To Be Open and Empty Is the Most Natural
Being open and empty is our most natural state - simply allow everything to come and go without grasping, and when you notice closure, just open again without judgment.
When you follow, ‘Be open and empty’, the good news is that [snaps his finger] every moment you start open and empty. Now whatever is coming just let it come and go. That’s it. no grasping, no grabbing, full openness. It’s the most natural. If you find yourself making an effort, something like that, [makes a posture of constriction or being closed] just become open completely. When I was talking about (referring to the gesture) I was talking about your inner position, when you start yourself inwardly constricted, outwardly activity can continue of course.
So, when you say ‘outwardly’ it also includes mind?
Yeah, the mind will have thoughts, you let them come and you let them go.
Let’s say you are reading something very complicated…
You’re reading the words and suppose it’s very complicated (you say) so try out an experiment for me, try reading it without what you call ‘exertion’ and with ‘exertion’ and see when you understand better. Because this can be an idea, (looks as if very focused into the book) then I’m getting more. Maybe if you’re just like (makes a gesture of relaxed reading) … Just… I want to say just be natural, as natural as possible but I know the minute I say ‘be natural’, naturalness has gone. [Chuckling]. It’s not a special state or something, just open. And many times during the day you will get closed and when you do get closed and you see ‘Aah I got closed’ don’t pick up new things to close yourself like guilt, ‘Oh I should not have done that’. None of that, just become open again. So basically, to put another simple way, (Yesterday, Garima and I were also taking about this) just, these thoughts are visitors, let them come and let them go don’t serve them tea, that is to be open and empty. In your perception there is never trouble any way. I use the term ‘pure perception’ which means unlabeled perceiving, never causes trouble.
Key Teachings

- When you notice you've become closed, simply open again without guilt or self-judgment - no new things to close yourself
- Thoughts are visitors - let them come and go without serving them tea (engaging with them); pure perception without labels never causes trouble
