Passage 1
अथ त्रयोदशतमे दिने नामविधित्सया। कुमाराणां सुजनुषां परमायुश्चिकीर्षया॥१॥
Then, on the thirteenth day, the naming was to be performed for the well-born princes, with the wish to secure their fullest span of life.
Passage 2
वसिष्ठो वंशपौरौधा मुदायुक्तः समाययौ। राज्ञो दशरथस्यान्तःपुरे सर्वसमृद्धने॥२॥
Vasiṣṭha, hereditary priest of the lineage, arrived joyfully in King Daśaratha’s inner palace, which abounded in every prosperity.
Passage 3
समायातं मुनिश्रेष्ठं राजा दशरथोऽग्रहीत्। अहो मे भाग्यसम्पत्त्या सङ्गतोऽद्य पुरोहितः॥३॥
King Daśaratha received the eminent sage when he arrived. “Ah, through the fullness of my good fortune, our priest has joined us today.”
Passage 4
प्राजापत्यो मुनिश्रेष्ठः परमानन्ददर्शनः। नमस्ते मुनिशार्दूल प्राजापत्य महाप्रभो॥४॥
“Foremost sage born of Prajāpati, whose very sight gives supreme joy; reverence to you, tiger among sages, mighty Prajāpatya lord.” Vasiṣṭha said
Passage 5
नरेन्द्र वत ते भाग्यं जातोऽसि तनु पुत्रवान्॥५॥
King, how wonderful is your fortune: you have now become the father of sons.
Passage 6
तेषामहं कुमाराणां नामकृत्यं सुखप्रदम्। तवाज्ञया विधास्यामि यद्गोप्यममरैरपि॥६॥
By your command I shall perform the joy-giving naming of those princes—a mystery kept hidden even from the gods.
Passage 7
अहो अमी प्रभोरंशा रामस्यामिततेजसः। योऽसौ तव कुमाराणामग्रणी राम एव सः॥७॥
Ah, these are portions of the Lord, Rāma of limitless splendour. The foremost of your princes is Rāma himself.
Passage 8
अस्य चत्वार एवांशा ब्रह्मरूपाः सनातनाः। वासुदेवः सङ्कर्षणः प्रद्युम्नश्चानिरुद्धकः॥८॥
His four eternal portions, forms of Brahman, are Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha.
Passage 9
चत्वार एते पुरुषाः स्वस्वकार्यविधायकाः। धर्मरूपास्तु रामस्य पुरुषोत्तमरूपिणः॥९॥
These four persons each accomplish their own work. They are forms of the dharma of Rāma, whose form is Puruṣottama.
Passage 10
ततः संस्थातसंस्कारान्मन्त्रितान् विधिवर्त्मना। नामानि चक्रे ब्रह्मर्षिः कोटिकल्पविदुत्तमः॥१०॥
Then, after completing the consecratory rites and mantras according to rule, the brahmarṣi—foremost knower of millions of kalpas—bestowed the names.
Passage 11
रामः श्यामो हरिर्विष्णुः केशवः केशिनाशनः। नारायणो माधवश्च श्रीधरो मधुसूदनः॥११॥
Rāma; the dark-hued one; Hari; Viṣṇu; Keśava; destroyer of Keśin; Nārāyaṇa; Mādhava; bearer of Śrī; and slayer of Madhu.
Passage 12
रावणारिः कंसनिहा बकीप्राणनिवर्तनः। ताडकाहननोद्युक्तो विश्वामित्रप्रियः कृती॥१२॥
Enemy of Rāvaṇa; slayer of Kaṃsa; taker of the crane-demoness Bakī’s life; intent upon killing Tāḍakā; dear to Viśvāmitra; and accomplished.
Passage 13
वेदाङ्गो यज्ञवाराहो धर्मज्ञो मेदिनीपतिः। वासुदेवोऽरविन्दाक्षो गोविन्दो गोपतिः प्रभुः॥१३॥
Limb of the Veda; the sacrificial Boar; knower of dharma; lord of the earth; Vāsudeva; lotus-eyed; Govinda; lord of the cows; and sovereign Lord.
