Passage 1

तदन्यतो दिशं नीत्वा राजानं सुखितोऽब्रवीत्। उवाच वचनं भूयो रामलीलारसालयम्॥१॥

“Sukhita then led the king in another direction and spoke again, his words a treasury of the nectar of Rāma's līlā. Sukhita said:

स्थानं च तदिदं राजन् यत्र रामो व्यचूर्णयत्। शयानोऽधःस्थितां खट्वां विधाय तिलशः क्षणात्॥२॥

“King, this is the place where Rāma, while lying down, reduced the cot beneath him to particles as small as sesame seeds in a single moment.

दृष्ट्वा तत्रस्थितैर्बालैरूचे पूर्ववदद्भुतम्। पुरुषो मुद्गरकरः करालवदनाकृतिः॥३॥

“The children who stood there and witnessed it described another wonder, just as before: ‘A man appeared with a mace in his hand and a fearsome face.

Passage 4

प्रांशुर्घोरतराकारो मेघमेचकविग्रहः। पश्यतां नः क्षणादेत्य खट्वां राक्षस आविशत्॥४॥

“‘Tall, exceedingly terrible in form, and dark-bodied like a rain cloud, the Rākṣasa came in an instant before our eyes and entered the cot.

खट्वेयं रामशिशुना मुष्टिसंधयतोच्चकैः। चूर्णिता तिलशः कृत्वा गजदन्तमयी जवात्॥५॥

“‘The ivory cot was swiftly smashed into sesame-sized fragments by the child Rāma as he struck it forcefully with his fists.

Passage 6

संचूर्णितायां खट्वायां राक्षसः पुनरुद्गतः। दुष्टो मुद्गरमादाय धावमानोऽस्य सम्मुखम्॥६॥

“‘When the cot had been pulverized, the wicked Rākṣasa rose from it again, seized his mace, and charged straight toward him.

यावत्पातयते शस्त्रं तावद्बालपदाहतः। पतितोऽत्र विवृत्याङ्गं डाकिन्याः सोदरो यथा॥७॥

“‘Just as he was about to bring down his weapon, the child's foot struck him. He fell here with his limbs spread out, like the Ḍākinī's own brother.

भूयोऽस्य वदनात्तेजो विनिर्गम्योडुसन्निभम्। प्राप्य रामस्यैव वपुस्तत्क्षणेन व्यनश्यत॥८॥

“‘Once again, a radiance like the sun issued from his mouth, reached Rāma's very body, and vanished into it that instant.

इदमद्भुतमाकर्ण्य वृत्तं रामस्य दुष्करम्। पूजयन्तः शिशून् सर्वान् गोपालाश्चकिता इव॥९॥

“On hearing of this wondrous and extraordinary feat of Rāma, the cowherds, still bewildered, honored all the children.

Passage 10

अहं च विप्रानामन्त्र्य मन्त्रै रक्षोघ्नकल्पकैः। अरक्षयं मुहू राजन् सर्वाङ्गप्राणजीवनम्॥१०॥

“I too summoned Brāhmaṇas and repeatedly protected our life-giving child in every limb with formulas prescribed for driving away Rākṣasas.

Passage 11

हुत्वाग्नौ विविधैर्मन्त्रैर्बालरक्षाविधायकैः। ग्रहाणां चाहुतीर्दत्त्वा स्नापितो मन्त्रिताम्भसा॥११॥

“They offered into the fire with many formulas ordained for a child's protection, gave oblations to the planetary powers, and bathed him in consecrated water.

राजिकां लवणैः सार्धं निर्मथ्य प्राणजीवने। अपातयन् गोपदारा विकीर्य सर्वतो दिशम्॥१२॥

“The cowherd women rubbed mustard seed together with salt around the child who was our very life, then scattered it in every direction.

गोपुच्छभ्रामणं चास्य विदधुः सर्वविग्रहे। अरक्षयंश्च फूत्कारैर्मन्त्रसिद्धमुखोद्गतैः॥१३॥

“They circled a cow's tail over his whole body and protected him with breaths blown from mouths empowered by mantra.

