Passage 1
अन्यतस्तं सुसंनीय राजानं प्रेमविह्वलम्। उवाच सुखितो गोपो दर्शयिष्यन् प्रभोः कथाम्॥१॥
“Leading the king, who was overwhelmed by love, onward to another place, the cowherd Sukhita spoke, intending to reveal the Lord's sacred account. Sukhita said:
Passage 2
सौगन्धिकगिरिर्नाम दृश्यतां नृपसत्तम। पर्वतोऽयं महान् राजन् प्रमोदवनभूषणम्॥२॥
“Best of kings, behold the mountain named Saugandhika. This great mountain, O king, is an ornament of Pramoda-vana.
Passage 3
इह देवाः सगन्धर्वा गायन्ति विमलं यशः। रामस्यैवाभिरामस्य कोटिकामसुखाकृतेः॥३॥
“Here the gods together with the Gandharvas sing the stainless glory of beautiful Rāma, whose form embodies the delight of ten million Love-gods.
Passage 4
स्नात्वा शुचिमना राममिह भावस्व भूपते। पादाब्जधूलिसंपर्कात् कोटितीर्थत्वमागते॥४॥
“Bathe here, ruler, and contemplate Rāma with a purified mind. Through contact with the dust of his lotus feet, this place attained the sanctity of ten million tīrthas.
Passage 5
अस्य पर्यन्तभूमीषु नवशाद्वलसंपदा। शोभितासु स्वयं रामो गाश्चारयति भूपते॥५॥
“On the surrounding lands, resplendent with an abundance of fresh green turf, Rāma himself grazes the cows, O ruler.
Passage 6
जगन्मङ्गलमेतद्धि वृत्तं रामस्य संततम्। भाव्यते सत्परैः सद्भिर्येन चित्तस्य निर्वृतिः॥६॥
“This eternal deed of Rāma truly blesses the world. Good people devoted to the Highest contemplate it, and through it the heart finds perfect repose.
Passage 7
चतुर्वेदऋचो ह्येताः सर्वकामदुघा अपि। आसुरं भावमाश्रित्य कदर्थ्यन्ते खलैर्जनैः॥७॥
“These verses of the four Vedas are cows that can yield every desire, yet wicked people who take shelter in a demonic disposition abuse them.
Passage 8
तासां रामः स्वयं नेता परमैश्वर्यदण्डभृत्। अधिकारिविभेदेन दोग्धि कामान् सतो बहून्॥८॥
“Rāma himself leads those cows and bears the staff of supreme sovereignty. According to each recipient's qualification, he milks from them many worthy objects of desire.
Passage 9
कर्म ज्ञानं तथोपास्तिर्भक्तिरेतच्चतुष्टयम्। श्रुतिकामदुघां दुग्धं रामः पाययते निजान्॥९॥
“Action, knowledge, worship, and devotion form this fourfold milk of the wish-fulfilling cows of revelation, which Rāma gives his own people to drink.
Passage 10
एकैकं स्वैकान्तवशात्प्रत्येकं फलति ध्रुवम्। अनेकान्त्यात्परस्याङ्गं भूत्वा च फलति ध्रुवम्॥१०॥
“Each one certainly bears its own distinct fruit when followed exclusively; when it becomes a limb of the Highest rather than an exclusive end, it also assuredly bears fruit.
Passage 11
प्रमोदवनमेतत्तु भक्तिरूपं समन्ततः। तस्य भावतृणं प्राश्य प्रेमानन्दफलैव गौः॥११॥
“This Pramoda-vana is devotion embodied in every direction. Grazing upon its grass of sacred feeling, the cow bears the fruit of the bliss of divine love.
Passage 12
भावघासाशना नित्यं रसपानीयपानकृत्। श्रुतिकामदुघां पङ्क्तिर्भक्तानां स्वेष्टदोहदा॥१२॥
“The row of wish-fulfilling cows of revelation forever feeds upon the grass of bhāva and drinks the water of rasa; it yields for devotees what they most deeply cherish.
Passage 13
गोचारणक्रियातत्त्वमिदं ते कथितं मया। कीर्तितं श्रुतितात्पर्यविद्भिः सिद्धैः सनातनैः॥१३॥
“I have told you this truth of the act of cow-herding, proclaimed by the eternally perfected knowers of the Vedas' essential purport.
Passage 14
सौगन्धिकगिरे राजन् परितो विततान्तरम्। सौगन्धिकवनं नाम वनानामुत्तमं वनम्॥१४॥
“Around Mount Saugandhika, king, stretches the forest called Saugandhika, the finest of forests.
Passage 15
रामस्यातिप्रियं धाम यत्रातिविमलं सरः। सौगन्धिकवनोल्लासरमणीयसुधाजलम्॥१५॥
“It is a realm exceedingly dear to Rāma, where lies a perfectly pure lake whose nectarean waters are lovely with the splendor of the Saugandhika forest.
Passage 16
तत्र स्नाहि महीपाल धीयतां धेनुराशयः। श्रीराममनसस्तुष्ट्यै तीर्थपूर्णफलाप्तये॥१६॥
“Bathe there, protector of the earth, and fix your intent upon the herd of cows, so as to please Śrī Rāma's heart and obtain the full fruit of the tīrtha. Brahmā said:
Passage 17
तदग्रे चान्यतो नीत्वा राजानं गोपभूपतिः। उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठो मोहयन् कलया गिरा॥१७॥
“Then the cowherd king led the monarch onward to another place. That finest of speakers addressed him, enchanting him with his artful voice. Sukhita said:
Passage 18
अयं रत्नाद्रिरुद्भाति श्रीरामचन्द्रविग्रहः। धनुर्बाणाङ्किततनुर्धरणीतलपावनः॥१८॥
“This jeweled mountain shines forth as the very form of Śrī Rāmacandra. Its body is marked with bow and arrow, and it purifies the face of the earth.
Passage 19
अष्टयोजनसोच्छ्रायश्चतुर्योजनलम्बनः। योजनद्वयदैर्घ्येण सदामण्डितविग्रहः॥१९॥
“It rises eight yojanas high, extends across four yojanas, and is ever adorned with a form measuring two yojanas in length.
Passage 20