Passage 14
पद्माकान्तो विकुण्ठाभूः कीर्तिकन्यासुखप्रदः। जानकीप्राणनाथश्च सीताविश्लेषनाशनः॥१४॥
Beloved of Padmā; source of Vaikuṇṭha; giver of joy to the maiden Kīrti; lord of Jānakī’s life; and destroyer of separation from Sītā.
Passage 15
मुकुन्दो मुक्तिदाता च कौस्तुभी करुणाकरः। खरदूषणनाशी च मारीचप्राणनाशकः॥१५॥
Mukunda; giver of liberation; wearer of the Kaustubha; mine of compassion; destroyer of Khara and Dūṣaṇa; and destroyer of Mārīca’s life.
Passage 16
सुबाहुमारणोत्साही पक्षिश्राद्धविधायकः। विहङ्गपितृसम्बन्धी क्षणतुष्टो गतिप्रदः॥१६॥
Eager to kill Subāhu; performer of the bird-king’s funerary rite; one who accepted that bird as a father; quickly pleased; and giver of the final state.
Passage 17
पूतनामातृगतिदो विनिवृत्ततृणानिलः। पावनः परमानन्दः कालिन्दीजलकेलिकृत्॥१७॥
Giver of a mother’s blessed destination to Pūtanā; stopper of the whirlwind Tṛṇāvarta; purifier; supreme bliss; and player in the Yamunā’s waters.
Passage 18
सरयूजलकेलिश्च साकेतपुरदैवतः। मथुरास्थाननिलयो विश्रुतात्मा त्रयीस्तुतः॥१८॥
Player in the Sarayū’s waters; deity of the city of Sāketa; resident in Mathurā; renowned in essence; and praised by the threefold Veda.
Passage 19
कौन्तेयविजयोद्युक्तः सेतुकृत् सिन्धुगर्भवित्। सप्ततालप्रभेदी च महास्थिक्षेपणोद्धुरः॥१९॥
Intent upon the Pāṇḍavas’ victory; builder of the bridge; knower of the ocean’s depths; piercer of seven palm trees; and mighty hurler of the great skeleton.
Passage 20
कौशल्यानन्दनः कृष्णः किशोरीजनवल्लभः। आभीरीवल्लभो वीरः कोटिकन्दर्पविग्रहः॥२०॥
Son and joy of Kauśalyā; Kṛṣṇa; beloved of the young women; beloved of the cowherd women; hero; and embodied beauty equal to millions of Cupids.
Passage 21
गोवर्द्धनगिरिग्रासी गोवर्द्धनगिरीश्वरः। गोकुलेशो व्रजेशश्च सहजाप्राणवल्लभः॥२१॥
Devourer of Mount Govardhana; lord of Mount Govardhana; lord of Gokula; lord of Vraja; and beloved as life to Sahajā.
Passage 22
भूलीलाकेलिसन्तोषी वामाकोटिप्रसादनः। भिल्लपत्नीकृपासिन्धुः कैवर्त्तकरुणाकरः॥२२॥
Delighted by the play of earthly līlā; pleaser of millions of women; ocean of grace to the Bhilla women; and mine of compassion for the boatman.
Passage 23
जाम्बवद्भक्तिदो भोक्ता जाम्बवत्यङ्गनापतिः। सीताप्रियो रुक्मिणीशः कल्याणगुणसागरः॥२३॥
Giver of devotion to Jāmbavān; enjoyer; husband of the lady Jāmbavatī; beloved of Sītā; lord of Rukmiṇī; and ocean of auspicious virtues.
Passage 24
भक्तप्रियो दाशरथिः कैटभारिः कृतोत्सवः। कदम्बवनमध्यस्थः शिलासन्तारदायकः॥२४॥
Lover of devotees; son of Daśaratha; enemy of Kaiṭabha; maker of festivities; dwelling amid the kadamba grove; and giver of passage to the stone.
