You Can Only Suffer If You Have an Idea of What Must

Pain comes not from events themselves but from the mind's insistence that reality conform to its ideas of what should happen.

Ananta

So, here Freedom is that Freedom for everything to appear. So if some panic has to appear here (what we have called panic) what will usually happen here (I mean you can’t really say it, till it happens fresh but from the experience of last few years) I can say that but even if some emotion is coming it is not usually labelled as fear or panic or the presumption to say that ‘this is what this is’ and that is why with everything coming I don’t feel like ‘I have ever experienced the same thing twice.’ So what to call fear? I see that there is a very broad range of sensations which traditionally I would have labelled as fear or panic or good and not good. So but these distinctions have mostly dropped. So if some sensation is coming they are not so much here saying that ‘This is good, this should stay or this bad this should not come.’ [Reading from chat] So how are you living these moments or minutes? In a simpler way to put all this is to, like Krishnamurthy said no ‘I just don’t mind. I don’t mind.’ So that is what you are saying ‘not identifying with them.’ Like even to say, like let’s look at the subtlety of it right, so when you say ‘strong emotion comes’ I don’t see anything as strong or weak usually. Because strong and weak makes me relative limited in some context. I have to be definable for something to be too much for me or too less for me. So usually when these things come I can’t tell you whether they are strong or they are weak. But yes, everything is allowed to come and because there is not so much of labelling happening of everything that is coming and going, I couldn’t tell you honestly if you were to ask me in the last one month or last five years or something like this ‘How many times you have experienced something or not?’ And yet I see there is full freedom for all these sensations, emotions to play. I can tell you for example that with most movies I see I cry, watching these movies and my kids laugh at me. So is that, what you would call a strong emotion? I wouldn’t, it just seems like a play. So, so I am sure all… everything that is available is tasted because who is it made for anyway. It is made for me to taste. Somebody the other day was saying ‘I am very frustrated right now.’ So just half-jokingly I said ‘But even that is cooked for you no. If you don’t eat it then who will eat it?’ [Smiles] So when we get out of these mental boxes of good and bad, better and worse things move in their own way. It just becomes ‘row, row, row your boat.’ Just going gently down the stream. Not so, not so concerned about what is coming or not coming. [Reading from chat] Interaction with the people in the world brings back identity with the person, any suggestions father?

Ananta

Okay, the rest of the time you be free. [Smiles] Well that much license you have got now. Okay, interaction with the people in the world… how many hours three hours, four hours you interact? Okay, be identified with those times. In sleep state nothing to worry. So like intermittent fasting like those eight hours are easy then all you have to do is then remaining four hours you don’t identify. If you want to make it even simpler? Whenever you are able to come to Satsang, you are here in Satsang, during that time don’t identify. For one moment don’t identify. Because it is these benchmarks, this is the checker- guy, who don’t recognize. Still, this doesn’t get fixed till then you are not free. It is still building a story of a ‘fake you’ without us realizing it and it is very, very tricky because it will use the words of Satsang itself.

Key Teachings

  • Suffering arises only when the mind holds onto fixed ideas about how things should be
  • When you release the idea of 'what must happen,' the basis for suffering dissolves
  • The mind creates suffering through attachment to its own projections and expectations
