The Self (I Am)

You Are Aware Of Your ‘Self’

The 'my way' belief is the main obstacle to spiritual progress - true freedom comes from recognizing the 'me' doesn't exist and surrendering to the Master's way.

I have a very embarrassing belief. There is something like very egoisHc. Yes, like the life has to start to go my way.

Ananta

Life will start to go my way once I am free [Paraphrasing]

Seeker

Yeah, it is just …whatever that mind….

Ananta

Yes. Yes. Life will start going my way. [Paraphrasing]

Ananta

No it is good to expose it. And this in spirituality also in Satsang, I have met Beings who’ve been Satsang for two-three years but this is the only idea which stops them. Like ‘Okay, but he saying it is now, but according to my way it must be like this.’ So, it is very good to expose this and this belief is very central that is why I said ‘do you have a Guru or do you want to be Frank Sinatra’ As long as we are saying ‘my way, my way, my way’ [Smiles] singing ‘my way, my way, my way’ we can’t say we have a Master actual. To have a Master and also have a ‘way’ is a huge contradicHon, in fact, it can be a life full of suffering. And in a way we are ge^ng to the center of all of this by asking, what is, if the Master is saying that ‘the Truth just is and you are completely aware of it, you are aware of yourself as Awareness itself, then what is lee? What is the standard which is missing now? What is the idea that we have which keeps us in this sort of limited perspecHve? And we exposed a few [ideas]… one is that ‘the mind should confirm’, one is that ‘but then things should start happening my way’ or ‘the world will start funcHoning my way’. And the…when before spirituality happened here I used have this idea that ‘God is for losers, those who do not have belief in themselves have made up this idea of God’. But I did not know what this ‘themselves’ was. So, at the center of this ‘my way’ who is the ‘me’? There is nobody like that. [Smile] And all of us have heard this many Hmes. And this is the trick of the ‘mind’ which will convince you that there is no ‘me’ but this non-existent ‘me’ is the doer. There is no ‘me’ but things should happen according to my idea. [Smile]

Key Teachings

  • The belief that 'life should go my way' is the central obstacle in spirituality - having a Master while insisting on 'my way' creates suffering
  • There is no 'me' - the self we think we are doesn't actually exist, yet the mind tricks us into believing this non-existent 'me' is the doer
  • True surrender requires releasing the demand that things happen according to our preferences and allowing the Master's way