Passage 25
राघवो रघुवीरश्च हनुमत्सख्यवर्द्धनः। पीताम्बरोऽच्युतः श्रीमान् श्रीगोपीजनवल्लभः॥२५॥
Scion of Raghu; hero of Raghu’s line; increaser of friendship with Hanumān; yellow-robed; infallible; glorious; and beloved of the blessed gopīs.
Passage 26
भक्तेष्टो भक्तिदाता च भार्गवद्विजगर्वजित्। कोदण्डरामः क्रोधात्मा लङ्काविजयपण्डितः॥२६॥
Cherished by devotees; giver of devotion; conqueror of the Bhārgava brahmin’s pride; Rāma of the Kodaṇḍa bow; wrathful; and master of Laṅkā’s conquest.
Passage 27
कुम्भकर्णनिहन्ता च युवा कैशोरसुन्दरः। वनमाली घनश्यामो गोचारणपराक्रमी॥२७॥
Slayer of Kumbhakarṇa; youthful; beautiful in adolescence; wearing a forest garland; dark as a rain cloud; and valiant in tending the cows.
Passage 28
काकपक्षधरो वेषी विटो धृष्टः शठः पतिः। अनुकूलो दक्षिणश्च तारः कपटकोविदः॥२८॥
Wearing side-locks like crow’s wings; costumed; a gallant; bold; a rogue; the lord; agreeable; dexterous; deliverer; and expert in artful disguise.
Passage 29
अश्वमेधप्रणेता च राजा दशरथात्मजः। राघवेन्द्रो महाराजः श्रीरामानन्दविग्रहः॥२९॥
Institutor of the horse sacrifice; king; son of Daśaratha; moon among the Rāghavas; great sovereign; and embodiment of blessed Rāma’s bliss.
Passage 30
क्षत्रः क्षत्रकुलोत्तंसो महातेजाः प्रतापवान्। महासैन्यो महाचापो लक्ष्मणैकान्तसुप्रियः॥३०॥
Royal power; crest-jewel of the warrior line; greatly radiant; majestic; possessing a great army and great bow; and Lakṣmaṇa’s sole and dearest beloved.
Passage 31
कैकेयीप्रणनिर्माता वीतराज्यो वनालयः। चित्रकूटप्रियस्थानो मृगयाचारतत्परः॥३१॥
Originator of Kaikeyī’s pledge; bereft of kingship; dwelling in the forest; holding Citrakūṭa dear as his abode; and intent upon the ways of the hunt.
Passage 32
किरातवेषः क्रूरात्मा पशुमांसैकभोजनः। फलपुष्पकृताहारः कन्दमूलनिषेवणः॥३२॥
Dressed as a forest hunter; fierce in nature; eating animal flesh alone; also making a meal of fruits and flowers; and partaking of bulbs and roots.
Passage 33
पयोव्रतो विधानज्ञः सद्धर्मप्रतिपालकः। गदाधरो यज्ञकर्ता श्राद्धकर्ता द्विजार्चकः॥३३॥
Observer of the milk vow; knower of ordinance; guardian of true dharma; bearer of the mace; performer of sacrifice and ancestral rite; worshipper of brahmins.
Passage 34
पितृभक्तो मातृभक्तो बन्धुः स्वजनतोषकृत्। मत्स्यः कूर्मो नृसिंहश्च वराहो वामनस्तथा॥३४॥
Devoted to father; devoted to mother; kinsman; delighter of his own people; Fish, Tortoise, Man-lion, Boar, and Dwarf.
Passage 35
रघुरामः परशुरामो बलरामो रमापतिः। रामलिङ्गस्थापयिता शिवभक्तिपरायणः॥३५॥
Rāma of Raghu’s line; Paraśurāma; Balarāma; husband of Ramā; establisher of the Rāma-liṅga; and wholly devoted to Śiva-bhakti.
