Passage 1
भवतोऽन्यत्र मे काम्यं राम कामदविग्रह। नहि स्वरूपासक्तानामैहिकामुष्मिकी स्पृहा॥१॥
“Rāma, embodied fulfiller of desire, I want nothing apart from you. Those attached to your essential form have no longing for anything here or hereafter.
Passage 2
अथापि चेद्वरं देयं वरदेन त्वया विभो। निजाङ्घ्रिकमले भक्तिर्दीयतां भक्तवत्सल॥२॥
“Yet if you, the giver of boons, would grant me one, all-pervading Lord and lover of devotees, give me devotion to your own lotus feet.
Passage 3
सदा स्वरूपासक्तस्य स्वरूपासक्तिरेव च। निजसामीप्ययोगश्च पीठशय्यासनादिषु॥३॥
“Let me always remain attached to your form, united with your nearness as your pedestal, couch, seat, and the rest.
Passage 4
लीलोपकरणत्वं च उपधानत्वमेव च। छत्रत्वं चामरत्वं च भ्रातृसाहाय्यमेव च॥४॥
“Let me become an instrument of your līlā—your pillow, parasol, and fan—and also serve you with the assistance of a brother.
Passage 5
सुखचन्द्रामृतास्वादं सदासविधसंस्थितिः। एतन्मे दीयतां राम निर्माल्यस्य च भोजनम्॥५॥
“Rāma, grant me the taste of nectar from your moon of bliss, perpetual presence beside you, and the eating of the remnants of your offerings.” Śrī Rāma said:
Passage 6
यद्यदिष्टतमं शेष तत्तवास्तु मदाज्ञया। त्वमेव भक्तवर्यो मे भविष्यति युगे युगे॥६॥
“Śeṣa, by my command let everything dearest to you be yours. Age after age you shall be my most excellent devotee.
Passage 7
आचार्यश्चैव भक्तानां भक्तिशास्त्रप्रकाशकः। सदा सविधसंस्थानं भविष्यति परं समम्॥७॥
“You shall be the devotees’ teacher and the revealer of the scripture of devotion. Your supreme place shall always be close beside me.
Passage 8
त्वमेव मम वै भूयाः पीठशय्यासनादिकः। लीलासाधनसामग्री सर्वमेव त्वमक्षरम्॥८॥
“You yourself shall become my pedestal, couch, seat, and all the imperishable equipment that serves my līlā.
Passage 9
त्वमेव चोपधानं मे छत्रं चामरमेव च। भ्राता सहचरो बन्धुः सखे मित्रं त्वमेव च॥९॥
“You shall be my pillow, parasol, and fan; my brother, companion, kinsman, friend, and intimate ally.
Passage 10
मदङ्गसङ्गिनी लक्ष्मीर्न ते लज्जां विधास्यति। निर्माल्यरसास्वादपात्रत्वं वैष्णवाग्रणीः॥१०॥
“Lakṣmī, who embraces my body, will feel no reserve before you. Foremost of Vaiṣṇavas, you shall be fit to relish the remnants of my offerings.”
Passage 11
एवं दत्त्वा वरं रामस्तत्तथैवाकरोत्तराम्। सोऽपि दिव्यमहावेशधरः स्फटिकनिर्मलः॥११॥
Having granted the boon in this way, Rāma afterward made every promise true. Śeṣa assumed a great divine form, pure as crystal.
Passage 12
सहस्रवदनो देवः पार्षदप्रवरोऽभवत्। रामस्य जानकीशस्य प्रमोदवनवासिनः॥१२॥
The thousand-faced deity became the foremost attendant of Rāma, Lord of Jānakī and resident of Pramoda-vana.
Passage 13
कोशलापुरनाथस्य नित्यलीलासु संनिधिः। कमला यत्र रमते तत्रास्तेऽद्यापि सेवयन्॥१३॥
He remains present in the eternal līlās of the Lord of Kosalā’s city. Wherever Kamalā delights with Rāma, Śeṣa is there serving even now.
Passage 14
नित्यलीलारसं पश्यन् सहस्रफणवर्तिभिः। दिव्यदीपशतैर्भाति मन्दिरे दिव्यवेश्मनि॥१४॥
Beholding the rasa of eternal līlā, he shines in the divine palace with hundreds of heavenly lamps burning upon his thousand hoods.
Passage 15
एवं सर्वावतारेषु कलास्वंशेषु चाग्रणीः। उत्पत्तिलयश्चैव रामो साकेतनायकः॥१५॥
Thus Rāma, Lord of Sāketa, is foremost among every descent, power, and portion, and is both their origin and dissolution.
Passage 16
दर्शयित्वा निजे रूपे शेषाय प्रणतात्मने। दत्त्वा प्रसादमेतस्मै समदादुत्तमं पदम्॥१६॥
Having shown his own forms to the surrendered Śeṣa and bestowed grace upon him, Rāma gave him the highest station.
Passage 17
एवं कदाचिद् भगवान् कस्मैचित् संप्रसीदति। अनिर्वाच्या तदिच्छा तु न विद्मः कं सुखयिष्यति॥१७॥
In this way the Lord is sometimes fully pleased with someone. His will cannot be described; we do not know whom he will make happy.
Passage 18
गोकुलानन्दनो रामो माङ्गल्यानन्दनोऽपि च। व्रजभूनन्दनो देवः सुखितेश्वरनन्दनः॥१८॥
Rāma is the joy of Gokula and of Māṅgalyā, the joy of the land of Vraja, and the divine son who delights his royal father.
Passage 19
एवं यो गृणते रामं रमेशं प्रणतार्तिहम्। तस्यासौ वश्यतां याति भक्तिभावान्न संशयः॥१९॥
Whoever praises Rāma in this way as Lord of Ramā and remover of the surrendered devotee’s pain brings him under loving control through devotion—of this there is no doubt.
Passage 20
एवं गृणन्तो नारदाद्या मुनीन्द्राः पारे जाताः लोकसिन्धोर्दुस्तरस्य। तस्मादेवं सज्जनैः कीर्तनीयं गेयं ध्येयं चाभिधेयं च नित्यम्॥२०॥
By praising him in this way, Nārada and the other great sages crossed the otherwise impassable ocean of worldly existence. Therefore the good should always proclaim, sing, meditate upon, and utter him in this manner. Thus ends Chapter Eighty-nine, called “Granting Śeṣa’s boon,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Source note This chapter is transcribed directly from printed pages 368–370 of the 1975 Pūrva-khaṇḍa witness (source leaves 499–501). The scan controls the text and OCR was used only for location.
