It Is So Obvious that I Am Here
The obvious I-Am presence is not an individual self but pure Consciousness itself - don't chase it or conceptualize it, as any interpretation becomes a new prison keeping you from the freedom you already are.
You (Sangha member) said something; I want to pick up from there. You say that, ‘Why do these sages or masters say that there is nobody there, but it is so obvious that I am here?’ So find that out: The one that is most obvious—who is that one? You say that ‘It is so clear, it is apparent to me that I am here, then why do all these masters say, but there is nobody there, you don't even exist?’ And then you say that ‘It's so apparent I am here.’ Because this is the number one trick of the mind: To convince you that this Presence, this I-Am who is here, very obviously here, this one is somebody personal or somebody individual. Now, this I Am which is here, who is it? Whose Presence is it, whose I Am-ness is it?. The one that you take yourself to be? Any one that you take yourself to be—even if you use the highest concept of it—this Presence doesn't belong to that one. Because the conceptual one—no matter how high the concept—just doesn't exist. So, this is what we call the trick of the mind. The greatest trick, maybe, of the mind is to convince that Being, that the I Am-ness itself which is so clearly here, that It itself is something limited or something individual and It has to do something to find freedom or to find itself. I am going to use that word ‘obvious’—it so obvious that this I Am is here. And, if it is so obvious that this I Am is here, then there is no need to chase it. And, if you want to become a little more subtle about it, look a little more clearly—you don't really have to actually because even to get to the sense I Am is a discovery of Consciousness, Consciousness discovering itself—but qualitatively speaking, you can even observe the ‘I’ who is Being, the ‘I’ who is Am-ing. Who is aware of even this Consciousness, this Presence, this Being that is even empty of the quality of being and not being, something or nothing (both don't apply)? So, although you’re looking very well and your insights are very good, don't rest on any conclusion. Don't rest on any conclusion. Just let go of all interpretations of your discovery, especially the interpretations which you think mean something. Because that meaning itself is your new prison. Whatever you think anything means, it does not mean that. This insight and this discovery—is that the same as surrender? Because what is surrender? What is trust? Trust means that which you don't have to think about. If you are trusting and also trying to figure it out, then it is not trust. And the beauty is that as you’re not trying to figure it out, tell me what is not clear to you? If you are not trying to resolve it, is there a problem? To the mind, it is opposite. To the mind, first there is a problem, then we try to resolve. But in actuality, your resolution, or your idea of resolution, is the only problem. And it is especially true for freedom. The Being that is ever free is trying to become free. So, continue with this contemplation, continue with this beautiful looking, but don't rush to any conclusion. Because you don’t, at this point at least, have to share it with anyone. That’s the good part, isn’t it? Nobody is asking you. They’ve probably given up. All of our family and friends mostly have given up, saying what are you doing, what are you trying to find? So, nobody is asking you. So, don't try to answer some question in your head which truly determines that you have found something true. Because that answer will become a new prison, like I said— this new knowledge, this new false knowledge, which will seek to describe that which you are in reality. But reality is never so small that it can be described in some concept. So, continue with this contemplation, check on who you are, but keep looking with your heart. Let your heart conclude concept-lessly. There is great simplicity in truth, simpler than the simplest. Clear?
