddenly in the forest.

Passage 19

तमेतमासुरं दाहं शमयित्वा वनौकसाम्। क्रीडन् व्रजजनैः साकमियाय व्रजमीश्वरः॥१९॥

Having quieted that demonic blaze for the forest dwellers, the Lord returned to Vraja, playing with its people. Brahmā said:

अथैनमन्यतो नीत्वा बभाषे गोपपुङ्गवः। एष भद्रवटो नाम न्यग्रोधो बहुपादपः॥२०॥

The excellent cowherd then led the king elsewhere and said, “This many-rooted banyan is called Bhadravaṭa.

Passage 21

अत्रैव निहतौ रामलक्ष्मणाभ्यां महाबलौ। दुःसहो दुर्धरश्चोभौ क्रूरौ दानवपुङ्गवौ॥२१॥

“Here Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa slew two immensely powerful and cruel chiefs of the demons, Duḥsaha and Durdhara.

Passage 22

गोचारचतुरो रामो लक्ष्मणेन भ्रातृसङ्गतः। गोकुलानि पुरोधाय यदा गोष्ठाद्विनिर्गतः॥२२॥

“Once Rāma, skilled at tending cows and accompanied by his brother Lakṣmaṇa, left the cowherd settlement with the herds before him.

Passage 23

सर्वैर्गोपालसहितः सर्वभूषणभूषितः। तदा न्यविशतां मञ्जुप्रमोदवनमद्भुतम्॥२३॥

“Accompanied by all the cowherds and adorned with every ornament, the two brothers entered the lovely and wondrous Pramoda Forest.

Passage 24

ग्रीष्मेऽपि स्वगुणैरेव वसन्तायितमद्भुतम्। सौगन्धिकगिरिश्राविनिर्झरोदकशीतलम्॥२४॥

“By its own virtues the marvelous forest seemed like spring even in summer. It was cooled by waterfall water flowing from Saugandhika Mountain.

Passage 25

सरयूजलकल्लोलसङ्गिमारुतशीतलम्। कूजत्सारसचक्राह्वकारण्डवकुलावृतम्॥२५॥

“It was cooled by breezes accompanying the Sarayū’s rolling waters and filled with calling cranes, ruddy geese, and flocks of ducks.

Passage 26

कलहंसकृतोन्मादं राजहंसनिषेवितम्। सरोभिः पल्वलैः कुण्डैर्वापिकाभिश्च मञ्जुलम्॥२६॥

“The cries of geese filled it with rapture, and royal swans frequented it. It was charming with lakes, ponds, pools, and stepwells.

वटकल्पतरुच्छायासीनपक्षिमृगाकुलम्। कोकिलोद्गीतमनिशं सल्लिझङ्कारमञ्जुलम्। उत्फुल्लकुसुमामोदवाहित्रिविधमारुतम्॥२७॥

“Birds and deer crowded beneath the shade of banyans and wish-fulfilling trees. Cuckoos sang there without cease, the humming of bees was enchanting, and three kinds of breeze carried the fragrance of fully opened flowers.

Passage 28

तत्र प्रवालशिखिपिच्छविचित्रधातु- गुञ्जौघभूषितवपुःसुभगाः समस्ताः। रामादयो विविधकेलिविनोदविज्ञा- श्चिक्रीडुरात्तरसरञ्जनरक्तचित्ताः॥२८॥

“There Rāma and all the others looked beautiful, their bodies adorned with tender shoots, peacock feathers, many-colored mineral pigments, and masses of guñjā berries. Adept in many playful amusements, they played with hearts delighted and absorbed in rasa.

Passage 29

केचिच्च नृतुरन्योन्यमपरे युयुधुश्च ते। परे जगुस्तदन्ये च वाद्यानि परिदध्वनुः॥२९॥

“Some danced with one another, while others wrestled. Some sang, and still others made musical instruments resound.

Passage 30

वंशीवेणुविषाणादीनापूर्य मधुरस्वरैः। सर्वतो घोषयाञ्चक्रुर्गोपाः काननगह्वरम्॥३०॥

“Filling flutes, pipes, horns, and other instruments with sweet notes, the cowherds made the forest recesses resound on every side.

Passage 31

वैदेशिकनटार्हेण वेशेन परिशोभितौ। श्रीरामलक्ष्मणौ तेषां मध्ये युयुधतुः परम्॥३१॥

“Glorious Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, splendidly costumed like traveling performers, wrestled magnificently in the cowherds’ midst.

Passage 32

आहूयाहूय गोपालान् मल्लयुद्धविशारदौ। मध्ये मण्डपमत्यर्थमेतौ शुशुभतुर्वने॥३२॥

“Expert in wrestling, they called the cowherds forward one after another. The two brothers shone wonderfully within the forest pavilion.

Passage 33

क्वचिन्मण्डलमाबध्य वयस्यैरभ्रमुश्च ते। क्वचिच्चैवातिमर्यादं कुल्यादीनि ललङ्घिरे॥३३॥

“Sometimes they formed a circle and roamed with their companions; sometimes they leapt boldly over channels and other obstacles.