योगिभिश्च कृते नादे व्रजे विघ्नान् न्यवारयन्। मयूरपिच्छमुष्ट्या च रक्षां चक्रुः सुकातराः॥१४॥

“With ritual sounds made by yogins they warded obstacles away from Vraja, and, deeply anxious, performed protection with a bundle of peacock feathers.

इत्येवं शमितो विघ्नः सारिष्टः साशुभप्रदः। व्रजदारैर्हितपरै रामस्य शुभकाङ्क्षिभिः॥१५॥

“Thus the threatening, ill-omened danger was quieted by the people of Vraja, who were intent upon his welfare and desired only Rāma's good.

Passage 16

नारदस्य मुखाद्राजन् श्रुतं वृत्तमनन्तरम्। रावणप्रेषितोऽयं वै विकटाख्यो महासुरः॥१६॥

“Afterward, king, I heard the account from Nārada's own mouth: this great demon named Vikaṭa had indeed been sent by Rāvaṇa.

Passage 17

हतः स्वेनैव पापेन परापकृतितत्परः। बहवो निहतास्तेन शिशवो निद्रयावशाः॥१७॥

“Intent upon injuring others, he was destroyed by his own sin. He had killed many children while they lay overcome by sleep.

ततश्च परमस्माभिरप्रमादैरिहस्थितैः। प्राणजीवनरक्षायां तत्परैर्धर्मतत्परैः॥१८॥

“Thereafter we remained here with the utmost vigilance, wholly intent upon protecting the child who was our very life and devoted to dharma.

Passage 19

अन्तःपुरे हिततमाः स्थापिताः वृद्धमातरः। अप्रवेशश्च सर्वेषां यस्य कस्याप्यनागमः॥१९॥

“The most trusted elderly mothers were stationed in the inner chambers. No one at all was admitted, and no unknown person could enter.

Passage 20

बहिर्निःसरणं चास्य विशेषेण विवर्जितम्। स्वहस्तादर्जितं दुग्धं मम गेहिन्यपाययत्॥२०॥

“His going outside was especially forbidden, and my wife fed him only milk that she herself had drawn with her own hands.

Passage 21

अदृष्टिभोजनं चैव सदृष्टोदकसेवनम्। जनसंचाररहिते देशे स्वापस्तथासनम्॥२१॥

“His food was kept beyond strangers' sight, and he drank water only under watch. He slept and sat only in a place free from the traffic of people.

अवधानपरैरेभिः सदा स्थापितः प्रभो। यतो व्रजे नः सर्वेषां रामो जीवातुरेधताम्॥२२॥

“Lord, he was always surrounded by attendants devoted to watchfulness, for Rāma was the very source of life for every one of us in Vraja. Brahmā said:

Passage 23

श्रुत्वा गोपपतेर्वाक्यं विस्मितो नृपसत्तमः। तत्स्थाने परमे तीर्थे सर्वाङ्गस्नानमाचरत्॥२३॥

“Astonished upon hearing the cowherd chief's words, the excellent king bathed his entire body at that place, which had become a supreme tīrtha.

तदन्यां च दिशं तेन संप्राप्य नृपसत्तमः। उक्तो गोपालपतिना स्थानं निर्दिश्य सादरम्॥२४॥

“The excellent king then went with him in another direction. Pointing out the place with reverence, the cowherd chief spoke.

Passage 25

इदं तत्स्थानमतुलं यत्र क्रीडन् शिशुर्भुवि। हृतो वात्याजवेनाङ्गं प्रापितो घोररक्षसा॥२५॥

“This is that incomparable place where the child, while playing upon the ground, was swept away at whirlwind speed and carried bodily aloft by a terrible Rākṣasa.

Passage 26

निहत्य गगने रक्षो गलग्रहपरासुकम्। अपातयच्छिलापृष्ठे विचूर्णिततनुं जवात्॥२६॥

“After killing the Rākṣasa in the sky by seizing his throat and taking his life, the child hurled his pulverized body swiftly onto the surface of a rock.

स वै वात्यास्वरूपेण प्राप्तो घोरतमोऽसुरः। निहतः स्वेन पापेन भाग्यरेष च जीवितः॥२७॥

“That most terrible demon had come in the form of a whirlwind. He was destroyed by his own sin, while this child lived on through blessed fortune.

