Passage 1
ततश्च सा तुङ्गपयश्छटाभिः प्रौढन्महामेघघटोरुभाभिः। विश्वत्रिविकुण्ठतनयस्य लोकमाप्लाव्य भूयो विरजामियाय॥१॥
“Then Yamunā, her lofty sprays shining like immense masses of swelling rain clouds, flooded the realm of the Lord’s transcendent Vaikuṇṭha and moved on toward Virajā.
Passage 2
प्रधानपरमव्योम्नोरन्तराले प्रतिष्ठिताम्। ब्रह्मानन्दमहानीरां मुक्तसन्दोहसेविताम्॥२॥
“Virajā stands between primordial nature and the supreme sky. Her vast waters are the bliss of Brahman, and hosts of liberated souls serve her.
Passage 3
मन्दारमाल्यस्तवकैः समन्तादाच्छादितात्यच्छमहाप्रवाहाम्। रमाकुचाभोगयुताङ्गरागसच्छालनाज्जातविचित्रवर्णाम्॥३॥
“Her perfectly clear, mighty current was covered on every side with clusters of mandāra garlands and colored wondrously by the washing of fragrant pigment from Lakṣmī’s breast.
Passage 4
सुवर्णरत्नोपलबद्धकूलां मुनीन्द्रवर्गैः समुपास्यमानाम्। सुधारसास्वादभृशं प्रमत्तमानन्दकूजद्बहुराजहंसाम्॥४॥
“Her banks were formed of gold, jewels, and precious stones and worshipped by companies of great sages. Many royal swans, intoxicated by nectar’s taste, called there in bliss.
Passage 5
उत्फुल्लपङ्केरुहराजिराजत्परागरागाञ्चितनीरपूराम्। तटस्थकल्पद्रुमफुल्लपुष्पमरन्दवृन्दैः सुरभिं समन्तात्॥५॥
“Her waters were tinted by pollen shining from rows of fully opened lotuses, and fragrant everywhere with nectar from the blossoming wish-fulfilling trees upon her banks.
Passage 6
श्रीकृष्णवंशीनिनदानुघोषप्रेमस्रवत्कामगवीस्तनोत्थैः। दुग्धौघकुल्यानिवहैः समन्तात्सहस्रधा सञ्जनितैर्मिलन्तीम्॥६॥
“The echo of Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s flute made the wish-fulfilling cows’ udders stream with love; thousands of channels of milk arose and joined her on every side.
Passage 7
क्वचिद्धियोगस्मरतापतप्तब्रजाङ्गनारन्ध्रसुखावगाहाम्। चञ्चच्चिदानन्दमयप्रवाहसकेलिकोकीगणनिक्वणाढ्याम्॥७॥
“Here the women of Vraja, burning in the fever of love-in-separation, immersed themselves happily in her hidden waters; there her moving current of conscious bliss resounded with playful waterbirds.
Passage 8
क्वचिद्रहः श्रीवृषभानुकन्यासमेतनन्दात्मजदत्तमोदैः। तरङ्गजालैरुपनीतभयप्रफुल्लाम्बुजातार्हणसंविधानाम्॥८॥
“In a secluded place Nanda’s son, joined by Vṛṣabhānu’s daughter, gave her joy. Her networks of waves brought forth offerings of fully opened lotuses.
Passage 9
क्वचिद्धने कुञ्जवनेऽन्तरालप्रसर्पिणीं शीतलसुप्रवाहाम्। क्वचिन्महारत्नदरीगृहार्तावभेदनोत्तुङ्गतरङ्गजालाम्॥९॥
“At places her cool, lovely current crept through the interiors of dense bowers; elsewhere towering networks of waves broke against great jeweled cave-houses.
Passage 10
विराजमानां महसां समूहैस्तडित्प्रकाशैस्त्रिजगोपदारैः। अलौकिकैरर्थगणैः समेतां विमुक्त्यवस्थापरिदृश्यरूपाम्॥१०॥
“She shone amid masses of radiance and lightning-like splendor that illumined the three worlds, filled with transcendent treasures and visible only in the state of liberation.
Passage 11
ब्रह्माण्डकोशाश्रयसन्ततौघां मायावश्यैर्जीवसङ्घैरदृश्याम्। पारे परब्रह्मगृहप्रतिष्ठामवारगारेषु जगत्प्रतिष्ठाम्॥११॥
“Her perpetual flood enclosed the cosmic egg and remained unseen by beings subject to māyā. Beyond her stood the dwelling of the Supreme Brahman, while the worlds rested within her encompassing waters.
Passage 12
तया मिलित्वा ननु दिव्यरूपया जलान्तरोद्भासितशुद्धदेहया। स्वयं च दिव्यं वपुरास्थिता हरेः प्रिया प्रमोदं हृदये पुपोष सा॥१२॥
“Meeting Virajā, whose pure divine body shone within the waters, Hari’s beloved herself assumed a celestial form and nourished joy in her heart.
Passage 13
प्रत्यग्रहीत्सा यमुनां समेतां सपर्यया साधु विधीयमानाम्। सिद्धेन्द्रसेव्या विरजा समन्ताद्भक्तेन्द्रसेव्यामभजत्स्वयं ताम्॥१३॥
“Virajā, served by the foremost perfected beings, received the arriving Yamunā with proper worship and herself honored the one served by the greatest devotees.
Passage 14
तरङ्गबाहून् विरजा वितत्य तयामिलन्नन्दसुतस्य पत्न्या। तेनैव सा सेव्यतमा बभूव तद्ब्रह्मधामस्थितमुक्तिराशेः॥१४॥
“Extending the arms of her waves, Virajā embraced the wife of Nanda’s son. By that contact she became supremely worthy of service by the hosts of liberated souls dwelling in Brahman’s realm.
Passage 15
यमुनास्पर्शमात्रेण विरजा विगतज्वरा। ब्रह्मानन्दमतिक्रम्य प्रेमानन्दमगाहत॥१५॥
“By Yamunā’s mere touch, Virajā was freed from every fever. Passing beyond the bliss of Brahman, she plunged into the bliss of divine love.
Passage 16
पाद्यार्घ्याचमनानि चैव मधुपर्कस्थानदानादिभि- स्तामेषा समुपास्य गन्धकुसुमस्रग्धूपदीपादिभिः। नैवेद्यैरमृतात्मकैरपचितिं कृत्वा च नत्वा पुन- स्तस्याः पादसरोरुहद्वयमुरुप्रेमप्रकर्षादग्रहीत्॥१६॥