अनेकरत्नशिखरप्रोद्भासितदिगन्तरः। सूर्यचन्द्रप्रतीकाशो दिवारात्रं परिज्वलन्॥२०॥
“Its many jeweled peaks illuminate the horizons. Resembling the sun and moon, it blazes through both day and night.
Passage 21
अनेकोषधिसंदोहसंसेवितदरीगृहः। गुप्तमन्त्रसाधकैश्च मुनिभिः सुनिषेवितः॥२१॥
“Its cavern dwellings are filled with hosts of medicinal plants, and sages who practice secret mantras attend it devotedly.
Passage 22
अनेकाकरसंभूतिरनेकवनमण्डितः। अनेकद्रुमगुल्मौघलताजालाभिमण्डितः॥२२॥
“It gives rise to many mines and is adorned with many forests, embellished by multitudes of trees and shrubs and networks of climbing vines.
Passage 23
इह सरांसि तथा सरितोऽपि वै कति न सन्ति महीपतिसत्तम। स्नपयतो सलिलेषु तनुं निजां हृदयशुद्धिजमोदभराप्तये॥२३॥
“Best of rulers, how many lakes and rivers are there here! One bathes one's body in their waters to gain the abundant joy born of a purified heart.
Passage 24
सहजानन्दिनीकुण्डे रामकुण्डे मनोहरे। अनेकमुनिसंसेव्ये स्नाहि राजर्षिसत्तम॥२४॥
“Best of royal sages, bathe in Sahajānandinī-kuṇḍa and in lovely Rāma-kuṇḍa, both reverently attended by many sages.
Passage 25
यत्र स्नानाय मुनयो देवाश्चेन्द्रादयो नृप। वाञ्छन्ति विविधैः पुण्यैः प्राक्तनैः सुतपोभरैः॥२५॥
“Through varied merits accumulated before and a wealth of noble austerities, sages and gods headed by Indra long to bathe there, O king.
Passage 26
किं बहूक्तेन राजेन्द्र स्नात्वा चोभयकुण्डयोः। मुक्तिलाभमपि प्राज्ञास्तृणवन्मन्यते हृदि॥२६॥
“Why say more, king of kings? Having bathed in both pools, the wise regard even the attainment of liberation in their hearts as no more than a blade of grass.
Passage 27
परब्रह्मणि यत्प्रेम तद्वशीकारकारकम्। तदाशु लभते मर्त्यो नात्र कार्या विचारणा॥२७॥
“A mortal quickly gains the love for the Supreme Brahman that brings him under love's sway. There is no need for any deliberation about this.
Passage 28
एकदाहमिह स्नात्वा सहजाकुण्डपाथसि। यदपश्यं नृपश्रेष्ठ तन्न वाच्यं कथंचन॥२८॥
“Once I bathed here in the waters of Sahajā-kuṇḍa. What I then saw, best of kings, cannot truly be expressed in any way.
Passage 29
प्रश्रयावनतं तु त्वां दृष्ट्वात्युत्कण्ठिताशयः। कथयामि स्वानुभूतमत्यलौकिकवृत्तकम्॥२९॥
“Yet seeing you bowed in humility and inwardly filled with intense longing, I shall relate the extraordinary event that I experienced myself.
Passage 30
स्नातमात्रस्त्वहं राजन् दिव्यं लोकं ददर्श ह। अतीतं लोकसंस्थायाः कालमायाद्यगोचरम्॥३०॥
“The moment I had bathed, king, I beheld a divine realm beyond the structures of the worlds and inaccessible to time, māyā, and the rest.
Passage 31
रत्नौघहेमप्राकारप्रविस्तृतसुवेष्टनम्। कल्लोलिनीसुकल्लोलगम्भीरपरिखाञ्चितम्॥३१॥
“It was magnificently enclosed by broad golden ramparts covered in masses of gems, and graced by a deep moat filled with the lovely waves of a river.
Passage 32
पारिजातवनश्रेणीपरितो भूषितान्तरम्। दिव्यगन्धवहोद्वातपरिपावितमद्भुतम्॥३२॥
“Rows of pārijāta groves adorned it on every side, and wondrous divine, fragrance-bearing breezes purified it throughout.
Passage 33
सूर्यकोटिस्फुरत्कान्तिदिव्यरत्नशिलाञ्चितम्। चन्द्रकोटिशतज्योत्स्नासमुद्भासितमुच्चकैः॥३३॥
“Divine jeweled slabs flashing with the splendor of ten million suns covered it, and it shone brilliantly with the moonlight of a hundred million moons.
Passage 34
अत्यर्थमधुरोदीर्णदिव्यवस्तुविभूषितम्। विमानशतसंकीर्णदिव्यस्त्रीनिकराञ्चितम्॥३४॥
“Exceedingly sweet and exalted divine objects adorned it. Hundreds of celestial aircraft filled it, together with companies of heavenly women.
Passage 35
अनङ्गवर्धनात्यर्थरुच्यस्त्रीगानमञ्जुलम्। सर्वतः सर्वदोत्साहमाङ्गल्यगुणभूषितम्॥३५॥
“It was lovely with the exquisitely pleasing songs of women that awakened Love, and everywhere it bore the auspicious qualities of perpetual festivity.
Passage 36
परमानन्दसंदोहव्याप्तमत्यर्थसुन्दरम्। चिदानन्दमयालोकप्रकाशितदिगन्तरम्॥३६॥
“Exceedingly beautiful, it was pervaded by a profusion of supreme bliss, while a radiance made of consciousness and joy illumined every horizon.
Passage 37
तत्रानन्दमयं दिव्यं विपिनं तस्य मध्यगम्। महाकुञ्जमयं वेश्मरत्नमञ्जरितद्रुमैः॥३७॥
“At its center lay a divine forest formed of bliss, a dwelling composed of great bowers whose trees flowered in clusters of gems.
Passage 38
समन्ततः परिव्याप्तं लतामण्डपमण्डितम्। सप्तकक्षाभिरुचिरं महद्गह्वरमध्यगम्॥३८॥
“Spreading on every side and adorned with pavilions of vines, it was beautiful with seven successive courts and stood within a great secluded depth.
Passage 39
तत्र प्रथमकक्षायां गोपाला वीक्षिता मया। द्वितीयकक्षामध्यस्था वेत्रहस्ता मृगीदृशः॥३९॥
“There I saw cowherd guardians in the first court; in the second stood deer-eyed women holding staffs.
Passage 40
तृतीयकक्षामध्ये च ता एव हरिणेक्षणाः। एवं यावन्निजगृहं सर्वकक्षासु संस्थिताः॥४०॥
