Brahmā said:

Passage 1

अथ रामस्य माहात्म्यं कीर्तयामि खगेश्वर। शृणु त्वं सावधानेन मनसा रामसेवक॥१॥

Now, lord of birds and servant of Rāma, I shall proclaim Rāma’s greatness. Listen with an attentive mind.

Passage 2

कदाचिद् भगवान् शेषो राममाराद्धुमीश्वरम्। साकेते समगात् तत्र प्रापश्यद् भ्रान्ति तेजसा॥२॥

Once the blessed Śeṣa went to Sāketa to worship Lord Rāma. There the splendor of what he saw bewildered him.

Passage 3

सिंहासनानि भूरीणि रत्नहेममयानि च। स्वे स्वे धिष्ण्येऽधिष्ठितानि प्रज्वलन्तीव वर्चसा॥३॥

There were many thrones made of jewels and gold, each established in its own station and seeming to blaze with radiance.

Passage 4

पूर्वे सिंहासनेऽपश्यद् देवं वाराहरूपिणम्। दंष्ट्राकोट्युद्धृतधरं स्तूयमानं सुरर्षिभिः॥४॥

On the eastern throne he saw the Lord in the form of Varāha, who had lifted the earth upon the tip of his tusk and was praised by divine seers.

Passage 5

वेदैश्च मूर्तिसंयुक्तैस्त्रयीरूपं मखात्मकम्। भगवन्तं यज्ञरूपं भिन्नाञ्जनवनप्रभम्॥५॥

The embodied Vedas praised him as the threefold Veda, the essence and very form of sacrifice, shining like a freshly split mass of collyrium.

Passage 6

तद्वामे धरणीं देवीं स्तुवन्तीं चारुलोचनाम्। प्रसन्नवदनां कान्तां भुवं त्रैलोक्यधारिणीम्॥६॥

At his left stood the lovely-eyed goddess Earth, praising him—beautiful, serene-faced, and the bearer of the three worlds.

Passage 7

दक्षसिंहासनोदीर्णहिरण्यकशिपूदरम्। भगवन्तं नारसिंहं प्रापश्यल्लोलजिह्वकम्॥७॥

On the southern throne he saw Lord Narasiṃha, his tongue moving, after tearing open Hiraṇyakaśipu’s belly.

Passage 8

प्रह्लादेन स्तूयमानं भक्तराजेन धीमता। वामे कमलया युक्तं ज्वलद्वज्रनखप्रभम्॥८॥

The wise king of devotees, Prahlāda, praised him. Kamalā stood at his left, while his claws shone like blazing thunderbolts.

Passage 9

कोटिराकाविधुप्रख्यं कनकाङ्गविराजितम्। स्तूयमानं निगमैर्देवैर्गन्धर्वैः समुपासितम्॥९॥

His golden body shone like ten million full moons. The Vedas and gods praised him, and gandharvas attended him.

Passage 10

सिंहासने पश्चिमे तु वामनं खर्वमात्रकम्। भगवन्तं द्योतमानं यज्ञसूत्रधरं विभुम्॥१०॥

On the western throne he saw the shining, all-pervading Lord Vāmana, small in stature and wearing the sacred thread.

Passage 11

अदितिं मातरं पश्यन् कश्यपं च प्रजापतिम्। एताभ्यां स्तूयमानं तं देवकार्यहितैषिणम्॥११॥

He saw mother Aditi and the progenitor Kaśyapa praising him, the one who seeks the welfare of the gods’ cause.

Passage 12

सिंहासने चोत्तरगे मत्स्यनाथं चतुर्भुजम्। भगवन्तं विधुस्वच्छं प्रापश्यन्निगमैः स्तुतम्॥१२॥

On the northern throne he saw the four-armed Lord Matsya, pure as the moon and praised by the Vedas.

Passage 13

पूर्वोत्तरदिशोः कोणे कूर्मदेवस्य शार्ङ्गिणः। सिंहासनं पर्यपश्यज्जलधिं च सविस्तरम्॥१३॥

In the northeastern corner he saw the throne of Lord Kūrma, bearer of Śārṅga, together with the vast ocean.