“Virajā worshipped her with water for the feet, an offering of honor, water for sipping, madhuparka, a seat, gifts, fragrances, flowers, garlands, incense, lamps, and nectar-like food. Bowing again, she clasped Yamunā’s two lotus feet in the intensity of her great love.
Passage 17
लुठन्ती तच्चरणयोर्विरजा प्रेमसम्प्लुता। तुष्टाव तामभिप्रेत्य महिषीं श्रीमतो हरेः॥१७॥
“Rolling at her feet and flooded with love, Virajā addressed and praised her as the queen of glorious Hari. Virajā said:
Passage 18
अयि प्रियासि प्रणयैकमूर्तेर्व्रजाधिनाथस्य सुखैकहेतुः। कल्याणिनी कोटिकलाविलासा कलिन्दकन्या भवती भवित्री॥१८॥
“Dear goddess, you are the beloved and sole source of joy for the Lord of Vraja, the embodiment of love. Auspicious and radiant with millions of arts, you will become the daughter of Kalinda.
Passage 19
भवान्तरे सूर्यसुताभविष्णुस्त्वं मोदयिष्यस्यसकृद्गृहेशम्। त्रिंशच्च कोटीस्त्र्यधिका सुराणां त्वं योजयिष्यस्यमितैः शुभौघैः॥१९॥
“In another birth you will become the Sun’s daughter and repeatedly delight the Lord of your house. With limitless floods of blessings you will unite more than thirty-three crores of gods.
Passage 20
मन्ये कलिन्दाद्रिशिखावलस्य पिच्छावली त्वं यमुने भवित्री। त्वयीशि यन्नेत्रपथं गतायां पलायिताः कल्मषकालसर्पाः॥२०॥
“Yamunā, I think you will become a plume adorning the crest of Mount Kalinda. When you enter one’s field of sight, O goddess, the black serpents of sin flee.
Passage 21
जानाम्यहं व्योमसरोजमुच्चैश्चण्डत्विषो मण्डलपुण्डरीकम्। विहाय सम्मत्तमिलिन्दपङ्क्तिः कालिन्दनीलोत्पलमेष्यसि त्वम्॥२१॥
“I know you as a row of intoxicated bees who will leave the celestial lotus—the lotus-disc of the blazing Sun—and approach Kālindī’s blue lotus.
Passage 22
गुञ्जास्त्रजः केकिकलाकलापाः पीताम्बराण्येव च वैनतेयाः। मातः कियन्तस्त्वयि सन्ति यान् वै मज्जन्त एते मनुजा अगृह्णन्॥२२॥
“Mother, guñjā garlands, peacock plumes, yellow garments, and emblems of Garuḍa abide within you; people who immerse in you obtain them all.
Passage 23
काचस्फुरद्दर्पणपट्टिका त्वं सुनिर्मलाङ्गी यमुने विभासि। पुरःस्थितायां ननु युवत्यां पश्यन्ति नीरूपमपि स्वरूपम्॥२३॥
“Spotless-limbed Yamunā, you shine like a band of flashing crystal mirrors. When this young woman stands before them, even the formless behold their own form in your water.
Passage 24
प्रेमप्रकर्षात्परिरभ्य कृष्णं बभूव कृष्णा भवती स्वरूपात्। त्वदम्बुसंस्पर्शनमात्रतोऽपि कृष्णस्वरूपा मनुजा भवन्ति॥२४॥
“Embracing Kṛṣṇa in the intensity of love, you became dark through his very form. By merely touching your water, human beings attain a form like Kṛṣṇa’s.
Passage 25
पद्मासना पद्मसमानदेहा पद्मात्मिका पद्मधरा त्वमम्ब। यत्पश्यतामाचमतां जनानां निमज्जतां च श्रियमातनोषि॥२५॥
“Mother, you are lotus-seated, lotus-bodied, lotus-natured, and lotus-bearing. You extend prosperity to all who see you, sip you, or immerse in you.
Passage 26
लोकोत्तरं यत्कुशलं सुभव्ये त्वय्येव सर्वोपरि मुक्तिधाम्नि। तत्त्वत्तरङ्गप्रकरप्रसङ्गाल्लोकोऽपि सम्प्राप्स्यति कृष्णकान्ते॥२६॥
“Whatever transcendent good exists abides in you, supremely blessed abode of liberation. By contact with the multitudes of your truth-filled waves, the world too will attain it, beloved of Kṛṣṇa.
Passage 27
त्वं विष्णुदेहादमिते विभासि गङ्गा तु सा विष्णुपदोद्गतेव। अतोऽम्ब तस्यास्तव चापि तौल्ये गिरः कवीनां विरला भवन्ति॥२७॥
“Boundless goddess, you shine forth from Viṣṇu’s body, whereas Gaṅgā arose from Viṣṇu’s foot. Therefore, Mother, poets rarely speak of equality between you.
Passage 28
ब्रजाङ्गनाभिर्विहरिष्यतीशस्तवैव तीरे भगवान् मुकुन्दः। अतः प्रशस्तेऽपि भवे समस्ते करोतु कस्ते समतामुदारः॥२८॥
“Lord Mukunda will sport with the women of Vraja upon your very bank. Thus, generous goddess, who in all the celebrated world could make anything your equal?
Passage 29
न तीर्थशक्त्या न च पुण्यप्रकर्षान्न पापहृत्यामुरुसामर्थ्यभावात्। तव प्रशस्तिर्यमुने विदृश्यते यथा कृष्णाभिन्नरूपप्रभावात्॥२९॥
“Yamunā, your glory is not merely the power of a sacred ford, an abundance of merit, or great capacity to remove sin. It is seen because your powerful form is non-different from Kṛṣṇa.
Passage 30
यज्ज्योतिराद्यं कवयो गृणन्ति ब्रह्मेति सच्चित्सुखरूपमद्धा। तदम्ब ते धाम सनातनाख्यं कृष्णप्रिये योगिनां ध्यानधिष्ण्यम्॥३०॥
“Mother, the primordial light that sages call Brahman, truly formed of being, consciousness, and bliss, is your eternal abode, beloved of Kṛṣṇa and seat of yogins’ meditation.
Passage 31
ततः परं त्वत्स्वरूपं तदम्ब प्रेमानन्दाकारतामाददानम्। विचित्रलीलारसकेलिपात्रं भक्तप्रमोदप्रसरैकहेतुः॥३१॥