Passage 36
चण्डिकार्चनकृत्यज्ञश्चण्डीपाठविधानवित्। अष्टमीव्रतकर्मज्ञो विजयादशमीप्रियः॥३६॥
Knower of the rites of Caṇḍikā’s worship; knower of the rule for reciting the Caṇḍī; knower of the eighth-day vow; and lover of Vijayā-daśamī.
Passage 37
कपिसैन्यसमारम्भी सुग्रीवप्राणदः परः। सूर्यवंशध्वजो धीरो ब्रह्मण्यो ब्राह्मणप्रियः॥३७॥
Assembler of the monkey army; giver of life to Sugrīva; supreme; banner of the solar line; steadfast; devoted to sacred learning; and lover of brahmins.
Passage 38
ब्रह्मार्पणी ब्रह्महोता ब्रह्मकर्मविदुत्तमः। ब्रह्मज्ञो ब्राह्मणाचारः कृतकृत्यः सनातनः॥३८॥
Offerer into Brahman; priest of Brahman; foremost knower of sacred action; knower of Brahman; follower of brahminical conduct; fulfilled; and eternal.
Passage 39
सच्चिदानन्दरूपश्च निरीहो निर्विकारकः। नित्याकारो निराधारो रामो रमयतां वरः॥३९॥
Whose form is being, consciousness, and bliss; desireless; changeless; of eternal form; without dependence; Rāma; and foremost of those who give delight.
Passage 40
रकारादिर्मकारादिः रामः कैवल्यमङ्गलः। सन्दर्भो संशयच्छेत्ता शेषशायी सतां गतिः॥४०॥
Beginning with ra and ending with ma; Rāma; auspiciousness of liberation; coherent connection; cutter of doubt; reclining on Śeṣa; and goal of the good.
Passage 41
पुरुषः पुरुषाकारः प्रमेयः पुरुषोत्तमः। वंशीधरो विहारज्ञो रसानन्दीजितस्मरः॥४१॥
The Person; human in form; knowable; the Supreme Person; flute-bearer; knower of divine play; rejoicing in rasa; and conqueror of the god of love.
Passage 42
पूर्णातिथिविनोदी च वृन्दावनविलासकृत्। रत्नकटकधरो वीरो मुक्ताहारविभूषणः॥४२॥
Delighting on the full-moon day; sporting in Vṛndāvana; wearing jeweled bracelets; heroic; and adorned with a necklace of pearls.
Passage 43
नृत्यप्रियो नृत्यकरो नित्यसीताविहारवान्। महालक्ष्मीदृढानन्दो प्रमोदवननायकः॥४३॥
Lover and maker of dance; ever sporting with Sītā; whose joy in Mahālakṣmī is steadfast; and lord of the Pramoda forest.
Passage 44
परप्रेमा परानन्दः परभक्तिस्वरूपकः। अग्निरूपः कालरूपः प्रलयान्तमहानलः॥४४॥
Supreme love; supreme bliss; embodiment of supreme devotion; fire in form; time in form; and the great blaze at the end of dissolution.
Passage 45
सुप्रसन्नः प्रसादात्मा प्रसन्नास्यः परः प्रभुः। प्रीतः प्रीतमनाः प्रीतिः शकटासुरभञ्जनः॥४५॥
Perfectly gracious; gracious in nature; bright-faced; supreme Lord; pleased; loving in mind; love itself; and destroyer of the cart-demon.
Passage 46
खट्वासुरवधोद्युक्तः कालरूपो दुरन्तकः। हंसः स्मरसहस्रात्मा स्मरणीयो रुचिप्रदः॥४६॥
Intent upon slaying Khaṭvāsura; time in form; impossible to overcome; the Swan; essence of a thousand Cupids; worthy of remembrance; and giver of delight.
Passage 47
पण्डा पण्डितमानी च वेदरूपः सरस्वती। गुह्यार्थदो गुरुर्देवो मन्त्रज्ञो मन्त्रदीक्षितः॥४७॥
Wisdom; esteemed as learned; the Veda in form; Sarasvatī; giver of hidden meaning; teacher; deity; knower of mantra; and initiated into mantra.
