Source note The root text is controlled against source leaves 461–469 of the 1975 printed edition. The edition prints passage number 21 twice. It then omits a number after printed 54 for Bhārgava’s independent line beginning कापालीमक्षमालां; the next printed number is 56. The eighty-four actual passage units are therefore registered editorially as 1–84. Speaker changes inside single units and lines printed after a unit’s marker remain with their complete dialogue unit. Difficult or irregular transmitted strings—including those in passages 6, 10–13, 17, 32, 33, 48, 62–63, and 74—are retained rather than silently replaced, while the English gives the clearest sense supported by the immediate syntax and narrative.
