Passage 1
अथाहनन् दुन्दुभिवादिनो भुवि प्रमोदिताः संसदि देवदुन्दुभीन्। जगुश्च विद्याधरकिन्नरीगणाः प्रबन्धजन्मोत्सवगायनोद्धुराः॥१॥
Then the delighted drummers on earth sounded celestial kettledrums in the assembly. Hosts of vidyādharas and kinnara women sang elaborate compositions, absorbed in celebrating the birth festival.
Passage 2
सुराश्च तूर्यत्रिकनादमोदिताः सुरद्रुमाणां कुसुमैरवाकिरन्। कृताङ्गभूषा ननृतुश्च सम्भ्रमात् सुराङ्गनाभिर्गगनाङ्गणस्थिताः॥२॥
Delighted by the sound of the threefold instruments, the gods scattered flowers from heavenly trees. In the courtyard of the sky, richly adorned celestial women danced in rapt excitement.
Passage 3
दिशां प्रसादः सहसा तदाभवद् ययुः सुखस्पर्शकराः समीरणाः। सुरोचिषा रोचित उद्गतो रवि- र्नभस्तलं दर्पणनिर्मलं बभौ॥३॥
The quarters suddenly grew clear and breezes moved with a pleasant touch. The risen sun shone with divine brilliance, and the sky gleamed spotless as a mirror.
Passage 4
प्रदर्शयामास तथैव कालो निजान् गुणान् सन्ततमाधिदैविकान्। विज्ञाय सर्वेश्वरमत्र जातं रमा निजांशैरवतारमाचरत्॥४॥
Time itself revealed its own ever-divine qualities. Knowing that the Lord of all had been born here, Ramā descended through her own portions.
Passage 5
ततोऽधिकूलौ मधुरौ सरय्वा रत्नोप्तहेमप्रभवौ बभूवतुः। सरिच्च चान्द्री विमला विरेजे समुल्लसत्काञ्चनबालुकाढ्या॥५॥
The two lovely banks of the Sarayū then shone with jewels and golden radiance. The pure, moonlike river gleamed, rich with sparkling golden sands.
Passage 6
सर्वे द्रुमास्तत्र सुरद्रुमोपमाः सर्वे निधीनां निवहा इहासुः। सर्वे च ते दिव्यसमृद्धयोगा ये प्रादुरासुः कमलानिकेतने॥६॥
Every tree there became like a heavenly wish-fulfilling tree, and every host of treasures was present. All conjunctions of divine prosperity manifested in Kamalā’s dwelling.
Passage 7
राजा दशरथः स्नात्वा कृत्तश्मश्रुरलङ्कृतः। जातकर्म कुमाराणां चकार विधिवद्द्विजैः॥७॥
King Daśaratha bathed, trimmed his beard, and adorned himself. With the twice-born he performed the princes’ birth rites according to rule.
Passage 8
जातकर्मोत्सवे धेनूः कोटिशः समलङ्कृताः। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ राजा युक्तः परमया मुदा॥८॥
At the birth-rite festival, the king, filled with supreme joy, gave millions of richly adorned cows to brāhmaṇas.
Passage 9
नृत्यतां गायकानां च वाद्यतां पुरयोषिताम्। मनोरथाधिकं प्रादात्पटभूषणधोरणम्॥९॥
To the dancers, singers, musicians, and women of the city he gave heaps of cloth and ornaments beyond anything they had wished for.
Passage 10
वन्धुभ्यो ज्ञातिजेभ्यश्च महाराजेभ्य एव च। सम्माननं चकारोच्चैर्वासोऽलङ्कारसम्पदा॥१०॥
He bestowed the highest honours upon friends, kinsmen, their descendants, and great kings through an abundance of garments and ornaments.
Passage 11
तत्राशिषः प्रयुञ्जानाः प्रेमपूर्णा द्विजातयः। कुमाराणां सुभव्याय जन्मस्वस्त्ययनं जगुः॥११॥
The twice-born, filled with love and bestowing blessings, sang the auspicious birth hymn for the princes’ excellent future.
