Awareness & Attention

The Guidance Received Independent of Mental Interpretation Is Your

Freedom comes from questioning the belief in what thoughts present, rather than trying to control attention - through inquiry 'who is not worthy?' or surrender to the Master.

So the acceptance of pain, because it has the tail of saying okay I am accepting it so that it dies, then does not become a full acceptance, you see? So that's something to notice as well. So if we can bring ourselves to be in the moment with it (clicks fingers) without any outcomes of what that turns out to be.. You see.. Then that is ofcourse.. That is like master Bankai said “All problems are perfectly resolved in the Unborn.” That is the one pill I have for all problems. Which by the way, does not mean that we cannot get external treatment. I am just talking about our inner attitude of openness.

Yeah

Ananta

It does not mean that, oh there is pain and just accept it.. Accept it(shows how forceful acceptance looks by closing his eyes and clenching fists).. You see.. That's not what I am saying. From your inner openness you can tell your children or you can tell a doctor that this is what is happening.. You see.. That might emerge just very organically and some treatment can be taken and this is very important for everyone. So when we talk about acceptance we are not talking about a particular position the body takes, it is inwardly not taking a position. I am not saying, “oh you have a pain in your shoulder, just accept it, sit in Padmasana all day.” You see.. I am not saying any of that.. I am just saying inwardly be as open and empty as possible and that also includes that if your attention is fixated on something, let it be fixated on something. What I am sharing has to do with identification and belief rather than where attention goes.

Seeker

Hmmm (smiles). Thank you.

Ananta

Very good question. I enjoyed it very much.

Key Teachings

  • Both attention AND belief are needed to take yourself as the limited 'me' - questioning belief is essential for liberation, not just controlling attention
  • It is easier to not take yourself to be what thoughts present rather than trying to control or stop thoughts - identification requires attention to a thought first
  • For recurring thoughts that quickly identify (like 'I'm not good enough'), use self-inquiry ('Who is not worthy?') or surrender to the Master - both make the thought light until it becomes laughable
