Passage 1
स गत्वा मिथिलापुर्याः सविधे सह राघवः। मुनिर्मध्याह्निकीं सन्ध्यां विधिना निरवर्तयत्॥१॥
The sage travelled with the two Rāghavas to the vicinity of Mithilā and duly completed his midday observance.
Passage 2
तावद्राजकुमारौ तौ आरामश्रियमिक्षितुम्। मिथिलोपवने तत्र सुखं विविशतुर्मुदा॥२॥
Meanwhile the two princes joyfully entered a garden outside Mithilā to behold its delightful beauty.
Passage 3
तौ रामणीयकमवेक्ष्य वनस्य फुल्ल- वासन्तिकापरिमलभ्रमितालिजुष्टम्। प्राप्तो वसन्त इति तावधिजग्मतुः प्रा- गागामिभिर्मलयशैलसमीरणौघैः॥३॥
Seeing the loveliness of the grove, thronged by bees intoxicated with the fragrance of blossoming spring flowers, they concluded that spring had arrived, announced in advance by waves of wind from Mount Malaya.
Passage 4
तत्रागमच्च मिथिलेन्द्रकुमारिका सा सीता स्वयं नमितुमालयमम्बिकायाः। तां वीक्ष्य भूय उदितस्मरबाणताप- संश्रान्तचित्त इव तत्क्षणमास रामः॥४॥
Then Sītā, daughter of the king of Mithilā, came there herself to bow at Ambikā’s sanctuary. The instant Rāma saw her, his heart seemed overwhelmed by the newly risen heat of Love’s arrows. Śrī Rāma said:
Passage 5
एषा विमानादवरुह्य याति विद्याधरी चापि सुरी नरी वा। सौदामिनी वा रतिकामिनी वा शची रमा वा हिमशैलजा वा॥५॥
“Has she descended from an aerial car—a Vidyādharī, a goddess, or a mortal woman? Is she lightning itself, lovely Rati, Śacī, Ramā, or the daughter of the Himalaya?
Passage 6
न मे प्रयात्येव मनोरथान्तर्वधिष्णुभिर्निःप्रतिमैर्महोभिः। जाने ममानङ्गजतापहारिणी पीयूषधारेयमहो भविष्यति॥६॥
“Her incomparable splendours pierce the innermost course of my desire and will not depart. Ah, I know that she will become a stream of nectar that removes my love-born fever.
Passage 7
अहो अमुष्या मिलने वनेऽस्मिन् वसन्तकालोदय एष जातः। लोकोत्तरं धाम चकास्ति तावत् समन्ततो रत्नसमूहचित्रम्॥७॥
“Ah, with her appearing in this forest, the season of spring has truly arisen. An otherworldly radiance now shines everywhere, variegated like a mass of jewels.
Passage 8
अहो अपूर्वैव विभाति सृष्टिर्मन्ये न सामान्यविरञ्चिलेखा। अयोनिजां यां मुनिराह सेयं स्वभावसौन्दर्यमयीव लक्ष्मीः॥८॥
“Ah, she shines as a wholly unprecedented creation, no ordinary line drawn by Brahmā. She must be the womb-unborn maiden of whom the sage spoke—Lakṣmī herself, formed entirely of innate beauty.
Passage 9
अहो इदं चायतनं शिवायास्तामर्चितुं तावदसाविहागमत्। तत्प्रार्थयेऽहं प्रथमं महेशीमस्याः स्वयंवरविधौ मणिमल्लिकायै॥९॥
“Ah, this is Śivā’s sanctuary, and she has come here to worship the goddess. I shall first pray to the Great Lady concerning the svayaṃvara of this jewel-jasmine among maidens.
Passage 10
धन्येयं मिथिला नाम नगरीणां शिरोमणिः। यस्यामियं दृश्यते वै युवतीनां शिरोमणिः॥१०॥
“Blessed indeed is this city named Mithilā, crest-jewel of cities, within which one beholds this crest-jewel of young women.
Passage 11
रक्ताशोकलताकुञ्जे इयमेव रता मया। इदानीं नाभिजानाति मोहिता मम मायया॥११॥
“This is the very one who sported with me in the bower of red aśoka vines. Now she does not recognize me, bewildered by my own māyā.
Passage 12
आदौ प्राप्ता क्षीरसिन्धोश्च भूपालाः संगता अमी। महावीरा महेष्वासा महाबलपराक्रमाः॥१२॥
“Long ago she arose from the Ocean of Milk, and now these kings have gathered for her—great heroes and mighty archers, men of immense strength and prowess.
Passage 13
तेषां मध्ये तु मत्तोऽन्यः कोऽस्याः पाणिं ग्रहीष्यति। इति निश्चित्य मनसा धीरोऽस्मिन्नस्मि राघवः॥१३॥
“Among them, who other than me shall take her hand? Having resolved this in my heart, I, the Rāghava, stand firm in this purpose.”
