Meet your Thoughts as Consciousness Itself

Meeting thoughts as Consciousness rather than as somebody prevents being held hostage by them, and the best response is simply letting go.

Seeker

Father there is incessant thinking and fear based thinking that's coming up more and more. There is a recogniHon of it but there is an inability to step out of it, and the story is becoming very important even though I see it’s the mind playing, there seems to be some aZachment to that.

Ananta

So let’s take this as live experiment. Suppose I am the mind and I am saying, “Now you have to be very careful otherwise this may happen to you! If you are not really really careful now, you beZer stay out of trouble, the worst possible is going to happen.” So all these messages are coming, so how are you in it? Suppose all these messages are coming from mind. So you say it’s very difficult to step back from it, but how are you in it?

Seeker

I am not in it. I can see them.

Ananta

Then you have already answered the quesHon. Then it's not so difficult to step back from them. As you can never step into it actually. [Silence] What would stepping back from it look like? [Silence]

Seeker

Seeing them come and go.

Ananta

Can you ever see them come and stay?

Seeker

When it feels like on a loop, repeat happening, keeps coming back.

Ananta

So to step back means there is no loop now? [Chuckles] Haan? [Silence] Would stepping back mean it cannot be on repeat now? It has to be on shuffle not on loop? It doesn’t maZer no! If the thought is saying same things 100 Hmes or 100 different thoughts are coming, it doesn’t really maZer. [Silence] What to do with the thought that says thought itself must change?

Seeker

That’s also a thought.

Ananta

So as long as we try to meet thoughts as somebody, you see, we may find it difficult to deal with them. Because for somebody, there will always be some part of the story which will be compelling. Because somebody is made up of stories, as we were saying .So something which can add value to that story or add further nurturing to that story, will always feel compelling from that mode of somebody-ness. But if you meet your thoughts as Consciousness itself, then you cannot be held hostage. God cannot be held hostage to its own creaHon. [Silence] So how to meet God.

Seeker

Try to stay open and empty

Ananta

Yes, and what effort does that need?

Seeker

No effort actually.

Ananta

God is your very being right now. This very Consciousness which is your Being-ness right now, which is already here. It has no limitaHons, nowhere to go, nothing to do, just fine. Only problem is that you cannot make a story. Like what do we lose when we lose the mind or the we lose the reliance on the mind? When we become independent of the mind, what do we really lose? Like we can no longer insert our life into some sort of linear story. What’s happening to you? Oh I can't say! And that seems like terrible news. As we have got into the noHon that the meaning we can give to this life, is the meaning we can narrate about it. You see. But it’s not like that.

Seeker

Yes Father, I wanted to expose this something that I observed recently.

Ananta

The narraHve of spiritual seeker has dropped or not? The narraHve of progress? Of remaining?

Seeker

That remains Father.

Ananta

That remains! [Chuckles] Then no work is needed. The Remaining is remaining or the idea that ‘I’ have to remain, is remaining?

Seeker

I have to remain is remaining. The ‘I’ have to remain is remaining.

Ananta

Maybe the small ‘I’ is remaining based on just that idea.... Some Fear can come...we can feel like this is my policeman without this I will become so berserk... will become so personal.. Who will help me stay as the Self? But who is the one...that we are guarding? [Silence]

Seeker

The thief dressed as policeman. Oh God! It’s all exposed at your feet Father… I just don't want to deal with it... I just want to let go! Father: The best way to deal with it is to Let go!

Key Teachings

  • Meeting thoughts as Consciousness itself rather than as "somebody" prevents being held hostage by them - God cannot be held hostage to its own creation
  • The sense of being someone who needs to step back from thoughts is itself a thought; if you can see thoughts, you are already stepped back
  • The "I have to remain" is what's remaining, not actual awareness or presence - the seeker narrative of progress is the remaining element
  • The best way to deal with fear-based thinking is simply to let go - the policeman (fear) is actually the thief dressed as policeman
