True freedom comes from dropping false ideas about yourself while gaining intuitive insight into what you are - both happen simultaneously in a self-reinforcing virtuous circle.

When the Masters have said that ‘Come to this discovery about your Self, find your Self, Know thy Self’. So, what is the way to know your Self? How to know your Self? And each of them in one way or the other have shown us the way. And yet because our conditioning so strongly can seem like, it is some sort of experience that I have to have or some sort of concept that I must believe in now, be convinced about, but nothing in the world seems to have that permanency… so we keep feeling that we are almost there. Like we have it then we lose it, then we have it again then we lose it, and then we start doubting ourselves whether we ever had it, you see, what is going on, it can all seem a bit confusing! And what is the trouble? If there is an attempt here, it is to try and make it as straightforward and simple as possible, this discovery. So this Freedom that we are looking for, what does it actually mean? It means you have a true insight, a true intuitive insight about what you are and correspondingly you drop the false idea about what you are. Both are the same but for the moment it can seem like two. Because if you drop the false idea about who you are, the intuitive insight is apparent. If you have an intuitive insight about what you are, then the dropping of the false conditioning seems simple. So both are the same but in worldly terms it may seem like two things. While we are speaking in worldly terms, we can call this a ‘virtuous circle’. As more and more you are dropping that which is false about you, the Truth about you is becoming apparent. And more and more the Truth about you is becoming apparent, that which is false about you seems to be dropping. So this is the beautiful (provisionally we can call it the) path to Freedom that is on offer in Satsang. And it is quite straightforward, quite straightforward. In fact the recognition, the inquiry is super simple, simpler than simple but like I’ve said that the conditions that are required, the environment that needs to be created for the inquiry that seems to be a bit difficult, although it is not, but it can seem to be a bit difficult.

Key Teachings

  • Dropping the false idea about who you are and gaining intuitive insight into what you are are the same process - they are not two separate things
  • The path to Freedom is a virtuous circle: as you drop false conditioning, Truth becomes apparent; as Truth becomes apparent, false conditioning drops away
  • The inquiry is super simple - simpler than simple - but requires the right conditions and environment to arise