“Beyond even that is your own form, Mother, taking the shape of love’s bliss: the vessel of wondrous play and rasa and the sole cause of devotees’ expanding delight.
Passage 32
तस्यै नमस्ते हरिवल्लभायै ब्रजाङ्गनाकौतुककारिकायै। श्रीनन्दसूनुस्फुटनीलरत्नप्रभाभिरामप्रचुराम्बरायै॥३२॥
“Homage to that beloved of Hari, maker of wonders for the women of Vraja, whose vast waters are beautiful with the vivid blue-jewel radiance of Nanda’s son.
Passage 33
विज्ञप्तिरेका यमुने मदीया निधीयतां कर्णपुटे भवत्या। मदन्तरे नित्यमिहाविरोधिप्रसादपात्रं कुरु मामजस्रम्॥३३॥
“Yamunā, place one petition of mine within your ear: keep me forever within you as an unobstructed recipient of your grace.
Passage 34
इत्युक्तवत्यां विरजायां प्रकामं तथेत्येतद्वाक्यमुरीचकार। अथ प्रसादं प्रविधाय तस्यां मृदुस्मितैर्भूरि मुदं पुपोष॥३४॥
“When Virajā had spoken, Yamunā gladly answered, ‘So be it.’ Bestowing grace upon her with gentle smiles, she nourished immense joy.
Passage 35
अथोदगाद्विरजायाः प्रवाहं निर्भिद्य कल्पान्तमरुत्सुवेगा। घनौघसङ्घट्टघोराजटालैस्तरङ्गजालैर्जगतीं पुनन्ती॥३५॥
“Then she surged onward, piercing Virajā’s current with the fierce speed of the wind at the end of an age, purifying the world with networks of waves massive as colliding storm clouds.
Passage 36
दुरापपारे विरजाप्रवाहे महेषुवद्धावमाना जवेन। अलक्षिता तत्पुलिनस्थदेवैरेवं करिष्णुर्जनपापभेदम्॥३६॥
“Like a great arrow she sped across Virajā’s inaccessible, shoreless current. The gods upon its bank could not follow her as she set out to break apart people’s sins.
Passage 37
यथा जवोऽस्या विरजाप्रवाहविभेदनेऽभूत्प्रलयानिलाधिकः। तथैव सर्वाशुभपापपुञ्जमहाद्रिभेदे विधौ न चित्रम्॥३७॥
“Since her speed in piercing Virajā’s current exceeded the wind of dissolution, it is no wonder that she could split the great mountains formed of every inauspicious mass of sin.
Passage 38
निर्भिद्य सप्तावरणानि साथ ब्रह्माण्डभाण्डं सहसा विभिद्य। अन्तर्बहिः संस्थितमस्ततस्तत्प्रभिद्य शुद्धां भुवमाजगाम॥३८॥
“She broke through the seven coverings and suddenly split the vessel of the cosmic egg. Piercing everything situated within and without it, she entered the pure worlds.
Passage 39
निर्भिद्य साथ वेगेन लोकालोकगिरेर्गुहाम्। मानसोत्तरशैलेन्द्रं निर्भिद्य समुपागता॥३९॥
“With force she pierced the cavern of Mount Lokāloka, then broke through great Mount Mānasottara and advanced.
Passage 40
निर्भिद्य शुद्धोदसमुद्रमित्थं ततश्च दुग्धोदधिमात्तवेगा। निर्भिद्य सप्तार्णवनीरपूरानित्थं क्रमात्प्राप भुवोऽन्तरालम्॥४०॥
“Thus she pierced the ocean of pure water and then, gathering speed, the ocean of milk. Breaking through the waters of all seven oceans in order, she reached the region of earth.
Passage 41
श्वेतद्वीपपतेः स्थानमनिरुद्धस्य सागमत्। व्यापिवैकुण्ठलोकस्य यद्द्वारं परिकीर्तितम्॥४१॥
“She came to the station of Aniruddha, lord of Śvetadvīpa, celebrated as the gateway to the all-pervading Vaikuṇṭha realm.
Passage 42
अत्र सिद्धर्षिदेवौघैः स्तुता सम्पूजिता च सा। प्रेमानन्दमयीमृद्धिमतनोत्तेषु सन्ततम्॥४२॥
“There hosts of perfected sages and gods praised and worshipped her. She continually increased within them the wealth formed of love’s bliss.
Passage 43
ऊर्ध्वं ब्रह्माण्डगोलं समधिकजविना स्रोतसा खण्डयित्वा तन्मार्गं प्राप्य धातुर्विधिभवनमथो तापसानां च लोकम्। प्राप्ता लोकं जनाख्यं तदनु च महर्लोकगा स्वर्गलोकं भूलोकं चैत्य पश्चाद्भुवमपि गतवत्यद्भुताम्भःप्रभावा॥४३॥
“Her wondrous waters split the upper cosmic sphere with surpassing speed. She followed that route to Brahmā’s abode, then to Tapoloka, Janaloka, Maharloka, Svarga, the earthly realm, and finally the intermediate world.
Passage 44
लोके नारायणीये किमपि कमलया सेव्यमानालोक्यमाना पश्चाद्वैरिञ्चलोके मुनिवरनिवहैः सेविता संस्तुता च। सन्दोहैस्तापसानां सविनयमभितो वन्दिता तत्पुरस्ता- ल्लोकस्थैः पूज्यमाना सुरतरुकुसुमामोदगर्भाम्बुनेत्री॥४४॥
“In Nārāyaṇa’s realm Lakṣmī herself gazed upon and served her; in Brahmā’s realm companies of great sages served and praised her. Hosts of ascetics bowed respectfully before her, and the inhabitants worshipped her waters, fragrant with celestial-tree flowers.
Passage 45
सप्तर्षिस्तोमवन्द्या ध्रुवभवनमिता तुङ्गरिङ्गत्तरङ्गे- र्नक्षत्राणां विमानावलिमुदकभरैः सर्वतः प्लावयन्ती। स्वर्गङ्गाजातसङ्गा त्रिदिवपतिगजोत्तापसन्दोहहन्त्री सूर्यादींश्च ग्रहांस्तान्निजविमलगुणैर्भूरिशो मोदयन्ती॥४५॥
“Worshipped by the Seven Seers, she reached Dhruva’s realm. Her high dancing waves flooded the hosts of stellar chariots. Joining heaven’s Gaṅgā, she cooled the lord of heaven’s elephant and repeatedly delighted the Sun and other planets with her stainless qualities.