Passage 14
इत्यागतां तामवलोक्य रामः शिवालये कोटितडित्प्रकाशाम्। मुमूर्च्छ वैवेति कथञ्चिदुन्मनाः संस्मृत्य गाधेयमृषिं न्यवर्तत॥१४॥
Seeing her arrive at Śiva’s sanctuary, radiant as ten million lightning flashes, Rāma almost fainted. With difficulty he recollected Gādheya, and, still distracted, turned back to the sage.
Passage 15
कृतमाध्यन्दिनविधिं मुनिं कृत्वा पुरःसरम्। धनुर्धरावाविशतां कुमारौ मिथिलां पुरीम्॥१५॥
Placing before them the sage who had completed his midday rite, the two young bowmen entered the city of Mithilā.
Passage 16
तौ पश्यतां पौरजनेक्षणानां पीयूषवृष्टिः समभूत् क्षणेन। शृङ्गारसारावयवौ मनोज्ञौ पारस्परारूढस्मरसन्निवेशौ॥१६॥
To the eyes of the townspeople who gazed upon them, the two became in an instant a shower of nectar. Their enchanting limbs embodied the essence of beauty, and mutual affection shone in their bearing.
Passage 17
तौ तत्र सम्मर्दमथो नृपाणामपश्यतामष्टदिग्भ्यो युतानाम्। सीतापणीभूतगिरीशचापपराहताव्याहतदुर्बलानाम्॥१७॥
There they saw a throng of kings assembled from all eight directions, their once-unchecked strength humbled by the bow of Giriśa, which had become the condition for winning Sītā’s hand.
Passage 18
कन्यां निरीक्ष्यामितहर्षभाजो धनुर्विलोक्यामितदुःखनिःसहाः। आजग्मुरावेगमतीव भूमिपा देवी तथेच्छा तु परं सुदुर्घटा॥१८॥
The kings had rushed there in intense excitement, filled with boundless joy on seeing the maiden yet overwhelmed by boundless grief on seeing the bow. The will of the Goddess is exceedingly difficult to accomplish.
Passage 19
तुङ्गेषु मञ्चेषु नृपालयाङ्गणे स्वां स्वां दिशं प्राप्य परिस्थिता नृपाः। संशोभयामासुरुदाररोचिषा समन्ततस्ते मिथिलेन्द्रपत्तनम्॥१९॥
The kings took their assigned places upon lofty platforms in the royal courtyard. With their noble radiance they adorned the capital of Mithilā on every side.
Passage 20
नानादिगन्तदेशेभ्यो नानानामान एव ते। सीतास्वयंवरोत्साहे संगता अभवन्नृपाः॥२०॥
Those kings, bearing many different names, had assembled from countries at every horizon in their eagerness for Sītā’s svayaṃvara.
Passage 21
तेषां संचरतां मत्तगजानां रत्नमालिनाम्। घण्टारावेण पिहिता दिशोऽष्टौ मिथिलापुरी॥२१॥
As their intoxicated elephants moved about, adorned with garlands of jewels, the ringing of their bells filled all eight directions of Mithilā.
Passage 22
सीतास्वयंवरहर्षवशंवदोऽसौ रामः सरोजदलकोमलविग्रहत्वात्। गाधेयचेतसि धनुर्विषये पुरारेरीषच्च संशयपदं व्यतनोन्मुनीशः॥२२॥
Rāma was wholly carried away by joy at Sītā’s svayaṃvara; yet because his body was tender as lotus petals, a slight doubt concerning the bow of Śiva arose in the mind of Gādheya, lord of sages.
Passage 23
त्रिशत्या वाहनानां यद्धार्यं हरधनुः क्व तत्। शिरीषप्रसवागर्भकोमलः क्व च राघवः॥२३॥
“How vast is Śiva’s bow, which must be borne by three hundred vehicles—and how tender is the Rāghava, like the inner heart of a śirīṣa blossom!”
Passage 24
इति सन्ततसन्देहदोलायितमनोगतिः। मिथिलेन्द्रगृहद्वारमगमद् गाधिनन्दनः॥२४॥
His mind continually swinging on the pendulum of doubt, Gādhi’s son reached the gateway of the king of Mithilā’s palace. --- Thus ends the seventy-fifth chapter, entitled “The Arrival at Mithilā,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa in the Śrīmad Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Textual notes The chapter begins on source leaf 448 below Chapter 74’s colophon, occupies leaves 448–450, and ends with its colophon on physical PDF page 451. All twenty-four passages were transcribed directly from the 1975 scan; archive OCR was used only as a locating and typing aid. The printed numbering proceeds cleanly from 1 through 24. Passage 3 is printed across four pāda-lines with compounds divided at line ends; they are preserved without treating those typographic breaks as separate passages. Passage 9’s मणिमल्लिकायै, passage 12’s abrupt transition after क्षीरसिन्धोश्च, and the dense compound describing Śiva’s bow in passage 17 are translated in context without silently replacing the transmitted Sanskrit. Passage 23’s first line prints the three-hundred-vehicle reading, while the edition notes an alternate reading referring to the essence of Dadhīci’s bones. No modern translation was used.