Passage 34

क्वचिच्चिक्षेपुरन्योन्यं कन्दुकक्षेपमात्मनः। क्वचिदास्फोटनं चक्रुः क्वचिच्च चक्रवद्भुजैः॥३४॥

“Sometimes they threw balls back and forth. Sometimes they slapped their arms, and sometimes they whirled those arms like wheels.

Passage 35

क्वचिद्गोपालवीरास्ते बाहुयुद्धविशारदाः। क्वचिद्वृक्षफलक्षेपैर्युद्धं ते वितेनिरे॥३५॥

“Sometimes those heroic cowherds, skilled in contests of strength, fought by throwing the fruits of trees.

Passage 36

क्वचिन्नृसिंहवाराहवामनाद्यवतारणम्। प्रदर्शयन्तश्चत्वारो भ्रातरो रेमिरे वने॥३६॥

“Sometimes the four brothers delighted in the forest by enacting the descents of Nṛsiṃha, Varāha, Vāmana, and others.

Passage 37

एवं विक्रीडतो रामलक्ष्मणादीन् व्रजौकसः। तुष्टुवुः साधुवादेन हृदयोत्साहवृद्धये॥३७॥

“As Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and the others played in these ways, the people of Vraja praised them with cries of approval, increasing the joy in their hearts.

Passage 38

नटमल्लवराक्रीडा गन्धर्वा इव गायिनः। महत्कौतूहलं चक्रुः प्रमोदविपिनेऽपरे॥३८॥

“Some acted like excellent players and wrestlers, while others sang like Gandharvas. They created a magnificent spectacle in Pramoda Forest.

Passage 39

कदाचिद्युध्यतो रामसुमित्रासुतयोरपि। दुर्धरो दुःसहश्चोभौ सखिवेशावुपेयतुः॥३९॥

“Once, while Rāma and Sumitrā’s son were wrestling, Durdhara and Duḥsaha came disguised as their companions.

Passage 40

शिखावलाकृतिः पूर्वो मेघवर्णाकृतिः परः। युध्यमानौ तौ चिरं ताभ्यां दूरे निन्यतुरासुरौ॥४०॥

“The first assumed Śikhāvala’s appearance and the other Meghavarṇa’s. After wrestling Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa for a long time, the two demons carried them far away.

Passage 41

तत्र तावतिबलोन्मदावुभौ रामलक्ष्मणनिपातवाञ्छिनौ। विक्रमं बहु वितेनतुः परं नानयोर्बलमसीममीयतुः॥४१॥

“There the two demons, crazed by their great strength and desiring to strike Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa down, displayed enormous prowess; yet they could not measure the brothers’ boundless power.

Passage 42

ततस्तौ वनवेगाभ्यां मुष्टिभ्यामुरसी तयोः। सन्ताड्य जग्मतुर्दूरे पुनराघातदित्सया॥४२॥

“Then the two brothers struck their chests with fists swift as the wind. The demons withdrew to a distance, intending to attack once more.

Passage 43

तौ मुष्टिमाबध्य समागतौ पुनः पद्भ्यां गृहीत्वा बलिनौ बलेन तौ। न्यपातयेतां कठिने शिलातले विचूर्णिताङ्गौ व्यसुतामुपेयतुः॥४३॥

“The powerful demons clenched their fists and came again. Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa seized them by the feet and forcefully dashed them upon hard stone. Their bodies shattered, the demons died.

Passage 44

शिलातलं चापि तदङ्गपाततः सञ्चूर्णितं तच्छतधाभवन्नृप। ततस्तयोर्मूर्धनि कल्पवृक्षजप्रसूनवृष्टिर्न्यपतत्सुरालयात्॥४४॥

“King, the stone surface itself was shattered into a hundred pieces by the fall of their bodies. Then a shower of flowers from heaven’s wish-fulfilling trees fell upon the brothers’ heads. Brahmā said:

Passage 45

ततोऽन्यतो नृपं नीत्वा बभाषे गोपपुङ्गवः। इदं स्थलं पश्य यत्र पूर्वं रामस्तृणानिलम्॥४५॥

The excellent cowherd then led the king elsewhere and said, “Look at this place where formerly Rāma encountered a fire in the tall grass.

Passage 46

निपात्य दैत्यं बलिनौ क्रीडन्तौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। तत्र गोपगणैर्नैक्षाञ्चक्रे गवां गणम्॥४६॥

“After slaying the demons, mighty Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa resumed their play. Amid it all, the company of cowherds failed to notice the herd.

Passage 47

गोकुलं तृणलोभेन सरयूकच्छभूगतम्। ग्रीष्मे सन्तापितं भानोः किरणैराकुलीकृतम्॥४७॥

“Seeking grass, the herd had reached the low ground beside the Sarayū, distressed and tormented by the summer sun’s rays.

Passage 48

विवेश सैकते नद्याः स्रोतसा रुचिरोज्झिते। इषीकाणां वनं यत्र प्ररूढानां समन्ततः॥४८॥

“It entered a sandy tract abandoned by the river’s beautiful current, where tall reeds had grown thickly on every side.