Passage 48
योगज्ञो योगविन्नाथः स्वात्मयोगविशारदः। अध्यात्मशास्त्रसारज्ञो रसरूपो रसात्मकः॥४८॥
Knower of yoga; master among knowers of yoga; adept in union with his own Self; knower of spiritual teaching’s essence; rasa in form and in nature.
Passage 49
शृङ्गारवेशो मदनो मानिनीमानवर्द्धनः। चन्दनद्रवसंशीतश्चन्दनद्रवलेपनः॥४९॥
Dressed for love’s play; the god of love; increaser of a proud beloved’s loving reserve; cooled with liquid sandalwood; and anointed with sandal paste.
Passage 50
श्रीवत्सलाञ्छनः श्रीमान् मानी मानुषविग्रहः। करणं कारणं कर्ताऽऽधारो विधरणो धरः॥५०॥
Marked by the Śrīvatsa; glorious; possessed of honor; embodied as a human; instrument, cause, and agent; foundation; sustainer; and bearer.
Passage 51
धरित्रीधरणो धीरः स्त्र्यधीशः सत्यवाक् प्रियः। सत्यकृत् सत्रकर्ता च कर्मी कर्मविवर्द्धनः॥५१॥
Bearer of the earth; steadfast; lord of women; truthful in speech; beloved; maker of truth; performer of sacrifice; active; and increaser of sacred action.
Passage 52
कार्मुकी विशिखी शक्तिधरो विजयदायकः। ऊर्ज्जस्वलो बली जिष्णुर्लङ्केशप्राणनाशकः॥५२॥
Armed with bow, arrows, and spear; giver of victory; vigorous; strong; triumphant; and destroyer of the lord of Laṅkā’s life.
Passage 53
शिशुपालप्रहन्ता च दन्तवक्त्रविनाशनः। परमोत्साहनोऽसह्यः कलिदोषविनाशनः॥५३॥
Slayer of Śiśupāla; destroyer of Dantavaktra; supremely encouraging; irresistible; and destroyer of the faults of the Kali age.
Passage 54
जरासन्धमहायुद्धो निःकिञ्चनजनप्रियः। द्वारकास्थाननिर्माता मथुरावासशून्यकृत्॥५४॥
Wager of the great war with Jarāsandha; beloved of the destitute; builder of the abode at Dvārakā; and emptier of the dwelling at Mathurā.
Passage 55
काकुत्स्थो विनयी वाग्मी मनस्वी दक्षिणाप्रदः। प्राच्यवाचीप्रतीच्युक्तदक्षिणो भूरिदक्षिणः॥५५॥
Kākutstha; humble; eloquent; high-minded; giver of sacrificial gifts; speaking eastward and addressed westward; skillful; and lavish in gifts.
Passage 56
दक्षयज्ञसमानेता विश्वकेलिः सुरार्चितः। देवाधिपो दिवोदासो दिवास्वापी दिवाकरः॥५६॥
Restorer of Dakṣa’s sacrifice; whose play is the universe; worshipped by the gods; lord of the gods; Divodāsa; sleeping by day; and the sun.
Passage 57
कमलाक्षः कृपावासो द्विजपत्नीमनोहरः। विभीषणशरण्यश्च शरणं परमा गतिः॥५७॥
Lotus-eyed; abode of grace; enchanter of the brahmins’ wives; refuge of Vibhīṣaṇa; refuge itself; and the supreme destination.
Passage 58
चाणूरबलनिर्माथी महामातङ्गनाशनः। बद्धकक्षो महामल्ली मल्लयुद्धविशारदः॥५८॥
Crusher of Cāṇūra’s strength; destroyer of the great elephant; girded for combat; great wrestler; and adept in wrestling.
