Provisional Truth Can Also Become an Oppression Later

Provisional truths that help us open can become suppressive if clung to; the Master's guidance is essential to know when to release even the highest pointers.

[Reading a question from the chat] Father what is the truth about yearning? Referring to a quote from Annamalai Swami ‘If the intensity to know your Self is strong enough, the intensity of your yearning will take you to the Self” Yes, this mumukshatva; this burning desire for liberation, it is very valuable along the path because what happens is that - when I say… just a little bit of openness, just little bit of openness that you don’t consider yourself this object anymore - Usually that ‘little bit of openness’, comes after that yearning, that longing for the Truth is so strong, that we willing to let go of our presumed ideas about ourselves. In that way it is valuable. Whatever leads you to become more open is valuable. Whatever makes you closed is not valuable. Whatever you use to define yourself (even if it is the highest) the definition closes you down. Whatever keeps you open, fresh, empty, that is helpful. And that which helps you become open itself, once it has done his job, if you keep hanging on to that, then that itself can be closing. Like “I want Freedom, I want Freedom, I want Freedom, I don't care, if he tells me I am a mango tree, I am fine with that, but I just want Freedom.” The longing is so much that we become open to hearing something higher than what our mind is telling you. But if I tell you that you are Free. And you say, ‘But I want Freedom.’ Then (you are) limiting yourself again. So that which has opened you, that itself ultimately, can be closing also unless it is thrown away. That’s why Bhagwan’s (Sri Ramana) metaphor of thorn is very good. Thorn is used to remove other thorn, and then thrown away. Because if you invite that thorn then another thorn has to come to remove that one. So when we are very deeply conditioned, identified full of desire and tendency then we hear something which provisionally sounds like the Truth and helps us to open out from that limited, constricted idea of life, then we open up. But whatever we may have heard at that point that opened us up, if that we continue to take forever to be the Truth (or something like that) then that itself will become too limiting and defining. That’s why it's good to check with the Master. Yesterday also while coming in the car we were having some conversation like this - something that is useful provisionally can actually become the suppression later. That is why we cannot really templatize this Freedom. Because your condition may be different from your condition, maybe different from your condition (Pointing to different Sangha members). And what may open one out, one expression of Consciousness, one aspect of Consciousness playing as that, will maybe close another one up. Even if you look at open and empty, initially you are very closed up, very closed. Then you are like empty just like space, open and empty. But, there comes a point where we become so naturally open and empty that even to try and to ‘do’ open and empty is actually just a constricted way, Like we become so used to just being so naturally that if somebody says ‘you just have to be’, all you have to do is ‘just be’, it seems like a construction actually. Like ‘I have to do that!’ So all these words, all the pointers are just provisional depending upon the quality of infection you have. That’s why Guruji (Sri Mooji) says, we don’t answer the question, we answer the questioner. And sometime the questioner is different from the one that we think it is. Because sometime we may feel like, ‘Oh, that he is just telling him, he is not telling me’ but if it is playing something [here, pointing inwards] then it is worth looking at.

Key Teachings

  • Yearning for liberation creates the openness needed to let go of limiting self-concepts, but clinging to that yearning itself becomes a new limitation
  • Provisional truths and practices that open us can become oppressive if held onto permanently - what helps at one stage must be let go of later
  • The Mastertailors guidance to each person because what opens one may close another; we cannot templatize Freedom