Passage 46
मुख्ये शृङ्गे सुमेरोः सजवनिपतिता नन्दने सञ्चरन्ती मन्दारोत्फुल्लपुष्पस्तबकसुरभितं वारिपूरं वहन्ती। देवगन्धर्वसिद्धादिभिरधिकतरं स्तूयमाना समन्तात् प्राप्येलावृत्तवर्षं कनकमयमहाकूलशोभाभराढ्या॥४६॥
“She fell swiftly upon Sumeru’s principal summit and moved through Nandana, carrying water fragrant with clusters of open mandāra blossoms. Extensively praised on every side by gods, gandharvas, siddhas, and others, she reached Ilāvṛta with magnificent golden banks.
Passage 47
इलावृत्तवर्षे कनकगिरिसच्छायतलगा महारत्नप्रस्थप्रचुररुचिसन्दोहवलिता। विचित्राकाराम्बुप्रवहणकरी कौतुकभरैः परीतां गच्छन्ती दुरितशमनी भाति यमुना॥४७॥
“In Ilāvṛta, Yamunā moved beneath the lovely shade of golden mountains, encircled by abundant brilliance from great jeweled plateaus. Carrying waters in wondrous forms and surrounded by marvels, the destroyer of sin shone.
Passage 48
प्रोद्यत्कल्लोललोलप्रवहलहरीलास्यलावण्यलक्ष्मी- र्लोलालालित्यशीला शिथिलितसुदृढोद्दामशैलेन्द्रमूला। काप्युच्चैः सम्पतन्ती जवदलितदृषद्दारुणारावकर्त्री भिन्दाना देवदारुद्रुमवनमभितस्तीक्ष्णधाराजवेन॥४८॥
“Her beauty danced in restless streams and rising, rolling waves. With playful grace she loosened the roots of mighty mountains, fell thunderously, shattered rocks with a terrible roar, and split forests of deodar trees with her sharp, swift current.
Passage 49
इत्थं कौतूहलानि प्रतिपदमुदयद्वेगवद्भिः प्रवाहै- स्तन्वाना यक्षरक्षस्त्रिदशमुनिदृगानन्दसन्दोहकन्दा। दिव्यारण्यद्रुमोद्यन्मृदुमधुरमिलन्मारुतैर्वीज्यमाना प्रोत्सर्पन्ती सदर्पं सुदृढगिरिदरीदारणोद्भूतदर्पा॥४९॥
“Thus her ever-swifter currents produced wonders at every step and became the root of abundant delight for yakṣas, rākṣasas, gods, and sages. Fanned by soft, sweet breezes arising among divine forest trees, she advanced proudly, her confidence born of splitting strong mountain caves.
Passage 50
विभिन्नभास्वद्विरजाप्रवाहा ब्रह्माण्डसप्तावृतिभेदकर्त्री। विदीर्णसप्तार्णववारिपूरा पारङ्गमा सङ्गतसर्वतीर्था॥५०॥
“She had split radiant Virajā’s current, broken the cosmic egg’s seven coverings, and torn through the waters of the seven oceans. Expert in every crossing, she carried all sacred fords within her.
Passage 51
कुलाचलग्रावविभेदनोघ्रा सहस्रशो मार्गगता त्रिनेत्र। महाजवोन्मूलितवृक्षमूला क्रमेण सा प्राप कलिन्दशैलम्॥५१॥
“Terrible in splitting the rocks of the boundary mountains, she traveled a thousand paths, O three-eyed Lord. Her great speed uprooted trees, and in due course she reached Mount Kalinda.
Passage 52
स्फुरन्महारत्नमहाप्रकाशैर्निरस्तताराग्रहकान्तिदर्पैः। दिवं रुरोधेव शिखैः समन्तात्प्रसह्य रुन्धानमिवेन्दुमार्गम्॥५२॥
“The great light of its flashing jewels humbled the brilliance of stars and planets. Its peaks seemed to block the sky on every side and forcibly obstruct the Moon’s path.
Passage 53
महामहावज्रशिलाकठोरैः समन्ततो दीर्घदृषत्समूहैः। विसन्धिसर्वावयवं हरस्य त्रिशूलकोट्यापि न भेत्तुमर्हम्॥५३॥
“It was formed on every side of long masses of rock, hard as the mightiest thunderbolt, a seamless body that even the point of Śiva’s trident could not split.
Passage 54
अनेकसिद्धौषधिदीप्यमानदरीगृहक्रीडितकारिणीभिः। देवद्रुमोत्थानिलवीजिताभिः सुराङ्गनाभिः सुनिषेव्यमाणम्॥५४॥
“Celestial women played in its cave-houses, which shone with many perfected herbs, while breezes rising from divine trees fanned them; they lovingly served the mountain.
Passage 55
महामहारत्नरुचां समन्तात्सुरद्रुमारण्यमनोज्ञमध्यम्। नक्षत्रमालापरिशोभिनीभिरुपत्यकाभिः परितः स्फुरन्तम्॥५५॥
“Surrounded by the brilliance of immense jewels, it held lovely forests of celestial trees at its center and flashed on every side with valleys adorned like garlands of stars.
Passage 56
सर्वाधिकोच्छ्रायशिरःसहस्रमहामहावज्रशिलौघसारम्। रवीन्दुजेत्रद्युतिदीपिताशं गन्धर्वलोकामितगानरम्यम्॥५६॥
“Its thousand summits rose higher than all others, built of masses of stone harder than mighty thunderbolts. Their luster conquered Sun and Moon and lit the directions; limitless gandharva song made it lovely.
Passage 57
नितम्बसंलग्नमहाघनालीसौदामिनीदीधितिदीपिताङ्गम्। नृत्यन्मयूराञ्चितचारुकेकासम्भिन्नपुष्टकोकिलकाकलीकम्॥५७॥
“Great clouds clung around its slopes, and lightning illumined its body. The lovely calls of dancing peacocks mingled with the rich songs of cuckoos.
Passage 58
सर्वर्तुसंसेवितकाननौघक्रीडत्सुरस्त्रीनयनाभिरामम्। सहस्रशो निर्झरधोरणीभिः प्रक्षालितात्यच्छशिलाकलापम्॥५८॥
“Its forests enjoyed every season and delighted the eyes of celestial women at play. Thousands of streaming waterfalls washed its clusters of perfectly clear rock.