Passage 12
अथास्थाने स्थितं भूपं सदूर्वादलपाणयः। पौरा जनाः समाजग्मुरन्योन्यकृतमङ्गलाः॥१२॥
Then the citizens came before the king seated in the assembly, holding blades of dūrvā grass and exchanging auspicious greetings with one another.
Passage 13
मण्डिता मण्डमानाश्च जातकौतुकवृद्धयः। सुहृदः साधवश्चैव भक्ता देवर्षयस्तथा॥१३॥
Adorned and radiant, their wonder at the birth ever increasing, friends, saints, devotees, and divine sages assembled there.
Passage 14
कोटिब्रह्माण्डनाथाश्च देवा ब्रह्मादयोऽखिलाः। कोटयश्च महेन्द्राणां यमानां कोटयस्तथा॥१४॥
The lords of millions of cosmic eggs came—all the gods beginning with Brahmā, millions of Indras, and likewise millions of Yamas.
Passage 15
कोटयो वरुणानां च कुबेराणां च कोटयः। रुद्राणां कोटयश्चैव तस्मिन् जन्ममहोत्सवे॥१५॥
At that great birth festival there were millions of Varuṇas, millions of Kuberas, and millions of Rudras.
Passage 16
अनृत्यन्त प्रमोदेन सिद्धगन्धर्वलोकवत्। अन्ये खदिग्भूमिचराः प्रमोदरसरञ्जिताः॥१६॥
They danced in delight as in the realm of siddhas and gandharvas. Other beings of sky, quarters, and earth were coloured by the rasa of joy.
Passage 17
ग्रहाश्च सर्वे शुभवेषधारिणः स्वरूपतः स्वस्वगृहेषु तस्थिरे। ब्रह्माण्डकोटिष्वपि याश्च सम्पद- स्ता मूर्तिमत्यः सहसाऽऽविरासुः॥१७॥
All the planets assumed auspicious forms and stood naturally in their own houses. Every prosperity found throughout millions of cosmic eggs suddenly appeared in embodied form.
Passage 18
राजानश्च महामोदा नानोपायनपाणयः। समाजग्मुः शुभं वक्तुं तस्मिन्रामजनोत्सवे॥१८॥
Kings filled with immense joy came to Rāma’s birth celebration, bearing many gifts in their hands and speaking auspicious words.
Passage 19
दूर्वादलसनाथेभ्यस्तेभ्यो राजा भृशं ददौ। दिव्यभूषणवासांसि वस्तूनि बहुलानि च॥१९॥
To those who came adorned with blades of dūrvā, the king gave generously: divine ornaments, garments, and many other goods.
Passage 20
तोषेण पूर्णचित्तास्ते स्पृहयन्ति परस्परम्। नरेन्द्रस्य कुमाराणां भूय आभ्युदयं शुभम्॥२०॥
Their hearts full of satisfaction, they wished together for the king’s princes to enjoy still greater and more auspicious prosperity. The people said
Passage 21
अहो दशरथो राजा भाग्यवान् मङ्गलालयः। यस्योत्तरं वयः सम्यक्सुतजन्मोत्सवैर्युतम्॥२१॥
Ah, King Daśaratha is fortunate, an abode of blessing! His later years have been perfectly joined with the festivals of his sons’ births.
Passage 22
अहो अस्य कुमाराणां दीर्घमायुर्भवत्विति। अस्मदीयैर्महाभाग्यैरेते जीयासुरीश्वराः॥२२॥
Ah, may these princes have long lives! Through our own great good fortune, may these noble lords live and prosper.
Passage 23
अहो विधे धन्यतमोऽसि यत्स्वयं मनोरथं पूरितवान् नृपस्य नः। जातोऽधुना भव्यकरो नृलोकः समस्तसौभाग्यकलाधिवासितः॥२३॥
Ah, Creator, you are supremely blessed, for you have personally fulfilled our king’s desire. The human world has now become a source of blessing, inhabited by every phase of good fortune.
