This Small ‘I’ has No Tangible Existence

The small 'I' has no actual existence - we are already free from it, and the wobbliness we feel is simply the discovery of our deeper, greater Self.

Father, [Ananta] I wanted to report that very often I observe the person (the small ‘I’) the person has gotten weaker but still exists, there is still some interest in the world. I submit this small ‘I’ to you.

Ananta

Thank you. But when you say that I see it [referring to the small ‘I’], you don’t see it, you don’t actually see it. You just see the circumstantial evidence, which means that if this body is working in a certain way you can make an inference that that is the ego, the ego talking or the ego acting. But actually it is never to be found. This small ‘I’ has no tangible existence even phenomenally. So you’re already rid of it, if you take on the project that I want to be rid of the small ‘I’ it is just the thief dressed up as the policeman trying to catch the thief. You are Free from it right now. But even now if you take on the project, “No, no but I noticed it yesterday, and I must become forever free from it!” it is still the same guy just dressed up in clothes pretending to help you. So one tip I have for you and all of you is that any time you notice yourself making a linear story about yourself, any linear story about yourself, know that it is just the mind. You’re not an object in time. You have no yesterday, today and tomorrow. So sometimes in our most humble sounding story the trickster can peep through. Are you an object in time right now? Where are you, where are you? [Silence] Where are you looking at the perceptions we call the body from? [Silence] Are you in this universe? Only objects are here. [Silence] Where are you looking at this world from? Do you have time there? Do you have a story there? There is nothing in Spirituality, there is nothing in Satsang; for who you think you are. [Silence] That is my greatest gift for you. I don’t want to give you what you want because I don’t have the patience to wait for you to want what I want to give you. Maybe I’m not so optimistic that if I keep giving you what you want one day you will want what I want to give you. [Pause] As you are coming to this some of you will experience a sense of fear, a sense of wobbliness, which the mind will present to you as bad news or something but it’s just fine. You have to look at it as intermittent fasting. When you start intermittent fasting what happens? A couple of days is a bit tough because the body is so used to getting instant gratification from the stomach, always expecting food to be there so for the first couple of days when it doesn’t find it there, it can have a headache, all of these things. But then soon what happens, it discovers there are reserves stored up of energy, it’s like the generator was there but it was forgotten because there was constant electric supply, then it starts to feel comfortable because it knows that even if there is no food it can go to the reserves. In the same way as you’re learning to keep your head empty of conclusions, empty of notions, something can wobble but that’s just because you’re discovering your intuitive reserves, intuitive deeper insights. And we can trust that. It will feel like, ‘I don’t know how to run my life anymore, what am I supposed to do?’ It is just fine. You’re getting in touch with a deeper, greater Grace. [Silence] So this wobbliness is like a development of trust. You develop trust away from your mental projections into Supreme Intelligence which is your own Being.

Key Teachings

  • The small 'I'/ego has no tangible existence - it cannot actually be found, only its circumstantial evidence is observable
  • The attempt to eliminate the ego is itself the ego operating (thief dressed as policeman) - we are already free right now
  • The fear and wobbliness that arise on the spiritual path are like 'intermittent fasting' - they indicate we are discovering our deeper intuitive reserves and developing trust in our own Being