“Those same doe-eyed attendants occupied the third court as well; in this way they stood in every court all the way to the innermost residence.
Passage 41
मृगीदृशश्चन्द्रवक्त्राः कनकोज्ज्वलविग्रहाः। साक्षात्तडिल्लताकाराः सर्वलावण्यसुश्रियः॥४१॥
“Doe-eyed and moon-faced, their forms shone like gold. They resembled lightning vines made manifest and possessed every beautiful grace.
Passage 42
कन्दर्पकोदण्डनिभभ्रूभङ्गरुचिभूषिताः। अनेकभावपाथोधिवीचिविस्तारवीक्षिताः॥४२॥
“The lovely curves of their brows resembled Love's bow, while their glances unfolded like waves upon an ocean of countless sacred emotions.
Passage 43
चन्द्रिकाचयसश्रीकमनोज्ञविशदस्मितैः। कर्पूरनिकरोद्गारसौरभ्यगुणभूषिताः॥४३॥
“Their charming, luminous smiles possessed the beauty of gathered moonlight, and they were graced with fragrance issuing like masses of camphor.
Passage 44
कर्तरीपत्रमकरीसुकपोलयुगश्रियः। अनेकरत्नसंदोहजडिताङ्गगणश्रियः॥४४॥
“Delicate leaf-and-makara designs beautified their paired cheeks, and masses of many gems set upon their limbs enhanced their splendor.
Passage 45
कामकान्ताचमत्कारन्यक्कारकररोचिषः। साक्षाल्लक्ष्म्य इवासन् सौन्दर्यनिवहाञ्चिताः॥४५॥
“Their radiance humbled the wondrous beauty of Love himself. Laden with every abundance of loveliness, they seemed to be embodiments of Lakṣmī.
Passage 46
ततो महारत्नगृहं महासौन्दर्यभूषितम्। रत्नभित्तिसमुत्थांशुमञ्जरीचयमण्डितम्॥४६॥
“Then I beheld a great jeweled residence endowed with immense beauty, adorned by clustered sprays of light rising from its gem-set walls.
Passage 47
शृङ्गारसंपत्सदनं सदारसनिकेतनम्। अनन्तमानन्दकरं परमानन्दमन्दिरम्॥४७॥
“It was the abode of the wealth of divine romance, the eternal dwelling of rasa, the giver of endless joy, and the temple of supreme bliss.
Passage 48
लोकोत्तरगुणाक्रान्तं कान्तिसन्दोहविस्तरम्। पुष्पतोरणसंश्रान्तगुञ्जद्भ्रमरसंभ्रमम्॥४८॥
“Transcendent qualities filled it and a mass of radiance spread throughout it; buzzing bees fluttered excitedly among its flower-laden arches.
Passage 49
कोकिलाकाकलीरम्यकान्तासङ्गीतसंगतम्। रणद्वीणास्वरोच्छ्रन्मूर्च्छनानादनादितम्॥४९॥
“Sweet cuckoo calls mingled with the music of lovely women, and it resounded with rising melodic passages from ringing vīṇās.
Passage 50
तत्रेन्दुबिम्बोज्ज्वलमञ्जुमण्डपे महागणिस्तम्भसहस्रमण्डिते। प्रोद्भासि चिन्तामणिवृन्दनिर्मिते सिंहासनं हेममयं ददर्श ह॥५०॥
“There, within a lovely pavilion bright as the moon's disc, adorned by a thousand great jeweled pillars and fashioned from shining cintāmaṇi gems, I saw a golden throne.
Passage 51
तत्र श्रीसहजारामयुगलं भासते रहः। अन्योन्यदर्शनानन्दनिर्निमेषविलोचनम्॥५१॥
“There the divine pair Sahajā and Rāma shone in intimate seclusion, their eyes unblinking with the bliss of beholding one another.
Passage 52
अन्योन्यकान्तिपटलीविलिप्तान्योन्यविग्रहम्। अन्योन्यस्मितमाधुर्यसुधापानपरायणम्॥५२॥
“Each one's form was bathed in the other's massed radiance, and each was wholly absorbed in drinking the nectar of the other's sweet smile.
Passage 53
अन्योन्यगुणसंदोहकीर्तनासक्तमानसम्। अन्योन्यदत्तताम्बूलवीटिकारञ्जिताधरम्॥५३॥
“Their minds delighted in praising one another's abundant virtues, and their lips were reddened by betel morsels each had given the other.
Passage 54
स्वरकेलीविनोदेन समुद्दीपितमन्मथम्। अन्योन्यविग्रहादर्शबिम्बितान्योन्यविग्रहम्॥५४॥
“Their playful amusement in musical tones fully awakened divine Love, while each one's form appeared reflected in the mirror of the other's body.
Passage 55
अन्योन्यभूषणक्षेपचातुर्यकृतवर्णनम्। अन्योन्यविमलश्लोकभाषणासक्तिरञ्जितम्॥५५॥
“They displayed their cleverness in casting ornaments upon one another and were delighted by their eagerness to address one another in flawless verses.
Passage 56
मणिदिव्यमहारत्नस्तम्भोत्तंसभूषितम्। गुञ्जाफलमहामुक्ताफलहारमनोहरम्॥५६॥
“They were adorned like the crowning ornaments of pillars made from immense divine jewels, and charmed the heart with necklaces of guñjā berries and great pearls.
Passage 57
तडिन्नवघनाकारपीतनीलपटावृतम्। रत्नकुण्डलताटङ्ककर्णभूषणभूषितम्॥५७॥
“Clad in yellow and blue cloth like lightning and a fresh raincloud, they were adorned at the ears with jeweled rings and pendant ornaments.
Passage 58
श्रीवत्साङ्कमहोत्तुङ्गस्तनवक्षःस्थलप्रभम्। महाहाररत्नकटकवलयश्रीप्रकोष्ठकम्॥५८॥
“Their breast shone with the Śrīvatsa mark and lofty feminine beauty, while great necklaces, jeweled bracelets, and bangles beautified their forearms.
Passage 59
सर्वाङ्गभूषाविन्याससमुद्दीपितशुभाकृतिः। स्फुरत्तारुण्यकिशोरवयोऽवस्थाविजृम्भितम्॥५९॥
“The arrangement of ornaments upon every limb heightened their auspicious forms, which blossomed in the radiant youthful state of early adolescence.
Passage 60