Passage 24
ब्रह्मादयः सुराः सर्वे वसिष्ठाद्याः सुरर्षयः। प्रायुञ्जन्नाशिषो याभिर्वृद्धिमन्तः कुमारकाः॥२४॥
All the gods beginning with Brahmā and the divine sages beginning with Vasiṣṭha bestowed blessings through which the little princes would flourish.
Passage 25
कुमाराः विधिसुस्नाता धात्रीभिः समलङ्कृताः। विरेजुः सहसोद्भूता मणयो वारिधेर्यथा॥२५॥
Ritually bathed and adorned by their nurses, the princes shone like jewels suddenly risen from the ocean.
Passage 26
ते मातृभिः कृतसुमङ्गलसूतिकायां नीराजितास्तपनबिम्बमहौजसोऽपि। नेत्रान्तलग्नकलकज्जलविन्दुजात- दृष्टिप्रदोषविषयाः प्रणयं पुपोषुः॥२६॥
In the auspicious birth chamber their mothers waved lights before them, although their splendour rivalled the sun. Tiny black dots of collyrium were placed at the corners of their eyes to ward off the evil eye, and the princes nourished everyone’s affection.
Passage 27
दिने दिनेऽङ्गलावण्यवृद्ध्या रोचन्ति बालकाः। अजातदर्शदशना जननीनेत्रसौख्यदाः॥२७॥
Day by day the infants grew more radiant as the beauty of their limbs increased. Their teeth had not yet appeared, and they brought delight to their mothers’ eyes.
Passage 28
आशीभिः पौरलोकानां जनानां च मनोरथैः। वर्द्धमानाः प्रतिदिनं व्यूहात्मानो व्यरोचयन्॥२८॥
Growing each day amid the citizens’ blessings and the people’s loving wishes, the embodiments of the divine vyūhas shone brightly.
Passage 29
तेषां मध्ये महारूपलावण्यवपुषा युतः। चिदानन्दमयो रामो व्यरोचत विशेषतः॥२९॥
Among them, Rāma—made of consciousness and bliss and endowed with a body of supreme form and beauty—shone especially bright.
Passage 30
द्वितीयश्च सुमित्रायाः सूनुः कञ्जदलेक्षणः। व्यराजत विशेषेण रामवत्परमद्युतिः॥३०॥
The second, Sumitrā’s lotus-petal-eyed son, also shone with special splendour, supremely radiant like Rāma.
Passage 31
अन्यौ भरतशत्रुघ्नौ प्रभामण्डलमण्डितौ। विरेजतुः सुवयसौ सम्पन्नौ परया श्रिया॥३१॥
The other two, Bharata and Śatrughna, were adorned with halos of radiance. Beautiful young boys, they shone endowed with supreme glory.
Passage 32
दशरथभवनं सदा समृद्धं सुविततमूर्जितमिन्दिरानिवासम्। रामजनुषि सुमङ्गले च जाते व्यरुचदतीव मनोज्ञयैव लक्ष्म्या॥३२॥
Daśaratha’s palace, always prosperous, expansive, powerful, and a dwelling of Indirā, became still more radiant with enchanting splendour when the blessed birth of Rāma took place.
Passage 33
तथैवाविर्बभूवुस्ते बाला वै लक्ष्मणादयः। बभौ राजा समासाद्य निखिलांश्च मनोरथान्॥३३॥
In the same manner the other infants, Lakṣmaṇa and the rest, became manifest. Having attained every desire, the king shone with joy. --- Thus ends the twelfth chapter, “The Festival of Rāma’s Birth,” in the dialogue of Brahmā and Bhuśuṇḍa in the Śrīmad Ādi Rāmāyaṇa. Textual note Chapter 12 begins on the lower part of the same scan leaf that closes chapter 11; its page anchor therefore deliberately overlaps chapter 11 at leaf 165. Verse 26’s dense syntax is translated in light of the printed ritual scene: the mothers perform nīrājana and apply protective collyrium marks against an inauspicious gaze. No unnumbered root material occurs in this chapter.
