तमन्यतस्ततो नीत्वा सुखितो गोपसत्तमः। दर्शयामास तत्स्थानं यत्र कालाहिमोचनम्॥१॥
“The excellent cowherd Sukhita then led the king onward to another place and showed him the site where the Kāla-serpent had been liberated. Sukhita said:
Passage 2
स्थानं तदेतद्राजेन्द्र सरय्वाः सरसि स्फुटम्। कोटितीर्थमयं राजन् कालाहिर्यत्र मोचितः॥२॥
“King of kings, this is that very place beside the lake of the Sarayū. Filled with the sanctity of ten million tīrthas, it is where the Kāla-serpent was freed. The king said:
Passage 3
वद कोऽयं कालसर्पः कस्माद्रामेण मोचितः। एतन्मे संशयं छिन्धि किं च तीर्थस्य कारणम्॥३॥
“Tell me: who was this Kāla-serpent, and why did Rāma liberate him? Dispel this doubt of mine, and explain what caused this place to become a tīrtha. Sukhita said:
Passage 4
राज्ञो भगीरथस्यासीत् सचिवो वै सुलोचनः। राजा भगीरथश्चासीत् गङ्गार्थं वै तपोरतः॥४॥
“King Bhagīratha had a minister named Sulocana, while Bhagīratha himself was absorbed in austerities to bring forth the Gaṅgā.
Passage 5
तपस्यति प्रभौ मन्त्री स्वयं राजधुरन्धरः। बभूव बहुवित्तेशो तन्निधाय भुवि न्यधात्॥५॥
“While his lord performed austerities, the minister himself bore the burden of the kingdom. He came to possess immense wealth and buried that treasure in the earth.
Passage 6
यावदायाति राजेन्द्रो जाताशेषप्रयोजनः। तावन्मृतिं गतो मन्त्री राजा तं चान्वतप्यत॥६॥
“By the time the king returned with his entire purpose accomplished, the minister had died. The king mourned for him.
Passage 7
अहो मम हितो मन्त्री कां गतिं नु गमिष्यति। स च वासनया तत्र निधौ सर्पोऽन्वजायत॥७॥
“‘Alas, my minister served me well. What destiny will he now attain?’ Through his lingering attachment to the treasure, the minister was reborn there as a serpent guarding it.
Passage 8
अनेकफणमालाभृल्लोलजिह्वाग्रभीषणः। जातिस्मरो भुजङ्गोऽसौ करालतरभोगवान्॥८॥
“That serpent bore a multitude of hoods, appeared terrifying with the darting tip of his tongue, remembered his previous birth, and possessed an immense, fearsome body.
Passage 9
स तस्मिन् विपिने घोरे हरेरिच्छानुवर्तिनः। लिहन् वनतृणं भूमौ संचचार कदापि वै॥९॥
“One day, in that formidable forest and moving under Hari's will, he traveled over the ground while licking the forest grass.
Passage 10
तल्लीढानि तृणान्यत्त्वा काश्चिद्गावोऽस्य दैवतः। तत्क्षणान्मूर्च्छितास्तावत् ततो वीरश्चुकोप सः॥१०॥
“By destiny, some cows ate the grass that he had licked and immediately fell unconscious. The heroic Rāma then became angry.
Passage 11
मूर्च्छाकारणमन्विच्छस्तासां रामः सुधानिधिः। ददर्श विपिने गूढं वल्मीकं तृणराशिभिः॥११॥
“Seeking the cause of their collapse, Rāma, the treasury of nectar, saw an anthill hidden in the forest beneath heaps of grass.
Passage 12
तत्र कौतूहली रामः सर्वदर्शनकेलिकृत्। सर्पाकर्षणकृद्वाद्यं वादयामास कानने॥१२॥
“Inquisitive Rāma, who makes every manifestation part of his play, sounded in the forest a musical instrument capable of drawing out serpents.