Passage 59
अप्रमेयः प्रमेयात्मा प्रमाणात्मा सनातनः। मर्यादावतरो विज्ञो मर्यादापुरुषोत्तमः॥५९॥
Immeasurable; whose nature is knowable and authoritative; eternal; incarnation of moral bounds; discerning; and the Supreme Person of moral bounds.
Passage 60
महाक्रतुविधानज्ञः क्रतुकर्मा क्रतुप्रियः। वृषस्कन्धो वृषस्कन्दो वृषध्वजमहासखः॥६०॥
Knower of the rules for great sacrifices; performer and lover of sacrifice; bull-shouldered; bearing dharma’s strength; and great friend of the Bull-bannered Śiva.
Passage 61
चक्री शार्ङ्गी गदापाणिः शङ्खभृत् सुस्मिताननः। योगध्यानी योगगम्यो योगाचार्यो दृढासनः॥६१॥
Bearer of discus, Śārṅga bow, mace, and conch; sweetly smiling; meditating in yoga; reached through yoga; teacher of yoga; and firm in posture.
Passage 62
जिताहारो मिताहारः परहा दिग्जयोद्धुरः। सुपर्णासनसंस्थाता गजाभो गजमोक्षणः॥६२॥
Master of appetite; moderate in food; destroyer of foes; mighty in conquering the directions; seated upon Garuḍa; elephant-like; and liberator of the elephant.
Passage 63
गजगामी ज्ञानगम्यो भक्तिगम्यो भयापहः। भगवान् सुमहैश्वर्यः परमः परमामृतः॥६३॥
Walking like an elephant; reached through knowledge and devotion; remover of fear; the Blessed Lord; possessed of vast sovereignty; supreme; and supreme nectar.
Passage 64
स्वानन्दी सच्चिदानन्दी नन्दिग्रामनिकेतनः। वर्होत्तंसः कलाकान्तः कालरूपः कलाकरः॥६४॥
Rejoicing in his own bliss and in being-consciousness-bliss; dwelling in Nandigrāma; crested with a peacock feather; lord of arts; time in form; source of arts.
Passage 65
कमनीयः कुमाराभो मुचुकुन्दगतिप्रदः। मुक्तिभूरिफलाकारः कारुण्यधृतविग्रहः॥६५॥
Lovely; resembling a prince; giver of the final state to Mucukunda; form of liberation’s abundant fruit; and one who assumed embodiment through compassion.
Passage 66
भूलीलारमणोद्युक्तः शतधाकृतविग्रहः। रसास्वादी रसानन्दी रसातलविनोदकृत्॥६६॥
Intent on enjoying earthly līlā; assuming a hundred forms; tasting rasa; rejoicing in rasa; and making delight even in Rasātala.
Passage 67
अप्रतर्क्यः पुनीतात्मा विनीतात्मा विधानवित्। भुज्युः सभाजनः सभ्यः पण्डः पण्डुर्विपण्यजः॥६७॥
Beyond reasoning; purified in self; humble in self; knower of ordinance; Bhujyu; honored in assembly; courteous; Paṇḍa; pale; and born in the marketplace.
Passage 68
चर्षणी उत्कटो वीतो वित्तदः सविताऽविता। विभवो विविधाकारो रामः कल्याणसागरः॥६८॥
Active among people; formidable; free; giver of wealth; the impeller and protector; all-pervading power; manifold in form; Rāma; and ocean of auspiciousness.
Passage 69
सीतास्वयंवरोद्युक्तो हरकार्मुकभञ्जनः। रावणोन्मादशमनः सीताविरहकातरः॥६९॥
Intent upon Sītā’s self-choice ceremony; breaker of Hara’s bow; subduer of Rāvaṇa’s frenzy; and anguished in separation from Sītā.
Passage 70
कुमारकुशलः कामः कामदः कीर्तिवर्द्धनः। दुर्योधनमहावैरी युधिष्ठिरहितप्रदः॥७०॥
Skilled as a prince; love; fulfiller of desire; increaser of fame; great enemy of Duryodhana; and giver of welfare to Yudhiṣṭhira.
