Stop determining the nature of anything - all conceptual knowledge rests on the substratum of Truth (your existence), so chop off the lies until only Truth remains.

Ananta

So, what is the quickest way to be open and empty? This [snaps fingers] of course. But, slower than this: Don`t determine the nature of anything. [Silence] You see, and someHmes what happens is, that these very simple words like 'big' and 'small', 'strong' and 'weak', these very basic, primiHve words, they can actually seem to play a part in the role of this sort of limiHng expression, limiHng consciousness. And, because they are so primiHve, we leave them un-invesHgated or un-inquired. You see? So, even [in] our simple determinaHons that something is 'very big' or 'strong' or it`s 'not so strong', it`s 'quite open' (you see) or it`s 'closed' or 'weak', [that] we talked about with all the quesHoners today, we are looking in various ways in which we are able to determine what is, but none of those are truly determined. Just un-inquired – un-inquired, because these seem to be quite straight-forward. Like “Father, there is a big resistance today” or “There is so much openness.” You see ? Can we really determine this, either of these? We are ge^ng to very subtle layers of how we limit ourselves even in this, like spiritual, vocabulary. [Silence] So, you have only one job lee. It is to quit the job of determining the nature of anything. [Silence] I seem to be very pleased with myself for saying that [Laugher in the room] and I am not ge^ng that [points to the sangha in the room] reacHon. [Laughing]

Seeker

No, no, all good! [Laughing]

Ananta

I`m just kidding... [Laughing] [ImitaHng Sangha] It’s like: If you say “Yes”, he is going to say “Do you really know that?” [Laughing] You cannot know (you see) what anything is. You cannot know conceptually what anything is. And to know what 'what Is' is, (you see), you cannot not know It. So, although you can never know it conceptually, you can never not know it in Reality. Now only depends on what we take to be the valid representaHve. [Silence] Okay, I maybe need a translator today because something is taking over this voice today which is only speaking like this... It is because I was reading Zen stuff last night, it`s not my fault. [Chuckles]

Seeker

Father, you are saying we cannot know conceptually, but when we don`t know conceptually, we know what is to be known.

Ananta

Actually, even when we know conceptually, even that conceptual knowledge is built on the Truth only. Like the substratum, like ‘I am going here’, so ‘going’, ‘here“, all that could be false, but even to be able to make a claim of falsity, first there has to be a claim of Truth. Isn`t it? So, you and your existence are the substratum for all lies. So, what happens is, the lies have to be chopped off, Hll only the Truth remains. --------

Key Teachings

  • The quickest way to be open and empty is to not determine the nature of anything; even simple words like 'big', 'small', 'strong', 'weak' are primitive limiting expressions left uninvestigated
  • You cannot know conceptually what anything is, yet you can never not know What Is in Reality - the substratum of your existence is the basis for all truth
  • Even conceptual knowledge is built on Truth; lies must be chopped off until only Truth remains
