Passage 1

यौवराज्ये स्थितो रामः शोभयामास भूतलम्। चक्षूंषि रञ्जयामास मनुजानां च पश्यताम्॥१॥

“Established as heir apparent, Rāma graced the earth and delighted the eyes of all the people who beheld him.

Passage 2

राजा दशरथः प्रीत्या संप्राप्य सुतदर्शनम्। अपूर्वपदलावण्यदर्शनाद्विस्मितोऽभवत्॥२॥

“King Daśaratha joyfully obtained the sight of his son and stood amazed at the unprecedented perfection of his beauty.

दिने दिने स्नेहमानः स्नेहो जनकभूभुजः। अलौकिके चिदानन्दे पुरुषे सफलोऽभवत्॥३॥

“Day by day the royal father’s swelling affection found its fulfillment in that otherworldly Person who is consciousness and bliss.

Passage 4

उद्भवे ज्ञानमाहात्म्यं शङ्खचक्रादिदर्शनात्। तनयत्वेन मेने स रामं नित्यशुभाकृतिम्॥४॥

“Knowledge of Rāma’s greatness had arisen from the vision of his conch, discus, and other emblems; yet the king regarded that eternally auspicious form as his own son.

Passage 5

तथापि जनतानन्दसन्दोहाभिनवाङ्कुरे। नान्यसाधारणो रामे बभूव स्नेहसागरः॥५॥

“Even so, toward Rāma—the fresh sprout of the people’s gathered joy—there arose in him an ocean of affection unlike any ordinary love.

कदाचिन्नृपतिः कृत्वा हरिनन्दातिथिव्रतम्। कलार्द्धं द्वादशीं ज्ञात्वा निराशः कृतजागरः॥६॥

“Once the king observed the sacred-day vow that delights Hari. Having fasted and kept vigil, he learned that half a kalā of the twelfth lunar day remained.

Passage 7

अनुल्लङ्घ्यासुरीं वेलां सरयूतीर्थमभ्यगात्। स्नातुं प्रविष्टं तं तीर्थेऽहरद्भृत्यः प्रचेतसः॥७॥

“Before the demonic interval had passed, he went to the sacred Sarayū. As he entered the water to bathe, a servant of Pracetas—Varuṇa—carried him away.

Passage 8

अदृष्ट्वा नृपतिं भृत्याश्चक्रुः कोलाहलं मिथः। हा हा कुत्र गतो राजा पश्यतां नः सविग्रहः॥८॥

“When the attendants could no longer see the king, they raised a tumult among themselves: ‘Alas! Where has the king gone bodily while we looked on?’

Passage 9

कौसल्यानन्दनो ज्ञात्वा जनकं यादसा हृतम्। तत्सन्निधिमगात्पूर्णं प्रविश्याम्बुनि सारवे॥९॥

“Kauśalyā’s son learned that an aquatic being had taken his father. Entering the river water, the all-perfect Lord went into that being’s presence.

Passage 10

तं दिव्यरत्नमणिहेमकिरीटजुष्ट- मूर्धानमुल्लसितपद्मदलायताक्षम्। मुक्तागणस्रजमुदारमुरो वहन्तं श्यामं ददर्श वरुणः सहसैव रामम्॥१०॥

“Varuṇa suddenly saw dark-hued Rāma: his head adorned by a crown of divine gems, jewels, and gold; his eyes broad as radiant lotus petals; and his noble chest bearing a garland of clustered pearls.

Passage 11

प्रभुं तमीडामखिलस्य भवस्य भव्यं राजीवलोचनमसावधिगम्य रामम्। देवाधिदेव इति राममुदा सपर्यां चक्रे स दिव्यमणिमौक्तिकरत्नपुञ्जैः॥११॥

“Recognizing lotus-eyed Rāma as the venerable Lord and auspicious ground of all existence, he joyfully worshiped him as God of gods with heaps of divine gems, pearls, and jewels. Varuṇa said:

Passage 12

अद्य मे पावितं वेश्म चरणाम्भोजरेणुभिः। तस्य स्पर्शाच्छिरश्चैव गाङ्गं पावनहेतुभिः॥१२॥

“Today my dwelling has been purified by the dust of your lotus feet. Through contact with those causes of purification, my head itself has become as holy as the Gaṅgā.

Passage 13

अद्यैव सफलं वर्ष्म चक्षूंषि सफलानि नः। समन्ताद्वीक्ष्यमाणानां श्यामं सुन्दरविग्रहम्॥१३॥

“Today our embodied life has become fruitful, and our eyes have become fruitful, as we gaze from every side upon your beautiful dark form.

Passage 14

अवितर्क्योऽसि पूर्णोऽसि स्वयं ज्योतिरसि प्रभो। तथाप्यवतरन्नृणां तनुषे सगुणां धियम्॥१४॥

“You are beyond conjecture, complete, and self-luminous, O Lord. Yet when you descend among human beings, you extend to them a conception of you through divine qualities.

Passage 15

ते गुणानां न सङ्गोऽस्ति ब्रह्मणः परमात्मनः। तथापि कृपया देव दृश्योऽसि जगतो दृशः॥१५॥

“You, the Supreme Self and Brahman, have no attachment to the qualities. Yet by your mercy, O God, you become visible to the eyes of the world.

Passage 16

त्वत्सङ्गिनो दृशिरसौ रघुवंशकेतो चेतोगतिः समतिवर्त्य जयन्ति शश्वत्। इच्छावशात्तव कृपामृतसागरस्य भूयो जवेन जनतां भृशमुद्धिधीर्षोः॥१६॥

“Those who belong to you forever prevail beyond the courses of sight and mind, O banner of Raghu’s line. Such is the will of you, the ocean of mercy’s nectar, who urgently desire to raise the people up once again.