Passage 13
स तेन वाद्यध्वनिना विषं वमन् वल्मीकमध्यात्सहसोदसर्पत। तमेष रामः सहसा समाक्रमन् मूर्धस्वधिष्ठाय ननर्त कौतुकी॥१३॥
“Drawn by that music, the serpent suddenly crawled from the anthill, spewing venom. Playful Rāma swiftly subdued him, mounted his heads, and danced.
Passage 14
त्रुटच्छिरास्तस्य पदोपमर्दनैर्जगाद सद्यो भुजगः शिरःस्थितम्। भगीरथस्यास्मि दुरन्तपातको भुजङ्गयोनौ सचिवः समागतः॥१४॥
“His heads breaking beneath the pressure of Rāma's feet, the serpent at once addressed the Lord standing upon them: ‘I was Bhagīratha's minister. Through a terrible sin I have entered this serpent birth.
Passage 15
स पूर्वजस्ते रघुवंशकेतोरितीव विज्ञाय विमोचयस्व माम्। निधिश्च वल्मीकगतोऽनुगृह्यतां किमञ्चनार्थे विनियोजयस्व तम्॥१५॥
“‘That king was your ancestor, O banner of the Raghu line. Knowing this, please liberate me. Kindly take the treasure hidden within the anthill and employ it for some worthy purpose.’
Passage 16
तच्छ्रुत्वा रघुशार्दूलः पुत्रस्तव नृपोत्तम। जगाद मुक्त एवाहेः पादस्पर्शेन मेऽसि भोः॥१६॥
“Hearing this, the tiger of the Raghu line—your son, best of kings—said, ‘Sir, through the touch of my feet you are already freed from the serpent's form.’
Passage 17
ततो विहाय सचिवस्तां योनिं दिव्यविग्रहः। विमानाग्रमधिष्ठाय रामं नत्वाप सद्गतिम्॥१७॥
“The former minister then cast off that birth and assumed a divine form. Boarding a celestial aircraft, he bowed to Rāma and attained the blessed destination.
Passage 18
विलं निखन्य गोपालैर्ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽददद्धनम्। कोटितीर्थसमं जातं तत्खातं देवखातवत्॥१८॥
“Rāma had the cowherds dig into the serpent's hole and gave the treasure to brāhmaṇas. That excavated hollow became equal to ten million tīrthas, like a pool dug by the gods.
Passage 19
तत्र काकोऽवगाह्याम्बु सद्यो दृष्टश्चतुर्भुजः। तदावधि च प्रत्यक्षं तीर्थमेतदभून्नृप॥१९॥
“A crow immersed itself in the water there and was immediately seen in a four-armed form. From that time onward, king, this place became a visibly efficacious tīrtha.
Passage 20
ज्येष्ठशुक्लचतुर्दश्यां सर्पो रामेण मोचितः। तद्वासरे हि खातेऽस्मिन् यात्रासीत् प्रतिवत्सरम्॥२०॥
“Rāma freed the serpent on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight of Jyeṣṭha. On that date each year, a pilgrimage festival was held at this pool.
Passage 21
अहिखातं नाम तीर्थमिदं यः स्नाति मानवः। स घोरेणापि पापेन सार्पीं योनिं न गच्छति॥२१॥
“A person who bathes in this tīrtha called Ahi-khāta will not enter a serpent birth, even through the consequence of a terrible sin.
Passage 22
इति ते कथितं राजन्नहितीर्थस्य कारणम्। रामस्य पुण्यं चरितं तव पुत्रस्य भूपते॥२२॥
“Thus, king, I have told you the origin of the serpent tīrtha and the sacred deed of Rāma, your son, O ruler.
Passage 23
एतच्च सरयूमध्ये नागतीर्थं प्रचक्ष्यते। मणिमान्नाम नागो वै यत्र रामेण नाथितः॥२३॥
“This other place within the Sarayū is called Nāga-tīrtha. Here Rāma subdued a serpent named Maṇimān.
Passage 24
नागालयेऽस्ति मणिमानिति कीर्तितोऽहि- वर्यः शतेन शिरसां सुविराजमानः। तावन्मणिप्रकरद्योतितदीप्तिदीप्तो यः सारवे सरसि निर्भय आस तार्क्ष्यात्॥२४॥
“In the serpent realm lived the celebrated serpent lord Maṇimān, splendid with a hundred heads and blazing with the brilliance cast by the jewels upon them. He lived fearlessly in the lake of the Sarayū, safe even from Garuḍa.
