The Self (I Am)

Leave the Ability to Interpret and Judge which is called the Intellect.

The intellect cannot access true reality; Self-knowledge is our natural nature that requires no figuring, only the recognition and letting go of the mind's interpretations.

Ananta

You are convinced that the version of reality that you are sprouHng out of your mouth is true? Or is light and conversaHonal?

Seeker

SomeHmes it feels, because I’m feeling it, it’s real. And then, the more I sit there, I see it’s not real.

Ananta

Ok, what is real, right now, right now, say something true.

Seeker

If I say my feelings are real…

Ananta

What are you feeling?

Seeker

I’m feeling nothing now, because you are looking at me and I’m not feeling it anymore, they just dissolved.

Ananta

Okay, what else is true? [Pause] And I’m really interested in asking you, what benchmark are you using to determine true? If it is a percepHon, does it make it true? That’s so non-vedanHn of you. [Laughing]

Seeker

I forgot that sentence looong ago. That comes a liZle bit later on. SomeHmes when it’s strong it feels…

Ananta

Isn’t it Vedanta 101? Nitya -Anitya Viveka, no?

Seeker

Forgot everything.

Ananta

Everything? That’s good. Now?

Seeker

Now? I don’t know, that’s the problem.

Ananta

How do you know it’s a problem? Like, I don’t know anything and someHmes we can say: “I don’t know anything” [happy] and someHmes we can say “I don’t know anything” [hand on the head, troubled] and in both those representaHons there is sHll some knowing, although we are saying “I don’t know anything”. Can you see what I mean? One is with the knowing that this is not good, and one is the knowing that, ‘Aah, this is so good!’ [Laughing] You cannot do it with this tool, you see [poinHng to the head], you cannot crack this with this tool and that’s why we are Hred. So leave that. Now? Leave the ability to interpret and judge, which is the intellect. Now?

Seeker

It’s absolutely fine.

Ananta

Is just what is. You see. And we’ve got accustomed to the oppression of this Hny instrument called intellect because we keep relying on its version for what is, but what is, is so beyond it. And that recogniHon, that seeing, that self knowledge is just organically there. Without having to take it through this instrument. So Self knowledge is your very nature, you are not confused about yourself. You only start to get confused if you start to figure it out. And we are thinking we are making progress in the figuring- ouHng because we gather more and more concepts, but it’s no progress that way. It’s just a le^ng go.

Key Teachings

  • The intellect is a limited tool for interpretation and judgment that cannot determine what is true or real - reality is beyond it
  • Self-knowledge is our natural state - we are not confused about ourselves, we only become confused when we try to figure it out through the intellect
  • Gathering more concepts is not progress; true progress is the letting go of relying on the intellect's version of reality
