The Self (I Am)

The Idea of Individualization of Consciousness –Jivatma

The mind's greatest deception is convincing us we are a separate personal being, but when investigated, no such individual exists—only the one undifferentiated Being.

Ananta

What is the mind’s greatest trick? The greatest con of the mind is to convince this Being itself, that this Being is personal. Who is here? ‘Oh, person is here’. Where? Where? It just isn’t - when you really check. So it is just a belief system. The notion ‘I am something’ is to identify as something and that identification is what is called ego, or the idea of individualization of Consciousness, Jivatma (individual consciousness) ‘I am something’. Now, this never happens in Reality. Just like in the rope and snake example, there is no snake ever in reality. When you shine the light of your looking, truly, you realise that there never was a snake. In the same way, when you really look, you’ll never find this separate individual. It is just a misunderstanding, a misconception, a mistaken belief. That which is untrue, being taken to be true. So the notion that ‘I am something’ or ‘I am limited’, is the notion of the ego, or separation, it is just never true. So when you are looking, if you’re buying into any mind answer, which is saying, ‘But… I am the person’. Nobody has ever introduced this person to me. Nobody has ever introduced… in fact, we’ve had a cash prize, we’ve said many years ago that we’ll give a thousand dollars to anyone who can show me this person. But it’s been, like, almost six years now but nobody has claimed it. Why? Because when we check, it is just not there! Who has the money in the bank account? Who has a problem with the boss at work? Not the body. The body has no problem with the boss at work, the body has no money in the bank. So who is that one that owns the body, owns the money, owns the relationship, owns the… all these constructs, mental constructs of ownership. Who is that one? ‘My’ body is not so well today, ‘my’ financial situation is not so great today - you would say, like these kinds of things. ‘My’ relationship is in a mess, ‘my’ spiritual search is pointless, these kind of things we can say. Who is this one? Who is this constant ‘me’? Who is the one looking for Freedom? What does the body have to do with Freedom? So if already you are in Satsang, you don’t believe that you are the body, that much is clear. Because I would suggest if you really believe that you are the body why you come to Satsang? Go to ice-cream shop, at least some nice taste will come.