कोटिसूर्यशशिद्योतिपादाब्जनखरोचितम्। प्रावृषण्यघनश्रेणीविद्युद्वल्लिचयप्रभम्॥६०॥
“The nails of their lotus feet shone like ten million suns and moons, while their splendor resembled clusters of lightning vines upon banks of monsoon clouds.
Passage 61
कन्दर्पकोटिलावण्यरतिकोटिप्रभाभरम्। तमालविटपालम्बिहेमवल्लीमनोहरम्॥६१॥
“They bore the beauty of ten million Love-gods and the radiance of ten million Ratis, enchanting like a golden vine entwined around a tamāla tree.
Passage 62
चित्राविचित्रा चेटीभ्यां वामदक्षिणपार्श्वयोः। दिव्यचामरयुग्मेन वीज्यमानं दिवानिशम्॥६२॥
“On their left and right, the attendants Citrā and Vicitrā fanned them day and night with a pair of divine yak-tail fans.
Passage 63
अन्याभिश्चालिभिर्दिव्यनानोपायनपाणिभिः। मुखचन्द्रचकोरीभिः समन्तात् परिवारितम्॥६३॥
“Other companions surrounded them on every side, carrying many divine gifts in their hands and gazing like cakora birds upon the moons of their faces.
Passage 64
कलाचन्द्रकलाभ्यां च सिंहासनवरादधः। महाहे स्फाटिके पीठे संवाहितपदाम्बुजम्॥६४॥
“Below the excellent throne, Kalā and Candrakalā sat upon a precious crystal seat and gently massaged their lotus feet.
Passage 65
रसिकासुरसाभ्यां च विधृते दर्पणद्वये। संवीक्ष्यमाणमनिशं निर्मलां वदनश्रियम्॥६५॥
“In two mirrors held by Rasikā and Surasā, the pair continually contemplated the flawless beauty of their faces.
Passage 66
संभावितप्रभावं च सहसाम्राज्यसंपदा। कोटिब्रह्माण्डजनकमहापुरुषपौरुषम्॥६६॥
“Their majesty was honored by the wealth of sovereign dominion, and their divine potency was that of the Supreme Person who generates millions of universes.
Passage 67
दाम्पत्यरसपाथोधिसमास्वादनपण्डितम्। दिव्यभोगकलादक्षमक्षीणगुणवैभवम्॥६७॥
“They were expert in savoring the ocean of conjugal rasa, skilled in the arts of divine enjoyment, and possessed inexhaustible magnificence of virtue.
Passage 68
इति सप्तमकक्षास्थैः सुरैर्ब्रह्मशिवादिभिः। अनेकसूक्तिसंदोहमुखरीकृतदिङ्मुखैः॥६८॥
“Thus the gods headed by Brahmā and Śiva stood in the seventh court, filling every direction with multitudes of hymns.
Passage 69
चातुर्वेद्योपनिषदां सूक्तिसंतानपल्लवैः। समन्ततः स्तूयमानं प्रसादलवलब्धये॥६९॥
“On every side they praised the pair with blossoming sequences of hymns from the four Vedas and Upaniṣads, hoping to obtain the smallest drop of grace.
Passage 70
तैरेव प्रहितैः किञ्चिद्विज्ञप्तिविनिवेदनैः। महितासुहितालीभ्यामानीतेभ्येत्यपत्रकैः॥७०॥
“Mahitā and Suhitā, their companions, brought written petitions in which those very gods had submitted certain requests.
Passage 71
वाचितैः सहसाज्ञातकोटिब्रह्माण्डवृत्तकम्। ततः पुरुषधौरेयं प्रत्याज्ञावाक्यकारकम्॥७१॥
“When the letters were read, the affairs of millions of universes became known at once; the foremost of persons then issued words of reply.
Passage 72
कोटिब्रह्माण्डनाथानां नन्दनोक्तीरनुक्षणम्। ऊर्मिला जटिला प्रोक्ता गृहीत्वा सस्मिताननम्॥७२॥
“Ūrmilā and Jaṭilā received with smiling faces the pleasing words spoken in response to the lords of millions of universes.
Passage 73
कोटिब्रह्माण्डजननं कोटिब्रह्माण्डसंस्थितम्। कोटिब्रह्माण्डनाशं च कोटिब्रह्महरीश्वरैः॥७३॥
“The creation, maintenance, and dissolution of millions of universes, carried out through millions of Brahmās, Haris, and Īśvaras—
Passage 74
पण्डिता कोविदाभ्यां च सखीभ्यां सकराञ्जलिम्। निवेदितमुपश्रुत्य विलोकितपरस्परम्॥७४॥
“—was reported with folded palms by the companions Paṇḍitā and Kovidā. Hearing it, the divine pair looked upon one another.
Passage 75
श्रिया पुष्ट्या सरस्वत्या कान्त्या कीर्त्या तथैव च। तुष्ट्येलयोर्जया चापि विद्ययाऽविद्यया तथा॥७५॥
“Śrī, Puṣṭi, Sarasvatī, Kānti, Kīrti, Tuṣṭi, Ilā, Ūrjā, Vidyā, and Avidyā—
Passage 76
शक्त्या च मायया नित्यं समुपासितदिग्बलम्। कटाक्षवीचिसंसिक्तचैतन्यपरमामृतम्॥७६॥
“—together with Śakti and Māyā, eternally attended the power that radiated in all directions, while the supreme nectar of consciousness was drenched by the waves of the pair's sidelong glances.
Passage 77
स्त्रीवेशयित्वा चात्मानं निगमैः समुपागतैः। सुदूरस्थं सखीवृन्दे मिलित्वा दृष्टमद्भुतम्॥७७॥
“The Vedas themselves assumed female forms and approached. Standing at a respectful distance, they joined the circle of companions and beheld that wonder.
Passage 78
धीरोदात्तगुणग्रामगरिमाञ्चितविग्रहम्। तथैव धीरललितगुणग्रामसुखावहम्॥७८॥
“The pair's form possessed the majesty of the complete virtues of the noble, steadfast hero, and likewise bestowed delight through all the qualities of the graceful, playful hero.
Passage 79
धीरोद्धतगुणागारविशिष्टतरवैभवम्। धीरप्रशान्तगुणकं योगिभिर्हृदि शीलितम्॥७९॥
“Their exceptional magnificence held the qualities of the proud, commanding hero, and their serenely steadfast virtues were cultivated by yogis within the heart.

