The Truth Is Unlimited
Fear of death naturally arises during spiritual inquiry, but being in Satsang reminds us the mind's fears are limited while Truth is unlimited.
[Reading from chat] In this process, at times I feel utterly alone, and a sense of fear of death or dying creeps up. I struggle a bit there, though noticing that this also arises in that spacious field of awareness. Bless me, dear Anantaji. Pardon me if the description looks out of place. No, it is very natural for this. Whether you call it the fear of the unknown, or you call it the fear of death, it is the same fear that everyone who goes through this, grapples with. Sometimes, you can use big names such as forty days and nights, sometimes you can just say it is the most frustrating, most fearful, experience of our lives. These things are very much part of this play. Now, it can happen — seem to happen — in varying degrees for all of us, but it is not something that is unnatural. You’ll feel lonely, you’ll feel like nobody understands you; there will be times in the inquiry when you feel like death is coming. So, it is very good then to be able to join Satsang because to meet someone who has overcome this fear, who has transcended all of this, can be very encouraging. When the mind gets hold of this sense of the fear of the unknown, and the fear of dissolution, death, it is good if someone is there with you saying it’s okay, you will be okay. [Silence] Many of us have prayed for the Absolute. We have prayed for complete dissolution of the false. But when it starts to happen, it can feel uncomfortable, it can feel scary like what is happening, this is not what I bargained for, I was promised bliss, in fact. [Smiles] When these things come, they can feel so oppressive and they can feel like, ‘But I am much worse now than I was before I started this journey. Why did I even get into this mess?’ You can feel all these things; I’m sure I can relate to this. But they do not last. These things are just…. ammunition of the mind is not unlimited. It is the Truth that is unlimited. And it is good that you are in Satsang because you have a reminder in front of you saying: Yes, all these things happen. The fear of death can come, but you will transcend it. [Silence] The mind can also give you a lot of unfounded fear from the past. Like one time I was in Thiru [Thiruvanamalai] and this girl came and sat in front of Guruji [Sri Mooji] and said, ‘I have this strong feeling that my head is going to explode.’ [Smiles] So, he said, ‘Oh! I have never seen a head exploding.’ [Smiles] Not that he wanted her head to explode but to not be fearful of the ideas this mind gives you. Just like: Whatever is coming, okay, bring it on. What is there? Let’s see what can you do? It is only one who has transcended that can point in this way truly from the heart because they have seen that the true nature of this reality cannot be hurt by anything. That is why — besides, of course, all the pointers and the Presence that is available in Satsang — it is good also to hear from someone who has been though all of this and can tell you that none of this will last but your truth will.