Passage 25
प्रमोदवनमाहात्म्यात्तत्र वैरं न विद्यते। परस्परं वैरिणोऽपि निर्वैरा यत्समासते॥२५॥
“Through the greatness of Pramoda forest, hostility does not exist there. Even creatures who are natural enemies live together without enmity.
Passage 26
अहिशिखाबलयोरहिताक्ष्ययोर्मृगतरक्षुकयोर्महिषाश्वयोः। अथ परेष्वपि तत्तदुदीक्ष्यते न कलहः प्रमुदाटविवासिषु॥२६॥
“Thus no conflict is seen among the forest's inhabitants—between serpent and peacock, cat and mouse, deer and tiger, buffalo and horse, or any other naturally opposed creatures.
Passage 27
सुखमास्ते ततो नागः सारवे सलिले ह्रदे। कुल्यो गरलदाहेन तावत्संतापितोदकः॥२७॥
“The serpent therefore dwelt comfortably in the Sarayū's lake, though the water around his lair grew heated by the burning force of his venom.
Passage 28
गरोग्रदहनैः शुष्कप्रबलदाहनिष्क्वाथितं ह्रदस्य कलुषीकृतं जलममुष्य जन्तूज्झितम्। पतन्ति दिवि योजनादुपरि यत्र याताः खगाः कुलायविनिवासिनो निरसवो विषज्वालया॥२८॥
“The serpent's fierce poison-fire boiled the lake's water with overwhelming heat, polluted it, and left it devoid of living creatures. Even birds flying a yojana above it fell lifeless from the sky, struck by the flames of venom, together with those dwelling in nearby nests.
Passage 29
तस्मिन् ह्रदे कदाप्यस्य गावः पीत्वाम्बु मूर्च्छिताः। ता वीक्ष्य रामचन्द्रेण सुधादृष्ट्या सुजीविताः॥२९॥
“One day cows drank the water of that lake and collapsed. Seeing them, Rāmacandra restored them fully to life with his nectar-bearing glance.
Passage 30
तत एष ह्रदं तु सारवं सहसा निगरलं चिकीर्षुकः। निपपात जवेन तज्जले भुजदण्डश्रमभग्नतद्गृहः॥३०॥
“Wishing at once to free the Sarayū's lake from poison, Rāma plunged swiftly into its water and shattered the serpent's dwelling with the force of his powerful arms.
Passage 31
स उत्क्षिप्तमानसः प्रतिपदं श्वसन्नुदगतः प्रचण्डशतजिह्विकाललनभीषणास्यव्रजः। कृतः सपदि निर्जवस्तदभितो भ्रमन् क्रीडया रराज रघुपुङ्गवः प्रबलबाहुदण्डोर्जितः॥३१॥
“Enraged, the serpent rose, breathing heavily at every movement, his multitude of terrible mouths tossing a hundred fierce tongues. As he surged about and made the surrounding water lifeless, the foremost Raghu, mighty through his powerful arms, shone amid the encounter as though at play.
Passage 32
तावदस्य सुहृदश्च सखायो रामदर्शनवियोगसुतप्ताः। हाहहेति विलपन्त उदीर्णाः स्वान्तशोकविवशाः परिमम्लुः॥३२॥
“Meanwhile Rāma's friends, tormented because they could no longer see him, cried out, ‘Alas! Alas!’ Overcome by the swelling grief within their hearts, they withered in anguish.
Passage 33
अथायमुदगात्तस्माद्ध्रदादुपरि सौख्यदः। तावत्तमेष मणिमान् भोगेन निरवेष्टयत्॥३३॥
“Then the giver of happiness rose above the lake, but Maṇimān at once wrapped him tightly within his coils.

घनध्वान्तौघनीलेन भोगेनाहेः स वेष्टितः। आसीदावेगकृत्तेषां सुहृदां परिपश्यताम्॥३४॥
“When the serpent enclosed him in coils dark blue like a mass of dense darkness, the sight filled his watching friends with violent alarm.