अवेक्षितानादितह्रीमायादासीविभावितम्। कदा मयि प्रसन्नः स्यात् प्रभुरित्यवलोकितम्॥८०॥
“I gazed upon the Lord, attended by beginningless Hrī, Māyā, and the other serving powers, wondering, ‘When will this Master become gracious toward me?’

अनन्तगुणमाहात्म्यमनन्तश्रीभरान्वितम्। अनन्तकोटिकलितमनन्तैश्वर्यसंयुतम्॥८१॥
“Their greatness held infinite virtues and an infinite abundance of splendor; they were attended by endless millions and endowed with limitless sovereignty.

अनन्तोदारचरितमनन्तभवतारणम्। अनन्तश्रुतिसंगीतमनन्तज्ञानगह्वरम्॥८२॥
“Their generous deeds were endless, they carried infinite beings across worldly existence, endless revelations sang of them, and they were the immeasurable depth of knowledge.

ईदृशं सहजारामयुगलं वीक्ष्य सज्जने। तत्क्षणान्मूर्च्छितो भूत्वा जनैस्तल्पे निपातितः॥८३॥
“Having seen the pair Sahajā and Rāma in this form amid the blessed assembly, I fainted at once, and the attendants laid me upon a couch.

अहं तु तत्रैवागच्छं यत्र ध्यानं प्रवर्तितम्। सप्तमद्वारकक्षायां मूर्तिमत्या प्रवेशितः॥८४॥
“Then I returned to the very place where my contemplation had begun, and Mūrtimatī led me into the court of the seventh gate.

महामाणिक्यभवने गत्वा वासं सुविस्मितः। वन्दनं कारितो दूरात्ततः स्थानानि दृष्टवान्॥८५॥
“Entering the great ruby residence, I stood utterly astonished. Made to offer obeisance from a distance, I then beheld its many sacred places.

रासमण्डलमूर्जस्वत्कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभम्। क्रीडतः सहजारामौ यत्र गोपीकदम्बकैः॥८६॥
“I saw the powerful rāsa circle, radiant as ten million suns, where Sahajā and Rāma sport with companies of cowherd maidens.

शृङ्गारमण्डपं भास्वद्गुञ्जागारस्य मध्यतः। विभूष्येते सखीवृन्दैर्यत्र तौ रत्नभूषणैः॥८७॥
“At the center of the shining guñjā pavilion stood the adornment hall, where circles of companions decorate the pair with jeweled ornaments.

विशालमण्डपं श्रेष्ठं दिव्यं रत्नविनिर्मितम्। यत्र तौ रहसि स्थित्वा विलासं कुरुते भृशम्॥८८॥
“There was an excellent spacious pavilion fashioned from divine gems, where the two remain in privacy and sport together abundantly.

शय्यामण्डपमुद्दीप्रदीपिकाशतभासुरम्। सुरतान्तविनिद्राणौ यत्र तावालिवीजितौ॥८९॥
“The bed pavilion shone with a hundred brilliant lamps. There, wakeful after their loving union, the pair are fanned by their companions.

सुगन्धिपवनोद्भ्रान्तं भाति भोजनमण्डपम्। यत्र तौ किल भुञ्जाते स्वाद्वन्नं तच्चतुर्विधम्॥९०॥
“Fragrant breezes circulate through the radiant dining pavilion, where the two partake of delicious food in all four traditional forms.

केलीमण्डपमुद्भाति कोटिसूर्येन्दुसन्निभम्। आत्मानं पणयित्वा तौ यत्र द्यूतेन खेलतः॥९१॥
“The play pavilion shines like ten million suns and moons. There the pair play at dice, staking their very selves upon the game.

अभ्यङ्गमण्डपं भाति सौरभोद्गारसौभगम्। अभ्यज्येते सखीभिस्तौ यत्र स्नेहैः सुगन्धिभिः॥९२॥
“The anointing pavilion shines with the beauty of streaming fragrance. There their companions massage the pair with perfumed oils.

संस्नानमण्डपं भास्वत्कोटिरत्नसरोचिभिः। यत्र तौ स्नपयन्त्याल्यो गङ्गाद्यास्तीर्थशक्तयः॥९३॥
“The bathing pavilion gleams with the luster of ten million jewels. There the companions—the personified powers of Gaṅgā and the other tīrthas—bathe them.

धूपमण्डपमुद्भाति धूपसौरभमण्डितम्। तौ मुक्तचिकुरौ यस्मिन् धूपयन्ति सखीजनाः॥९४॥
“The incense pavilion shines, filled with incense fragrance. There the companions perfume the pair's loosened hair with aromatic smoke.

वसन्तमण्डपं भाति यत्र स्थित्वा प्रियौ च तौ। पुरस्तात्पश्यतो हेमपुष्पसर्षपकाननम्॥९५॥
“The spring pavilion shines, where the beloved pair stand and gaze upon the forest of mustard plants before them with its golden flowers.

ग्रीष्ममण्डपमुद्भाति हिमधामसुशीतलम्। अनेकजलयन्त्रौघैः सिच्यमानं समन्ततः॥९६॥
“The summer pavilion shines, cool as an abode of snow and sprinkled on every side by multitudes of water mechanisms.

वर्षामण्डपमुद्भाति कदम्बतरुमध्यगम्। यत्र स्थित्वा विलोक्यन्ते बलाकिन्यो घनालयः॥९७॥
“The monsoon pavilion shines amid kadamba trees. Standing there, the pair gaze upon flights of cranes and dwellings of massed clouds.

शरन्मण्डपमुद्भाति मल्लीकाननमध्यगम्। महाजलाशयोत्फुल्लकुमुदाम्भोजमध्यगम्॥९८॥
“The autumn pavilion shines within a jasmine grove, beside a great lake filled with blossoming night-lotuses and day-lotuses.

चन्द्रज्योत्स्नाचमत्कारविपुलाङ्गणभासुरम्। चकोरोरम्यतिक्वाणजाग्रत्पञ्चाशुगोत्सवम्॥९९॥
“Its broad courtyard gleams with the wonder of moonlight, while the charming calls of cakora birds awaken a festival of the five-arrowed Love-god.

फुल्लसप्तच्छदामोदनातिशीतोष्णमञ्जुलम्। मल्लिकाकुसुमामोदतरङ्गितसमीरणम्॥१००॥
“Neither too cold nor too hot, it is lovely with the fragrance of flowering saptacchada trees, and its breezes ripple with the perfume of jasmine blossoms.

हेमन्तमण्डपं भाति कुञ्जगह्वरमध्यगम्। हसन्तीभिर्हेमदिव्यनिर्धूमाङ्गारकान्तिभिः॥१०१॥
“The early-winter pavilion shines within the secluded depths of a bower, smiling with the golden radiance of divine, smokeless embers.

कर्पूरदीपिकोद्भ्रान्तं तूलगर्भपटावृतम्। रङ्गशय्यामनोहारिनिरुद्धपवनागमम्॥१०२॥
“Camphor lamps blaze within it; thick, cotton-filled curtains enclose it, and a charming colored couch rests where the entrance of cold wind has been barred.

वातायनसुसंलग्नशतखण्डमनोहरम्। अन्तरावर्तगम्भीरवीणामुरजनिःस्वनम्॥१०३॥
“It is lovely with a hundred panels fitted closely to its windows and filled within by the deep, circling resonance of vīṇās and muraja drums.