Passage 71
द्रौपदीचीरविस्तारी कुन्तीशोकनिवारणः। गान्धारीशोकसन्तानः कृपाकोमलमानसः॥७१॥
Extender of Draupadī’s garment; remover of Kuntī’s sorrow; continuer of Gāndhārī’s grief; and tender-hearted through compassion.
Passage 72
चित्रकूटकृतावासो गङ्गासलिलपावनः। ब्रह्मचारी सदाचारः कमलाकेलिभाजनः॥७२॥
Making his home at Citrakūṭa; purifier of Gaṅgā’s water; celibate student; of good conduct; and participant in Kamalā’s play.
Passage 73
दुरासदः कलहकृत् कलिः कलिविनाशनः। चारी दण्डाजिनी छत्री पुस्तकी कृष्णमेखलः॥७३॥
Unapproachable; maker of conflict; strife itself; destroyer of Kali; wandering ascetic with staff and antelope skin, umbrella, book, and black girdle.
Passage 74
दण्डकारण्यमध्यस्थः पञ्चवट्यालयस्थितः। परिणामजयानन्दी नन्दिग्रामसुखप्रदः॥७४॥
Dwelling amid Daṇḍakāraṇya; residing at Pañcavaṭī; rejoicing in the final victory; and giver of happiness to Nandigrāma.
Passage 75
इन्द्रारिमानमथनो बद्धदक्षिणसागरः। शैलसेतुविनिर्माता कपिसैन्यमहीपतिः॥७५॥
Crusher of the pride of Indra’s foe; binder of the southern ocean; builder of the stone bridge; and sovereign of the monkey army.
Passage 76
रथारूढो गजारूढो हयारूढो महाबली। निषङ्गी कवची खड्गी खलगर्वनिवहणः॥७६॥
Mounted on chariot, elephant, and horse; immensely strong; bearing quiver, armor, and sword; and carrying away the pride of the wicked.
Passage 77
वेदान्तविज्ञो विज्ञानी जानकीब्रह्मदर्शनः। लङ्काजेता विमानस्थो नागपाशविमोचकः॥७७॥
Knower of Vedānta; possessed of realization; beholder of Jānakī as Brahman; conqueror of Laṅkā; seated in the aerial car; and releaser from the serpent noose.

अनन्तकोटिगणभूः कल्याणः केलिनीपतिः। दुर्वासापूजनपरो वनवासी महाजवः॥७८॥
Source of innumerable hosts; auspicious; lord of the playful women; devoted to worshipping Durvāsā; forest-dweller; and immensely swift.
Passage 79
सुस्मयः सुस्मितमुखः कालियाहिफणानटः। विभुर्विषहरो वत्सो वत्सासुरविनाशनः॥७९॥
Wonderfully smiling; sweet-faced; dancer upon the serpent Kāliya’s hoods; all-pervading; remover of poison; the calf; and destroyer of Vatsāsura.

वृषप्रमथनो वेत्ता मरीचिर्मुनिरङ्गिराः। वसिष्ठो द्रोणपुत्रश्च द्रोणाचार्यो रघूत्तमः॥८०॥

Foremost of the Raghus; destroyer of sorrow; wearied by running in the forest; dweller in a Bhilla village; and giver of welfare to Bhilla men and women.

रामो रविकुलोत्तंसः वृष्णिगर्भो महामणिः। यशोदाबन्धनप्राप्तो यमलार्जुनभञ्जनः॥८२॥
Rāma; crest-jewel of the solar line; born in the Vṛṣṇi line; great jewel; bound by Yaśodā; and breaker of the twin arjuna trees.

अनन्तोऽनन्तमाता च रामो राजीवलोचनः। इत्येवं नामसाहस्रं राजेन्द्र तनयस्य ते॥८७॥
Endless; mother of Ananta; Rāma; lotus-eyed. Thus, king of kings, is the thousand-name hymn of your son.