पूर्वदक्षिणयोर्मध्ये बुद्धरूपं जनार्दनम्। पर्यपश्यद्देवदेवं सिंहासनवरस्थितम्॥१४॥

In the southeast he saw Janārdana in the form of Buddha, the God of gods seated upon an excellent throne.

Passage 15

यज्ञजन्मकृपावेशगृहीतावतारं विभुम्। प्रद्योतमानं महसा भगवन्तमधोक्षजम्॥१५॥

He saw the all-pervading Adhokṣaja, the Lord who assumed that descent through compassion for beings born within the sacrificial order, blazing with splendor.

Passage 16

दक्षपश्चिमयोर्मध्ये रामं क्षत्रकुलान्तकम्। पर्यपश्यज्जामदग्न्यं हेमसिंहासनस्थितम्॥१६॥

In the southwest he saw Jāmadagnya Rāma, destroyer of warrior dynasties, seated on a golden throne.

Passage 17

भगवन्तं परशुहस्तं ज्वलन्तं ब्रह्मवर्चसा। दण्डकुण्डिकया युक्तं यज्ञसूत्रविभूषितम्॥१७॥

The Lord held an axe and blazed with brahminical radiance; he bore a staff and water-pot and was adorned with the sacred thread.

Passage 18

पश्चिमोत्तरयोर्मध्ये कल्किनं कमलापतिम्। नीलाश्वगं पर्यपश्यद्रत्नसिंहासनोपरि॥१८॥

In the northwest he saw Kalkin, Lord of Kamalā, mounted on a dark-blue horse above a jeweled throne.

Passage 19

मध्यसिंहासने कान्ते कोटिसूर्याग्निवर्चसम्। रघुनाथं पर्यपश्यद्देवं जनकजापतिम्॥१९॥

Upon the beautiful central throne he saw Lord Raghunātha, husband of Janaka’s daughter, whose brilliance equaled ten million suns and fires.

Passage 20

स्मयन्तमरविन्दाक्षं वामे स्वप्रिययान्वितम्। कोटिसूर्यनखद्योतं शृङ्गाररससागरम्॥२०॥

The lotus-eyed Lord smiled, accompanied at his left by his beloved. His nails shone like ten million suns, and he was the ocean of amorous rasa.

Passage 21

रूपसारसुधौघाद्रं साक्षात् कन्दर्पसुन्दरम्। परार्धरतिसौन्दर्यां तद्वामे तस्य सुन्दरीम्॥२१॥

He was bathed in a flood of nectar, the essence of beauty, and more beautiful than Kāma himself. At his left was his lovely consort, whose beauty surpassed Ratis beyond number.

Passage 22

तद्दक्षे हयमूर्धानं भगवन्तं त्रयीमयम्। पूर्णब्रह्ममयाकारं सच्चिदानन्दविग्रहम्॥२२॥

At Rāma’s right stood the horse-headed Lord Hayagrīva, embodiment of the three Vedas, whose form consists of complete Brahman and is being, consciousness, and bliss.

Passage 23

चिन्मुद्रापुस्तकधरं मालाशङ्खविभूषितम्। चन्द्रमण्डलमध्यस्थं स्वर्णसिंहासनोपरि॥२३॥

He bore the gesture of consciousness and a book, and was adorned with a rosary and conch, seated within the moon’s orb upon a golden throne.

Passage 24

रामस्य वामपार्श्वे तु सिंहासनवरस्थितम्। श्रीकृष्णं गोपिकाकान्तं राधिकाप्रेयसीयुतम्॥२४॥

To Rāma’s left, seated upon an excellent throne, was Śrī Kṛṣṇa, beloved of the cowherd women and accompanied by his beloved Rādhikā.

Passage 25

वृन्दावनस्थितं देवं नीलतोयदसुन्दरम्। रुक्मिणीसत्यभामादिमहिषीगणसेवितम्॥२५॥

The beautiful dark-cloud-hued Lord stood in Vṛndāvana, attended by his queens, beginning with Rukmiṇī and Satyabhāmā.