महामहारत्नगणप्रकाशं दिवानिशोत्फुल्लसुवर्णपद्मैः। स्फुरत्सुधानिर्मलतोयपूर्णैः समन्ततो देवसरोभिराढ्यम्॥५९॥
“Great hosts of jewels illuminated it, and on every side it abounded in divine lakes filled with shining, nectar-pure water and golden lotuses open day and night.

अलौकिकानेकपदार्थसार्थैः सदैव विष्वक्परिपूर्यमाणम्। मुनीन्द्रसिद्धाश्रमसङ्घजुष्टसुपुण्यदेशाञ्चितमध्यभागम्॥६०॥
“It was always filled in every direction with hosts of transcendent treasures. Its central region was adorned with most sacred places inhabited by communities of great sages, siddhas, and hermitages.

सहेन्द्रमुख्यामरहूयमानशुभाग्निजात्यर्थसुपुण्यधूमम्। गन्धर्वनारीकुचकुङ्कुमाक्तप्रायःप्रवाहामलदेवघाटम्॥६१॥
“Most sacred smoke rose from auspicious fires at which Indra and the other foremost gods made offerings. Its spotless divine bathing stairs met currents often tinged by the breast-kuṅkuma of gandharva women.
Passage 62
इतस्ततः सञ्चरतां सुरस्त्रीकदम्बकानां चरणाम्बुजेषु। मञ्जीरघोषैश्चकितायमानमरालबालाक्वणितातिरम्यम्॥६२॥
“As companies of celestial women wandered here and there, the sound of their anklets startled the young swans; the swans’ answering cries made the place exceedingly delightful.
Passage 63
क्वचित्पिशङ्गैः कलहेमशृङ्गैर्माणिक्यभाभिः क्वचिदात्तरङ्गम्। श्यामायमानं क्वचिदभ्रसङ्घैः क्वचिद्द्रुमौघैर्हरितायमानम्॥६३॥
“In one place its refined-gold peaks made it tawny; elsewhere ruby radiance gave it a red hue. Here masses of clouds darkened it, and there hosts of trees made it green.
Passage 64
क्वचिन्महानिर्झरवातगौरमित्थं समुद्धान्तमनेकवर्णैः। त्रैलोक्यमाङ्गल्यनिधौ विधात्रा विनिर्मितं मण्डलमुख्यमुर्व्याम्॥६४॥
“Elsewhere the spray of great waterfalls made it white. Thus it shone in many colors—the foremost region fashioned upon earth by the Creator as a treasury of auspiciousness for the three worlds.