इतश्च नृपशार्दूल दत्तदृष्टिर्विलोकय। अत्र मत्प्राङ्गणे रूढः पातितोऽनेन भूरुहः॥२८॥

“And now, tiger among kings, direct your gaze here and look: this tree that grew in my courtyard was brought down by him.

Passage 29

एकदा राजशार्दूल देवानां च द्विजन्मनाम्। आमन्त्र्य भोजनार्थाय चक्रेऽन्नानि कुटुम्बिनी॥२९॥

“Once, tiger among kings, my wife invited the gods and the twice-born to a feast and prepared foods for them.

व्यञ्जनानि च भूयांसि शाकानि विविधानि च। फलानि च सुपक्वानि नानाजातीनि मद्गृहे॥३०॥

“In my house she made abundant dishes and many kinds of vegetables and assembled fully ripened fruits of numerous varieties.

अनेकधा कृताः स्निग्धा द्विदलाश्च विशेषतः। वटकाश्च पूपिकाश्च तथा पूरणपूरिकाः॥३१॥

“She prepared rich pulses in many ways, especially split pulses, along with vaṭakas, little cakes, and filled pastries.

शष्कुल्यो मण्डकाश्चैव बहुशः खण्डमण्डकाः। आदर्शाश्चेन्दुसङ्काशास्तथैव जलवल्लिकाः॥३२॥

“There were śaṣkulīs, maṇḍakas, many sugar maṇḍakas, mirror-like sweets bright as the moon, and delicacies called jalavallikās.

शर्करापारिकाः स्निग्धा दध्यपूपाश्च भूरिशः। पायसापूपकाश्चैव तथा कर्पूरनाडिकाः॥३३॥

“There were rich sugar pastries, abundant cakes made with yogurt, cakes of sweet rice, and camphor-scented nāḍikās.

Passage 34

नवनीतापूपकाश्च फेणिकाश्च महोज्ज्वलाः। माठिकाः खाद्यपूपाश्च तथा पापचिकाः शुभाः॥३४॥

“There were butter cakes, splendidly bright pheṇikās, māṭhikās, edible cakes, and fine pāpacikās.

चक्रिकाः क्षीरचक्राश्च बर्बराश्च महत्तराः। लड्डुकानां जातयश्च मोदकानां च जातयः॥३५॥

“There were cakrikās, milk wheels, great barbaras, and many varieties of laḍḍukas and modakas.

सितया मण्डिताः पूपा अनेकविधपूरिकाः। विधाय मत्कुटुम्बिन्या सर्वतः सद्म पूरितम्॥३६॥

“My wife made cakes adorned with sugar and many kinds of filled breads until the house was full on every side.

घृताक्तानि सुगन्धीनि सिताक्तानि सितानि च। पक्वान्नानि विनिर्माय पात्राणि समपूरयत्॥३७॥

“She prepared fragrant cooked foods bathed in ghee, white and coated in sugar, and filled all the vessels with them.

Passage 38

गतान्यहानि सप्तास्याः संविधाय विनिर्मितौ। पाकक्रियाप्रवीणानां प्रावीण्यं च परीक्षितम्॥३८॥

“Seven days passed in her arranging and producing everything, and the skill of those accomplished in cookery was thoroughly tested.

Passage 39

तस्यां रात्रौ ततः सूदाः सर्वपाकान् विनिर्ममुः। सुशालिभक्तावरणशाकादीन् स्वादुवत्तमान्॥३९॥

“That night the cooks completed every preparation, including fine śāli rice, accompanying vegetables, and the most excellent savory dishes.

Passage 40

अथ कौतूहलो रामो बालकः सह सर्वशः। विधाय सद्मनि च्छिद्रं भित्तौ पश्चिमतो दिशि॥४०॥

“Then the inquisitive child Rāma, together with all his companions, made an opening in the western wall of the house.

Passage 41

पक्वान्नानि समस्तानि समादाय यदृच्छया। मृगान् संभोजयामास प्रमोदवनवासिनः॥४१॥

“Taking all the cooked foods as he pleased, he fed the animals who lived in Pramodavana.