कुन्दकाननमध्यस्थं भाति शिशिरमण्डपम्। तैलसौरभसंमिश्रं पुष्पसारोत्थसौरभम्॥१०४॥
“The winter pavilion shines amid a grove of kunda flowers, its fragrance born from flower essences blended with perfumed oils.

वनानि द्वादशेमानि तत्र दृष्टानि भूपते। गुञ्जद्भ्रमरपुष्टानि नादितानि च कोकिलैः॥१०५॥
“There I saw these twelve forests, ruler, flourishing with humming bees and resounding with cuckoo calls.

शुकाङ्कनासमुद्भूतसहजारामनामभिः। सर्वतो मुखरीभूतदिग्दलानि दिवानिशम्॥१०६॥
“Day and night, every quarter rang with the names of Sahajā and Rāma issuing from the curved beaks of parrots.

वसन्तलक्ष्मीजुष्टानि पुष्पसंपत्तिभाञ्जि च। नवपल्लवरागेण शोभितानि समन्ततः॥१०७॥
“The forests possessed the splendor of spring and a wealth of flowers, and were beautified everywhere by the fresh color of new leaves.

सुवर्णलतिकापुष्पफलपत्रसमृद्धिभिः। विचित्रीकृतमध्यानि हरिन्मणिनिभैर्दलैः॥१०८॥
“Golden vines abounding in flowers, fruits, and foliage diversified their interiors, together with leaves resembling green jewels.

विचित्रपत्रजुष्टानि विचित्रसुमभाञ्जि च। वसन्तचित्रकारेण लिखितानीव सर्वतः॥१०९॥
“They possessed wondrous leaves and bore wondrous blossoms, appearing on every side as though painted by Spring himself.

इमान्येव च कुञ्जानि तत्र दृष्टानि वै मया। पुष्पसौरभसारौघसंपन्नानि समन्ततः॥११०॥
“There too I saw these bowers, filled everywhere with floods of the concentrated essence of floral fragrance.

“They held secluded places and jeweled pavilions, fragrant with the nectar of freshly blossomed lotuses.

राजहंसकुलक्वाणकलिते निर्मलाम्बुभिः। सरोभिर्मणिमाणिक्यबद्धसोपानपङ्क्तिभिः॥११२॥
“Their pure-watered lakes echoed with the cries of royal swans, and rows of steps built from gems and rubies descended into them.

सर्वतः सेवितान्यद्धा दिव्यगोपीगणैरपि। वीणामृदङ्गमुरजध्वनिकाहुलितानि च॥११३॥
“Divine companies of cowherd maidens attended them on every side, and sounds of vīṇā, mṛdaṅga, and muraja drums filled them with musical commotion.

नवोढाकेलिजुष्टानि मध्याप्रोत्साहनानि च। प्रौढाक्रीडनसंदोहसर्वतो रुचिराणि च॥११४॥
“They hosted the sports of newly wedded lovers, encouraged love in its middle stage, and were everywhere charming with abundant mature play.

तेषु दूतीसखीचेटीनर्मज्ञानां कदम्बकम्। अद्राक्षमहमत्यर्थदिव्यवेशसुवर्मणाम्॥११५॥
“Within them I saw companies of messengers, companions, attendants, and experts in playful wit, beautifully formed and dressed in exceedingly divine attire.

क्रियास्वनङ्गसाम्राज्यवर्धनीषु समाकुलम्। दूतानां च सखीनां च चेटकानां विटात्मनाम्॥११६॥
“Messengers, companions, attendants, and accomplished courtiers busied themselves with activities that expanded the sovereign realm of divine Love.

नर्मज्ञानां पीठमर्दप्रवराणां कुलं तथा। अपश्यं स्वस्वव्यापारे रसवृद्धिविधायिनाम्॥११७॥
“I also saw circles of witty confidants and foremost courtly assistants, each in their own occupation bringing about an increase of rasa.

क्वचिन्मानं क्वचित्तापं क्वचित्प्रणयरुषं तथा। क्वचित्कान्ताभिसरणं क्वचिद्दूतीप्रयोजनम्॥११८॥
“In one place there was loving pride, elsewhere anguish, and elsewhere an affectionate quarrel; here a beloved went to a rendezvous, and there a messenger fulfilled her purpose.

क्वचिद्दशो भूय शश्वत्तत्रैवानिशसंस्थितिम्। क्वचिदुत्कलिकामात्रं क्वचिद्विरहसंभवाम्॥११९॥
“In one place a condition arose and remained there perpetually, day and night; elsewhere there was sheer longing, and elsewhere the state born of separation.

दर्शं दर्शमहं भावान् प्रेमजानत्यलौकिकान्। मत्तवन्मूढवज्जाड्यं प्राप्तवांस्तत्क्षणेऽभवम्॥१२०॥
“As I looked again and again upon those extraordinary states born of divine love, I became at once intoxicated, bewildered, and insensible.

न किञ्चित् स्मृतवान् राजन् कोऽहं वा कुत आगतः। इत्यलौकिकभावेन संपन्नश्चकितोऽभवम्॥१२१॥
“I remembered nothing, king—not who I was or where I had come from. Filled with that extraordinary state, I was overcome with wonder.

ददर्श पुनरेवाहं सरयूं पावनीमिमाम्। रत्नबद्धद्विकूलाढ्यां मणिसोपानमण्डिताम्॥१२२॥
“Then I again beheld this purifying Sarayū, both its banks richly set with gems and adorned with jeweled stairways.

राजहंसकुलक्रीडानिक्वणाञ्चितपूरगाम्। शरत्कालशशिज्योत्स्नावलक्षजलकेलिनीम्॥१२३॥
“Its full current rang with the playful cries of royal swans, and its dancing waters gleamed white like the autumn moon's light.

उत्तुङ्गवीचिसंघट्टघटाटोपवकारिणीम्। लोलकल्लोलपटलेश्चुम्बतीं द्यामपि स्फुटम्॥१२४॥
“The collision of its towering waves made a magnificent spectacle, and its restless masses of billows visibly kissed the sky.

श्रीरामभक्तिसंपन्नमुनिवर्याह्निकेष्वपि। क्षमदात्रीं प्रमदात्रीं प्रेमानन्दमयोदकाम्॥१२५॥
“In the daily rites of eminent sages endowed with devotion to Śrī Rāma, it bestowed repose and delight; its water was formed of the bliss of divine love.

सौगन्धिकगिरिर्दृष्टस्तत्रैव सुमनोहरः। सौगन्धिकवनोपेतसरसीशतशोभितः॥१२६॥
“There I also saw the exquisitely enchanting Saugandhika Mountain, accompanied by the Saugandhika forest and adorned with hundreds of lakes.