Passage 26

अपश्यद्रत्नखचितस्वर्णालङ्कारभूषितम्। मयूरपक्षमुकुटं गुञ्जाहारविभूषितम्॥२६॥

Śeṣa saw him adorned with gold ornaments set with jewels, wearing a crown of peacock feathers and a necklace of guñjā berries.

मुरलीभूषितकरं त्रिभङ्गललिताकृतिम्। स्निग्धश्यामलव्यालम्बलोलालकयुताननम्॥२७॥

The flute adorned his hand and his graceful form curved in three places. Long, soft, dark, swaying curls framed his face.

Passage 28

पीतकोशेयवसनं वनमालाविभूषितम्। सुनासं सुदृशं चारु मन्दहासप्रभाधरम्॥२८॥

He wore yellow silk and a forest garland; his fine nose and beautiful eyes were lovely, and his lips shone with a gentle smile.

Passage 29

कृष्णस्य दक्षिणे पार्श्वे रौहिणेयं बलोत्तरम्। हलिनं मुशलेनाढ्यं भगवन्तं त्रयीस्तुतम्॥२९॥

At Kṛṣṇa’s right stood Rohiṇī’s mighty son, the Lord bearing plough and club, praised by the three Vedas.

Passage 30

नन्दं चैव यशोदां च रोहिणीं गोपिकास्तथा। अपश्यद्विस्मितः शेषः सिंहासनकदम्बके॥३०॥

Amid that cluster of thrones, the astonished Śeṣa also saw Nanda, Yaśodā, Rohiṇī, and the cowherd women.

Passage 31

अन्यांश्चैव तु रामस्य अवतारान् सहस्रशः। अंशरूपान् कलारूपान् साक्षादावेशिनस्तथा॥३१॥

He saw thousands of Rāma’s other descents: forms of portions, forms of powers, and direct empowered manifestations.

Passage 32

सर्वान् श्रीरामवदने दत्तदृष्टीन् गतस्मयान्। वशंवदानिवाज्ञायाः स्वतन्त्रानपि चेश्वरान्॥३२॥

All had fixed their gaze upon Śrī Rāma’s face and abandoned pride. Though themselves independent lords, they appeared obedient to his command.

अचिन्तयत् तदाशेषः संशयाकुलमानसः। अहो एषां भगवतामीश्वराणां स्ववर्चसाम्॥३३॥

Śeṣa then reflected, his mind crowded with doubt: “Ah, these blessed sovereign lords each possess their own splendor.

Passage 34

कतरं च प्रथमतो वन्देयं समवर्चसाम्। याम्ये संप्रति सर्वेषां कमहं संस्तुयां पुरा॥३४॥

“Which one among these equally radiant lords should I worship first? Now that I have approached them all, whom should I praise before the others?”

Passage 35

इति संदेहमापन्ने शेषे वैष्णवसत्तमे। राम एव व्यलीयन्त सर्वे दशरथात्मजे॥३५॥

As Śeṣa, foremost of Vaiṣṇavas, fell into this doubt, they all dissolved into Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.

येऽन्ये रामस्य परितो व्यराजन्त महौजसः। अंशरूपाः कलारूपाः विभूत्यावेशिनस्तथा॥३६॥

The other mighty beings who shone around Rāma—forms of portions, forms of powers, and empowered manifestations—

Passage 37

राम एव लयं जग्मुस्ते सर्वे तस्य पश्यतः। ततः स विस्मितो भूत्वा रामं तुष्टाव भूरिशः॥३७॥

all merged into Rāma while Śeṣa watched. Filled with wonder, he then praised Rāma abundantly. Thus ends Chapter Eighty-seven, on “The greatness of Śrī Rāma,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍi in the glorious Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Source note This chapter is transcribed directly from printed pages 362–365 of the 1975 Pūrva-khaṇḍa witness (source leaves 493–496). The scan, not OCR, controls the text. The edition numbers both the Vṛndāvana passage and the following ornament passage as 25, then continues 26–36. Because both are independent complete units, the second printed 25 is registered editorially as passage 26 and all later passages as 27–37. The printed title and opening verse both concern Rāma’s greatness; an OCR reading of rāsasya at verse 1 is therefore rejected in favor of the visible rāmasya. The descriptions identify the surrounding forms as manifestations who finally merge into Daśaratha’s son.