अथ तत्रागता वेगाद्यमुना दीर्घवाहिनी। शैलं भेत्तुं मनश्चक्रे चण्डमारुतवेगिनी॥६५॥
“Then long-flowing Yamunā arrived there at speed. Racing like a violent wind, she resolved to split the mountain.
Passage 66
यथा संवर्तसमये मारुतश्चण्डवेगवान्। तथा बभूव यमुना जविनी शैलभेदने॥६६॥
“As the wind becomes fiercely swift at the time of cosmic dissolution, so Yamunā became impetuous in her attempt to break through the mountain.

जवात्सुसङ्गता तेन शैलेन यमुना सरित्। महावज्रौघसाराभिर्दृषद्भिः सा पराहता॥६७॥
“The river Yamunā struck that mountain at full speed, but its rocks, hard as a mass of great thunderbolts, beat her back.

योजनायतवेगा सा गिरिपृष्ठविदारणे। वियोजनपरावृत्ता बभूव निहतोद्यमा॥६८॥
“Her onset extended for a yojana as she tried to tear open the mountain’s surface, yet she was forced far backward and her effort was defeated.

हतवेगा तु सा पश्चात्परावृत्तपयोघटा। पुनर्वेगं समाबध्य स्रोतसा सुसमाययौ॥६९॥
“Her momentum broken, her mass of water first recoiled. Then she gathered speed again and came on powerfully with her current.
Passage 70
कृत्वा महाजवं स्रोतो धृतवीर्या महोत्कटा। बाणवत्प्रेरयामास जलौघं वेगवत्तरम्॥७०॥
“Holding firmly to her courage, the immensely forceful river made her current race and launched the swifter mass of water like an arrow.
Passage 71
गिरिमर्ममहावज्रशिलासङ्घातकर्कशम्। विभेत्तुमत्युदीर्णा सा महावेगप्रधाविनी॥७१॥
“Surging to an extreme and rushing with tremendous speed, she sought to split the mountain’s vital point, hardened by a mass of thunderbolt-like stone.
Passage 72
जवेनागत्य लग्ना सा गिरिभित्तिषु मर्मणि। समुच्छलिततोयौघा परावृत्ताभवत्पुनः॥७२॥
“She rushed in and struck the vital point of the mountain wall, but her mass of water leapt upward and once again she was turned back.
Passage 73
सलज्जां यमुनां देवीं हतवेगां हतोद्यमाम्। तादृशीं तां समालोक्य देवाश्चिन्तातुरान्तराः॥७३॥
“Seeing the goddess Yamunā thus abashed, her speed and endeavor thwarted, the gods became deeply distressed within.
Passage 74
बभूवुः सकलास्तत्र निराशा दीनचेतसः। अहो त्रैलोक्यभव्याय जाता मङ्गलरूपिणी॥७४॥
“All of them there grew despondent and hopeless. ‘Alas! She whose very form is auspicious has appeared for the welfare of the three worlds.
Passage 75
शुभकृत्सर्वलोकानां सर्वतीर्थसमाश्रया। पुण्यसारा पुण्यवहा महापुण्यविवर्धिनी॥७५॥
“‘She benefits every world and is the dwelling of all sacred fords. She is the essence of merit, bears merit onward, and greatly increases sanctity.

अभाग्येनैव जगतां गिरिः प्रत्यूहतामगात्। कृपया देवदेवस्य गिरिं भिन्द्यान्महाजवा॥७६॥
“‘Only through the worlds’ misfortune has this mountain become an obstacle. Through the Lord of gods’ grace, may the mighty river split it.
Passage 77
अनुग्रहोऽयं भूतेषु कर्तव्यो विष्णुना स्वयम्। स्वयमेष तदाविश्य स्रोतस्यस्याः कृपानिधिः॥७७॥
“‘Viṣṇu himself should bestow this favor upon all beings. Let that treasury of compassion personally enter her current.
Passage 78
भिनत्ति चेद्गिरिग्रावसमूहं वज्रकर्कशम्। तदा त्रैलोक्यपापौघप्रतीकारो भविष्यति॥७८॥
“‘If she breaks the mountain’s mass of stone, hard as a thunderbolt, a remedy for the flood of sins in all three worlds will come into being.’
Passage 79
इति चिन्तातुराः सर्वे तुष्टुवुः कैटभद्विषम्। समस्तदेवदेवेशं त्रैलोक्यकरुणाकरम्॥७९॥
“Distressed by these thoughts, they all praised the enemy of Kaiṭabha, Lord of all the gods and source of compassion for the three worlds.

नमो देवाय हरये विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे। दैत्यदानवरक्षौघकुलदावाग्निवर्मणे॥८०॥
“‘Homage to the divine Hari, to all-powerful Viṣṇu, the encircling forest fire that consumes the clans and hosts of daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas.

चक्रतेजःप्रभासङ्घविदारितसुरारये। वायुतत्त्वमयोद्दाममहावेगगदाभृते॥८१॥
“‘Homage to him whose discus-radiance tears apart the gods’ enemies, who bears a mace of tremendous, unrestrained force embodying the principle of wind.

उद्दामशक्तये तुभ्यमक्षुण्णबलवर्मणे। जगत्त्राणप्रतीकाशप्राणाधाराय ते नमः॥८२॥
“‘Homage to you of unbounded power, armored in unbroken strength—the support of life who manifests to protect the world.

कल्पान्तसमयोद्भासमहावातसुवेगिने। प्राणान्तकाय दैत्यानां विष्णवे ते नमोनमः॥८३॥
“‘Again and again we bow to you, Viṣṇu, swift as the great wind that blazes forth at a kalpa’s end and brings the daityas’ lives to an end.

उद्दामरयनिर्भिन्नब्रह्माण्डशतकोटये। करालाय महोग्राय नमस्ते हरमूर्तये॥८४॥
“‘Homage to your destructive form, terrible and exceedingly fierce, whose unbridled speed has split hundreds of crores of universes.