तत्रैव चैष रत्नाद्रिर्दृष्टोऽत्यर्थमनोहरः। सुवर्णरत्नशिखरप्रोद्भासितदिगन्तरः॥१२७॥
“There too I saw this jeweled mountain, exceedingly captivating, its golden and jeweled peaks illuminating the horizons.

अनेककन्दरावेश्मरहस्यस्थानशोभितः। धनुर्वाणाङ्कितैस्तेजोभिः कोटिसूर्येन्दुभास्वरः॥१२८॥
“It was beautified by many caves, dwellings, and secluded places; marked with bow and arrow, its radiance equaled ten million suns and moons.

अनेकनिर्झरस्त्रावशीतलग्रावमण्डितः। नक्षत्रमालां गगने शिरोभिः संवहन्निव॥१२९॥
“It was adorned with stones cooled by the flow of many waterfalls, while its summits seemed to carry the garland of stars across the sky.

दृष्टं प्रमोदविपिनं सर्वमेतदलौकिकम्। दृष्टानि गोपीवृन्दानि प्रेममत्तानि सर्वतः॥१३०॥
“I saw the whole extraordinary forest of Pramoda, and on every side I beheld companies of cowherd maidens intoxicated by divine love.

पालीग्रामनिवासीनि दिव्यवेशयुतान्यहो। दृष्टश्च नन्दनो राजन् भ्राता मे प्राणसंमितः॥१३१॥
“Ah, they dwelt in the village of Pālī and wore divine attire. I also saw my brother Nandana, king, who is as dear to me as life itself.

तत्पत्नी च महोदारा दृष्टा श्रीराजिनी मया। सहजानन्दिनी कन्या संशोभितसमीपका॥१३२॥
“I saw his immensely noble wife Śrī Rājinī, with their daughter Sahajānandinī beautifully present at her side.

सर्वे चिदानन्दमया अखण्डरुचिमण्डिताः। गोगोपगोपीनिकरास्तृणकानां गणास्तथा॥१३३॥
“The cows, hosts of cowherds and cowherd maidens, and even the clumps of grass were all made of consciousness and bliss and adorned with unbroken radiance.
Passage 134
येषां दर्शनमात्रेण दिव्यो भावः प्रजायते। श्रीरामविषयं प्रेम वर्धते प्रतिवासरम्॥१३४॥
“By merely seeing them, a divine state arises, and love directed toward Śrī Rāma increases day after day.

भ्रममाणस्तेषु तेषु स्थानेष्वद्भुतकान्तिषु। न तृप्तिमानहं जातः पिबन्माधुर्यमुत्तमम्॥१३५॥
“As I wandered through one wondrously radiant place after another, I never became satiated while drinking their supreme sweetness.

सर्वत्र च मया दृष्टं सहजारामयोर्युगम्। कोटिनागरिकावृन्दसमुपासितमद्भुतम्॥१३६॥
“Everywhere I saw the wondrous pair Sahajā and Rāma, attended by companies of millions of refined lovers.

इत्यहं स्वप्नवद्दृष्ट्वा प्रबुद्धः सद्य एव च। विहाय मूर्च्छनामन्तर्ह्रदे समुपस्थितः॥१३७॥
“Having seen all this as though in a dream, I awoke at once. Emerging from my swoon, I found myself again within the lake.

तद्दर्शनजसंस्कारवर्धिष्णुविरहव्यथः। गृहे वने घने शैले न क्वापि स्वस्थतां भजे॥१३८॥
“The impression born of that vision caused the anguish of separation to grow. At home, in the forest, amid clouds, or upon the mountain, I found peace nowhere.

सा मे प्राणान्तकरणी महार्तिः समवर्धत। पाण्डुक्षाममुखप्रम्णा शनैश्चित्तापवर्धणा॥१३९॥
“That terrible anguish, capable of ending my life, continued to increase. My face grew pale and wasted as the burning of my heart gradually intensified.

अप्रतीकार्यमतुलं दुःखं विरहसंभवम्। अथ नेतुं शुको नाम योगीन्द्रः समुपागतः॥१४०॥
“The incomparable sorrow born of separation could not be remedied. Then the lord of yogis named Śuka came to guide me.

निर्जनं स्थानमालम्ब्य स्थितोऽहं तेन संगतः। पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयाद्यैः पूजयामास तं मुनिम्॥१४१॥
“I met him in a secluded place and remained there with him, honoring the sage with water for his feet, an offering of welcome, water to sip, and the other customary gifts.

पाण्डुक्षामतनुं दृष्ट्वा पृष्टोऽहं तेन योगिना। कच्चित्तव सुखं धीमन्नस्वस्थ इव लक्ष्यसे॥१४२॥
Śrī Śuka said: “Seeing my pale and emaciated body, that yogi asked me, ‘Wise one, is all well with you? You appear to be unwell.

अस्वास्थ्यकारणं ब्रूहि गोपराज सुखी भव। मादृशामतिथीनां त्वं हितोऽसि व्रजवल्लभः॥१४३॥
“‘Tell me the cause of your illness, cowherd king, and become happy. Beloved of Vraja, you are a benefactor to guests such as me.’

तदाहं मुनिशार्दूलं स्वाधिकारणमुक्तवान्। ततो हसित्वा मां प्राह सूक्ष्मदर्शी महामुनिः॥१४४॥
“I then told that tiger among sages the cause of my condition. The great seer, who perceived subtle truths, smiled and addressed me. Śuka said:

धन्योऽसि कृतकृत्योऽसि गोपराज नमोऽस्तु ते। यस्य साक्षात्सीतानाथधाम ते दृष्टिगोचरम्॥१४५॥
“You are blessed and have fulfilled the purpose of life, cowherd king; I bow to you. The realm of Sītā's Lord has become directly visible to your eyes.
Passage 146
यन्न वेत्तुं शक्नुवन्ति मुनयो योगशीलिनः। तपस्विनो ज्ञाननिष्ठास्त्रिकालज्ञा अपि स्फुटम्॥१४६॥
“Even sages practiced in yoga, ascetics established in knowledge, and those who clearly know past, present, and future cannot comprehend it.
Passage 147
तत्ते रामपदं साक्षादक्षरं ब्रह्ममध्यगम्। प्रमोदाख्यं परं धाम दृशोर्गोचरतां गतम्॥१४७॥
“That supreme realm called Pramoda—the very station of Rāma, imperishable and standing at the heart of Brahman—has entered the range of your sight.