Passage 17

न तेऽस्ति माता न पिता कुतस्ते सहोदरा बन्धवोऽव्यक्तमूर्तेः। तथापि लीलामधिगम्य रम्यां सर्वस्वरूपो भवसीह सद्यः॥१७॥

“You have no mother and no father; how could the One whose form is unmanifest have siblings or kinsmen? Yet on entering your delightful play, you at once become every one of these forms here.

Passage 18

त्वमेव सुखितो गोपो माङ्गल्या च त्वमेव हि। त्वमेव गोप्यो गोपाश्च त्वं प्रमोदवनं हरे॥१८॥

“You alone are the cowherd Sukhita, and you alone are Māṅgalyā. You alone are the cowherd women and men, and you are Pramoda forest, O Hari.

Passage 19

त्वमयोध्यापुरी विष्णो त्वं वै दशरथो नृपः। त्वं कौशल्या च सा माता लीलामानुषविग्रहः॥१९॥

“You are the city of Ayodhyā, O Viṣṇu, and you are King Daśaratha. You are also that mother Kauśalyā—you whose human form belongs to divine play.

Passage 20

वैकुण्ठवासी देवेश त्वमेवाङ्ग रमापतिः। यः क्षीरसागरे शेते निगमैः समभिष्टुतः॥२०॥

“O Lord of gods, dear Lord, you yourself are Ramā’s consort who dwells in Vaikuṇṭha, who reclines upon the Ocean of Milk and is praised on every side by the Vedas.

Passage 21

यश्च वेदमयो देवो भगवानक्षरात्मकः। स्वराट् सहस्रवदनः सा ते मूर्तिर्गिरात्मिका॥२१॥

“The God who is formed of the Veda, Bhagavān whose nature is imperishable, the self-ruling thousand-faced Lord—that is your form whose essence is sacred speech.

Passage 22

नमस्ते रामचन्द्राय कल्याणगुणसिन्धवे। परमानन्दकन्दाय परमज्योतिरात्मने॥२२॥

“Homage to you as Rāmacandra, ocean of auspicious qualities, root of supreme bliss, whose own nature is the highest light.

Passage 23

भूर्भुवःस्वःस्वरूपाय विराजपुरुषाय ते। महते विश्वरूपाय परस्मै प्रकृतेर्नमः॥२३॥

“Homage to you whose form is earth, mid-region, and heaven; to the cosmic Person Virāj; to the great universal form, supreme beyond material nature.

Passage 24

इत्यभिष्टूय सर्वज्ञो रामचन्द्रं रघूद्वहम्। प्रचेताः सहसात्मानं पातयामास पादयोः॥२४॥

“Having praised Rāmacandra, the exalted scion of Raghu, in this way, the all-knowing Pracetas suddenly cast himself down at his feet.

Passage 25

उत्थापयामास समात्तबन्धुः प्रचेतसं राघवसार्वभौमः। तमुत्थितः पाशधरो ददर्श धनुर्धरं कञ्जविशालनेत्रम्॥२५॥

“The sovereign Rāghava, who had accepted him as his own, raised Pracetas up. Standing again, the bearer of the noose beheld the bow-bearing Lord whose eyes were broad as lotuses.

Passage 26

रामचन्द्र इति ज्ञात्वा नत्वा चैव पुनः पुनः। नृपं दशरथं नत्वा समर्प्य प्रभवे ततः॥२६॥

“Knowing him to be Rāmacandra, Varuṇa bowed again and again. He then bowed to King Daśaratha and delivered the king to the Lord.

Passage 27

विसर्जयामास पुराद्रामं त्रिभुवनेश्वरः। राजा सहोन्ममज्जासौ पश्यतां सरयूजले॥२७॥

“The lord of the three worlds dismissed Rāma from his city. Before everyone’s eyes, Rāma surfaced together with the king in the waters of the Sarayū.

Passage 28

प्रत्यङ्गं भूषितो रत्नैर्वरुणेनोपदीकृतैः। आनन्दमज्जनांस्तत्र आनिनाय पितरं जवात्॥२८॥

“With every limb adorned by jewels that Varuṇa had presented, Rāma swiftly brought back his father, plunging the people there into joy.

Passage 29

तदा जयेति निर्घोषोऽभवत्साकेतपत्तने। पुत्रप्रभावेणानीतो राजा दशरथः पुनः॥२९॥

“Then a thunderous cry of ‘Victory!’ arose throughout the city of Sāketa: King Daśaratha had been brought back by the power of his son.

Passage 30

अहो रामस्य सामर्थ्यं निन्ये मां वरुणालयात्। इति चित्रान्वितो राजा बभूव भृशहर्षितः॥३०॥

“‘How wondrous is Rāma’s power! He has led me out of Varuṇa’s abode.’ Filled with amazement at this, the king became exceedingly joyful.” --- Thus ends the sixty-second chapter, entitled “Daśaratha’s Return,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa in the Śrīmad Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Textual notes The chapter begins on source leaf 406 immediately after Chapter 61’s colophon, occupies leaves 406–409, and ends with its colophon on physical PDF page 410. All thirty numbered passages were transcribed directly from the 1975 scan; archive OCR was used only as a locating and typing aid. The edition presents a clean sequence of passages 1–30. Passages 10, 11, 16, 17, and 25 are extended metrical units retained under their single printed numbers. The scan’s difficult or irregular main-text strings in passages 3 (स्नेहमानः), 4 (उद्भवे ज्ञानमाहात्म्यं), 9 (सारवे), 11 (तमीडामखिलस्य), 12 (गाङ्गं), 16 (दृशिरसौ and चेतोगतिः), 23 (परस्मै प्रकृतेः), and 28 (आनन्दमज्जनान्) have not been silently replaced with conjectural readings; the English follows the secure contextual sense.