Passage 42

मृगान् शाखामृगांश्चैव गवयान् महिषांस्तथा। कोलान् गौरखरांश्चैव शुनो मार्जारकांस्तथा॥४२॥

“He fed deer and tree-dwelling monkeys, wild oxen and buffaloes, boars and wild asses, as well as dogs and cats.

Passage 43

तरक्षून् शशकांश्चैव क्रोष्टूंस्तज्जननीस्तथा। भल्लूकांश्चैव गोधेरान् शरभान् मूषकांस्तथा॥४३॥

“He fed hyenas, hares, jackals and their mothers, bears, monitor lizards, śarabhas, and mice.

Passage 44

पक्षिणोऽनेकजातीयानाहूयाहूय कौतुकी। पक्वान्नैर्भोजयामास ब्राह्मणार्थोपकल्पितैः॥४४॥

“Delightedly calling birds of many kinds again and again, he fed them the cooked foods that had been prepared for the Brāhmaṇas.

Passage 45

पारावतान् मयूरांश्च चाषान् परभृतांस्तथा। कोकिलांश्च शुकांश्चैव श्येनोलूकांश्च वायसान्॥४५॥

“He called pigeons and peacocks, blue jays and cuckoos, kokilas and parrots, hawks, owls, and crows.

ते तर्पिता रामकरोपनीतैः पक्वान्नसंघैर्मधुरैर्मनोज्ञैः। उदीरयन्तो निनदान् प्रजग्मुरधिप्रमोदाटविकेलिकुञ्जान्॥४६॥

“Satisfied by the delightful, sweet masses of cooked food offered from Rāma's hand, they raised their various cries and returned to the pleasure groves deep within the forest of Pramoda.

Passage 47

रामस्य यूथात् कोऽपि गोपालबालः संजातभेदः सहसागत्य तेभ्यः। निवेदयामास तदेव वृत्तं कुटुम्बिन्यै गृहकार्याकुलायै॥४७॥

“One cowherd boy from Rāma's group broke ranks, hurried back from the others, and reported the whole affair to my wife while she was busy with household work.

Passage 48

बलादुपश्रुत्य समस्तमेतद् रामस्य संचेष्टितमात्मबन्धोः। संजातरोषा गृहिणी मदीया पक्वान्नगेहं सहसा जगाम॥४८॥

“Compelled to hear all about the deed of Rāma, her own beloved child, my wife became angry and hurried to the storeroom of cooked food.

Passage 49

भाण्डागारं स्वयमेषा विलोक्य विकीर्णपक्वान्नकदम्बकं तत्। गृहीतयष्टिः कुपिता प्रयत्नाज्जवेन रामाभिमुखं जगाम॥४९॥

“Seeing for herself that heaps of cooked food lay scattered through the storeroom, she angrily seized a stick and strode quickly toward Rāma.

Passage 50

स बालयूथस्थित एनां निरीक्ष्य सवेत्रहस्तां जननीं ताडनोद्यताम्। पलायितो दूरतरं जवेन सा तत्पृष्ठलग्ना व्यचलत् कृपान्विता॥५०॥

“Standing among the band of children, he saw his mother approaching with a cane in her hand, ready to strike. He fled far away at speed, while she, affection still within her, followed close behind him.

Passage 51

तत्स्थानादेष बालः पलाय्य मध्ये गृहं तत्र निलीय तस्थौ। गवेषयन्त्या प्रतिसद्म चाम्बया क्रमेण तत्रैत्य निरीक्षितः शिशुः॥५१॥

“The child escaped from that place and hid inside a house. His mother searched each dwelling in turn until she came there and found him.

Passage 52

एकान्तचारी विरुदन्नुदश्रुणी विलोचने अञ्जनपूर्णपक्ष्मणी। सृजन् कराम्भोजयुगेन शोभिना निकेतकोणोपगतोऽतिभास्वरः॥५२॥

“Alone in a corner of the house, the radiant child was crying, his collyrium-darkened lashes framing two tearful eyes as his beautiful lotus hands wiped away the flowing tears.

