Look, Don’t Think

The Awareness that sees is already complete and cannot be helped - suffering comes only from false identification with the body-mind, and the spiritual struggle ends when we stop trying to capture Truth in our heads.

Seeker

Whenever I ask a quesHon like ‘Who is seeing?’ You will say ‘Only you are there, who else is there.’

Ananta

Yes.

Seeker

Whenever I said ‘It’s not helping me.’ You said ‘You are going to go soon.’

Ananta

Yes. [Laughs] The One that is seeing in what way can that One be helped? You have to look, don’t think. The One that is seeing or is aware of even seeing, aware of percepHon, how can that One be helped? But the One that wants or doesn’t want is that the same One?

Seeker

This is what the confusion about.

Ananta

So that is simple once you idenHfy the confusion that ‘This is what the confusion is’… you just have to look. What is there? So who is the One that is Aware?

Seeker

I am Aware.

Ananta

Yes, so this ‘I’ which is Aware look and see if it wants something. What can be given to it? How can it be helped? What can be given to this Awareness? What material benefit it can have? What change does it want? What is it touched by? [Silence] That which is joy itself, but not objecHve joy, not phenomenal joy, what joy can it get from something phenomenal? So as long as you confuse yourself to be that which you are not; and who is confusing itself? The same one playing in its manifest aspect as consciousness takes itself to be the limited three- dimensional, four-dimensional object that which we call the body-mind. And what is the symptom of that? When consciousness takes itself to be a limited object the symptom that starts to arise preZy soon is suffering. Grievances, guilt, pride, resentment, arrogance, remorse all of this is suffering. Do not take yourself to be that which you are not, do not pracHce the false - is Truth. This Truth which you can never leave actually. You see that the only trouble is to try and capture it in your head (at least that much we must be able to see by now). The Truth which is just here, the river is flowing but we are trying to boZle it up that’s the only trouble. When will I get the river in the boZle? When will I get the river in the boZle? I almost had it. I am almost there. And never complete, isn’t it? Because we can never truly decipher this Truth in our heads and that is the end of the spiritual struggle. That is the end of the spiritual struggle. You already bathing in it [Smile] but you are trying to boZle it and take it home.

Key Teachings

  • The Awareness that sees cannot be helped or given anything - it is already complete and whole. What wants help is the false identification with the body-mind.
  • Suffering (grievances, guilt, pride, resentment, arrogance, remorse) arises only when consciousness takes itself to be a limited object rather than its true nature as Awareness.
  • The spiritual struggle ends not by achieving something, but by stopping the attempt to 'bottle' Truth in the head - we are already bathing in it.