एतद्धि तस्य कृपया जातं ते गोपभूपते। योगिनामप्यलभ्यं यत् प्रमोदवनदर्शनम्॥१४८॥
“This has happened through his grace, ruler of the cowherds, for the vision of Pramoda-vana is unattainable even for yogis.

अचिरादेव ते भाग्यं भविता नात्र संशयः। सहजावल्लभो रामस्त्वद्गृहेऽवतरिष्यति॥१४९॥
“Before long your great fortune will manifest—there is no doubt. Rāma, the beloved of Sahajā, will descend into your own home.

त्रिदिवेऽप्यहमश्रोषं यत्ते भाग्यं भविष्यति। पौलस्त्योपद्रुता देवाः साक्षाद्रामं ययाचिरे॥१५०॥
“Even in heaven I heard of the fortune that is to be yours. Afflicted by the descendant of Pulastya, the gods directly petitioned Rāma.

चतुर्मुखं पुरस्कृत्य गताः सर्वे दिवौकसः। सरय्वाः पुलिने रम्ये कुञ्जपुञ्जे मनोरमे॥१५१॥
“Placing four-faced Brahmā at their head, all the celestials went to the enchanting cluster of bowers upon the beautiful bank of the Sarayū.

तत्र प्रमोदविपिने राममन्दिरमद्भुतम्। कोटिसूर्येन्दुसंकाशं यत्र हेममणिक्षितिः॥१५२॥
“There in Pramoda forest stands Rāma's wondrous temple, shining like ten million suns and moons, where the ground is formed of gold and gems.

ऐरम्मदीयमतुलं यत्रामृतमयं सरः। तुलसीवनवातेन वीजितं यद्धिवानिशम्॥१५३॥
“There lies the incomparable nectar-filled lake Airammadīya, fanned day and night by breezes from a forest of tulasī.

चिन्तामणिमयं यत्र साक्षाद्रामनिकेतनम्। सखीदासीचेटिकाद्यैः पार्षदैः समलङ्कृतम्॥१५४॥
“There Rāma's own dwelling is formed of cintāmaṇi gems and adorned by his retinue of companions, maidservants, attendants, and others.

सखायो द्विभुजा यत्र धनुर्बाणादिभूषिताः। यत्र कामादिदोषाणां प्रवेशो नैव विद्यते॥१५५॥
“There his companions are two-armed and adorned with bows, arrows, and other weapons; faults such as mundane desire can never enter that place.

स तस्मिन् भवने भाति कोटिब्रह्माण्डनायकः। रामचन्द्रो धर्ममयः साक्षात्परात्परः प्रभुः॥१५६॥
“Within that residence shines Rāmacandra, the Lord of millions of universes, the embodiment of dharma and the supreme Master beyond the highest.

रतिकुञ्जे रत्नमये शयनं समधिष्ठितः। सीताकरसरोजाभ्यां संवाहितपदाम्बुजः॥१५७॥
“He reclines upon a couch in the jeweled bower of love, while Sītā's lotus hands gently massage his lotus feet.

श्रीवत्सवक्षा देवेशो वनमालाविभूषितः। कौस्तुभोल्लासितग्रीवः सिद्ध्यष्टकनिषेवितः॥१५८॥
“The Lord of gods bears the Śrīvatsa upon his chest and is adorned with a forest-flower garland; the Kaustubha illuminates his neck, and the eight perfections attend him.

“A flashing jeweled crown enriches him and makara earrings hang at his ears; great necklaces and strings of gems cast splendor across his chest.

“He is attended by the divine conch and discus, the shining Kaumodakī mace, an intensely red lotus, and the golden-yellow emblem.

“Nandaka the sword, Śārṅga the wondrous bow, and his other weapons, all obedient to his command, serve him devotedly.

“His yellow garment shines like lightning upon the dark raincloud of his body, and the Vedas—Sāma and the others—personified in visible forms praise him.

तस्य तद्विमलं धाम प्रमोदवनमद्भुतम्। तत्समीपे सुराः प्राप्ता ब्रह्माद्याः स्वस्वविष्टपात्॥१६३॥
“That wondrous Pramoda forest is his stainless realm. The gods headed by Brahmā left their respective worlds and approached its boundary.

तुष्टुवुर्विविधैः सूक्तैश्चतुर्वदनमुखोदितैः। तदन्ते प्रार्थयाञ्चक्रुरार्तिं स्वां विनिवेद्य ते॥१६४॥
“They praised him with varied hymns issuing from four-faced Brahmā's mouth. When the praise ended, they disclosed their suffering and offered their plea.

पौलस्त्योऽति दुराशयस्त्रिजगतां संदर्शयन् भीमतां तीर्णो नीतिपथं सदा समजुषामस्माकमुद्वेजनः। वन्दीकृत्य स नः सुरेन्द्रकमलां तापं तनोत्युच्चकै- र्दुष्टं तं प्रतिकर्तुमेव भवता सत्यं निजं स्मर्यताम्॥१६५॥
“‘The wicked descendant of Pulastya displays his terror to the three worlds. Forever transgressing the path of justice, he torments us who honor what is right. He has taken captive the lotus-like glory of the lord of the gods and greatly increases our pain. Remember your own true resolve and act against that evildoer.’

“The Lord then addressed lotus-born Brahmā in a voice from the sky, and Brahmā clearly apprehended it within his own meditative absorption.

“‘A cowherd named Sukhita dwells within Pramoda forest. I shall sport in his home, assuming my complete form.

तस्मै वितीर्णो मयका पुरा वरः स्वरूपगानन्दसुलब्धिहेतवे। तेनैव भाग्येन युतः स गोपतिः सत्येन चानन्यगतेन संयुतः॥१७०॥
“‘Long ago I granted him a boon so that the bliss of my own form might become easily accessible to him. Through that very fortune, the cowherd lord is joined to unwavering truth and takes shelter in no other.

प्रमोदवनलीलानामयमास्वादको भुवि। तस्य व्रजः सर्वसंपत्समृद्धगुणभाजनम्॥१७१॥
“‘Upon earth he will savor the līlās of Pramoda forest, and his Vraja will become a vessel of abundant virtue and every form of prosperity.

सदैव मम लीलानां स्थानभूतो भविष्यति। ब्रह्मा च तदुपाश्रुत्य यथावत्त्रिदशाञ्जगौ॥१७२॥
“‘It will forever remain a place of my līlās.’ Having heard this, Brahmā faithfully reported it to the gods.

“Therefore, fortunate Sukhita, I tell you exactly what will occur: Śrī Rāma himself will come into your home. There is no doubt.

“Hearing these words of the lord of yogis, I found deep peace. Though still burned by the fire of separation, I waited in hope.