तमादाय ततो गोपी रूपातिशयभूषिता। न ताडितवती यष्ट्या वात्सल्यस्नेहमोहिता॥५३॥

“The extraordinarily beautiful cowherd woman then took him up. Overcome by maternal tenderness and affection, she could not strike him with the stick.

Passage 54

तमानीयाङ्गणस्थेन तरुणायुष्यशालिना। बबन्ध करयोर्दाम्ना बालं क्रीडनकारिणम्॥५४॥

“Bringing the playful child back into the courtyard, she bound his two hands with a rope beside the vigorous young tree that stood there.

Passage 55

पुनश्च पक्वान्नगृहं समेत्य निरीक्षते यावदसौ वसूनि। तावत्समस्तं परिपूर्णमेव प्रपश्यती मुमुदे मानसेन॥५५॥

“When she returned to the food store and looked again at its provisions, she saw everything completely replenished and rejoiced in her heart.

Passage 56

रामश्च तेन तरुणा कल्पवृक्षसमत्विषा। निबद्धः करयोर्मात्रा यावदाक्षिपते गुणम्॥५६॥

“Meanwhile Rāma, whose hands his mother had bound to that young tree shining like a wish-fulfilling tree, began to pull upon the cord.

Passage 57

तावदुन्मूलितो वृक्ष आमूलाद् भूरिविस्तरः। गगनस्पर्शिविटपस्कन्धस्तुङ्गशिखाधरः॥५७॥

“At once the vast tree was uprooted from its very roots, though its trunk and branches touched the sky and it bore a lofty crown.

तरुर्महोच्छ्रायविभूषितो जवात् सनिष्पतन् भूतलमीरितस्वनः। रामस्य पर्यन्तचरैः शिशुव्रजैर्निरीक्षितो भूरिफलप्रसूनधृक्॥५८॥

“The immensely tall tree, heavy with fruit and blossoms, crashed swiftly to the ground with a tremendous sound before the bands of children playing near Rāma.

Passage 59

तस्य निष्पततः शब्दं समाकर्ण्य जना व्रजे। आययुस्त्वरितं तत्र यत्र बद्धोऽनया शिशुः॥५९॥

“Hearing the sound of its fall, the people of Vraja hurried to the place where she had tied the child.

Passage 60

तन्मात्रापि तदागत्य दृष्टो बालः स्वभाग्यतः। दाम्नोन्मोचितो वृक्षाद् दाम्ना बद्धः सुनिश्चलः॥६०॥

“His mother also arrived and, by good fortune, found the child safe and still, bound by the rope. She released the rope from the fallen tree.

Passage 61

पृष्टाश्च पर्यन्तचराः शिशवो गोदुहां स्त्रिया। कथमेष महावृक्षः स्वयमेवान्वभज्यत॥६१॥

“The cowherd woman questioned the children who had been playing nearby: ‘How did this enormous tree break apart by itself?’

Passage 62

ततस्ते बालका ऊचुर्यावद्रामः स्वयं मुहुः। गुणमाक्षिपते तावदभज्यत महातरुः॥६२॥

“The children replied, ‘As Rāma himself kept pulling upon the rope, the great tree broke and fell.’

तरावुन्मूलिते रामबलेनैव व्रजस्त्रियः। तत उद्गम्य पुरुषो महान् एको व्यदृश्यत॥६३॥

“Women of Vraja, when the tree had been uprooted by Rāma's power, a single majestic man was seen emerging from it.

द्योतमानो दिशः कान्तिसंदोहेनातिभूयसा। प्रांशुश्चेन्दुसंकाशो रूपसारविभूषितः॥६४॥

“He illuminated the directions with a tremendous mass of splendor. Tall and moonlike, he was adorned with the very essence of beauty.

रत्नहारयुतोरस्को दिव्यदेहविराजितः। दिव्यवस्त्रधरो मनोज्ञः पद्मलोचनः॥६५॥

“A jeweled necklace lay across his chest; his celestial body shone. Clad in divine garments, he was enchanting and lotus-eyed.