Passage 35
नन्दिग्रामे महोत्पातान् वीक्ष्य सर्वे वयं नृप। आवेगान्निःसृता ग्रामं विहाय तमवेक्षितुम्॥३५॥
“Seeing terrible omens in Nandigrāma, king, all of us rushed out, leaving the village to search for him.
Passage 36
तस्मिन्दिने गृह एवासुरेते गोपालका वृद्धवयोजुषो ये। इतश्च चिन्तां हृदयेऽव्रजन्नरा नार्यश्च निःसृत्य वनं प्रविष्टाः॥३६॥
“The aged cowherds remained at home that day, but the other men and women, their hearts filled with anxiety, came out and entered the forest.
Passage 37
विचिन्वतोऽस्य पदवीं प्रमोदवनमध्यतः। आययुः सरयूतीरे यत्र रामोऽहिवेष्टितः॥३७॥
“Following his path as they searched through Pramoda forest, they reached the bank of the Sarayū where Rāma was bound in the serpent's coils.
Passage 38
तं पृष्ट्वा ते वयं सर्वे रुद्धजीवा इवाकुलाः। पतितुं सरयूवारिष्येच्छन् मूर्च्छितमानसाः॥३८॥
“Seeing him, all of us became distraught, as though our very lives had stopped. Our minds faint with grief, we wished to throw ourselves into the Sarayū.
Passage 39
पततोऽस्मान् समालोक्य लक्ष्मणो निरवारयत्। मन्वानो रामचन्द्रस्य प्रभावं देववत्स्वयम्॥३९॥
“Seeing us about to fall into the water, Lakṣmaṇa restrained us, for he himself understood Rāmacandra's divine power.
Passage 40
अथ क्षणेनामितशीर्ष उदचयो महाहिसंवेष्टनतो दयानिधिः। ततोऽहिवर्यस्य महच्छिरःशतं समाक्रम्य फणाग्रमास्थितः॥४०॥
“In a moment the treasury of compassion rose free from the great serpent's coils and their countless heads. He then mounted the serpent lord's hundred immense heads and stood upon the tips of the hoods.
Passage 41
नटन्नटवरोचितप्रचलिताङ्घ्रिकामश्रियः शिरःसु कृतमर्दनः कृत एव तान्युच्छ्रयात्। शनैरनमयदसृग्वमन्त्युपशमं गतानि स्फुटं वयं समभिवीक्ष्य तच्चरितमन्तरा नन्दिताः॥४१॥
“Dancing with the graceful footwork suited to the finest performer, Rāma pressed each head whenever it rose. Gradually he forced the hoods to bow; they spat blood and visibly fell still. Watching this deed, we rejoiced within.
Passage 42
तं नर्तुमुद्यतमवेक्ष्य वयस्यबाला वीणाविषाणपणवानकभूरिघोषाः। उच्चैर्नटन्तमहिमूर्धसु कन्धलीलां भूयोऽस्य लास्यमनुकृत्य सिषेविरे गाम्॥४२॥
“Seeing him begin to dance, his boyhood companions raised a great sound with vīṇās, horns, paṇava drums, and larger drums. As he danced high upon the serpent's heads with graceful movements of neck and limb, they imitated his dance and filled the earth with celebration.
Passage 43
इत्युपमर्द्य फणाः फणिनो नटराजोचितकेलिकलावान्। गोगोपीगोपतिकमनीयो विधिवन्नाट्यसहोत्सवं चक्रे॥४३॥
“Thus crushing the serpent's hoods, the Lord—master of playful arts worthy of the king of dancers and beloved of cows, cowherd women, and cowherd men—held a complete festival of dance.
Passage 44
तं विलोक्य खचराः सुरदेव्यो व्योमयानमुदपास्य नमन्त्यः। वन्दनीयचरणाम्बुजमाराद् गीतवाद्यकलनैरुपसेदुः॥४४॥
“Seeing him, celestial women left their aerial vehicles and bowed. They drew near his worshipful lotus feet with song and instrumental music.