वन्ध्या पुत्रमुपैति पौरुषकलाहीनोऽपि याति व्रजं स्त्रीणां मूकतमोऽपि वक्ति गुरुवदन्धोऽपि पश्येज्जनः। यस्येच्छानुवशात्कृपारससमासिक्ते जने जायते किं किं नैव सुदुर्घटं विजयसे स त्वं महोदारधीः॥८५॥
“‘By your will a barren woman obtains a son, even one devoid of manly power goes among women, the most mute person speaks like a teacher, and a blind man sees. When a person is drenched in the nectar of your grace, what great difficulty does not become possible? You, supremely generous in wisdom, triumph.

त्वं सर्गो जगतामसि स्थितिकरस्त्वं तत्त्ववृन्दस्य सत्- तत्त्वं तद्घटनामयो विजयसे विश्वस्य भावोऽपि च। त्वं सर्वेष्ववशिष्यसेऽवसरतो नश्यत्सु वस्तुष्वलं तत्तन्नामगुणस्य रूपनिलयो न त्वां विना किञ्चन॥८६॥
“‘You are the worlds’ creation and the maker of their continuance. You are the true reality of every principle, their ordered composition, and the very being of the universe. When all things finally perish, you alone remain. Every name, quality, form, and abode rests in you; nothing exists apart from you.
Passage 87
नित्यं वेदवचांसि गोचरतया किञ्चित्समाचक्षते नित्यं प्राप्तुमतन्निरासमुखतो वाञ्छन्ति शश्वत्प्रभो। आरोपार्थमुदीरयन्ति च गुणान्नैर्गुण्यलक्ष्मीनिधे नोचेत्सच्चिदखण्डसौख्यजलधौ तेषां प्रवृत्तिः कथम्॥८७॥
“‘O eternal Lord, the Vedic words describe something by bringing it within speech’s range, yet seek to reach you by successively denying what you are not. O treasury whose glory is beyond qualities, they also state qualities as provisional attributions; otherwise, how could those words engage with the ocean of indivisible existence, consciousness, and bliss?
Passage 88
ब्रह्मण्येव गिरां वृत्तिरित्थंभूता विभाव्यते। कुतस्तरां परे ब्रह्मण्यासां वृत्तिर्हरे त्वयि॥८८॥
“‘Even regarding Brahman, the operation of words is understood to be only of this kind. How much less can their activity reach you, Hari, the Supreme Brahman?
Passage 89
नमोऽस्तु ते देव सदैव कुर्महे किमन्यदानन्दनिधे विधीयताम्। एतावतालं भवतोऽनुतोषणं मुकुन्दभक्त्येकजुषामिहात्मनाम्॥८९॥
“‘May our homage always be yours, O God. What more can we do, treasury of bliss? Command it. For souls here devoted solely to Mukunda’s bhakti, this much is sufficient for propitiating you.
Passage 90
सम्प्रत्यसौ नाथ तवानुकम्पया विश्वस्य माङ्गल्यविधिर्बभूव ह। यस्मादियं पुण्यपरम्परामयी पराविरासीद्यमुनाभिधा सरित्॥९०॥
“‘Now, Lord, through your compassion a means of blessing the world has indeed arisen, for this river named Yamunā, formed of an unbroken succession of merit, has manifested forth.
Passage 91
सुधामयी सौख्यमयी रमामयी महोमयी मङ्गलधोरणीमयी। दयामयी ऋद्धिरपूर्वगा हरे जयत्यसौ नीलरुचिस्तरङ्गिणी॥९१॥
“‘She is made of nectar, happiness, beauty, splendor, and streaming auspiciousness; she is compassion itself and an unprecedented current of prosperity. Hari, this blue-lustrous river triumphs.
Passage 92
अनया देवदेवेश कृतार्थमखिलं जगत्। विनैव साधनायासैर्विना चाध्यात्मसंविदा॥९२॥
“‘Lord of the gods, through her the entire world attains its purpose without the exertions of spiritual discipline and without realization of the inner Self.
Passage 93
अस्या दर्शनमात्रतो मधुरिपोरदृष्टं स्वरूपं तव ब्रह्मानन्दकलाधिकं कलयति प्रेमपयोदार्णवम्। एषा श्रीर्जगतामलौकिकतमा कल्याणसम्पत्परा पुण्यौघैः प्रवहत्यनेकदुरितध्वंसप्रगल्भोदया॥९३॥
“‘Merely seeing her reveals your otherwise unseen form, O enemy of Madhu, and brings one to the ocean of love, greater than even a measure of Brahman-bliss. She is the worlds’ most transcendent glory, supreme wealth of blessedness, flowing with floods of merit and arising with the power to destroy countless sins.
Passage 94
अस्याः सम्प्राप्तिमध्येऽसौ प्रत्यूहः समुपस्थितः। भवतोऽनुग्रहाद्विष्णो किन्तु दूरीभविष्यति॥९४॥
“‘This obstacle has appeared in the midst of her progress, but through your grace, Viṣṇu, it will surely be removed.
Passage 95
किं किं न दुर्घटं नाथ तवानुग्रहभावितम्। जायते भुवि मर्त्यानां तत्प्रसीद जनार्दन॥९५॥
“‘Lord, what seeming impossibility does not come to pass on earth for mortals when empowered by your grace? Therefore be gracious, Janārdana.
Passage 96
ब्रह्माण्डसप्तावरणभेदनेन विलम्बिता। नापीश विरजापूरतीक्ष्णतोयौघभेदने॥९६॥
“‘Lord, she was not delayed when piercing the universe’s seven coverings, nor when cutting through Virajā’s fierce mass of water.

