There Are No Two

The separation between self and other is illusory; in truth there is only one consciousness appearing as diverse forms.

Now, there’s a the deeper question than that, which is that ‘In this seeming arising of Being- ness and in that Awareness of this Being-ness are there now two? Can we say, really say, Absolute and God is two different entities or something like that? No, it is not like that. It is just like, ‘I’ empty of even the sense of presence, even the sense of Being and then the sense of Being waking up like ‘I am’. It is not the arising of the another. It is not that ‘I’ and now you are. It is still the ‘I am’. So, just like ‘I’ was asleep, now ‘I’ am awake. Because there is wakefulness does that mean that there are two? No, it doesn’t. It only means that there is a qualitative tasting of the manifest which seems to arise. Now, all of Vedanta is about telling us that, there are no two. But within Vedanta, there are many, many, many schools. Maybe most westerns don’t realize this when we speak, even of Advaita-Vedanta, there are many, many schools of Advaita - Vedanta. There is Shudh Advaita -Vedanta, there is Keval Advaita-Vedanta, there is Bedha, there is Abedha, there is Bedha-Abedha, there are many, many schools like that. Then within Vedanta, there is also Dvaita (Duality). So it is not just non-duality, duality is also contained with Vedanta. So, based on how you look at this. Like most natural here is to look at it this way and say that ‘There is just the Truth, the Absolute, the Self, Brahman.’ Brahman has this unique ability to take itself to be something that is limited. When it takes itself to be something which is limited, that is called ‘ignorance’. When it is not taking itself to be that limited identity then all is Brahman itself. Even when it taking itself to be something limited it is ignorance but it does not actually change anything. And this is why the schools can differ. Because one school can say that ‘Actually some individualization happened in Consciousness and then that individualised Being then has to merge with the greater Being or something like that.’ But that is not my experience. In my experience, what I saw is that and what I see right now is that there is no such, there is no such and there was no such distinction which actually, really came into play. It was just a misunderstanding, a misconception. And who played this game of misconception? It is my Self. My own Self playing in its manifest form as Consciousness took itself to be something that it is not, took itself to be something that is limited. Then it saw that it is not that and stopped talking itself to be that. That is the end of ignorance.

Key Teachings

  • Duality is the root of suffering; recognizing non-duality brings freedom from conflict
  • What we call "two" (subject and object, knower and known) is ultimately one indivisible reality
