You Do Not Define Yourself As Limited Self
Drop all frames of reference - even compassionate or glorious ones - because no separate self exists to be bound; the Truth is already here, just stop practicing the non-Truth.
First time I was here, there was such Silence and peace, and now…rubbish is coming. And I just want to clear something. Whether I am in a bit of an illusion about a state, whether it’s…. Mind is hammering, it’s really hammering; it’s like a psychopath attacking a victim, like both sides. And, it’s seen that it’s not me. And then there’s a pulling back and it’s like a perceiving….
So, let’s pause for a moment.…
Perceiving of it.…
You don’t want to pause? [Laughs] Okay.
Within perceiving of it is a compassion for the Helen [being in Sangha] that’s suffering, and also then the compassion is not just for the Helen that’s suffering, it’s for all. And it’s a perceiving, but I am confused — this perceiving has a quality of compassion. So, that must be a state, or is it? This is my confusion.
So, I wanted to say, all these frames of references - drop them right now, for a moment. You can take them back if you like. Drop all these references of mind - psychopath, victim, compassion, state, non-state, all this.
Okay.
Now, fresh?
[Laughs] Even sitting?
Yeah, even that is a frame of reference.
That’s a reference.
I know you may be communicating, that is fine. But don’t take any label seriously now.
The mind wants to classify. [Laughs]
Let it want whatever it wants, you don’t bother with it. Like Guruji [Sri Mooji] says, many may want to hug you but you don’t hug back. So, let the mind come and offer you various things, it’s okay. [Silence] The freedom problem is just like this. It’s just a made-up thing. There is nobody who is ever bound. Because there is nobody that exists in that way, that can be bound, anyway. So, how to solve the non-existent problem? And, why I said to drop the frames of reference is because every frame of reference that the mind is offering you, ends up defining yourself in some way — even if it is in very glorious terms, it is still defining, it is too limiting for your Reality. And then, once these boundaries are accepted, then of course there can be lots of problems like: Is this also a part of… like, is compassion also a part of pure perceiving or is it neutral? These kind of things. You’re solving non-existent problems, actually. [Laughs] Because what would that answer be about? For whom? [Smiles] This is very good interaction, because when we say drop all these references [Makes a gesture of dropping and relief.] [Laughter] That’s good. That’s why Bhagwan [Sri Ramana Maharshi] said, when a questioner asked, ‘What do I have to practice to get to the Truth?’, Bhagwan said, ‘You don’t have to practice the Truth; just stop practicing the non-Truth.’ [Laughs] It’s a beautiful answer. Don’t have to practice the Truth; the Truth is like the space, he said. You don’t have to bring it; it already is. Just stop practicing that which is not the Self. Because the false needs practice; it is the false that needs to reinforce itself over and over again. That’s why the mind is constantly active, selling you the story of you because it knows that the moment it’s not [makes a gesture of dropping]. So, whether we say, drop all the opposites, or we say drop these frames of references, it’s all so that you don’t define yourself as a limited self. Because once you define yourself as the limited self, then that’s the fertile ground for suffering and trying to solve non-existent problems.
