It Is Not a Struggle to Find the Self

The Truth is so apparent it needs no pushing; both the loud mind and quiet intuition are aspects of mind, and when we run out of moves, Silence is our only refuge.

Ananta

Identification is not possible energetically, it needs at least one idea. [Silence] So maybe identification itself is that one idea. [Chuckles] So leave it. [Pause] How do you know that you are identified?

Seeker

Because there is ‘I’ that is either defined with thoughts and with energies.

Ananta

What do you mean by identifying with thought? What do you mean by identifying with thought?

Seeker

A thought comes and I really believe that is me.

Ananta

Yes, yes, so that is a belief, so that is a belief, it is using belief we identified no? We cannot identify without belief. We have to believe either it is true or untrue, either way you create a belief. And only using that belief can you identify. Now you as Consciousness, this power of belief and therefore the power to identify, rests with you as Consciousness and in Satsang it is one aspect of Consciousness seemingly reminding another aspect of Consciousness that you can let go of this belief.

Seeker

Okay, yes there is an I …

Ananta

It is a very important point because many times it can feel like ‘Oh, I am just a little person, how can I control belief? I don’t even exist, how can I not believe?’ So this pointer is not for you as a person. The power of attention and the power of belief rests with Consciousness. Now, as Consciousness, you can let go of taking yourself to be whatever you want to let go of and you can take yourself to be whatever you want as well. It’s only when you take yourself to be as something that there is this identification, this suffering. When you let go of this something-ness then you are free.

Seeker

There are many questions that come like this one who will be free when so much…that is not true no, so…

Ananta

This one that is, can you repeat?

Seeker

I don’t know [Smiles] this one that becomes free when some action is taken that is not true, what? Or…

Ananta

Yes, yes.

Seeker

So there is a question like …

Ananta

I will give you a shortcut no, instead of having to deal with every one of them you can collect all of them and throw them into the river.

Seeker

[Smiles] Okay.

Ananta

All these questions that arise and I am being a bit dramatic when I say ‘throw them into a river.’ What I really mean is just let them come and let them go.

Key Teachings

  • The mind cannot receive true answers through concepts - those seeking something greater than conceptual understanding
  • The Truth is quiet and apparent, but the mind creates a loud narrative to make Maya/Lila seem real
  • When you exhaust all mental moves, you naturally trust Silence - the mind in all its forms (loud or quiet) is still the mind
  • Feeling at home in Satsang is Life showing you you're done with the playground