Passage 45
सिद्धिवृन्दवनिताप्सरसां समूहैर्व्योमाकुलं समजनि क्षणतः समन्तात्। आः साधु दण्डयति नागमसावितोऽयं सर्वतः समुदगाद्भुवि चाम्बरे च॥४५॥
“In a moment the entire sky became crowded with groups of Siddhas' women and celestial nymphs. From earth and heaven on every side arose the cry, ‘Ah! How perfectly he chastises this serpent!’
Passage 46
जीवन्नुवेरितः स तस्य नटने काकोदरग्रामणीः कान्ताभिः खलु मोचितो व्रजपतेः कृत्वा स्तुतिं सूक्तिभिः। कारुण्यामृतसागरः स भगवांस्तेनापि भूयः स्तुतः तत्स्थानान्निरवासयत्तमुदकं चक्रे ततो निर्विषम्॥४६॥
“The foremost serpent remained alive beneath the Lord's dancing. His wives offered eloquent hymns to the Lord of Vraja, and the serpent was released. He too praised the Lord, that ocean of compassion's nectar. Rāma then banished him from that place and rendered the water free of poison.
Passage 47
इति गायति चरितमस्य भूपतेर्व्रजवासिलोकसुरवृन्दवीक्षितम्। विजहाति कालभुजगोद्भवं भयं पुरुषार्थसार उपसीदति ध्रुवम्॥४७॥
“Whoever sings this deed of the Lord—witnessed by the people of Vraja and hosts of gods—abandons fear arising from the serpent of Time and surely approaches the essential fulfillment of human life.
Passage 48
ततो द्विजन्मप्रवराः शुभाशिषः प्रयुज्यमानाः खलु नः समाययुः। वितीर्य तेभ्यो द्रविणानि भूरिशः समागताः स्वानि गृहाणि ते वयम्॥४८॥
“Then eminent brāhmaṇas came to us and bestowed auspicious blessings. After giving them abundant wealth, all of us returned to our homes.
Passage 49
प्राप्तप्राणाः कृच्छ्रतो दैवमात्राद् गोपा गोप्यो राममालोक्य हृष्टाः। सर्वे देवान् पूजयाञ्चक्रुरेते चक्रुर्मुक्तारत्ननिस्रञ्चनं च॥४९॥
“The cowherd men and women felt as though life had returned to them after a terrible ordeal. Rejoicing at the sight of Rāma, they all worshiped the gods and waved pearls and jewels before him as protective offerings.

रामाभिषेकं विदधौ सुप्रीता सत्कुटुम्बिनी। द्विजाभिमन्त्रितैस्तोयैः सारवैरमृतोपमैः॥५०॥
“My noble wife, filled with joy, performed Rāma's ceremonial bathing with fragrant, nectar-like waters consecrated by brāhmaṇas.
Passage 51
हुत्वाग्निं विधिवद्विप्रान् भोजयित्वा च तान् बहून्। अभिषिच्य शिवं चैव तस्य भद्रं ययाचिरे॥५१॥
“They offered oblations into the fire according to rule, fed many brāhmaṇas, and performed Śiva's ablution, praying for Rāma's welfare.
Passage 52
गोदोहसंभवं क्षीरमपायुञ्जन्न तद्दिने। रामस्य शुभमिच्छन्तः पुनर्गरलशङ्कया॥५२॥
“Desiring Rāma's good and fearing that poison might remain, they did not drink the milk obtained from the cows that day. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे दशरथतीर्थयात्रायां कालियदमनं नाम षोडशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः॥ ११६ ॥ “Thus ends Chapter 116, ‘The Subduing of Kāliya,’ within Daśaratha's pilgrimage in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.” Source control note Chapter 116 occupies registered source leaves 802–806 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 803–807) and contains 52 numbered passages. The chapter begins below Chapter 115's colophon and ends above the opening of Chapter 117. All five pages were reviewed directly against the scan in batches of no more than two high-resolution renders, and every passage has a continuous heading, matching Sanskrit terminator, and fresh English rendering.