Passage 88
यः पठेत्प्रातरुत्थाय धौतपादः शुचिव्रतः। स याति रामसायुज्यं भुक्त्वान्ते केवलं पदम्॥८८॥
Whoever rises in the morning, washes his feet, observes purity, and recites it reaches union with Rāma and, after worldly enjoyment, the absolute state.
Passage 89
न यत्र त्रिगुणग्रासो न माया न स्मयो मदः। तद्याति विरजं स्थानं रामनामानुकीर्तयन्॥८९॥
By chanting Rāma’s names, one reaches that stainless realm where the three qualities do not consume, and where there is no māyā, conceit, or pride.

न ते पुत्रस्य नामानि सङ्ख्यातुमहमीश्वरः। सङ्क्षेपेण तु यत्प्रोक्तं तन्मात्रमवधारय॥९०॥
I am not capable of counting your son’s names. Understand what I have spoken only as an abridgment.
Passage 91
यावन्ति सन्ति रूपाणि विष्णोरमिततेजसः। तावन्ति तव पुत्रस्य परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणः॥९१॥
As many forms as immeasurably radiant Viṣṇu possesses, so many belong to your son, whose nature is the Supreme Brahman.
Passage 92
पाञ्चभौतिकमेतद्धि विश्वं समुपधारय। ततः परं परब्रह्म विद्धि रामं सनातनम्॥९२॥
Understand this universe to be composed of the five elements. Beyond it, know eternal Rāma as the Supreme Brahman.
Passage 93
नश्वरं सकलं दृश्यं रामं ब्रूमः सनातनम्। एतद्धि तव पुत्रत्वं प्राप्तो रामः परात्परः॥९३॥
Everything visible is perishable, but we declare Rāma eternal. Rāma, higher than the highest, has indeed entered the state of being your son.
Passage 94
सद्वेदैरपि वेदान्तैर्नेति नेतीति गीयते। तमेव जलदश्यामं रामं भावय भावय॥९४॥
Even the true Vedas and Vedāntas sing of him as “not this, not this.” Contemplate, contemplate that very Rāma, dark as a rain cloud.
Passage 95
य एतत् पठते नित्यं रामसाहस्रकं विभो। स याति परमां मुक्तिं रामकैवल्यरूपिणीम्॥९५॥
Lord, whoever recites this thousand-name hymn of Rāma every day reaches the highest liberation, whose form is absolute union with Rāma.
Passage 96
मा शङ्किष्ठा नराधीशः श्रीरामरसिकस्य च। अनन्तकोटिरूपाणि रामस्तेषां विभावकः॥९६॥
Do not doubt, lord of men, the devotee who savors blessed Rāma. Rāma manifests for such devotees in infinitely many millions of forms.

त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं रामवीर्ये प्रतिष्ठितम्। विजानन्ति नराः सर्वे नास्य रूपं च नाम च॥९७॥
This entire threefold world rests upon Rāma’s power, yet people do not fully know either his form or his name.
Passage 98
य एतस्मिन् महाप्रीतिं कलयिष्यन्ति मानवाः। त एव धन्या राजेन्द्र नान्ये स्वजनदूषकाः॥९८॥
Those people who cultivate great love for this alone are blessed, king of kings—not others who disparage their own people. --- Thus ends the thirteenth chapter, “Vasiṣṭha’s Teaching of the Thousand Names,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa in the Śrīmad Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Textual notes The source calls this a thousand-name hymn although its compact litany is transmitted in verses 11–87 rather than as one thousand separately numbered entries. Verse 45 adopts the edition’s parenthetical corrections प्रीतः प्रीतमनाः. At verse 53 the margin offers सत्त्व beside the printed उत्साहन. Verse 82 prints वृष्णिगर्भ, while the edition’s note offers the familiar पृश्निगर्भ; the translation follows the printed line. The source numbers both verses 95 and 96 as 95; the second has been numbered 96 here so that the sequence and declared total of 98 remain transparent.