Passage 66

मुहुः संस्तुत्य रामं स प्रणम्य च मुहुर्मुहुः। दिव्यं विमानमारुह्य पश्यतां नः खमारुहत्॥६६॥

“He repeatedly praised Rāma and bowed again and again. Then, while we watched, he mounted a celestial aerial car and ascended into the sky.

Passage 67

गोपबालवचः श्रुत्वा नरा नार्यश्च विस्मिताः। चिरञ्जीवतु रामोऽयमिति सर्वे बभाषिरे॥६७॥

“Men and women were astonished to hear the cowherd boys' account, and everyone said, ‘May this Rāma live long!’

Passage 68

गोपालिका रामचन्द्रं स्वाङ्क आरोप्य विह्वला। स्नेहेन लालयामास महता प्राणजीवनम्॥६८॥

“Overwhelmed, the cowherd mother lifted Rāmacandra, the very life of her life, onto her lap and fondled him with immense affection.

अहो मद्भाग्यनिवहैरयमुर्वरितस्तरोः। देवतानां प्रसादेन स्वाशीर्भिश्च द्विजन्मनाम्॥६९॥

“‘Ah, through the abundance of my good fortune, the grace of the deities, and the blessings of the twice-born, he has been saved from the falling tree!’

कृतस्वस्त्ययनं बालं कृतदानं द्विजन्मने। चिरादङ्कं समारोप्य परिरेभे सुविस्मिता॥७०॥

“She had rites of well-being performed for the child and gave gifts to the twice-born. At last she set him on her lap and, still filled with wonder, embraced him.

कुलदेवीं ततोऽभ्यर्च्य संपूज्य च सुखं सुरान्। देवताश्च पितॄंश्चैव पूजयित्वा विधानतः॥७१॥

“She then worshiped the family goddess, joyfully honored the gods, and duly made offerings to the deities and ancestors.

Passage 72

विप्रानाहूय सकलान् समुपामन्त्रितान् पुरा। सुखेन पूजयामास संतुष्टा मत्कुटुम्बिनी॥७२॥

“My contented wife called all the Brāhmaṇas who had previously been invited and honored them with joy.

Passage 73

ततो ज्ञातीन् समाहूय नरान् नारीश्च कोटिशः। अवशिष्टं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो भोजयामास भूतये॥७३॥

“Then she summoned our relatives, men and women in countless numbers, and for their welfare fed them what remained after the Brāhmaṇas had eaten.

Passage 74

अक्षय्यं तदभूत् सद्म पक्वान्नपरिपूरितम्। भुक्तं भुक्तमभूद् भूयो रामस्यैव प्रसादतः॥७४॥

“The house, filled with cooked food, became inexhaustible: however much was eaten appeared again through Rāma's grace alone.

चन्दनादिभिरालिप्य ब्राह्मणान् दत्तदक्षिणान्। विससर्जाशिषामन्ते संतुष्टा मत्कुटुम्बिनी॥७५॥

“My satisfied wife anointed the Brāhmaṇas with sandalwood and other fragrant substances, gave them honoraria, received their blessings, and then bade them farewell.

Passage 76

एवमेतत्स्थलं राजन् कोटितीर्थौघपावनम्। रामचन्द्रपदाम्भोजैरङ्कितं दृश्यतां मुहुः॥७६॥

“Thus, king, this place—marked by Rāmacandra's lotus feet—purifies like the flood of ten million sacred fords. Behold it again and again.

Passage 77

द्रुमभङ्गस्थले स्नात्वा भवत्या दशरथो नृपः। अन्यतो दिशमानीय बभाषे सुखितेन सः॥७७॥

“King Daśaratha bathed at the place where the tree had broken. Sukhita then led him in another direction and addressed him. Colophon इति श्रीमदादिरामायणे ब्रह्मभुशुण्डसंवादे दशरथतीर्थयात्रायां द्वादशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः॥ ११२ ॥ “Thus ends Chapter 112 within Daśaratha's pilgrimage in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the venerable Ādi Rāmāyaṇa.” Source control note Chapter 112 occupies registered source leaves 754–760 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 755–761) and contains 77 numbered passages.