अथ सर्वे विचिन्वन्तो गोधनानि व्रजौकसः। खुराङ्कैर्दन्तसन्दष्टघासैश्चानुगता ययुः॥४९॥

“The people of Vraja then searched everywhere for the cattle, following their hoofprints and the grass marked by their teeth.

Passage 50

उपलभ्य गवां वृन्दं प्राप्तजीवा इवाभवन्। तावत्तृणाटवीमध्ये समन्तादुदगाद्दवः॥५०॥

“Finding the herd, they felt as though their lives had been restored. Just then a wildfire rose on every side within the wilderness of grass.

Passage 51

तयोर्दानवयोः कश्चित्सखा दग्धुमना व्रजम्। उद्ययौ ज्वालरूपेण निर्दहंस्तृणकाननम्॥५१॥

“A companion of the two demons, intent on burning Vraja, arose in the form of flame and consumed the grassy forest.

Passage 52

तमुद्गतं वीक्ष्य महातृणानलं गावश्च गोपाश्च महाभयेरिताः। तमेव देवं शरणार्थिनो ययुर्निवेदयाञ्चक्रुरथो भवागमम्॥५२॥

“Seeing that great grass fire rise, the cows and cowherds were driven together by fear. Seeking refuge, they went to that very Lord and told him how the danger had arisen.

Passage 53

गावो निरीक्ष्य मुखमीहितुरिन्दुचारु प्रोद्यस्य बालधिमतीव न रम्भमाणाः। दृक्सञ्ज्ञयैव जगदुर्महतीं निजार्तिं कारुण्यकातरधियो दवदाहभीताः॥५३॥

“The cows gazed at their protector’s moon-beautiful face. Raising their tails and too overwhelmed even to low, they communicated their great distress only through their eyes, their minds piteously agitated and terrified by the forest blaze.

Passage 54

पाहि प्रभो प्रथमवत्प्रथयात्मवीर्यं प्राप्तान्यनन्यशरणानि गवां कुलानि। अस्मांश्च केवलनिजाङ्घ्रिसरोजमूल- विच्छेदभीतिविवशान् करुणापयोधे॥५४॥

“Protect us, Lord! Display your own might as before. The herds have come to you with no other refuge; protect us as well, ocean of compassion, helpless with fear of being separated from the roots of your lotus feet.

Passage 55

इत्यात्मीयरुजं वीक्ष्य रामः करुणलोचनः। तान् मीलितदृशः कृत्वा सहसैवापिबद्दवम्॥५५॥

“Seeing the suffering of his own, compassionate-eyed Rāma had them close their eyes and immediately drank the forest fire.

Passage 56

संहारिते दावकृशानुपुञ्जे गावश्च गोपाश्च ततः क्षणेन। सर्वेऽपि ते भद्रवटं पुरेव सम्प्रापितास्तेन सुखाकरेण॥५६॥

“When the mass of forest flame had been consumed, that giver of happiness in an instant returned all the cows and cowherds to Bhadravaṭa, just as before.

Passage 57

दृष्ट्वा भद्रवटं गोपाः सर्व एव सुविस्मिताः। अहो अस्यानुभावोऽयं सख्युरस्माकमीदृशः॥५७॥

“Seeing Bhadravaṭa, all the cowherds were deeply amazed. ‘Ah, such is the majesty of this friend of ours!’

Passage 58

इति सर्वे प्रशंसन्तः पूजयाञ्चक्रुरात्मनः। आत्मानं सुहृदं चैव सखायं प्रियमीश्वरम्॥५८॥

“Praising him in this way, they all worshiped him as their own Self, their well-wisher and friend, their beloved Lord.

अभिरामो वृतो गोपैर्गोधनैश्चातिहर्षितैः। वेणुं विरणयन्नुच्चैराजगाम व्रजं प्रति॥५९॥

“Enchanting Rāma, surrounded by exultant cowherds and cattle, played his flute aloud as he returned toward Vraja.

Passage 60

व्रजवासिन आश्रुत्य रामलक्ष्मणयोः परम्। विक्रमं गोपवृन्देन कीर्तितं विस्मयं ययुः॥६०॥

“The residents of Vraja heard the cowherd company recount the supreme prowess of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa and were filled with wonder.

Passage 61

अहो अयं कोऽपि विभूषितो गुणैरिहावतीर्णः पुरुषोत्तमः पुमान्। सतां हितायाप्यसतामपास्तये त्रयीसुधर्मद्विजगोऽभीष्टदः॥६१॥

“Ah! This extraordinary Supreme Person, adorned with virtues, has descended here for the welfare of the good and the removal of the wicked. He grants the cherished good of the Veda, true dharma, the twice-born, and the cows.” Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे पूर्वखण्डे महाराजतीर्थयात्रायां व्रजागमने अष्टादशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः॥ ११८ ॥ “Thus ends Chapter 118, concerning the coming to Vraja within the great king’s pilgrimage, in the Pūrva-khaṇḍa of the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.” Source control note Chapter 118 occupies registered source leaves 812–817 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 813–818) and contains 61 numbered passages.
