…Śatrughna’s garden. The brothers wander through all five gardens, admiring the beauty of trees, vines, fruits, and flowers. They accept flower garlands and branches laden with fruit and dried delicacies from the gardeners and give everyone supreme joy. They then reach Sarayū’s bank, where level, lovely ground covered in fresh green grass stretches for miles. Divine trees grow everywhere, with raised platforms, garden houses, and sitting places. They play ball, practise manoeuvres and battle formations, display different equestrian gaits, shoot at targets and moon-shaped marks, and enjoy many other games. Dismounting, they wash hands, feet, and faces, eat dried fruit, drink, and receive aromatic mouth-refreshment. On Bharata’s order, a company of royal elephants arrives—Śatruñjaya and the others—adorned with divine gold and gem ornaments, brocaded hangings, and jeweled golden howdahs. Raghubīra and Lakṣmaṇa mount Śatruñjaya. Hanumān sits behind in the attendant’s place holding a white parasol; Lakṣmaṇa waves a fly-whisk behind the Lord, while the mahout carries a second in front. Bharata and Śatrughna mount the elephant Ripuñjaya, and the companions ride the other elephants. The Lord’s procession enters Ayodhyā’s royal road. Beholding his incomparably enchanting form, all Ayodhyā’s people offer ārati and gifts, shower parched grain, sacred rice-thread, and flowers, and call out blessings, bows, salutations, and victory. Raghunandana and his brothers bow to the brahmins, ask after their welfare, honour everyone appropriately, and reach the palace gate. There they descend from the elephants, mount palanquins and covered conveyances, dismiss the larger company, and with the principal friends enter senior mother Queen Kausalyā’s palace. Hearing that the sons have come, the mothers joyfully arrange the articles of welcome and approach with trays of auspicious substances…