न सप्तसिन्धुतोयौघनिर्दारणविधावपि। तथैवैषा कलिन्दाद्रेर्दारणे न विलम्बताम्॥९७॥
“‘Nor did she delay in the task of dividing the waters of the seven oceans. In just the same way, let her not be delayed in splitting Mount Kalinda.
Passage 98
कृपां कुरु जगन्नाथ विश्वमङ्गलविग्रह। विश्वपापहरात्युग्र प्राप्यतां नो मनोरथः॥९८॥
“‘Show compassion, Lord of the world, embodiment of universal blessing, supremely powerful remover of the world’s sins. May our heart’s desire be fulfilled.

विनिभिनत्तु भवता दत्तया जववत्तया। कलिन्दपर्वतग्रावशिलावज्रतटोत्करम्॥९९॥
“‘With the swiftness you grant her, may she break apart Mount Kalinda’s mass of banks formed from adamantine rock.

विनिर्यातु ततो देवी यमुना लोकमङ्गला। उच्चैरिलावृतखण्डस्य पावनाय पयोभरैः॥१००॥
“‘Then may the goddess Yamunā, blessing of the worlds, flow forth to purify the lofty region of Ilāvṛta with her abundant waters.

भवन्तु मनुजाः सर्वे धरणीतलवासिनः। दर्शनादेव निष्पापाः कृष्णसायुज्यलब्धये॥१०१॥
“‘May every human dwelling upon the earth become sinless merely by seeing her and thereby attain union with Kṛṣṇa.

क्रियतां च क्षणात्सर्वजम्बूद्वीपनिवासिनाम्। तीर्थानां मानसन्दोहः सर्वेषां पापशान्तये॥१०२॥
“‘For all the inhabitants of Jambūdvīpa, let the concentrated dignity of every sacred ford be established in her in an instant, so that every sin may be pacified.’

“As Brahmā, Indra, Giriśa, and the other gods praised him thus, the blessed Lord, husband of Kamalā, appeared there at once.

शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मविभूषितकराम्बुजः। कौस्तुभी कञ्जकिञ्जल्कपुञ्जमञ्जुतराम्बरः॥१०४॥
“His lotus hands were adorned with conch, discus, mace, and lotus. He bore the Kaustubha, and his garment was lovelier than a cluster of lotus filaments.

वनमालान्तरप्रोततुलसीदलसौरभैः। प्रविष्टैर्घ्राणमार्गेण क्षालयन् योगिनां मनः॥१०५॥
“The fragrance of tulasī leaves woven through his forest garland entered by the path of scent and washed the minds of yogins clean.

प्रावृषेण्यघनश्यामः शीर्षरत्नावतंसभृत्। मकराकारनिर्णिक्तकुण्डलद्वयमण्डितः॥१०६॥
“He was dark as a rain-season cloud, wore a jeweled crest upon his head, and was adorned with a gleaming pair of makara-shaped earrings.

उदारविलसत्तारमुक्ताहारविभूषितः। लम्बमानालकभ्राजन्मधुराननपङ्कजः॥१०७॥
“A magnificent necklace of lustrous, excellent pearls adorned him, while hanging curls illumined his sweet lotus face.

स्वर्णोपवीतवलितललितोदारकन्धरः। कङ्कणाङ्गदरत्नोप्तकटिसूत्रमनोहरः॥१०८॥
“A golden sacred thread encircled his graceful, noble shoulders. Bracelets, armlets, and a jeweled girdle made him captivating.

रामणीयकसम्पत्तिसन्दोहामृतसागरः। इत्युदारगुणोत्कर्षसुधावर्षपयोधरः॥१०९॥
“He was an ocean of nectar formed from the gathered wealth of beauty, a cloud that rained the nectar of this sublime perfection of noble qualities.
Passage 110
वैनतेयमयोदारमहारथमधिष्ठितः। दिव्यपार्षदवर्यौघसमुपासितविग्रहः॥११०॥
“He occupied a magnificent great chariot formed of Vainateya and was attended in person by hosts of the foremost divine companions.
Passage 111
सोऽवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं वैनतेयमयाद्धरिः। स्तुवतां देववृन्दानां मध्ये प्रादुरभूद्विभुः॥१११॥
“Hari quickly descended from that Vainateya-formed chariot, and the almighty Lord appeared amid the companies of gods who were praising him.
Passage 112
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय देवदेवं रमापतिम्। जयेत्यभिदधुर्देवा धृतोपायनपाणयः॥११२॥
“On seeing him—the God of gods and husband of Ramā—the deities rose at once. Holding gifts in their hands, they cried, ‘Victory!’

हरिः सम्भावयामास कृपादृष्ट्या सुरेश्वरान्। सुधाभिवर्षिणा चैव मन्दहासेन शोभिना॥११३॥
“Hari honored the lords of the gods with his compassionate gaze and with a radiant gentle smile that showered nectar.
Passage 114
तस्य प्रसादविशदैः कटाक्षैर्भाविताः सुराः। मेनिरे मनयो देवाः सिद्धमात्ममनोरथम्॥११४॥
“Pervaded by his gracious, clarifying glances, the gods considered their heart’s desire fulfilled. Source control note Chapter 108 occupies registered source leaves 693–703 of the Pūrva-khaṇḍa volume (physical PDF pages 694–704) and contains 114 numbered passages. Every passage was checked against the scan at reading resolution; the dense hymn in passages 80–102 and the iconographic description in passages 103–113 received additional enlarged-page review. Obvious OCR errors were corrected from the page images. Unusual transmitted forms—including sroto in passage 70 and manayo in passage 114—were retained rather than silently conjecturally emended; their English follows the evident sense of the surrounding syntax.
